Yes, we can get unlocked phones without a subscription in Europe, but they're still way too expensive. I'd like to see Google (or some company) sell only unlocked GSM phones (supporting both US and Euro frequencies) at greatly discounted prices (thus taking a cut) just to get the hardware out there, so more people will use their software and/or search engine. Microsoft did this with the Xbox, and it was quite successful.

"My main interest is in programming languages and software construction in general, and functional programming, program transformation and model driven software development in particular. I am very interested in program calculation based on programming algebras, and I am looking into how to apply this theory to automatic program optimization, systematic parallelization of sequential programs, efficient manipulation of structured documents, and bidirectional model transformation for software development."

If this actually comes to fruition and it's available at a reasonable price (i.e. much less than €600), I might even consider getting one. Then, I could get an inexpensive data-only contract and not have to pay for a ton of mobile minutes that I won't use. Possibly my first venture into smartphone territory...

I'm wondering how much press the Copenhagen summit is getting in the US. One look at http://www.cnn.com/ tells me "not much." On the front page, I only see an article about the "leaked climate text" at the bottom of the "World" section. If I then look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/ , the top headline is "EU summit struggles on climate pledge." This is one reason why the rest of the world is pissed off at the US: the media and/or the public doesn't care that much.

Yes, more competition! Also... """ For readers, the venture promises the ability to buy content once and then be able to read it on multiple devices. Currently, newspapers purchased on the Amazon Kindle reading device cannot be read on Sony Corp.'s Reader, for example. "Once purchased, this content will be 'unlocked' for consumers to enjoy anywhere, any time, on any platform," Squires said. """

Sad... I just wrote a lab assignment for the first-year Functional Programming course in which I encouraged students to use "View Source" for HTML.
