I recently read The Navigator by Clive Cussler. In this novel, Jefferson had found a historical item written in a language he didn't know. Jefferson sent the article to Lewis to find out how it compared to the native languages that Lewis had learned. The story is that Lewis was on his way to Washington to talk to Jefferson about it in person when he was supposedly murdered.
