Why Google will win: entrapment in the iPhone is a failing long-term strategy -
There's no entrapment here. The analogy is completely wrong. The iPhone actually set the standard for connectivity to the Network. This 'silo' argument belongs in a museum. - Cliff Gerrish
Cliff, what do you mean? The iPhone sets a standard but you can't call it open, can you? Apple controls everything, from what apps get into the store to what Mobile carrier I "get to choose". - Alexander van Elsas
Are there people you can't call? Web sites you can't visit? Music you can't listen to? How many apps are in the appstore? How many are added every day? Are their WebApps you can't develop and use? The issue of the telecom cartel is entirely separate-- Apple completely changed the dynamics there. Without their pressure there would be no Google phone. - Cliff Gerrish
Cliff -- there are websites you can't visit -- ones that use Flash would be at the top of the list. There are apps that I can't develop and use -- why are you limiting your argument to "Webapps"? But even there webapps that use Flash are eliminated. - Brian Sullivan
Cliff, Apple dictates the market, the technology and the carriers. Yes, they brought a nice product, but to me it doesn't weigh up to the ability to have choice. - Alexander van Elsas from iPhone
I've ensured I have choice btw, in case you wonder why I use an iPhone. - Alexander van Elsas from iPhone
I have issues even calling people because I'm forced to use AT&T. - Jesse Stay
Why not just unlock the iPhone? There's no denying the iPhone and the App store have advanced the state of the mobile market even if there are a few things to dislike about the pipeline. If they spur Nokia et al to outdo them with Android stuff then consumers win. - Daniel J. Pritchett
As long as the golden cage is shiny enough we'll stay inside. - Todd Hoff
Daniel, the fact that you have to hack it, and constantly fight Apple in doing so does not make the iPhone open either. An unlocked iPhone is not an Apple product. If Apple were to encourage it that would be a different story. - Jesse Stay
I certainly don't expect many people to unlock, and I'd love to see something that was just like the iPhone but fully open. I'm pretty happy with what I've got now though. Maybe if I could get the same thing but pay $20/mo. for the service rather than what I'm paying now... - Daniel J. Pritchett
Flash? Is that really an issue? What is it that you feel that you can't choose? You can certainly choose a phone other than the iPhone. There are a lot of open source computing choices that are unusable. You have choice, but you don't choose it. Open largely means poor user experience. - Cliff Gerrish
I'd love to see Flash on the iPhone... hello to every video service other than YouTube! - Daniel J. Pritchett
I'd love to see video independent of Flash. What exactly is open about that? - Cliff Gerrish
This all assumes we will be using phones in the way we do for long enough for time to level it out. Apple seems to be a catergory leader then move on. - Johnny from iPhone
"Open largely means poor user experience." Uhhh yeah, we call that the web. - Matt Terenzio
Matt, which "open" phone do you recommend? - Cliff Gerrish
Wrong. :) - Louis Gray
Cliff, it has a standard browser it's cool in my book. Though it is a little odd that audio gets redistributed (does it?). They do want to keep you in iTunes. - Matt Terenzio
Louis, no, you're wrong :) - Jesse Stay
The iPhone will "fail" if Apple sticks with AT&T too much longer. - Spencer
Matt, I think you can directly access MP3s in the browser. But the issue is that in the long term, Apple is 5 steps ahead. The rest of the industry, including the beloved "open" phones are struggling to replicate year 1 of the iPhone. - Cliff Gerrish
I had a Sidekick II back in the day that I loved, but it was a closed system. Apps had to come from their store and they didn't have what needed. I switched to a Windows device because I could put whatever I wanted on it. A few years down the line and we're still dealing with the same crap. - Rahsheen
Yeah, the AppStore only has about 91,000 apps with more than 2 Billion downloaded. Pretty tough to find what you need. - Cliff Gerrish
I think the "openness" issue only matters to a small subset of potential users, at least as it pertains to functionality. Do you honestly think that with 85,000 apps on the device already regular users aren't able to do mostly what they want with the phone? Apple will eventually rectify the iPhone's one meaningful liability - AT&T- by launching devices for other networks. It's not a question of if, but when. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
Or what Cliff said. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
Looks like there are about 22,000 active publishers of iPhone apps - a closed, elite group: - Cliff Gerrish
22,000 active publishers is an elite group? How many does WinMo have? - Daniel J. Pritchett
Sorry, I forgot to append the obligatory emoticon ;-) - Cliff Gerrish
Daniel, I believe Cliff was being sarcastic. Time to recalibrate your sarcaso-meter - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
I don't know about others, but in the last several days I'm seeing more comments (less likes, but more comments) than before on FriendFeed. Pretty cool to see the arguments here! - Jesse Stay
No doubt, it's because friendfeed is dead. Or the Walrus is Paul... - Cliff Gerrish
Also, the openness of Android is subject to the whims of the carriers. If you honestly think Verizon will allow any and all apps to be used over their network, let me just refer you to the entirety of their history up this point. Ain't. Gonna. Happen. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
My point is a lot simpler. Apple makes a great product. There is NO reason except commercial why they shouldn't unleash it to all users across all mobile carriers. And they have a dodgy reputation when it comes to approval of apps to their store. Apple should focus on the product only AND let everyone participate, including users that do not want AT&T. No matter how you look at it. They... more... - Alexander van Elsas

Commentary: The sunflower boy's smile - -
Commentary: The sunflower boy's smile -
"On the morning of last year's annual Sunflower Fair in La Porte, Indiana, a family, appearing a little lost, walked up and down a crowded street, looking in vain for the table to sign up their entry. They carried a large sunflower with them. If no one noticed the exhausted, grieving look in the family's eyes, that was understandable. The Sunflower Fair is a place of happy noise: rides and music and food booths. It is La Porte's fall festival, and people from across northwest Indiana come to spend a Saturday in the midst of the milling, chattering crowds. The family silently bearing the large sunflower had never been to the fair before. But this was important." - April Buchheit from Bookmarklet

Hahaha :) Very cruel indeed. Curious to see if this is adopted, corporate users who have IE may still be unable to even install a plugin... but at the very least this still lowers the barrier to HTML5 enabled pages. - James Kuypers
It is not even fork, it is inside piracy... this is provocation ;-) - Thierry Lhôte
Do the people who don't have permissions to install a non-IE browser have permissions to install plugins? - Sean O'Connor
Sean, think of enterprises who have IE6-only legacy internal apps. CF lets them build _new_ internal apps to HTML5, so that someday they can leave IE6. Otherwise they need to dual-target _all_ their apps to IE6 and modern browsers before they can switch. Painful. Also, many enterprises who feel it's too disruptive to move from IE6 may be okay with installing CF, because it's default-off. Let's say half of all enterprises do. Now the need to support IE6 goes down even more. - Daniel Dulitz
Fantastic hack but won't take off. Fix the core issue and get people to upgrade or switch, enough with the band-aids. - Dave Evans
Very cool stuff - Charlie Anzman
Now what about a firefox plugin? Is this open source chromium or chrome... - James Michael Mike DuPont
Dave, the core issue is that enterprises with IE6-only legacy internal apps don't have the resources to run a modern browser. CF fixes the core issue. - Daniel Dulitz
Dave hit my issue dead-on. Installing a plugin is a cheat when the real issue is educating people on why more modern browsers are better. - Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart from iPhone
Cool! - Kol Tregaskes
"education" is typically the worst solution to a technical problem. - Paul Buchheit
yes, education is a slow solution, because most people tend to resist change. better show them there is a better way without forcing them to change anything :) - George Moga
I'd actually love to see the opposite: IE8 running inside Chrome, just like the IE Tab plugin for Firefox. I use Chrome for almost everything, but Outlook webmail looks and works so much better in IE8, and I doubt that Microsoft will be working very hard to fix that. - Tudor Bosman

it may not be something that FF created, but it's something along the lines of what the FF team ought to consider creating -- maybe as a place to test and experiment with engagement before considering features for broader roll out at Facebook. Creating a FF version of Facebook's news feed, complete with hide functionality, thread bumping, etc. would seem like a far more interesting way to interact with Facebook. - Thomas Hawk

"A group of MIT students have launched a low-budget satellite to near space, taking images of the curvature of Earth and the blackness of space. Their approach was to use low tech, off the shelf equipment, which included a Styrofoam beer cooler, a camera from eBay, open source software and an inexpensive helium balloon as the launch vehicle in order to do their complete mission launch for less than $150. Total cost? $148. The experience? Priceless, including getting interviewed on CNN and Fox News about their achievement. The best news for the rest of us? You can't consume health care like you can consume, say, technology. You're not going to die if you don't buy an iPhone at this very moment. But you just might if you have blood in your stool, you've been losing weight and feeling a little tired, but you can't afford the colonscopy right now, and want to wait until the price comes down.
Did you check eBay? - Andy Bakun

The myth of consumerism in healthcare: when your doctor order an MRI do you request a simple flat plate because its cheaper? ;) - WarLord
*shudders remembering when she had to upgrade the memory in the computers connected to the equipment that does colonoscopies* Thanks, Victor (I should have gone to bed an hour ago) - MiniMage
Cristo thats just sensible - percocet is a quality of life issue - WarLord
Do you ever get your script for Percocet, though? (If you do, let me know who your doctor is so I can, uh, consult them.) - Victor Ganata
Chronic heartburn might not kill me, but the esophageal cancer it can cause might. Plus, getting testing done is more like renting. You rarely take the MRI machine home. - Heather
in the middle of my last one, doc says: "Would you like a bit more sedation?" ...MMMKAY... woke up in the car half way home - WarLord
So are you going to skip the colonscopy to save some money and just ask your doctor for a colon resection? Never mind that we have no idea whether or not you really have cancer. - Victor Ganata
WarLord, I'm really hoping you weren't driving! ;-P - Jeff P. Henderson

I'll hold out for less invasive. A dog is, what, $15,000 a year to maintain? - MiniMage
Jeff they tell me it was hardly noticable that I was totally trashed ;) - WarLord
Yikes, well a colonscopy will probably only set you back less than $1k out-of-pocket if you don't have insurance, and it's usually a package deal that includes the drugs and everything ;) - Victor Ganata
If only 50 patients split the pooch's maintenance for a year, there'd be savings for them, and there could STlLL be profit... err, I mean revenue. Just DON'T name him "Frisky." - MiniMage
Of course, a dog wouldn't be able to snare pre-cancerous lesions. At least, I assume they wouldn't be able to. *shudder* - Victor Ganata
Victor - maybe with a smaller dog! - Andrew C (✔)
I knew that was coming. I think I'd rather just part this mortal coil than end up doing a side job at the home of someone who did my colonoscopy. Considering I came pretty close to that kind of situation... I'll tike my chances with the dog. How nonchalant are physicians when it comes to their OWN bodies, anyway? Can they golf and have drinks with their proctologists and gynecologists?[edit: or any HCP's, for that matter] - MiniMage
So are we now all looking forward to the days when colonoscopies can be completely replaced with cancer-sniffing chihuahuas? - Victor Ganata

A bit of free advice from a 40 year Crohnie: "Any problem that you can fix with money is NOT a problem" ;) Good Night be well - WarLord
Now I wouldn't choose the dog over an MRI... - MiniMage
WarLord, unless you don't have any money and/or no insurance, then you have a problem. - Jeff P. Henderson
No Jeff I respectfully beg to differ: while I do understand intimately the issues of money insurance and medicine Some problems especially medical ones if left to fester become unfixable for any sum. - WarLord
About the colonscopy costing $1000 with no insurance, next time you go to the dr ask how much something would cost with no insurance. Then look at how much your insurance is charged. There will be a difference. Insurance companies are charged less for the same procedure/test then an individual with no insurance. But you can get a discount if you pay head of time. Not enough to make it equal, but enough that if you can charge $2k on your Visa it works out better. - Heather
Actually, the way it works is that the health care provider charges the patient and the insurance company (or the government) the same amount, but the health care provider signs a contract with the insurance company/the gov't that stipulates the fractional payment they receive is to be accepted as payment in full. So while the charge on the bill is $1k, very few insurance companies will... more... - Victor Ganata
So what has happened is that prices have become hyperinflated in order to maximize the fractional reimbursements. The person who gets screwed by this is the person without health insurance, since I think technically Medicare makes it illegal to charge the person without insurance less than what you would charge Medicare. - Victor Ganata
Although I realize this isn't actually true (see the CMS HHS uninsured FAQ ) But there definitely is a misconception among many health care providers that you might go to jail for offering discounts to uninsured and underinsured patients while charging Medicare the full price. - Victor Ganata
MN attorney General (Dem) slammed a hospital for charging uninsured patients the retail price while big insurers got wholesale ie discounts for same procedures. I think last I read she was getting reimbursements to patients and a rules change - I'll have check - WarLord
Therein lies the conflict. What an insurance company reimburses a hospital is almost never anywhere near what the hospital charges. What the MN AG wants hospitals to do is charge the uninsured what they get reimbursed rather than what they would normally charge. It's a step in the right direction. - Victor Ganata from iPod

New Blog Post: Conversations on Google Reader Shared Items Are Booming @googlereader
I think this is happening only to A-list bloggers. My own blog sees *way* more comments on Facebook than on Reader or Friendfeed. It annoys me to no end --- not only does Google lose adsense revenue from the Facebook syndication, the conversation is now in 3 places with no chance of re-integration. - Piaw Na
Piaw, I'm more likely an A-list Google Reader sharer than an A-list blogger. :) And that whole argument about AdSense? Ugh. Let it go. Conversations move. - Louis Gray
Even discounting Adsense, losing conversations by splitting them into 3 places is undesireable. Not to mention all of Facebook's comments are immune to searching or discovery through search engines. - Piaw Na
Even though it seems (on the surface) a really really great idea to centralize all conversations into a single place (or every place, for that matter), I have thought about this A LOT from a UI perspective and there are many many cascading issues, not the least of which is the context in which the item was discovered or read greatly lends to the type of conversation or comment the item... more... - Jenna Bilotta
Piaw, this is a natural evolution as communities centralize around people, not content. The best bloggers are the ones who know where the conversations are and take place there. It's absolutely worth the effort. Otherwise, shouldn't I shut this down? This too is a conversation away from the blog. I am happy to see conversations around the content in smaller groups, wherever they are. - Louis Gray
In Google Reader's case, I'd be happy to just have a "subscribe to the conversation" link somewhere. As it is, I have no way of ever seeing if many of the other items I've shared ever have other people adding their comments. But personally, I'm very sick of the walled garden that is Facebook, and I wish there was a way to make people use blogger's comments feature (or set it up so that... more... - Piaw Na
It's not about owning the conversation. It's about conversations being searchable and therefore making the entire conversation more useful. - Piaw Na
If I want to have a conversation about a piece of content with select people, like my friends, I don't want that conversation to be searchable/discoverable, and I don't want it to be part of a larger conversation: I just want to talk to my friends. There's a time and place for public conversations, but there's a value to private ones as well: not everyone cares what strangers think about something. - Mark Trapp
I'm looking at the comments on my blog entries from Facebook. None of them line up with your criteria, Mark. All of them could have just as easily been blog comments publicly accessible and searchable, and at least 50% of them were useful content that would have interested others who stumbled upon that blog entry through a google search. But they're all now behind the walled garden that is Facebook. - Piaw Na
But that's not your call, Piaw: you don't get to decide whether a comment should be public or available to others, the commenter does. Even if you think you should have access to a comment, if they placed in a system that's private, unindexed, or closed, they intended it to be private, unindexed, or closed. This is especially true on Facebook, where the whole system is based on an... more... - Mark Trapp
Of course it's not my call. I just want the default option to be: "Expose it to the public." Most of my friends using facebook weren't thinking: "Oh, I only want to share this with my friends." - Piaw Na
Google Reader transforming into an aggregator. - siva s
This becomes even more interesting now with the news of Facebook purchasing FriendFeed. Although, a lot depends on what Facebook does with FriendFeed... - deceth

One of the most frustrating things as a Googler is not being able to offer info & commentary (due to legal constraints) on so many fascinating issues of the day facing our society!
Especially for those of us who love communicating, enjoy clarifying, and so on... it's like Shave 'n' a Haircut next to Roger Rabbit ( Thankfully, though, I have better self-control than Roger :) - Adam Lasnik
Do other companies limit what their employees can say about politics? Didn't a lot of Googlers work on the Obama campaign? I must be missing something - Robert Felty
Ah, sorry for the confusion, Robert. I'm talking about things like the current debates about Google Books, YouTube, copyright, fair use, competition, etc. Our lawyers at Google rock: they're friendly, open, and approachable. But they're also not stupid, and they have (absolutely understandably) told us not to say anything that relates to pending legal issues involving the company. - Adam Lasnik
And, as you've rightly noted, our freedom of expression in political, religious, and other contexts is not affected; we have many MANY Googlers who are outspoken about controversial issues (speaking on behalf of themselves, not the company. :) - Adam Lasnik
good to know that you have better self-control than Roger Rabbit. I - on the other hand, do not :P - Claudia Petrilli
thank you for the warning ;-) - Adam Lasnik
