FOX Freakout Over Unretouched Palin Photo On Newsweek Cover

makes me want to puke that this is on national TV... - Jeremy Toeman
thosu plastic dolls that pass for reporters on Faux news would freak over an eyelash falling down. - Mavericks of Troy, NV! via fftogo
they are right... every one close up can be unglified. pathetic journalism Newsweek. they are welcome to editorialize, but this is not transparent. Julia Piscitelli is FUGLY.... I guess she is blind because she looks in the mirror every morn'n - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
would you like ur picture taken Helen? I'm an artist - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Fox is a travesty and Murdoch should be ashamed of himself. I'm not a US dude but I discovered Fox news a wee while ago. Horrific partisanship. RM should be tarred and feathered and run on a rail. Seriously. - john conroy
John, it's a known fact here in the US that Faux News gets all of it's main talking points from the Bush Admin. Even Canada has banned Faux news from it's airwaves for being a network of propaganda. - Mavericks of Troy, NV! via fftogo
it's in his interest. saddest thing is alot of people listen to it and actually fucking believe it. damn rupert. - genieyclo
yes, this is definitely what we should be talking about. - dkb
The 2 chicks on the right appear to be complete and total morons. - RAHwsomeSHEENsauce™
Kinda ridiculous to hate on Fox and not the other networks. It's blind to pretend Fox isn't conservative, and it's blind to pretend the other nets aren't liberal. Most people (hmmm, oddly enough) rail against only those opposite their own views, because the others match their worldview and seem to be simple facts (makes sense). I disagree with and hate them all, and am here to tell ya -- they're all biased one way or the other. And they all suck at delivering news, biased or not. Why watch? - Jeremy Thompson
See http://www.pdnpulse.com/2008/0... for an instance of a Democrat photographer intentionally leaving McCain pics unretouched, admittedly. It's all dumb stuff, people being swayed by this, but we know it's a statistical reality. All things considered, the anchor here didn't act nuts or out of control; it was only the lady on the right. - Jeremy Thompson
The true evil of Fox is that anyone who doesn't report a story the exact way it does can be accused of having a (left) bias. In comparison, the BBC would be considered a liberal mouthpiece - poppycock of course, but that's the whole point. - dkb
Newsweek says that they don't retouch any photos as they are a news magazine. I haven't heard whether Palin was offended by this cover herself. It's more than asinine for them to even devote 5 minutes talking about this. It's subterfuge to appeal to women who feel that they themselves should be airbrushed. They've tried to paint Palin as a feminist but I doubt a feminist would be concerned with something so trivial. The insistence that she be airbrushed smacks of sexism to me. - Kenya
It's difficult to imagine anyone with a more synthetic image than Obama. Hell, we're not even allowed to speak his real name. - Rob Sterling
@dkb: That can be said of ANY agency promulgating news. They all purport it to be fact. Take, for instance, some of Gore's environmental nonsense breathlessly repeated by the likes of the BBC (and the Beeb's environmental "documentaries" that have skewed even presenters' viewpoints, to their dismay); yet anyone who took issue with them is an antiquated flat-earther, equivalent to a Holocaust denier, certainly stupid and possibly evil. - Jeremy Thompson
@Kenya: Sorry, that sexism charge doesn't work. Not even close. We're talking in the same piece about whether Obama (a man, btw) was touched up. I pointed to the last big retouching article about McCain (also a man). The problem isn't male/female, nor is it really about our body images and wellness. It's about relative treatment among individuals and parties in the media. Newsweek need not touch everyone up, since most covers aren't as close up as Palin's, and wouldn't require it. - Jeremy Thompson
What a bunch of crybabies. - Chris Baskind
The best thing about this is that there's a partisan scream about the magazine not being SUPERFICIAL enough haha. - Eric Rice
WAAAA... She looks horrible. She isnt the hot VPMILF that we lust over. Now she is real and looks like my older aunt. - Christopher Welle
Even if you completely ignore the political aspect...Those chicks are freaking dumb. I can't believe they are allowed to talk about news on national television. - RAHwsomeSHEENsauce™
it isn't like this is a legal issue. Newsweek has a right 2b asswipes & CNN has a right to do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... fact is it is fair game. that isn't the issue. issue is will we take Newsweek seriously in the future or will they start wining like the NYTimes &blame it all on the pains of print media, when it is their behavior that turned us off? Advertising down? you have a website Mr Publisher. maybe it is time to relate to the people instead of being hypocritical snobs. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ

"Steven Hodson, over at the Inquistr blog, says “the sky isn’t falling” and “What do we get instead? We get people like Robert Scoble who have for the last few days done nothing more than highlight everything bad going on.” Ahh, yes, ye olde blame the messenger post." - Hutch Carpenter
Well it IS funny, people not spending and taking money out of banks because of the NON STOP cries of 'Banks Failing'. What in the absolute hell would you expect people to do? Go buy a car? I'm not denying there's this issue, but I'm wondering (similar to being sick and googling yourself sicker) if that psychological part isn't part of the fuel. In a way, that puts us very close to the round-the-clock-eye-on-explosion coverage we get from the MSM. Offer solutions, it will bring you more traffic anyway. - Eric Rice
This is starting to piss me off. The LAST thing we need is for the MSM and bloggers to get wussy and start saying "everything's okay, don't panic". That bull kept the public from acting in regards to the Iraq War and all the other BS that Bush co pulled over on us for the last 8 years. If we see whole scale government intervention in the markets to where this country basically turns socialist, there better be a freaking revolution. Any body who claims to believe in the "free market" should be pissed. - Jason Kaneshiro
Well, the problem is that pulling all your money out of the bank causes the bank to fail. Chicken or egg? - Cyndy
Screw the bank, mine already failed (WAMU). I won't stand for my hard earned money to be used as collateral for shitty loans that never should have been made in the first place. - Jason Kaneshiro
Jason: interesting that you still have a "let the whole economy burn" approach just to punish those who caused this to happen. - Robert Scoble
@Jason - I have never said everything is okay I'm not that stupid or naive regardless of what some might be suggesting. I know things are going to get tough - hell they could get nasty but I am only trying to stress that this overly negative prose being used to describe what is happening isn't helping matters at all. We can be realistic about the current situation without having to scare the ever loving shit out of everyone. - Steven Hodson
I am increasingly convinced that the people who are looking for a solution (this weekend) have absolutely no idea what they're doing. It's getting really close to abandon ship, save yourself mode. - Jason Kaneshiro
Steven: I wasn't negative enough. ABC Radio just reported that the World Bank is saying that the financial system worldwide is very close to melting down. Nothing I can say can make things worse. Nothing. - Robert Scoble
Steven, I agree with your last statement. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Fear is a powerful motivator. It gets people to start acting instead of being passive pushovers, which is what the american people have been guilty of for too many years. If this economic turmoil scares some joe six pack into voting Obama, I say that's a good thing. And let's be clear - the Bush administration and all the rich cronies are the ones saying calm down, don't panic. Sound a bit familiar to "stay the course?" - Jason Kaneshiro
Jason, IMHO this is a bi-partisan mess we are all in ;-) - mainly b/c a greedy few took advantage of American closing its eyes. We are all to blame, and I'm voting for the candidate that steps up and says we all have to buckle up and time to get back to business. Small problem though, there hasn't been one, yet! Both are too busy pointing fingers... I did like Obama's stance on AIG execs though :-) Skewer those guys. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
... and by AIG execs - I'm referring to the expensive retreat just days after their $85B bailout landed. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
You mean the one Obama lied about? Where there were no execs involved, where it had been paid for months before, and where they were rewarding their best independent salespeople? Yup, let's start skewering those execs who reward their salespeople, that'll surely make sales go through the roof. - Wichita Lineman
Glen, what happened to the Southwest Airlines mentality? When times got tough, everyone sucked it up and took it. I have a hard time believing AIG didn't know troubled times were ahead... - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Obama also put forth the idea to increase FDIC insurance, another good idea http://blogs.abcnews.com/polit... - Jason Kaneshiro
Quote from CNN.com:Days after it got a federal bailout, American International Group Inc. spent $440,000 on a posh California retreat for its executives, complete with spa treatments, banquets and golf outings, according to lawmakers investigating the company's meltdown. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Ken: there's a little bit of another story to that retreat story. They paid the hotel a long time ago and signed contracts. That's how the hotel industry works. If I think I'm going to run a good event next June I'd have to put up a deposit and sign a contract saying I'll pay a certain price. Not able to cancel just because the economy goes south. - Robert Scoble
Don't get me wrong here: (a) it looks bad, and (b) they've cancelled future ones. Canceling that one, however, would have not saved any taxpayer money at all. Ugly, yes, but Obama's statements were incorrect. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/200... - Wichita Lineman
Robert and Glen, I can appreciate the reservation aspect. However, from a PR standpoint this is disastrous. Much more expensive to go. Additionally, canceling a 'hotel' is often not a huge deal and done quite often - even for a large group. Not to mention the air fare, spa treatments, meals, etc. For the record, I'm not worried about saving tax payers money. This does show why AIG was in trouble though - no common sense. If you can disagree with this, I would have to question yours as well ;-) - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Ken: I don't disagree that the PR impact is huge and that was stupid. - Robert Scoble
Glen: good read on the link. Thank you. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Ken, I would agree with your assessment that they are lacking in common sense. They also have serious management problems; if you can stay awake, try reading through some of the Waxman committee transcripts. The AIG board has never been graded higher than a C by an independent outside reviewer. - Wichita Lineman
Wow, is all I have to say. The recession really doesn't scare me, but I am just flabbergasted at how such companies could continue to thrive. I had posted something on my blog from This American Life, that really drove a lot of this mess home for me... It was an amazing read, and I may just look into the Waxman transcripts. thanks. - ChangeForge | Ken Stewart
Robert - To say those who would prefer to look forward and have expressed it here on Friendfeed doesn't mean we've been discredited (Your comment on Fred Wilson's blog) or that we're not aware of what is going on. These are unprecedented times in our lifetimes (90% of us) which translates to NOBODY knows what's going to happen next. I'd much rather not have our college students and young people thinking the world is coming to an end (and for the record, I'm not currently filthy rich) - Charlie Anzman

Spencer, what? This investigation was underway before she was ever selected as the VP candidate. This would have happened whether McCain picked her or not, and it's a pretty big ethics violation, don't you think? Or is okay since she's a GOP candidate? - Cyndy
Spencer: the investigation into Palin had already been started *before* she was tapped for the VP nomination, not to mention it was started by the senate of her own state government. Not sure how 'they' would have anything to do with investigating Obama. - Stupid Emoo (aka Tina)

"The Imagine Peace Tower is a work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. It is dedicated to peace and bears the inscription 'IMAGINE PEACE' in 24 languages. Its construction and installation is a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy. The work is in the form of a wishing well from which a very strong and tall tower of light emerges. The strength, intensity and brilliance of the light tower continually changes as the particles in the air fluctuate with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland. Every year it will light up between October 9th (Lennon's birthday) and December 8th (the day of his death)." - Vincent X

Mmmm, dystopian such a great word. I doubt this would happen, but what does it say about our place in the world if there's even one riot in another country? - Greg Hollingsworth
News that the Army now has permanent troops stationed in the US to manage these types of issues is not making me feel safer. I've seen too many peaceful activists labeled as "terrorists" or worse, fascists! This country is so confused that the shit will hit the fan quick....and the RIOT COPS will hit about 30 seconds later. We saw what happened when a few thousand people walked through the streets of St. Paul, MN last month; tear gas and pepper spray, 1 in 35 people were arrested for peacefully walking through the streets. We as a people are going to have to be brave enough to stand up to some serious threats very soon and we are poorly prepared. - evonne
That's the topic of discussion--- that an Obama loss could affect the moods and spirits of OTHER nations SO MUCH, that disaster ensues. - Eric Rice
Very interesting prediction. You do know they have deployed American troops in various urban locations [ zhttp://www.alternet.org/rights... ] why? Your guess is as good as mine. But keep in mind, in the Ukraine, people took to the streets to contest fraud - peacefully and powerfully - via the orange revolution. The result? The restoration of the rightful winner of their election. - Mel "de Silentio" McB
I have to say this: if Obama loses to McCain, then I know the entire concept of America is over if it ever existed as anything other than a piece of history class indoctrination. If he lost legitimately, without any electoral hanky-panky (and how would we know?) then I would also know the entire concept of humanity as something more or greater than just a beast with a particularly interesting behavior pattern is also over. "What a piece of work is man", indeed. /scorn - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
The real question for me is whether Obama would "lose" (a properly democratic election with no scandal or fraud) or whether it might be stolen from him illegally. - Mel "de Silentio" McB
I see very passionate opinions on our election from people outside the US... while this might seem weird, it's not. When Princess Diana died, there was an international outpouring of emotion. Same with 9/11. So I don't think it's impossible, but what might that say overall? Imagine the embassy bombings or violence against Americans abroad... the US might not see that coming (and certainly not need the headache). But it's a disaster scenario nonetheless (and I think unlikely, but worth a thought. - Eric Rice
If that happens, Bush will declare martial law. - Jason Kaneshiro

I don't want to discuss. I don't want this kind of stuff in the air. - Francine Hardaway via twhirl
i can see water riots, anti-corruption riots, off in the future .. not about obama - Gregory Lent
I can see this unfortunately. It seems to me that an Obama loss may be construed as a rigged election, in which case the people may rise and take to the streets. And the mob mentality may spread, fuelled purely by anger against the ruling elite: banking/politicians/big business cartel. Not sure I'd blame the unruly mob, to be honest. - john conroy
