ok ok ok. I've a few push issues myself, as you know, but nothing that causes more widespread damage than a few missed notifications (all IM apps hang your heads in shame, Boxcar take a bow).

The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going
- Toby Graham
Like most other people, yesterday I wasn't aware of that I «needed» a Google Wave invitation this badly...but now I am!!! quackofdawn at gmail dot com

neternity@gmail.com and i promise to send a wave of 100,901 twitter followers to your doorstep each of whom will have averaged 1 tweet in their existence - this might not get me an invite but surely it will get some notice - must have that something special - my google wave invite special sauce ingredient is twitter juice PS Not to be construed as an offer, not valid in any of the 53 US states, do not try this at home, caution: contents are hot.

How does anyone know if someone has already been invited? You could go back and edit your comment when you receive an invitation, but since that takes days, it could be ages before you know.
- marziah
I've not even had a nomination, RK. At google dot com I'm suezanne , in the event anyone wants to make a nomination. I've asked before on friendfeed. It's kind of humiliating to beg.

They should have also integrated this feature into iTunes... Unless I'm mistaken and I can't find it...
- Michel
If smbd is still interested, you need to install 3.1.* firmware. It will appear in App Store in the iPhone, at the “Featured” tab. You switch it on — then it collect information about your future apps choices and give you some recommendations.
- Кто это тут у нас
"I have no idea how this happened. I unlocked my iphone to discover that I was short one icon at the bottom. It took me a minute to figure out that what was missing was the Safari Icon. Safari still works. I confirmed this by using the Safari Homescreen shortcut that I have for Gmail. I did a Google search and found some suggestions to reboot - that didn't work. Restore is next (what a pain!)"
- Don Bonaddio
from Bookmarklet
Instead of a restore can you just install it through the app store?
- Mark Layton
Search the other pages thoroughly. Do a Spotlight search on it. You can't install it through the App Store.
- Michel
Well, I've restored it, still no-go... I'm in the middle of a sync to bring back all my music, videos, apps etc. gonna be a while :-/ Thanks for the suggestions.
- Don Bonaddio
Restore done - Safari still didn't appear in the bottom but was now available in the third page of apps so I was now able to move it back where it belonged - strange
- Don Bonaddio
That may be true but I am sure what you had to say was outstanding, and it gives you a reason to do a some kind of follow up!

LOL, Mr. World Traveler: I'm sure you'll be invited to speak at many more TedX conferences now that the word is out that you will go and talk. They are lucky to have you and I'm certain that your words changed the lives of some of the attendees. Never discount the impact you make on someone's life...however small, but positive.

You can always mention it (as extensively as you want) on TWiT Live. Tell us how you would redo it :) ...it will eventually be heard/seen by all present at TEDx that got interested and became new viewers!

Remember Xbox is Microsoft and they don't like Apple so I've already had to jump through a few hoops to get the Xbox to connect to the Mac via Ethernet to get online. Now I'm trying to get better file streaming. Connect360 works fine but they need an update whereas Rivet has better features but doesn't support the connection via Ethernet.
- Andrew Trinh
from IM
I don't understand why they can update MediaLink but not Connect360.
- Andrew Trinh
from IM
I don't understand. I've been using Rivet for over a year. It works fine. What do you mean Connection via Ethernet?
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Rivet works fine for those that have their Xbox connected to a router using the wireless adapter or Ethernet cable. The issue is that I'm using my Macbook Pro as the wireless adapter and have it connected to my Xbox via Ethernet.
- Andrew Trinh
from IM
Ahh So you want your macbook to bridge the connection. Is internet sharing on?
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Everything is fine when I use Connect360 as I can stream and get on XBL but the Xbox isn't discovered using Rivet since they do not support the connection. If Connect360 updated their features all would be fine.
- Andrew Trinh
from iPhone
Or, if it does indeed come with Push Notifications and includes @ replies then I'm also switching back from SimplyTweet. I can't remember, does it include yFrog support?
- Michel
but not groups or, as far as I can see, Twitlonger support.
- JSLeFanu
Groups I can see a need for but until Twitter implements it I don't think I'll be using it. As for Twitlonger support, David, I find that it should only really be used when you can't shorten what you need to say otherwise 140 characters is enough for everyday use. Anything longer can go into FriendFeed or email.
- Andrew Trinh
Anything longer can go into FriendFeed when I'm communicating with a FriendFeeder like your good self but more often I'm stuck with someone whose sole social media experience is restricted to Twitter and Twitlonger is a life saver in such cases. I've been caught on the famous Iranelection hashtag since June and Twitlonger has come in damn handy. As that tag has evolved so has the depth...
- JSLeFanu
Everyone uses Twitter in their own way, personally I try to minimise Twitlonger usage as much as possible because I like to keep it to the way it was designed (140 characters). Glad to have more users on FriendFeed though.
- Andrew Trinh
I wouldn't get over glad Andrew. I think one of the things that's making some of these guys bite is the private groups/rooms feature. Clearly a bloody useful feature for pissed off Iranian students.
- JSLeFanu
Sounds like Dvorak has dropped off. Always issues with him. Blurry webcam, no headphones (echo), now no webcam. He should really know better by now.

They say that getting enough sleep is one of the keys to weight loss. If you're not sleeping enough, or getting enough water intake to be hydrated, supposedly it makes it harder to lose weight.
- shelter watch
Lol. That was the best story of its time.
- Michel
But, I have helped 6 people sign up for Twitter in the past 2 weeks who have no tech savvyness (just Facebook) . Just cause the numbers don't match the stereotypes doesn't necessarily make them untrue.
- Johnny Worthington
Scoble did a list of people who SHOULD be on the SUL... But no one I know would follow any of those people. Twitter has broken out of the Valley Bubble and is now the E Channel.
- Johnny Worthington
I don't care about any SUL. If I have absolutely no interest in you, or if you haven't said anything even remotely interesting in the past few tweets, (I don't need to know what you had for breakfast) I'm not following you.
- Devon Blugh
from twhirl
YES! Not everyone has an iPhone or a web enabled phone.
- Johnny Worthington
THe IRC has a larger than usual audience tonight Michel I think it's cause Kevin Rose is on Uggghhh!
- Bill Heslin
But will I be able to see it outside the US? Your networks have a habit of 'region protecting' stuff like this... Hulu, NBC etc...
- Johnny Worthington
Let's hope they really are just taking down existing clips in preparation for their new retro site. But I agree that they should just leave them all up and link back to their HQ versions
- Hector
This week's tease: Kevin Rose goes makeup free, Patrick Norton files his first lawsuit, and Dvorak goes retro. TWiT is next
- Leo Laporte
Leo, good luck with finding out the scumbag. Our prayers are with you and your family.
- Devon Blugh
from twhirl
Yes good luck Leo and otherwise have a great week all TWIT viewers!
- John Hoffer
agreed Devon. They'll get em ..When someone messes with the Laporte it's like messing with the creator of the internet...Or at least the Pres of the internet...
- Bill Heslin
Thanks for letting us see you work Leo... This type of experience is invaluable :)
- Johnny Worthington
so are we going to get video on FFundercats?? that would be awesome Johnny...
- Bill Heslin
Bill: Google 'Australian Bandwidth' and you'll find your answer :P
- Johnny Worthington
I was just going to say, forget that...lol...Telstra...Nah
- Bill Heslin
Can you please specify how you put two disks into macBook Pro ?
- Petr Cervenka
Petr, you can buy caddies to replace the superdrive that will hold the second disk in. Since Leo hardly ever used his, it was a good option for him
- Johnny Worthington
Petr http://www.mcetech.com/optibay... The new MCE OptiBay Hard Drive was created for users who want as much hard drive space as possible inside their MacBook Pro, MacBook, PowerBook G4... and now the Mac mini. Period. The MCE OptiBay Hard Drive replaces your machine's internal SuperDrive with a high performance SATA hard drive up to 500GB... or get just the OptiBay Hard Drive enclosure and use your own 2.5" SATA hard drive.
- Rodzilla
Thanks for the audible tip. I have now go Dan Browns latest book worth $25 on my ipod for free!
- tony swales
Regarding the SSD, is it really needed to have 128GB as the system disk? Surely 64GB as system disk and 320 or 500GB as the other disk would be just as useful and fast but much cheaper. Does anyone know if Dell does a converter like this?
- tony swales
So great to see this whole group together. In terms of G4 hosting the TechTV video archives, they use Brightcove for their video hosting. My company uses them as well and we pay a hefty flat rate for unlimited transfers and storage. I presume that G4 has the same deal, so they can post as much as they want without incurring any additional expense or having to worry about traffic.
- Alex Cutadean
Yea, it could have been much worse.
- Alex Lindsay
They just stole the car seat? Wow. I wasn't worried about your son because I know you're a responsible parent and a good guy all round, so you wouldn't leave your child alone in the car.
- Michel
I aspire to say something important enough that people talk about it somewhere other than comments on my blog post.
- Ken Sheppardson
Doesn't sidewiki work pretty much like Diigo? With Diigo, in addtion to highliting excerpts on pages it allows one to add post-it like notes.
- lelapin
Yeah, it's pretty much the same thing as diigo, lelapin.
- Ken Sheppardson
When has Google ever asked our permission to launch a service?
- Ken Sheppardson
Launching a service is different than pushing it into an existing product that millions of people already have installed.
- Ghworg
Whether I use it or not, as a blog owner it affects me.
- Ghworg
Sure it does. So does Diigo. So does FriendFeed. There are conversations happening all over the place. You can't control them. It's naive to think you can, and futile to try.
- Ken Sheppardson
Google is tea-bagging sites with SideWiki, and browsers with Google Frame
- Gabe
Sidewiki shows up only for those folks who explicitly chosen to use it. They turn it on. It's like some sort of app they install on their system. It's not as if Google imposing this on everyone who visits your site.
- Ken Sheppardson
SideWiki is working fine for me :) I have left comments on live.twit.tv as well as leoville.com Check it out and see if it's working now Leo :D
- Dylan Combs
IE causes problems for developers that other browser don't
- John Wright
But if you are in that corporate situation, you probably can't access those sites
- Johnny Worthington
I don't know about IE 7 and IE 8 as much but IE 6 is well known to be terrible... I think what the Wave team did is great
- John Wright
I made this site as kind of a joke kind of serious ... http://deathtoie6.com , it has been popular and controversial
- John Wright
However, this speaks to the problems that sites had with framing of sites with advertising by others some years ago. Google will be reaping benefit (advertising) from the content on some else's site. That was considered not desirable before and should be now. While others can comment about you on their own site, framing your site is getting unearned benefit from your work.
- JR Holmes
Great point from Gina on the Chrome Frame: IE 6 is still the most used browser and standard in many businesses. Not so sneaky way to help Google Wave get early traction as a messaging tool coordinated with Google Apps in the enterprise.
- Alex Howard
Johnny: I understand the corporate environment issue... hopefully the Chrome frame can get into those corporate computer environments
- John Wright
I think google wave will eventually take over email. Who would choose email over realtime conversation with e-mail as an added feature when it's needed?
- Dylan Combs
Being able to see me type is a bad thing. I often type in horrid insults and nasty comments, then delete them when I think better of it.
- Ghworg
Will Wave take any steam away from Twitter?
- Dave Yankowiak
Can you use GoogleWave confidentially within a business? I'd love to be able to use it to manage teams and projects
- KQT
@Ghworg you can disable that feature
- Dylan Combs
Isn't that an Apple thing though. Ultra cool technology you never knew you needed
- Johnny Worthington
The essence of Twitter is the broadcast of comments. With Wave, it keeps the conversation within the group.
- JR Holmes
Google told me I'd be getting Wave credentials in a few days. That was two months ago :-/
- Ken Sheppardson
KQT: yes I believe they said you can host your own wave server like an email server... and it can be within your own intranet also
- John Wright
@KQT On a company hosted Wave, it should be as private as internal email.
- JR Holmes
I loved Leo's 101 Stone Tool Answers You Need to Know

I've been thinking I need to read more books... I don't want to buy books and have a library though. I was thinking about a Kindle but I'm not sure. Maybe I should look into Audible, but it's not the same as reading I suppose.

I like Audible but I really wish they'd create the audio version of more textbooks

Gmail... FREE SERVICE. If you base your business email on a free, 3rd party service, your foolish
- Johnny Worthington
I thought one of the benefits of Virtualization tech was that if some parts go down the whole thing doesn't go down. I guess it's not the case with entire clouds going down... like Google App Engine a while back.
- John Wright
Google should not be doing this.. I hope they dont stop making that mod. it's just like jailbreaking the iPhone. It's not going anywhere anytime soon
- Dylan Combs
my Google Android Mod did not receive a cease and desist, in fact, I gave it to the Google Office in Ann Arbor: http://ugm.gabemcg.com/picture...
- Gabe
I tried to take a snapshot to tweet about watching TWiG Live, and when i took the screenshot Leo has a strange face on hahahah http://twitpic.com/j9l7w

It's business. No company will never been truly open
- Johnny Worthington
In my mind cell company's have been notorious for keeping things closed and getting as much money as possible (which is understandable) for their services, locking things down to make money. But as cell phones become true handheld computers, the cell companies will see more and more issues like this.
- John Wright
John Wright - I don't think it's worth talking about, but it's a little gratuitous. They're trying to gain some credibility and get their brand awareness past their search engine. I suppose it's understandable, but it feels like pandering to me.
- KQT
Yahoo owns a lot of valuable internet properties, but they really aren't doing the best with what they have. They don't seem to have a focused vision, or they haven't in the past. It seems like I've seen the start all kinds of sites/apps/products some that compete with each other. Then they will cancel some. Seems like poor management/leadership, other than that Yahoo isn't bad.
- John Wright
@KQT Yeah they're definitely trying to increase "mindshare" with it but I mean they own it and it's such a small change. It's not a feature change, it really doesn't affect the value of the service. I don't see why anyone made an uproar but that's just me :)
- John Wright
Does anyone else worry about how much Google is seaping into every facet of our digital lives? I love Google, but I have a recurring nightmare that Google uses all the information they have about us for evil someday.
- KQT
from Anil Dash - "Could apps using Twitter's new geolocation APIs protect privacy by discarding one significant digit of lat/lon for each week data is stored?"
- Atul Arora
@KQT wow, I thought about it before and I didn't see Google doing wrong... but yeah... what if!! ... they turn to the darkside ??? :(
- John Wright
It'd make for a great movie... Of course, only if Tom Cruise starred in it. lol
- KQT
How dare Google allow people to attach comments to places. Those comments should be left in those places. Like, on the wall or something. Maybe with a spray can. Fragmentation!! Fragmentation!!
- Ken Sheppardson
Next thing you know, Google will be serving ads to people when you're viewing peoples' comments about the places you're visiting.
- Ken Sheppardson
Google Places may get spammed easily. How would businesses cope with bad feedback? I don't think any business has 100% customer satisfaction rate.
- Krishna
Why doesn't Jeff object to this for the same reasons he objects to Sidewiki?
- Ken Sheppardson
That's a great idea re: checking in when you leave vs arrive.
- KQT
@Krishna that's the big thing all this social media will affect. Never before could you find so many "natural" reviews and info about a company or place. It's going to be interesting how this will change things
- John Wright
These programs which show places where you are seem very scary to me. Especially for a public person. This would be a stalkers' paradise.
- shelter watch
This cyanogen move is exactly why all counter culture is bullsh*t, and why we should just meld with "the man" because ever counter culture leader always turns on it's people, EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. So we may as well buy MacBooks and iPhones and become part of "the man"
- Matthew DeVries
I've had the contacts synced for a while, it's very nice :)
- John Wright
So fun, 3-4 weeks in I'm hooked. I just want a Magic Tablet to watch them on;-)
- Barney Lerten
Guys, how's Google Exchange battery wise?
- Michel
Michel: Google had this to say... "While this type of speed is pretty awesome, push connections tend to use more power than fetching at intervals, so don’t be surprised if your battery life isn’t quite what it used to be. We’ve done a lot of work to optimize power usage, but if you prefer to save battery life, you can always turn off push in your phone’s settings and fetch mail every 30 or 60 minutes instead."
- Jason Hansen
@Jason. Ok thanks. I see that it does come at a disadvantage. I tried it out, but since I couldn't send from multiple emails, I scrapped it. I dunno if I'm doing something wrong. I'll try it out again.
- Michel
Just posted a Sidewiki entry to this page... this Sidewiki thing could be huge... the annotated web. Others have tried to make services like this but Google could get it enough tracktion to be useful.
- John Wright
Tease: Today on TWiG: Gina Trapani gets the bad news, Android ain't open, Jeff Jarvis asks What Would Google Buy, and Leo talks sidewiki.... stay tune this week in google is coming up next!

I wish i could come on a show with Leo someday :D
- Dylan Combs
Yes indeed, excellent show. You should just change the theme music. Sounds like a fantasy book. :P
- Michel
I love the theme music! Classical music makes you smarter, right?
- Laura Norvig
Are you guys going to release the video on all platforms (miro, itunes, etc.)? Or are you going to just release on Mediafly?
- tytycoon
I think he said that they would eventually be able to post them at podcasts in iTunes and as videos on YouTube.
- Michel
Leo: re user participation in iDents - BBC three does it over here quite well?
- Phill Price
Android is under Apache 2.0 and GPL license. And Apache 2.0 as the BSD license allows to publish closed source derived from open source. So it's a good idea not to talk "Open Source" but to look at the license in any single case. This example btw shows that the GPL is the only true open source license. ;)
- Cl Attr
But if they are going to go with Mediafly, they might opt-out like what happened with Stickham.
- Michel
"Gosh I love Leaky. And for those of you wondering about what she's working on, it's the Scottish Book (aka. The Official Harry Potter Encyclopedia) in which all money made will be given to charity."
- Michel
This is an awesome app, only if I used SMS more..
- Michel
"To send SMS messages via the biteSMS network, you need to buy credits. Each credit lets you send one SMS message. Or, if you don't need credits, and just want to send SMS messages normally via your mobile carrier, then a full license is all you need." - no thanks
- Franz Sittampalam
Awsome app indeed. I've restored my iPhone to it's unjailbroken state because I could no longer live with the instability and unresponsiveness I experienced when I had it jailbroken but I do miss this app perhaps more than any other. It is exceptionally good. I wish there was some way it could make it to the appstore.

"Here is a pic of my friend's car I took today. The dust storm passed, but we also had it with rain and crazy wind. http://img62.yfrog.com/i..."

"This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques (that complicate the 3GS upgrade process) this will be a multipart release. This release starts with PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X - this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G."

I'll start: Apple TV - larger size. New software for older models. Being able to support expandable storage via the USB port would be nice.
- Roberto Bonini
iPod with Cameras. I think the iPod touch is definitely getting one. Maybe Jobs too, because he needs to come back at an event where "his health isn't the main discussion of the press, and what better event than this one?" (-Leo Laporte). And iPhone OS 3.1 too.
- Michel
Definately OS 3.1 We've been waiting an age for it.
- Roberto Bonini
OSX for non-Apple hardware! Rah, rah, rah!
- abacab
Not gonna happen, abacab. Over Job's dead body.
- Roberto Bonini
I know that all too well. The unofficial "market" is doing quite well, though!
- abacab
Yeah. Its booming. But as you day, its very unofficial. I doubt many people know here is such a thing as a hackintosh.
- Roberto Bonini
That number can only go up (and continues to do so). The EULA challenge really needs finally resolved one way or the other... and Apple will end up having to take measures either way. Legally or not, I don't think the Hackintosh is going anywhere (read: away) anytime soon.
- abacab
Defiately, but its a major departure from Apple's mindset. IF they do change it, its going to be quite clear that Apple will offer no support on any hardwaare other than thier own. They are not going to try and support a gazillion different hardware combinations.
- Roberto Bonini
I imagine quite a few people would be happy to both offer and/or receive support that didn't involve Apple directly at all, were Apple to allow it. Not that Apple ever would, but I don't believe they can actually prevent it on any practical level.
- abacab
Back to the predictions: I guess that they are going to include bluetooth for the ipod touch so p2p for games works on those devices.
- Jorge Ortiz
Yep. That seems logical as well. You have to wonder tho, since the touch is inches away from being a VOIP phone with the Skype app installed.
- Roberto Bonini
Announcement that Apple have been bought by Microsoft... hey, it's just as likely as an apple tablet pc ;)
- alphaxion
If pigs [or insert appropriate animal here] could fly..... yeah.
- Roberto Bonini
Likely. el Steveo appears to calm the faithful (and Apple's stock price)
- Roberto Bonini
iTunes 9 with a bunch of social networking stuff built in. New iPods, incl. iPod Touch with mic and Bluetooth and a camera. The Beatles join the iTMS. Steve Jobs appears.
- Trent Hamm
@Jorge: Touch 2nd gen already has BT, if you upgrade to 3.0 fw
- spice3d
iPod Touch with full Bluetooth 2.0 profile, image and video camera.
- Khürt Williams
@spice3d The Bluetooth in iPhone OS 3.0 does not do anything more useful than enable Bluetooth headphones. I want full Bluetooth 2.0 profile enabled. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Khürt Williams
I think that we are going to see the Nano with built in wifi. I agree with others that we will see a camera in the Nano, my thoughts are what good is the camera if you cant share your pics on the fly? If Jobs focuses on one thing it is making things great. Being able to take a picture is nice but having to dock the iPod to get it off is lame. Give me wifi, share pictures, sync w/ iTunes. All goodness..
- Matt Martin
Matt: Wireless syncing has never been part of the iTunes feature list. The Zune had it years ago and everyone raved about it. I don't think that will be included. But wi-Fi for sharing directly to the web would be great for the Nano or for the Classics.
- Roberto Bonini
I agree that the Beatles on iTMS is on the list. Apple plus the labels are going to make a pile of $$$$ out of that alone.
- Roberto Bonini
Continued convergence of iPhone/iPod and the computer; expansion of business platform (iTunes); and I'd like to see Paul and Ringo live with the announcement...
- Cliff Gerrish
Roberto: Wifi is a stretch but would be on my wish list for sure. Check out this post from MG Siegler on Apple's eventual move to iTunes in the cloud. http://bit.ly/54cdP Its an interesting read and when I see this paired with wifi on the Nano, I think wireless sync, wireless streaming. Putting your iTunes in the cloud opens a lot of options.
- Matt Martin
Yeah. I t would. Personally, I have more than enough HD space to store everythng so, storing stuuf on Apple's servers is only academically intersting ( most people tho will be relived). Yeah Wi-Fi plus cloud makes loads of sense.
- Roberto Bonini
Sounds like Yoko ono just pulled a fast one and let the cat out of the bad. Apparently the Beatles will be on iTunes tomorrow.
- Roberto Bonini
Beatles + iPhone with camera announcement... to steal the thunder of the Zune HD. Nothing more nothing less.
- Jim Goldstein
Was hoping for a iPod touch with a camera.
