Bora says that in Green OA the authors retain copyright - isn't it more common that the publisher owns the copyright but tolerates hosting it in repositories - often after an embargo period?

Yes, that _was_ my understanding until last year, JC. Check out this resource from SPARC "Author Rights: Using the SPARC Author Addendum to secure your rights" http://www.arl.org/sparc... However, if the Author Addendum is not used, I would be of the view that the publisher retains copyright.

That is what I was looking for - I guess you absolutely have to have NIH funding to self archive with ACS 12 months after publication
