Somewhere in a drawer or under a pile of file folders you can, with a little luck, locate your wish list of adventures in Florida you haven’t done yet. Oh, I know you have one. Yep, I’ve got one of those lists too. Pulled it out of a pile of papers on the desk the other day. At the top of the list – attend the Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival. Every year I want to go, but something comes up. This year I’m determined to get there.

"One of the main lessons I’ve learned this week at the Birding Festival is that the top birders find birds by hearing them call and by knowing which habitats the birds will frequent. We needed to learn those skills to become better birders."

"I first met the friendly scrub jays when I went on a camping trip to Oscar Scherer State Park in Sarasota as a kid. These beautiful jays have no fear of humans. Since they are so habitat-specific, few people get to see them. I became reaquainted with this species this morning during a walk through the South Lake Conservation Area in Brevard County during the Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival."

I started my Wednesday morning with about 20 gull enthusiasts in a class presented by gull expert Alvaro Jaramillo. He started out with the gulls most of us are familiar with–Herring, Laughing, and Ring-billed–and showed us what to look for when trying to identify a gull.

In a Tampa Tribune article about birding, Yvette Hammett references a study released by US Fish & Wildlife showing that birding added $82 billion to the nation’s economy in 2006.
