Noah I think for Mona being she grew up as a Japanese American it is a bit hard to deal with some of the Japanese culture! We all have prejudices against certain behavior! I can rant about Russia even though I only lived there for 9 years as a young boy! Mona Japanese culture is every where! I would not be surprised if you will see some Maid Cafes in USA!

Diverse conversations with digressive tendencies are indeed great but let's be honest with ourselves. Was that link to the maid cafe video posted on your blog really appropriate for this thread? Honestly, not once did anyone bring up Japan... Maid cafes and Dubai correlate as much as apples and like... gorillas. Yes gorillas, not even oranges.

The number one way I find people to add on FF? Nope, not FFs recommendations, finding little white bubbles next to people making interseting comments in conversations. These are the people that I want more of. Folks that participate intelligently are far more valuable than A listers who don't.

Personally - that's why FriendFeed is differentiating itself from a lot of other sites. It caters to those active people that want to discuss, learn, inform - which makes it a resource that I come back to over and over again...

When I am looking for people that share my interests, I search for a headline I really liked on the everyone tab and check out others who shared it and see what they are all about. It is kind of time consuming but fun.

The goal of adding friends here is to have intersting stuff in your Friendfeed. And you do that by carefully watching the dicussion not just in terms of comments and likes ( as mentioned above multiple times), but what items are posted by people. Thats whats I look for.

This taps into what for me is the stand-out experience FF. 'Common Interest' is _one_ facet, but there's more going on in deciding to Subscribe or not. It's like a first impression in person - the brain takes a bunch of behavioral cues builds a profile in seconds upon which decisions (sometimes lasting) are made. To balance the split decision weakness of not enough information, just cruise through the person's feed for 'background check'. All common sense I suppose.

I think the only way to find those interesting people you don't know is to subscribe to the popular people. I've been finding some interesting folks that way. Otherwise, no one posts comments to your own stuff. Oh, to be unpopular. Sigh.

The criteria of "participate intelligently" is a relative word. What is "intelligent" to you may sound "stupid" to others? I guess the more appropriate term would be "value-adding to the conversation".. But I agree 100% on how "comments" can really uncover hidden gems!

This to me shows what happens when a business forgets who it is...it's core brand, it's primary value proposition to the customer. It becomes harder to do that when Wallstreet wants growth every quarter and you haven't sold investors on your vision. Interesting to see if the downsizing is accompanied by refocusing on their core offerings or whether this is, once again, just a financial move to boost the numbers short term

It is so tempting to add new products because they seem like completely incremental revenue, that is, they don't cannibalize existing products. Starbucks added music, food, coffee makers, stuffed animals. They saw they increased revenue per customer so they kept going. The problem is they eventually became detrimental. They hurt the brand a drip at a time.

I Like Craig; more importantly he fit into the scheme of a crude Bond - Casino Royale being the first movie, I kinda liked that he was more blunt than sly; and he fitted that well. That said; no one looked Bond as much as Brosnan and no one can quite sound Bond like Sir Connery.

It took me two stages to break the soda habit: no sugar, then no caffeine. For that, I went from soda to iced tea, then to unsweetened iced tea, then to juices. I tried to do it cold turkey and went straight to water (really cold, almost ice water was the best), but I wound up getting headaches and irritable.

What got me off of sodas was finding out how artificial sweeteners seriously aggravate Asperger's Syndrome symptoms. I don't want to be fat so going back to regular soda wasn't an option. The mental and emotional changes were astonishing. I still occasionally have a regular Coke from time-to-time (or, preferrably, Blue Sky) but my only real 'soda' intake now is Talking Rain at work or straight club soda (usually blended liberally with vodka and a lime wedge).

Sugar addict: Lots of fruit juices (and I rinse my mouth with water after each glass). My dentist hates it... I had a dental assistant share that athletes have the worst teeth. Nutritionists say eat 7 times/day. Dentists say once.
