Ineligible Bachelors: Indian Men Living in U.S. Strike Out - WSJ.com - http://online.wsj.com/article...
You know we are in a deep recession when Indian parents don't want their daughters to be married off to eligible Indian bachelors living in the U.S. :) - Bindu Reddy from Bookmarklet
Whoa. That's crazy. That would have to be hard on a traditional young guy looking to settle down. I wonder if many them are going to more open to marrying an American-raised woman. - Admiral Anika
"During a two-week wife-hunting trip to India in December, Mr. Marwaha interviewed 20 potential brides in 10 days. He says several parents asked him, "How has the recession impacted your job?" Mr. Marwaha says he assured them he hadn't been affected at all, but still he returned to the U.S. brideless." - Daniel J. Pritchett
There is a fascinating discussion on this topic at Hacker News - Deepak Singh
This actually reminds me of the early 90s. A lot of my friends going back to India and Pakistan to find wives, but the economy was bad, it was hard. 5 years later, most of them had better luck. - Admiral Anika
And that Hacker news discussion is here http://news.ycombinator.com/item... - Daniel J. Pritchett
The Hacker discussion is silly. Most of the comments seem like they didn't even read the article and they went completely off-topic. - Admiral Anika
Anika, I think there are some Indian men who tend to be a bit narrow and would prefer only Indian women. Since there are not that many single Indian women here in the U.S. this might be affecting them pretty badly. Also these guys tend to be pretty shy and that means that it is even harder for them to meet anyone - Bindu Reddy
They did, but it's interesting what people latch on to and then the discussion just goes from there. - Deepak Singh
I knew an Indian guy in college with me at Alabama who was looking for an Indian Catholic in Alabama. I don't know if he ever found her. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I personally got burned by one of these free-floating Indian bachelors right before I met my current boyfriend. I wish they weren't so closed-minded (on average) about serious relationships with non-Indian women. He acted nice enough and we became very close, but there was finally this barrier he refused to cross, and it made me feel less than human and disgusted. After what finally happened I never wanted to speak to him again. Glad I have someone who loves me now, no matter my origin and color. - Kamilah Gill
Thanks for sharing that Kamilah, it sounds pretty rough :/ - Daniel J. Pritchett
It was, Daniel, but at least it has a happy ending :) I couldn't be much happier with the boyfriend I have now. That's how stuff goes sometimes, I guess. But boy, did it hurt at the time. - Kamilah Gill
Sorry to hear Kamilah.. Hopefully, that will all change in the next couple of years - Bindu Reddy
hope so, too, Bindu. People should be free to love one another regardless of race and such things if they individually choose to. It'll be great when all cultures become more supportive of this and move beyond that archaic way of thinking (many Americans are just as guilty as these particular Indians in this kind of discrimination). - Kamilah Gill
NYT just wrote about Indian mothers and their suns. There's some kidn of fascination with American media and Indian family life... - anna sauce
interesting. here is the article - http://www.nytimes.com/2009... - Bindu Reddy
Wow, that is terrible... but for some reason, I attract Indian men. My friends call me a magnet LOL - Mona Nomura
Well, I know that as a Muslimah here in the US, there wasn't a chance in hell any of the Pakistani, Indian, Egyptian, Lebanese, etc guys at my mosque were going to marry me. Their parents liked me fine, but being black it wasn't going to happen and many of them even said that if I was light like my mother, that it could have been a possibility. Moved on, I did. - Admiral Anika
Ack, Anika - you are well rid of them! [addressed comment to the correct person...] - WorldofHiglet
Anika: Wise. Their loss. - Vijayendra (V-Mo) Mohanty
WorldofHiglet.. I was wondering what you were talking about :) - Bindu Reddy
....it's nothing to do with the 2 beers I had. That's the only thing we can be sure of....:) - WorldofHiglet

Washington's Gift - WSJ.com - http://online.wsj.com/article...
"This was -- is -- the most important moment in American history. The man who could have dispersed this feckless Congress and obtained for himself and his soldiers rewards worthy of their courage was renouncing absolute power. By this visible, incontrovertible act, Washington did more to affirm America's government of the people than a thousand declarations by legislatures and treatises by philosophers." - Paul Buchheit
Wow, Washington kicked ass in so many ways. I was impressed reading another story about him before, where his soldiers wanted to defect and he convinced them to stay by revealing how he had gone half-blind in the service of his country. I think he almost cried then too. He seems to cry a lot. But hey, whatever works. - niniane
What has always fascinated me is how much he doubted himself, yet still was a remarkable leader (read 1776 if you haven't, good book). I always found him more "human" than many leaders of the past because of the amount of humility he showed in his correspondence. - Bret Taylor

The Checklist: If something so simple can transform intensive care, what else can it do? - http://www.newyorker.com/reporti...
The Checklist: If something so simple can transform intensive care, what else can it do?
"They calculated that, in this one hospital, the checklist had prevented forty-three infections and eight deaths, and saved two million dollars in costs." - Paul Buchheit
If only there were some simple tool for making lists.. - Paul Buchheit
I hope they have checklists at whichever ICU I may end up. - Sean Leather
Possibly more a function of mechanically following expert advice in complex situations rather than a benefit of checklists per se? - Florian
Maybe if you had an undistracted expert standing there giving advice. "The checklists provided two main benefits ... they helped with memory recall, especially with mundane matters that are easily overlooked in patients undergoing more drastic events ... [and] to make explicit the minimum, expected steps in complex processes." I'm sure you could find another way to provide expert advice to be followed mechanically, but it would probably be more expensive than a checklist. - Seth
The problem is that humans are not very reliable. We forget things easily and make a lot of mistakes. Checklists provide a very simple sort of automation where the paper replaces our feeble memory. This also has the benefit of freeing up cognitive resources for other tasks. - Paul Buchheit
Hope Sibley Memorial has a checklist. - Ontario Emperor
