New Canon 5D Mark II, $2,700, 21.1 Megapixels, Full Frame Sensor, Anti Dust Technology, Shoots HD Video
New Canon 5D Mark II, $2,700, 21.1 Megapixels, Full Frame Sensor, Anti Dust Technology, Shoots HD Video
September 17 at 6:42 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
The new camera will sell for an estimated price of $2,700. It will have a full frame 21.1-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 imaging processor and an expanded ISO sensitivity range from ISO 50 to ISO 25,600. It will shoot at 3.9 frames per second (a disappointment to some who were hoping for a faster camera). Canon says that the new camera will be available at the end of November. It will also shoot 16:9 full 1080 HD video. The maximum length for videos on the new camera will be 4 GB per clip or 30 minutes, whichever comes first. The new camera will also have an input terminal for external microphones in addition to it's built in sound. - Thomas Hawk via Bookmarklet
Glad to see it's finally here. Sounds like a great camera - here's hoping it has or improves upon the superb image quality and low-light performance of the original. - Tom Harrison
I'm a "Nikonian" but something like this is would make me very, very happy - João Almeida
I really wish I were a good enough photographer (or wealthy enough) to justify this. It sounds absolutely fantastic. - James Williams (willia4)
How long before you snag one, Thomas? - Jordan Hofker
Been a long time coming. I want one. - Dave Stanley
I'm a little disappointed in the fps but, overall, I'm counting the days 'til I pick one up - Shawn Duffy via twhirl
I'm excited. The 5D is my workhorse camera, this update adds so many cool features, right at the core of the camera. It addresses its (few) weaknesses, too. 25,600 ISO? nice! 3.9fps? Nice - I really didn't need 5fps for sports, even 3 was fast enough for me. Live View 1080p HD video?!?!? Awesome! Now I know what I want for Channukah. :-) - David Sifry via twhirl
$2700? Cha-ching! And yet, if it were a video camera with those capabilities, I wouldn't blink an eye. We're seeing the collision of two photographic schools. Notice, an SLR is still shaped like its chemical-film-loaded predecessors. That's the only thing that makes this a "still" camera. - Rick Wolff
Jordan, I'll buy one as soon as I can from B&H. Not sure if they are taking pre-orders or not yet but going to check on that later this morning. - Thomas Hawk
Dave I agree with you on the 3.9 fps being enough. Personally I'm doing more fine art photography than sports stuff and I rarely shoot burst. It's only been a few times when I've been out there that I've wished for faster frame speed. 3.9 fps is plenty fast for me. - Thomas Hawk
Now I'm kinda pissed about my recent 12mp XSi purchase =/ - Stupid Emoo (aka Tina)
I'm glad this will be around when my original 5D stops working. I was getting worried they might abandon the model and come up with something else that would be a pro upgrade that I don't need. - Tom Harrison
I am $2,700 dolllars away from purchasing this. I wonder how much I can get for my kids. - iMorpheus via twhirl
Most definitely on the "want" list, but having just spent some moola, it may be awhile before this ends up in my bag. - Jeremy Hall
wow! - Susan Beebe
noise? with so many pixels? - Gregory Lent
HD video. Wow. Guys will buy this just to record their kids. - Russellreno
Curious to see in-depth review, but its definitely the DSLR I will purchase. Thomas, any idea whether date is preserved when batteries are changed? :-) No preorder at B&H, first thing I checked when I saw your post. - JodyUnwired
Jeff Henderson found a link to some sample video clips: http://www.pdnpulse.com/2008/0... - Andre Maltais
Tina, I just got the same camera (the XSi). I'm loving it. And I'll definitely use it for a good long while. Buy good lenses for it and you'll be set when the time comes to upgrade. - Jordan Hofker
Thomas, I'm looking forward to a "hands on" with this camera from you. - Jordan Hofker
Jordan, that's my intent. Still working with the original Canon kit lens and debating on what to get next... - Stupid Emoo (aka Tina)
Wow, thanks for the link, Andre. Those videos are pretty impressive. - J. McConnell
I hope Santa Claus will give me one of these this year :) - imabonehead

@Pete thanks for the heads up about John Cleese. I knew he was on Twitter but I didn't know he was here too. - Mark Wilson
@Abby it would be nice if Hollywood could come up with a few new ideas. I love horror movies & it seems that every mainstream horror flick that's coming out is a remake. It's really frustrating. - Mark Wilson

Excellent movie!!! - Nils Sandin
one of my most favorite films of the last few years. - Jason Toney
an ok movie, there is an amazing one-shot towards the end - Ryan
Really awesome movie. - Eric
This movie blew me away. - Mike Doeff
Meh. I've had enough of dystopias. - Matthew Davidson via twhirl
I thought it was okay. There was a pretty powerful scene near the end (being vague so as not to spoil), by overall I wasn't as enamored of it as many people are. - Cheryl Jones
Didn't care for this one. - Jason Kaneshiro
Great movie, but not while giving platelets at the local blood bank. My mistake. - Mavericks of Troy, NV!
It's a good post-apocalyptic fiction (obviously) movie without being to heavy on the sci-fi. I thought the movie tied current world issues into a story about the not so distant future, and did it well, making it more believable. - cmiper
Another thing, it's worth watching this movie just for the camera work. It features some incredibly long takes and one of the most innovative and unique styles I've ever seen. - Eric
Watched it for the first time last night. Major props for the subtle use of CG, including the bits used to cover cuts and extend the single take feel. - Roger Benningfield
Looking forward to it coming out on Blu-Ray. - Akiva Moskovitz
nice idea, a bit rushed execution. somehow, it feels a bit bland - Engin Erdogan
Extraordinary movie. Visionary, but with roots in the best of sci-fi thrillers. Disturbing and very textured. And... there's Clive Owen. [love!] - Donna Mugavero
the making of the 'one-shot' is a story onto itself. this is the kind of movie that in the future will be a classic. i cannot watch it in its entirety over and over but there are quite a few scenes that i never get tired of. personally, i loved it. it will be interesting to hear what the interpretation of this movie is, coming from the eye of a pretty seasoned photographer. in all its ugliness, i find it quite beautiful. - Carlos Ayala
Intense movie, if there ever was one. Watch the extras, they show you the filming of a couple of the more exciting scenes and I had an enhanced appreciation of what goes into a chase scene. - Mark Interrante
Love the movie. Makes me so proud a Latino directed it. And Clive Owen gives a performance so unlike him. Great pick. - Juan Carlo Rodríguez
@juan, why does it make you proud a latino directed it? - Gregory Lent
odd. We were just talking about this movie yesterday. Great flick. - tj hanton
brilliant soundtrack! - Benedikt Koehler
Perhaps I'll watch it again to see the cinematography. Maybe when I watched it I wasn't in the proper mood for it. - Cheryl Jones
a film only 4 fun - MeŤi
Brilliant movie, great storyline (recommend the PD James book too), great effects and the filming is amazing. So many long takes! - Kol Tregaskes
good flick. - Don Martelli via twhirl
This is a great movie. There is a long scene in the middle with no cuts or chops, simply following Owen's character for ages. Very powerful. - ◄ Chris Nixon ►
My 13-month-old son's given name is Theo. Just sayin'. :-) - Ian Wilker via twhirl
I love the idea, and the camera work is brilliant, but for some reason this didn't resonate with me. - Mark Jaquith via twhirl

"There's another huge unplanned market for FriendFeed: parents. Setting up a single page of all your kids' Internet accounts is a snap. Even if they haven't signed up at FriendFeed, you can do it for them. Click the button to create an "imaginary friend." Then, click on a service—say, Flickr—and type in your offspring's Flickr user name. FriendFeed goes to Flickr, gets their photo stream, and inserts the pics into your page." - J450N
I think we, as early adopters, lose sight of the true power and value of FriendFeed to the rest of the world. This article nails it. He glosses over the Friend-of-a-Friend functionality, but it'd probably be good if that was either turned off by default or asked as a question during sign up: "FriendFeed can also tell you what your friends like. Want to find out? (yes|no)" - Mark Trapp
Really? Can you imagine sticking your parents in front of FF? "What's all this stuff? This is too noisy... I can't keep up!" Hell, I feel that way half the time, and I've worked hard to keep my subscriptions down.... - Jason Carreira
Yeah, but you're following random people. What if you were only following family members? Or close friends? We're talking like... 4 or 5 people, maybe a dozen tops. I think that'd be more than manageable for most people, definitely if you turned off FoaF. The activity levels we have are far beyond any normal internet user. - Mark Trapp
I've never really made use of the "imaginary friend" feature, but this article has inspired me to give it more of a go. It's also a great read in that it gives (I guess) a mid-late adopter view of the situation. - David Young

“Blogger sucks at handling comment spam. Why make the blogger delete comment spam messages one by one. Why not build filtering tools that allow me to filter, say, all comments in chinese or by keyword and then let me bulk delete them. I'd think Google would care more than they do.”

Blogspot is one of Google's worst acquisitions. So superseded by wordpress.com - linkman77
I've got thousands of comment spam messages on my blog back from before I began having to moderate my comments. Making me go through them one by one to delete them is lame. Why not let me search for all comments with WOW or powerlevelling or replica watches, etc. and then just mass delete them? Why is no significant development being done to make Blogger a better platform for blogging? - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas. Implement disqus on your Blogger account. Works great. http://disqus.com/ - Dave Hussein Martin
Migrate to wordpress. - Tom Quinn
Dave, not ready to turn my comments over to disqus yet. What happens if discuss is gone in 2 years? I could migrate to Word Press, but I'd rather stick with Blogger. I just don't get why they don't provide better spam comment filtering tools. Obviously it affects a ton of people. And Google should be doing their part to help fight spam in my opinion. They are the best at detecting it in email messages so why not use this technology with blogger comments? - Thomas Hawk
I'd be lucky to get human comments on my blogs but yeah... Blogger does suck at that - Outsanity
Thomas --what happens if Blogger is gone in two years? - Brian Sullivan
Good point Brian, I guess I put more faith in Google being around than disqus though. - Thomas Hawk
Make the switch to Wordpress..after v2.5 it just go better.. - Got80s
Switching to WP is easy. all you need to do is export your posts and import them to WP - Outsanity
@Thomas - What Outsanity said. You'll get TONs of plugins, better Spam protection, get rid of the stupidest comment form on earth and not lose anything much. - Yuvi
I like my blogger. wordpress is hard to use. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Wordpress is a dream to use! Never had any trouble with spam. - Roberto Bonini
Thomas -- just because Google is still around says nothing about WordPress though - Brian Sullivan
I've heard that WordPress doesn't do well at importing blogs with lots of comments. I've got thousands of comments over the years. I'd be worried that not all of them would carry over. Plus I'm really not that good with html and would worry that I'd end up spending 20 hours or something on a project like this and I don't have the time right now. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, I started with Typepad. I grew out of Typepad and imported my Typepad blog into Wordpress.com. Then after a year or so, I installed Wordpress on my own server and again imported everything. Never lost a post or comment. Now I don't have thousands and thousands of comments, but I do have almost a thousand. Wordpress version 2.2 or greater has support for importing from blogger built in. Extremely easy! - Andrew Acomb
I started out on Blogger years ago, and have since moved to Wordpress. It's lightyears better, and much more enjoyable for me personally. - Michael
Switched my comments on Blogger to Disqus. Don't know how big of a difference it makes re. spam, but I like it. Still thinking about WordPress, though. - Mary Anne Davis
Wordpress.org is awesome. I even found a captcha plugin for my contact me page that has worked well. Migrating many of my client sites - their web sites and blogs - to WP. Powerful and flexible! Has worked well for my own biz site as well - Nora Rubinoff via fftogo
yes... me too. I kept my blogger because I like the interface and switched to "disqus" because it rocks. I didn't like the pay part of wordpress. that really turned me off. I have figured out how to customize blogger xml and I'm happy."wordpress" is the "wordperfect" of this generation. every "PRO" likes it better and in the end we were all using "Microsoft Word". Granted the whole word processor generation is over... as is "office", but I can see so many parallels. I see "blogger" as the people's blog. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
