Meyer is smart to step down by now
2 national championships and a Heisman. I wonder how long it took ESPN to fly someone out there with some papers for him to sign? - LANjackal
He's going out on top (relatively), and in a place that expects championships the future isn't bright. They lose Tebow+24 seniors. They've lost assistants in recent years, the recruiting isn't what it was(but still better than most) and there is this guy named Saban who moved into the neighborhood. He goes now, he is a legend with unlimited could've beens, he stays, he's going to be 2nd to 3rd in his division with an occasional first - RAPatton from iPhone
Yeah Bama's the new SEC king now, they proved that in ATL. I haven't seen a team play a more complete, efficient game like that since USC tore OU apart in 2004. I think Saban's finally found the sweet spot between power football and high scoring play. If they beat Texas the Gators will lose all of GA, LA and a chunk of TX for recruiting. Mack Brown knows this will have detrimental effect on UT recruitment too. It is absolutely imperative that the Longhorns win in January. - LANjackal
I am not an SEC guy, but the Longhorns are going to get whacked. - RAPatton from iPhone
I know it too, don't think I'm here deluding myself. But I'm relying on the last 4 Heisman winners losing their bowl games. Back in 2006 OSU was forecast to blow UF out of the stadium. If you recall, the Gators had had a really spotty season up to the SEC championship game, when they suddenly decided to be serious. UT's played better this year than the Gators did in 2006. UT'll be playing with a chip on their shoulder because no one expects them to win, especially with Colt McCoy breaking every Longhorns record and yet being denied a Heisman. - LANjackal
They are reporting it is a heart muscle defect; perhaps the Percy Harvin stuff had him seek no UF medical advice that opened his eyes - RAPatton from iPhone
I am hoping he is stepping down for those reason (health). Rumors flying around here in N. Florida are he's angling for an NFL job and using this health issues to facilitate a contract release. I think that is too many "Bull Gators" hopped up on liquor talking, but you never know (re: Saban never leaving LSU...or Miami). As for the Saban & Alabama king of the hill scenario, it's possible...but I still think Saban could bolt if tempted just right. He's just not the type for a long term relationship. - JA Castillo
If Meyer bolts he takes the Curse of Steve Spurrier with him. Steve was the Greatest Thing on Earth until he thought he'd done it all and was too good to stay at Florida. He's accomplished absolutely nothing since, the Old Ball Coach is a fucking Has Been. Except earn the ire of the entire Gator Nation, that is. If Meyer jumps to the NFL or elsewhere, I'd be miffed - Why can't the Gators get a coach who's committed to the school like Carroll is to USC, JoePa is to Penn State and Bowden was to FSU? I really hope to God that's NOT what Meyer's doing, because it would be lowest move possible. - LANjackal
Saban could leave, but even if he did it isn't an easy road. If you look at recent years, coaches have the greatest success while the institutional memory of the previous regime was still there. Stoops, Tressel, Miles, etc. As the previous coaches get farther away, what was good about them fades and Florida recruits well, but not as well as it did. I don't think Urban is angling for the NFL, I think the medical condition is real and the pressure of the monster is getting to him along with the realization, it isn't going to be easy - RAPatton from iPhone
Kyle Whittingham from Utah. HIRE HIM. NOW. Someone just threw out the name of Bobby Petrino (sp) at Arkansas. Over my dead body. - LANjackal
