"Most of us have genes that make us as hardy as dandelions: able to take root and survive almost anywhere. A few of us, however, are more like the orchid: fragile and fickle, but capable of blooming spectacularly if given greenhouse care. So holds a provocative new theory of genetics, which asserts that the very genes that give us the most trouble as a species, causing behaviors that are self-destructive and antisocial, also underlie humankind’s phenomenal adaptability and evolutionary success. With a bad environment and poor parenting, orchid children can end up depressed, drug-addicted, or in jail—but with the right environment and good parenting, they can grow up to be society’s most creative, successful, and happy people."

sounds like common sense, but it's amazing how in real life some of these common sense things can get lost in the shuffle

The barbell strategy in "the black swan" is essentially this - a bunch of high risk call options (orchids) bundled with safe treasury bills (dandelions) as being robust to crashes while preserving some upside.

You should reply and say, "Man if only you'd called me a couple of days ago I would have been able to do something with you. Now? Well, sorry, you just missed your chance."

ha ha.. are they looking to give you a job or get you to hire them on behalf of FF.
- Bindu Reddy
Presumably they are offering their services to recruit staff for friendfeed. You're just an entry in a mail merge database, as far as they're concerned.

"That is why on Tuesday, a start-up company led by Adam Bosworth, former head of the Google Health team, plans to become the newest entrant to the online consumer health business. ... The ideal, health experts say, would be to combine personal data with health information to deliver tailored health plans for individuals. That is what Mr. Bosworth and his San Francisco-based company, Keas (pronounced KEE-ahs) Inc., mean to do. Using the Keas system, for example, a person with Type 2 diabetes might receive reminders, advice on diet and exercise, questions and prompts presented on the Web site or delivered by e-mail or text messages — all personalized for the person’s age, gender, weight and other health conditions. Although success is far from certain, Keas has some big partners, including Google Health and Microsoft HealthVault. "

I sincerely hope these guys don't get gobbled up by the big insurance cos. Having worked for a recently acquired division of a big insurance co (<cough>UnitedHealth</cough>) all innovation goes out the door once the company gets bought.

yeah - this is crazy - java already has a poor brand amongst consumers and they're trying to nickel and dime us by installing shovelware along with it. As someone who wants the JVM to be widely distributed this saddens me.
- Robin Barooah
Funny, i just updated Java (update 11), there was no mention of Yahoo Toolbar.
- Majento
Depends how you install it and to what operating system. Either way, it's a REALLY cruddy move. I can see shareware guys doin' this ... but Sun? Whew
- Charlie Anzman
Thanks for quantum leeping from 1998, Yahoo/Sun

In my opinion, the "piggy back" tactic is one of the sleaziest. Borderline malware.

Here's one example (I fetched a Twitter image to be sure it wasn't just an ff problem): $ curl -v 'http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitter...' >/dev/null > GET /twitter_production/profile_images/39546442/x2357_normal.png HTTP/1.1 > User-Agent: curl/7.16.4 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) libcurl/7.16.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3.3 libidn/1.0 > Host:...

"At least four particiants of the Boston Marathon have died of brain cancer in the past 10 years." There are over 20,000 participants every year. I'm sure that 4 is probably less than the expected number of brain cancer deaths in that sized population, which probably means that running marathons actually prevents brain cancer.
- Gabe
With proper training, diet, electrolyte/nutrient replacement and water intake, running a marathon should be safe. However, I can see how improper training can take a severe toll.

It's pretty amazing (and depressing) how timeless the two series are.
- Simon
Ah! One of the most brilliant of Britcoms. Timeless. I own both YM and YPM on DVD and watch all of the episodes every 6 months are so. Though they have a 80's quality in terms of production values, the ideas espoused are classic.

The books have even more humor in the form of editor's notes.
