How two 'Star Trek' fans are restoring original series shuttlecraft | The Verge
" The set piece for the shuttlecraft that ferried Spock, Scotty, and more than a handful of other crew members to-and-from the USS Enterprise has largely sat unused and in disrepair since the original Star Trek series ended. But two fans of the show want to see life returned to the aging Galileo shuttle set piece, and they've been working with a boat restoration company to see that it's rebuilt to the same standards that a museum would meet when restoring a relic. "It was important to preserve [Galileo] because it is a piece of not just TV history, but our space program's history," restorer Alec Peters told Space.com" - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

'Star Trek' Fan's Dying Wish Granted | TIME.com
"Less than two weeks ago, a user of the social news website Reddit made the kind of last-ditch request the site has become known for supporting: his friend, he wrote, had weeks to live and among his last wishes was the hope that he might be able to see the upcoming movie Star Trek Into Darkness, which is not due in theaters until May 17, 2013. That was probably impossible, he acknowledged, but even the chance to see the extended trailer would be welcome. Reddit and other social-media sites picked up the story. Within days, there was an update. The same user posted news from the wife of the dying man—who has been identified by The Hollywood Reporter as Daniel Craft, director of the New York Asian Film Festival: Craft would get his wish. CNET reports that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams saw the story via Twitter and called Craft’s wife, Paige, arranging for a producer to bring a rough cut of the film to the Crafts’ home in New York." - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

"Anyone who’s ever seen an episode of Star Trek knows that when a crew member is ill, Dr. McCoy is able to use his medical tricorder to scan the patient and diagnose diseases or collect bodily information. Real-life medical scanners have long been a science-fiction standard, but the geniuses at the CSA (The Canadian Space Agency) are on the verge of making it a reality with the Microflow, a gadget that is capable of offering “real-time analysis of everything from infections, to stress, blood cells, cancer markers, and [it] could even be used to test food-quality levels here on Earth.”" - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

BBC News - Star Trek-style 'tricorder' invention offered $10m prize
A $10m (£6.5m) prize is on offer to whoever can create a Star Trek-like medical "tricorder". The Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize has challenged researchers to build a tool capable of capturing "key health metrics and diagnosing a set of 15 diseases". It needs to be light enough for would-be Dr McCoys to carry - a maximum weight of 5lb (2.2kg). The prize was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. According to the official Star Trek technical manual, a tricorder is a portable "sensing, computing and data communications device". The kit captured the imagination of the show's millions of viewers when it was first used in the cult series' first broadcast in 1966. In the show, which was set in the 23rd Century, the crew's doctor was able to use the tricorder to diagnose an illness simply by scanning a person's body. - CarlC, spelling expert from Bookmarklet
The award organisers hope the huge prize may inspire a present-day engineer to figure out the sci-fi gadget's secret, and "make 23rd Century science fiction a 21st Century medical reality". "I'm probably the first guy who's here in Vegas who would be happy to lose $10m," said X Prize Foundation chairman Peter Diamandis. While the tricorder is obviously the stuff of science fiction, other... more... - CarlC, spelling expert

Benedict Cumberbatch Joins J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek 2' in Villain Role | FirstShowing.net
"As exclaimed by Jeremy Kirk: "Yes! We all get to keep saying the name Benedict Cumberbatch!" Indeed we do. Variety, with extra confirmation from Deadline, is reporting that on-the-rise British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has nabbed the villain role in J.J. Abrams' currently untitled Star Trek 2. This kind of throws a wrench in the mix, considering we were all following Edgar Ramirez for Khan, and now Variety says he "landed the role that Edgar Ramirez had auditioned for last month." So who is the villain? Someone new, perhaps? Benedict currently appears on "Sherlock" on BBC right now and he was also in War Horse." - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet
Cumberbatch isn't the only one joining the cast, as Variety also reported that another on-the-rise British actor named Noel Clarke (from "Doctor Who", Heartless, Centurion, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) is set for a role as "a family man with a wife and young daughter." But, they say there's no word on whether Benedict will play a hero or villain, despite Variety saying he's taking... more... - Bluesun 2600
Cumberbatch rose to fame in the UK on shows like "Fortysomething", "To the Ends of the Earth", Stuart: A Life Backwards and now "Sherlock". He's also been in a number of smaller roles im films already, including Starter for 10, Amazing Grace, Atonement, The Other Boleyn Girl, Creation, Four Lions (yep!), The Whistleblower and from this year, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Steven... more... - Bluesun 2600

"Lwaxana Troi returns to the Enterprise, this time as the teacher of an alien race learning to speak. Their native form of communication is telepathy, but they want to learn spoken language in order to interact with other races. Lwaxana comes aboard with Maques and his young daughter, Hedril, who is Lwaxana's star pupil. The crew begins to notice that Lwaxana doesn't seem to be her normal flamboyant self. She's quiet and almost reserved. Deanna tries to figure out what's going on, and even has her mother examined in sick bay. Dr. Crusher determines that the neurotransmitter used for telepathy is sapped — Lwaxana must refrain from telepathy until it can regenerate. Deanna volunteers to help Maques and Hedril, but it's clear that Lwaxana is better for the task. She still uses her telepathy occasionally, and soon falls into a coma. Dr. Crusher cannot figure out what is causing it, as the telepathy-chemical depletion would not cause a coma. Deanna, with Maques' help, decides to go into... more... - Demetrios the Traveller from Bookmarklet

"It's Mother's Day and it got us thinking, Who is Star Trek’s greatest and/or most memorable mom? To us, it’s a no-brainer. That’d have to be Mr. Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, the human teacher who married the Vulcan ambassador Sarek (Mark Lenard) and, not long after, gave birth to everyone’s favorite half-human/half-Vulcan. The character was first played by Jane Wyatt in the TOS episode “Journey to Babel.” Wyatt was a perfect choice for the role, as she’d already been, in a way, America’s mother for years, having portrayed the beloved Margaret Anderson on the classic TV sitcom Father Knows Best. Years later, Leonard Nimoy famously reunited the Vulcan family when he, Lenard and Wyatt appeared in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Wyatt once again imbued Amanda with a sense of warmth and love as she guided Spock toward reclaiming his humanness following his demise and renaissance on the Genesis Planet." - Demetrios the Traveller from Bookmarklet
