"Mail Goggles" Fights Embarrassing E-Mail Decisions

"Ever “drunk e-mailed” an old flame, then regretted it the next morning? In what may be its most amusing feature yet, Google Labs has come up with a way to keep you from sending late-night, alcohol-induced messages that your more sober self would steer away from. Gmail engineers call the program “Mail Goggles.” When activated, the app will pop up before you send any message late on a weekend night and force you to complete some basic math problems — you know, to make sure you’re really all there." - Soup via Bookmarklet

"Welsh police attending a traffic jam used a tazer Wednesday to subdue a sheep. Traffic on the A55 Motorway in the north of Wales had come to a halt after sheep escaped from a nearby paddock. Police arrived on the scene shortly after, and attempted to heard the sheep off the motorway. One sheep however made a run for it, and a quick thinking officer tazed the sheep before it fully escaped. According to local reports, the officers than picked up the now immobile sheep, and dumped its twitchy body on the side of the road, all while being watched by motorists, including at least one small child. Police claimed in a later statement that the sheep wasn’t killed by the 50,000 volts they had shot it with. Animal rights activists were generally not amused by the incident." - Soup via Bookmarklet

Apple TV update 2.2 brings out the "Brick" - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)
October 4 at 12:52 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"So, that was like a really bad, mean, and cruel joke. But it does seem that the recent Apple TV update is bricking some Apple TVs. According to the Apple Discussion board, some users cannot get past the boot video. If the update bricks your Apple TV, it's not the end of the world (well, it is if you cannot do the following steps)." - Soup via Bookmarklet

"We'd swear this had to be some sort of spoof on the impeccable James Bond, but sadly enough, the whole thing is true. A secondhand Nikon Coolpix camera which sold on eBay for a mere £17 ($30) turned out to be a real bargain once its new 28-year old owner completed his first image dump. Along with decidedly decent snaps from his US vacation, he also found a number of "top secret" images, diagrams and sketches that have since been confirmed as MI6 material. We're talking photos of rocket launchers, hand-drawn graphics of terrorist links and all sorts of other information not at all intended for civilian eyes. 'Course, the whole thing could just be the act of one talented Photoshopper, but we highly doubt the agency would be so fortunate." - Soup via Bookmarklet

Royalty rate stays the same, iTunes Store still open - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

"The U.S. Copyright Royalty Board decided today to keep rates the same for digital music stores, kneecapping Apple's threat to shut down the iTunes Store rather than operate at a loss. The three-member board kept the royalty rate at 9.1 cents, and mandated a 24-cent rate for ringtones. The board has never before established mechanical rates for digital files." - Soup via Bookmarklet

"Nothing from the 80s belongs in today's world. The themes we cared about then are sad reminders of how naive we once were, and the fashion trends that interested us are even sadder reminders of how idiotic we were. Mac Pros accused of emitting toxic gas, placing blame on someone else - Engadget
October 1 at 3:22 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Just when Apple has started to make some friends at Greenpeace, it looks like another one of its fine products might be a wee bit toxic. According to the French newspaper Liberation, that mysterious stench emanating from your Mac Pro contains benzene -- which can irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Instead of being a mere inconvenience, that smell could be a cloud of poison gas that threatens to dizzy up, nauseate and migraine-ify you and everyone you care for. Apple has yet to issue a statement on any of this, but until it's all straightened out, those of you with the stinky Macs might want to seriously consider wearing a hazmat suit when checking your email." - Soup via Bookmarklet
