Use Pandora, never really used Last.FM
- Andrew Leahey
love pandora, but no storm support :(. in my opinion these are all very similar so it is just personal preference i guess, but in my opinion pandora seems to give you a better mix of music.
- Zach Scott
I've been using Pandora for a while but I stumbled across Slacker the other day and it looks well built, although I haven't spent a lot of time using it yet.
- Ethan
I've found that Pandora has the best Electronic music selection, Last.fm the best rock selection and Slacker the best UI (at least in my opinion) with a great overall selection of music. Don't know why I use all three though, guess I'm a bit schizo with tech.

Pandora if I could hear it but Last.fm me, though not really tried Slacker, is it good?
- Kol Tregaskes
I wrote a blog post about this subject back in July '08 that still represents a solid opinion of the state of the various services: http://nathanchase.com/2008...
- Nathan Chase
That's why I've not tried Slacker, must be US-only! :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
@ethan not me personally. The entire world except the US and in the case of Last.fm UK and Germany. Apparently the record labels don't want us listening to their music.

I didn't even bother, I just traded mine at a gamestop with a few old games I didn't play anymore, got over a $100 (they don't take the hard drive) and just bought an Xbox Arcade, popped in the hard drive and voila!!

"Imagine getting £35 for doing absolutely nothing. Well in New York, a man is giving away stacks of cash to anyone who's prepared to stand in line for it. The mystery man, who calls himself 'Bailout Bill', says in the middle of an economic crisis ordinary Americans who are struggling to make ends meet deserve a bailout."

The time came a long time ago. Some people are simply now having it shoved down their throats. Any smart businessperson saw it coming the first time around, and anyone who was there the first time around should have seen it coming this time too.

Businesses with no expectation of profitability have never made any sense to me.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I was reading about the collapse of "2.0" (nasty term) last year. The thing that really concerns me isn't with the fall of another round of sites, but with the way that governments are eyeballing the net after the bluster of 2.0 has brought our little freedom of expression squarely before their attention. It's no conincidence that a number of high profile blog posts have lead to big meatspace shareprice batterings.. Keep an eye on Europe and the US pressing forward with a limited "push content" net plan.
- alphaxion
I'm actually curious to see how many ycombinator ("build something cool first, then find a way to profit later") startups will make it through.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
I respect your stance not to dance on the graves of companies which will fail over the coming months. However, I am not sure that all Web 2.0 applications are done for. Just as these was no place in a post 2000 world for Pets.com there are many silly applications which will disappear, but others with real benefits to users will continue, and if well managed will ultimately drive a revenue stream

I swear! It's amazing the lack of priorities people have in a crisis... Who CARES who's fault this is... we need to figure out how to fix the problem! Would you people sit around and argue about how the fire started when you're in a burning house or would you get outside and grab a hose??
It matters to them because we're only weeks away from an election - every single House member wants to be re-elected. THAT's why they're all acting like this.
- Internet's Tad
Lindsay, I made the same comment on a post just a few minutes ago and I agree. To me, today's mess is the perfect example of why we (as citizens) need to make major changes in the people we've chosen up to this point. Time to clean house.
- Steve Sebestyen
from twhirl
Just another day in politics. Don't have to actually get anything done, just need to LOOK like you're doing something.
- ronin
Screw the election... we have longer term and more immediate problems to deal with.
- Her Lindsay-ness
In this case it matters. Why on Earth would intelligent people want more of what caused the problem in the first place? The government needs to stay the Hell out of this and let the market correct itself. The storm analogy is flawed because no one can cause a hurricane. As far as the burning house analogy; do you just build another house while the pyromaniac stands there and watches with anticipation?
- Mattb4rd
+ a gazzilion for this Lindsay!!!! Well said indeed...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
i don't know if you've noticed over the past 20 or so years, but whenever there's a problem, the GOP is the first to point fingers at Democrats and minorities, yet never offer suggestions. I refuse to listen to children whine, so just ignore those types of people here and have intelligent conversations with people who can hold one.
- Anika
@Mattb4rd - I'm of the opinion that we should scrap it all and start over... and in that case the history doesn't matter who started it... They're ALL to blame but it doesn't change anything going forward if we do as Steve suggests and clean house. But that also doesn't mean we can do nothing... The market is not set up to correct itself.
- Her Lindsay-ness

from fftogo
@Gregory; That school is tougher when you're stupid. (I'm not calling you stupid, just saying life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid)
- Mattb4rd
No one said it has to be a perfect fix. There's no such thing in a world that's constantly changing. But our focus should be on that fix instead of who caused the problem. Can't make progress looking backward. Not to say you shouldn't be aware of the past (don't want history to repeat itself) but you have to move on to get anywhere better.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Lindsay, if I might tread on dangerous ground here, I do agree with you. Perhaps some are concerned as to "why" the fire was started in order that we do not make such mistakes again. If I have been informed correctly, the bail out package was simply a tourniquet to stop the massive blood loss, and allow us to operate on the issues under a little less stress. However, tendencies are to seek to blame. I have my feeling on some heads that should role, but this should not distract from us setting a course...
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
Finger pointing at a time of crisis just shows you how lame our leadership truly is...fabulously f*cked!
- Susan Beebe
Sometimes we have to dig deep and find the root cause in order to solve a problem, but this is way past that
- Susan Beebe
I hate to stretch an analogy, but you throw water on some fires and you make them spread, e.g. magnesium. I am NOT comfortable that this bill is not inflaming the problem. First do no harm.
- Eric Lewis
@Ken - I wasn't a fan of the bailout plan. I am not an economic expert so I don't really know what the best course is, but I do think that we need to get a lot of very smart people in the room and possibly kick some of the politicians out of it and have them figure out the best solution for the short term AND the long term. The blame game is wasting precious time and energy. We can take care of punishing the people who got us into this mess later.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Eric: And if it is your BEST FRIEND who is on fire? Do you do nothing and thus "do no harm" or do you act and throw water on the fire, even if it might get worse? Seriously.
- Ben Parr
Chris, thanks for the video. Very refreshing information and suspected by many. Ben, to further your analogy, stop-drop-and roll... It's the same thing as attempting to rescue a drowning person. You have to be a strong enough swimmer to save both yourself and them. Lindsay, I agree. I strongly feel that if you pull back the curtain, the Congress is listening to the voters (at least more than half). Just not the ones on TV I fear - so called leadership.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
Ben: We gotta go to war now! NOW NOW!! WMD WMD!!! NOOW!! Sound familiar? The ONLY time I want government to act quickly is when the ENTIRE nation is in agreement. And sad to say, we just aren't on the approach to this problem. Until we are, slow is what we are gonna get.
- Berial
Ben Parr: So you would feel better about yourself, having killed your best friend faster and with more pain? To each his own, I guess. In this case, I don't see the panic. Margin calls are a bitch, but extending them is no answer.
- Eric Lewis
I don't think a bailout is going to fix the fundamental flaws in our economy. At best we can push off the real pain to our kids. But I think we have done enough to screw up their future already.
- Seth Gottlieb
from twhirl
Brian, thank you! That is what I'm saying too... Let's get some education on this... Not TOO much, but enough to help us through what is a very complex issue for the average American. I think America is very divided on issues at this point. Just look at poll numbers, just look at the $700B bail-out plan vote. Lindsay, what I fear we are allowing this issue do to all of us is spread the disaster scenario even further, we are allowing someone else to dictate the pace of our actions - which you know is flawed.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
It's posts like this that make me understand where panic originates. Those shouting FIRE are convinced of their righteousness.
- Eric Lewis
Eric, sorry if you think I'm being righteous, but if it's being righteous to suggest that we need to be more concerned about the future than the past then I am fine with being labeled that way. All I care about is finding the best solution for this problem and spending our time and research effort trying to figure out who's to blame does nothing. We should spend that same effort trying to understand the consequences of our next actions and pick the best option. Egos be damned.
- Her Lindsay-ness

I ask because too many people I am around on a daily basis aren't. Real head-in-the-clouds stuff: "I'm doing all right. I think it's all a media thing." They're also some of the people, I suspect, who are running to an ATM to pull cash out of the bank right now.
- Steven Perez
I've got debt, but cash to cover it as I take advantage of 0% rates right now... With the changes in the market, I'm slowing down the amount I pay on that debt to keep cash on hand (as my cash is earning my interest).

- Blake N. Cooper
If you go by the numbers the GOP is to blame, yes, the DEMS could have passed it alone but it didn't pass. THAT'S the issue. EVERYONE in Washington is to blame for not have their shit worked out. Time to put aside personal agenda's and focus on the country, this is why we elected these bozos. To me, this is just proof we need to do some housecleaning (no pun intended).
- Steve Sebestyen

Isn't Nancy Pelosi a senator? What does she have to do with the house vote? I think the house is run by Harry Reid.

It's clear that there was bipartisan objection to this bill. You can't blame one party or another for its failure.

the problem is the Ameircan public was against it and let their reps know. I blame leadership for not explaining in a way the public understood the ramifications of doing nothing. If you have heard the arguments and understand them reasonably well and still oppose it fine. But many in the public just think I am not willing to help millionaries out.
- R. Ferguson
Using these numbers, that means ~60 Republicans and ~140 Democrats voted FOR the bill.
- Nathaniel Payne
I actually think this is a good thing. Both dems and repubs had valid issues with this rush to bail everyone out without data or confidence that it will work. We need to get this done right, not just quickly.

Three words - FLIP THIS HOUSE. When you buy a house for 100k, make 50k worth of improvements, and sell it for 300k less than 3 months later.. . .um, yeah, it's going to have an effect. The behavior was only encouraged by banks, Home Depot, the TLC network, etc.

Tad, it's that mentality that's going to lose the election for Barack if the polls remain close. I posted a message earlier that during an informal poll this weekend among friends (and I'm ashamed) that 4 out of 15 people OPENLY indicated they would NOT vote for Barack because he's black. I live in the NYC area and this came as a shock to me. Vote against him for his policies, not his skin color. I'm disgusted and am seriously rethinking some of my friendships. Racism is alive and well, unfortunately.

I clicked your links Tad and I saw the article -- but where's the meme? If there are people on FriendFeed blaming Blacks for the crisis, I want to know about it.

It's not so much a FF meme as a political discussion meme across all outlets. Of course, if $700 Billion had REALLY been spent on mortgages for minorities, wouldn't ALL minorities have a nice house now?

many of the pundits who have shows and continuous appearances on FOX have stated this unapologetically (cavuto, malkin, hannity, coulter, etc). it's like a memo went out somewhere along the line to come out and make this part of economic downfall in order to garner support for their side. it's no coincidence
- Cee Bee
no, its not the a-holes at the top who got greedy? Lets just blame a major portion of the population that couldn't afford how ridiculous the housing market had gotten, and followed the golden carrot they projected in front of them. And by the way I know plenty of white sub-prime borrowers. Racism pisses me off, majorly.
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
It's not even honest racism. It's cold, cynical fake racism. These folks don't REALLY believe that black people caused the crisis. They're just saying it in an attempt to rally the extremely ignorant and racist elements of their base. The same folks who think Obama is a sekkrit Muslim. They're in a panic mode because the majority of their base is demoralized and they're trying to rally any troops that'll listen.
- Internet's Tad
If you are in the market for the long run, this is a BUY opportunity. If everyone continues to sell, the snowball will continue to grow. Find the strong companies and be ready to watch the market flux. I'm putting more money into the market in the next few days.
Agree, now if I only had the time to find the strong companies...
- ronin
You're not wrong. Long term you are right. It's the short term (next two years) that could get pretty uncomfortable. There is potentially more pain on the downside. I would take a dollar-cost-averaging approach to coming back into the market. (IE, if you have $10,000 to come back in, put $1,000 in every month). That will protect your $10,000. You might miss some gains, but you might miss a lot of pain too.
- Robert Scoble
I think you're right, Justin... Wish I was one of the lucky ones who had the extra money sitting around enough to invest.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Even if you don't have the money to invest, but you have money in the market, as long as your investments are in solid companies, don't panic. Panicking will only fuel the "depression" further.

If you have any cash lying around. It's good advice overall, but right now its very volatile. All should be very careful on what they buy into. Flight to quality.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
@Robert - Good advice. This is actually investing 101. You should never invest $10,000 all at once, but rather spread it out over 10 months at 1,000 per month or 20 months even at $500 per month.
- Justin Korn
Yes, the smart buy when everyone else is panicking.

Couldn't agree more Justin, my companys Stock Purchase plan period just ended and as an employee I immediately get 15% over my initial investment. I've cashed out and am reinvesting into the market. With many stocks so depressed now's the time to make a great buy.
