"I have been discussing exactly the opposite of what Rubel's thesis is - influence is not related to PageRank. This is especially true in social media. PageRank is an excellent way to gauge the influence of the information you provide. But to measure the amount of influence you have in a community or a conversation goes to an article Jay Deragon (http://tinyurl.com/4yoalt) about the effect of trust and reputation. There is currently no algorithmic way to measure trust and reputation, and its effect on the conversations we are having. In some respects, PageRank is an excellent way to represent the content-driven Web. It can find what a person is searching for and deliver results that match the terms of interest. PageRank, however, cannot deliver results that match the context of the search, the conversation the searcher is seeking to join, the like-minded community the searcher seeks. Sometimes information is not enough." - Stephen Pierzchala

"Exactly. My blog started as discussion of politics, life, and my travels. It morphed into a discussion of my Web performance service, my battle to get a Green card, and bipolar. Now I talk about Web performance strategy and advertising/marketing/branding/conversations/community. Who knows where this will go? Who knows who will read what I write? You write because you have something to say, and then you respond to those who read what you write and have something to say. In the end, it's the conversation within whatever community you participate in that defines your online reputation." - Stephen Pierzchala

"In some senses, the hyper-connected suffer from community dilution. While what they say reaches large numbers of people, it misses the niche markets that your team at FreshNetworks are trying to build. My main area of expertise is Web performance measurement and strategy. Many of the A-listers (to use an archaic term) don't care about this, so I have my own community that I monitor and interact with in this area. There are leader in this community who are almost invisible to the larger community but who carry substantial cred in the Web performance community. So, should someone who is big in a niche community be ignored? No. Should the hyper-connected be ignored. No. But conversation and community are not about blindly following the piper - and you and your team get that." - Stephen Pierzchala
