One of the toughest conversations I have with many startup founders is about salaries. Founders may come from larger companies that pay them an annual salary and the idea of getting *no* cash for a significant period of time is really hard to wrap one’s mind around.

I know that kind of discussion, kinda "we want to see the founders invest", IMO it's wrong, if the founders are under economical pressure, they won't survive and won't be totally focused in the startup. (BTW the large VC's understand that in many cases)

The view of most of the VCs I've met actually oppose 'no salary' as it distorts the economic viability of the company. "You're building a business--built it for real" is what I would hear. It's fine to bootstrap and live on ramen noodles when you have no funding, but in the end you need to prove the business model will work in the real world, with salaries.
