The Truth Behind MMS on the Original iPhone | Mac|Life
"The company doesn't state that the original iPhone is incapable of MMS, just that the hardware has changed enough that it won't be getting MMS." IOW, it's not that your gen 1 iPhone can't do MMS, but we're holding that capability hostage so you buy a new phone. - Kevin Pedraja
That's not necessarily true - I don't know how fundamental the differences are between the 1st gen and 3G iphones (in terms of hardware), but they may be disparate enough to warrant Apple not wanting to spend the time implementing a feature for a bunch of handsets that are probably out of warranty and going to be replaced relatively soon. While you may be right, I think it's illogical to automatically assume that Apple is trying to somehow screw owners of the 1st gen iphone :) - Brett Kelly
@Brett - I'd look at it from the original purchaser point: those were two year contracts you had to agree to. One of the selling points was that those phones would be updated when new software came out, at least for the near future. This is one feature that's been requested from the beginning, was turned off at the request of the mobile service provider, and is technologically possible. Even if they're not trying to drive sales, it is still a bit irritating. - Jennifer Dittrich
Also a bit deceptive on Apple's part. During the 3.0 unveiling, someone from Apple said the radio in the 1st gen iPhone couldn't handle MMS. Obviously that's BS. - Kevin Pedraja
Makes you wonder who's doin' the scammin', Apple or A.T.&T.? - Ron Thompson
