Wow, you guys get an OS release for each day of the week? Cool!
- jcunwired
Got that too, I am thinking it may not be as much for that as to test to make sure that the Obama text message doesn't crash everything.
- Andrew Fielding
Worried me at first since I have been doing so much complaining about my 3G connection--I thought oh boy, a message from Apple telling me to back off. I should be so lucky.
- Katybeth
are you sure it wasn't a text from Obama about his VP that got scrambled?
- Noah David Simon
I remember being shown this by an EC representative at a funding conference in June. You could tell he didn't quite know what to make of it but his bosses had told him that this was the new promo video, so make sure you use it!
- David Young
Amazon Mp3 Store, didn’t have Blue Sky Mine, nor the track. They only have it covered by a Gangsta Rabbi. No shitting. -- with "no shitting" linking to http://www.amazon.com/Forgott... -- LOL
- Tyler Crowley
Darnell: I might be wrong, but DEMO was set to run first. Then TC50 picked the same dates. If I were running DEMO I would have done anything to have different dates than TC50. The head-to-head competition isn't going to turn out well for them.
- Robert Scoble
that doesn't make much sense to me - DEMO is supposed to move its dates because TC50 couldn't find another time to run its conference? DEMO announced its dates long before TC. I think TC should have switched to a different date once they noticed this, but instead, everybody is stuck in Kindergarten and in the end the companies suffer because nobody can cover that many start-ups in that little time. I don't care about the conferences, but making the companies suffer because of this is stupid.
- Frederic
Frederic: TC50 picked the same dates to attack DEMO. They are taking DEMO's best companies away from it because of this strategic decision to go head-to-head. If I were running DEMO I would have fought back and picked dates a week earlier. That would really have messed with TC50. TechCrunch is forcing entrepreneurs to pick and is winning based on the strength of its blog. It's not kindergarten. This is a direct attack on DEMO and TC50 is winning in the marketplace big time based on my conversations.
- Robert Scoble
I dunno...sounds like Kindergarten to me as well.
- Andru Edwards
Andru: I don't remember millions of dollars of business as well as control of the high tech PR industry happening in Kindergarten, but you might have attended a bit more high-level school than I did. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
I just mean the whole, oh they picked these dates, so we should pick the same dates to attack them, that will get us some PR! And we can make the companies choose! I mean seriously, why try to tear each other down instead of build each other up? That's what I'm all about at least. ;)
- Andru Edwards
BTW - Im sure both events will be fantastic. I just mean the behind-the-scenes garbage.
- Andru Edwards
but TC seems to want dominance, and building up the competition doesn't provide that. it's not *nice*, certainly, but (correct me if i'm wrong, because i really don't know much about these things) i don't think business is a *nice* sport.
- idnan
Andru: it's easy. By making companies choose you position yourself. TC50 is going to be the winner at this game. Idnan is right. Business is akin to war and you've gotta think like that or be squished. Anyone remember Bill Gates? Mona: I'll be at Gnomedex tomorrow evening.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, I'm at Gnomedex, Mona ;) Anyway, I get what you are saying Robert, but it seems so...so Valleywaggish. Business doesn't always have to be war. Like I said, you can tear each other down, or you can build each other up. There can be winners in both business models. Want an example of a businessman who I dont think tears others down? Look up a dude named Robert Scoble.
- Andru Edwards
Andru: being nice has gotten me a long ways in life, but then I don't have the world's tech PR firms wrapped around my finger at the moment like Arrington does. He didn't get that by being nice.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: do you think that a week would have made a difference? Startups would still have had to choose. I think that TC is doing a good job creating a startup-friendly environment (good coaching, no fee for the startups and inviting a lot of VCs). DEMO needs to do more than changing the date, they need to re-invent themselves.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: a week would have made a HUGE difference, yes. First of all, the press and VCs wouldn't have had to choose. Which would have made the entrepreneur's choices much more even. Second of all it would have doubled the PR available. Right now, how many companies are really going to get any oxygen on that week? I'd guess five. From both conferences. If they were a week apart that would have been double.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: good points. you are right. It would have not solved all the demo problems but it would have gotten them a huge boost on the VC and PR side. Question: if you were DEMO, what else would you have done to get a couple of the better start-ups?
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: had a bigger prize. Had a guarantee of funding, or a guarantee of PR (like Walt Mossberg saying he'll write a column about the winner). But DEMO messed up by not understanding the growing power of blogs and social media earlier. They should have gotten on that much earlier and joined in the conversation. Even now I don't see anyone from Demo really making a presence here or on Twitter or on Facebook.
- Robert Scoble
That lack of visibility is why I go with TC50. Since my future is in this community I'm far more likely to support the one with the majority of visibility here.
- Robert Scoble
TC50 seems to be a better event overall. It has the backing of better sponsors and the backing of the best startup blog there is. For these reason I don't think there is anything Demo can do to combat this affront by TC50
- Andrew Fielding
Makes sense. Hopefully someone at DEMO or someone who cares about DEMO is looking at the situation in a more nimble way (or they will when TechCrunch wins that first head to head).
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Robert: you made a good point on situation and DEMO should've listen to you. If this conversation made available in your blog and also covered by tech media, you help TC by reducing the negative opinion echos of TC as Tyrant. :-)
- Pico Seno
As I said, I don´t care which conference reigns supreme in the end - but for the sake of the companies presenting at these events, I think TC should just have picked a date a week or two later (or earlier) - at least most of us bloggers would have had a chance to somewhat keep up with all the new stuff. But why blame DEMO? It was TC that moved in on their date.
- Frederic
I'm surprised at how many people commenting don't get that a) TC50 chose the date as a direct challenge, which they are winning, in order to achieve dominance in that arena, b) Robert is merely suggesting that DEMO could've foiled that easily by moving their dates but instead are losing b/c they took a 'we don't have to move we were scheduled first' attitude, c) this is business, not socialistic benevolence - TC didn't get where they are by being the guys who made everyone else feel okay about themselves...
- Lucretia Pruitt
Look - you *can* get ahead by being nice. Scoble has a definite conflict of interests here in his commentary (as do I, and it'll reflect in my next sentence)... you know who else got ahead by being nice and not going to war with everyone? Pete Cashmore. We're not number one in everything, but I know a lot of folks in our business that might switch places with us if they had the chance.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Competition makes everybody stronger...but it reminds me of high school, when the insecure people would attack other people so they would feel better about themselves...not too be touchy feely, but wouldn't TC have done better for everybody by just being themselves and giving Demo the space to be successful...it is strangely insulting and short term. It should be about creating an environment by which the industry (whatever that is) grows together.
- Jamie Ginsberg
Mark Hopkins: generally i think Pete is a super-nice guy too, and i have other friends who blog at Mashable... HOWever, there are several bloggers out there (not just Arrington) who think Mashable re-hashes other posts w/o linking or attribution... some might call that war. your take?
- dave mcclure
I take it then, from this little tidbit thatn the Seagate logo on Scobleizer will soon be changed to a TechCrunch one? Let's all be honest here... the majority of the companies that come out of any launch even (yes, even DEMO) will have about the same effect as launching the Titanic. Only because TC scheduled on top of DEMO, all the companies will get even less attention. The dumbest thing any start-up can do is launch in this mess this fall.
- Cyndy
Cyndy: it might be dumb to me and you but several really great new companies are coming out at TC50 and several pretty good new companies are coming out at Demo that I've seen. Agree with you, though, if your goals are PR it's going to be hard to break through at either of these shows.
- Robert Scoble
And I'm not paid by TC50 nor do I have any financial consideration for talking about them or being on their panel. Seagate sponsors me and I appreciate that very much because it lets me do a range of things outside of Silicon Valley (we're heading to Seattle tonight and Berlin tomorrow).
- Robert Scoble
@dave: my 'take' is we always attribute. it's our editorial policy (and I should know, as an editor). any time we don't link or attribute to another blog means we received the tip or story from our editorial inbox. that's been the policy since long before I came on board. some may disagree with the methods we used in the past on *how* we attribute, and that method was updated many months ago (we ridded ourselves of the [via] link in favor of in-line linking).
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Cyndy: I think that's well off. There's so many investors and influential individuals at these events that getting a few of them on board or interested is worth their time. A few will get the PR boost too, but that's not always the goal...This week isn't a mess. Hell, the competition is going to shine a bigger spotlight on both conferences, especially TC50, since it will win.
- Ben Parr
@leather: before pete was a rock-star, he was a blogger. :-)
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
@robert: I understand you're not paid by TC, but you're on the judging panel, chosen by Mike, presumably. That doesn't make you particularly impartial in the TC50 v Demo debate.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
scoble - not sure how you can declare TC the winner when neither conference has announced companies yet, much less occurred.. Seems to me the best way to pick a "winner" is to wait for the conferences to actually take place. Attendees and press at both events can make their own determinations
- Carla Thompson
from fftogo
Robert your reasoning makes my head hurt. TC50 picked the same dates "to attack DEMO," so DEMO should have changed their dates? If DEMO had moved their dates up to avoid a conflict, isn't TC50's next logical move to change their dates again to force a conflict? I understand it's business, but there *is* a difference between a fair fight and attempted murder, between healthy competition...

They're really stellar. I ordered boots that had a scuff on them, and so they've sent me a replacement with overnight shipping and a coupon for my next order! Plus, they're having the warehouse check the next boots to make sure they're not scuffed too. Awesome. And this was all over Live Chat!
- Veronica
Zappos is great. I ordered some sandals, wore them for about 2 months and then they started to literally fall apart, the seams just stopped staying together, they let me return them even though they were not in resellable condition and replaced them with a new pair (that i eventually had to return because it didn't fit) Just his week I ordered Ugg Walleys and the first pair was twoo small so they overnighted me the next pair. I love Zappos, it seems I get upgraded expedited shipping everytime.
- Andrew Fielding
I love Zappos service!! They make it so easy to buy and return items that don't fit or that you decide you do not want. Every other on line vendor should take note.
- Jeff P. Henderson
This all sounds great from the customers' point-of-view, but I wonder if it's good for business. Clearly they lost a lot of money on Andrew Fielding.
- Leo Laporte
@Leo, their stuff is kind of expensive - at least full retail price, and considering they don't have to pay retail store rent, they are probably doing OK.
- Laura Norvig
I agree. I just bought a pair of Asics Gel-140 TR for my gym workouts. The sneakers were at my door the next day. Zappos is the main place I go to buy all of my sneakers and shoes.
- AskMac
from twhirl
Leo, they actually have now made money off of me. I've posted about how awesome they are on my blog and have ordered expensive shoes from them as well as signed up for their Credit Card with Chase bank. That one act of customer service has made me a loyal customer for life.
- Andrew Fielding
If their business model was not profitable, I'm sure they would have changed it by now. Seems like treating the customer well is almost always a good business plan.
- Jeff P. Henderson
is mahalo basically just a for profit wikipedia? Why would someone want to create a page there? What would be the motivation?
- Thomas Hawk
What makes this different from WIkipedia? This seems to make it virtually identical - unless the main feature is that you guys have the paid employees to verify research, and of course, the great Mahalo guide articles.
- Andru Edwards
Thomas: great question. a) we pay folks who are working for us if they want, b) there are folks with a vested interest in certain pages (i.e. you might care about Canon 5D page or the Thomas Hawk page), c) some folks like to contribute, d) Mahalo is creative commons, so some folks like to contribute to free content projects like Mahalo/wikipedia because it makes the world better, e) some folks hate to see error and get good feeling fixing them.
- Jason Calacanis
Andru: excellent question. Mahalo is VERY similar to wikipedia except: a) we have human curated search results with the wikipedia style page, b) we don't do 6,000 word articles we do 200-600 word summaries with fast facts, etc. basically we do scanable wikipedia pages which are more efficient, c) we cover non-encyclopedic information, wikipedia does not (i.e. we both have Paris, but only mahalo has Paris Hotels), d) we fact check our information, wikipedia does not.
- Jason Calacanis
Personally I think it might be better if only registered users could edit (with valid email addresses), to help prevent abuse, etc.
- Vincent X
Vincent X: we've had it setup that way for months now. it creates a massive hurdle for people getting involved so we're trying a more open system now.
- Jason Calacanis
Hey Jason, great answers. I someone didn't "get" the fact that you guys just have the quick summary as opposed to the huge pages that Wikipedia has sometimes. So even though both allow anyone to edit, and both can be research tools, there is a significant difference between the two.
- Andru Edwards
Andru Edwards: exactly... our pages are a) better Google/Yahoo result combined with a b) a better wikipedia page. So, we're taking the two best experiences on the planet (google & wikipedia), and putting them on the same page while making each 2x better. I think it's a compelling page to start your research on. Highly recommend going to the homepage an opening up the first couple of pages, then click on a couple of links in the guide note for each page. you'll see its a really cool experience for research.
- Jason Calacanis
If I wanted information from an encyclopedia I would actually get one out or find one. I don't see Mahalo as an encyclopedia. I see it as a search engine to find latest news stories, resources on new and social media and the "internet subculture". I am not a Wikipedia user because I never liked the fact the pages can be edited by anyone and, the incorrect edits aren't always caught in time. Mahalo seems to have a better system than Wikipedia when it comes to checking and ensuring user edits are correct.
- Candace
Jason - Are you worried that this might open up Mahalo to being 'gamed' of a sort? I always liked the fact that Mahalo is people-powered, and helps prevent SEO, or 'gaming' of the system. I'm assuming this is the type of thing that eventually the community continues to fix? They will weed out the bad stuff, and leave the good stuff to filter up?
- Adam Hosp
I made a Thomas Hawk page but it feels confusing. http://www.mahalo.com/Thomas_... I'm not sure I'm doing it right. I don't know how to get my last name capitalized or to add more biographical information, etc.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas Hawk: yes, it is a little confusing, just like making a wikipedia page is. we're trying to make it easier. You've done a great job so far... add some fast facts and a couple of more links and you've got a great start to a page!
- Jason Calacanis
Here's a great place to test the service. The FriendFeed page can use quite a bit of content additions, especially in the Tools area http://www.mahalo.com/FriendF...
- Mark Krynsky
Thomas: changing the name of a page is something only we can do... at least right now. we will fix it. Also, check out the additions i made to your page... i added a quote, your stated life goal, and put a citation on it with the <ref> tag
- Jason Calacanis
Wait - so I can just go in and create an Andru Edwards page on Mahalo, and that is okay? Unlike how that is against Wikipedia rules?
- Andru Edwards
Adam Hosp: i'm not worried at all because Mahalo has 60 full-time fact checkers.... anyone who tries to game the system will get caught really quickly.
- Jason Calacanis
hmm... ok, added a few more links as well. Can I upload a photo of me for my Thomas Hawk page?
- Thomas Hawk
This is the next step in what I've been saying since day 1 - that Mahalo would have to open up more and more to be able to compete - the question is whether people will actually want to do it. Thomas, once you create your page, it will push up very quickly to the top of google for your name - are you sure you are ok with that?
- Allen Stern
Thomas Hawk: we haven't given users the ability to add photos yet... that's coming.
- Jason Calacanis
Andru: just created it. http://www.mahalo.com/Andru_e... so, yes, anyone can create any page (within reason). and yes, you can edit your own page (but we will check it for bias of course).
- Jason Calacanis
Another question to toss out since you noted almost anyone can make their own pages within reason. Obviously this would push them up to practically the top of search engines. Do you think that could actually become a tool for smaller companies to use for SEO and promoting themselves on the web?
- Candace
I am not sure about adding a page but wish you'd clean up the front page a bit; Looks like old style. Consider feedly's look for a way to do the featured stories.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Cool, I'm now Thomas Hawk with a capital "H", thanks Jason. If they can add my profile photo this is the one that I like to use: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Thomas Hawk
LPH: new homepage coming... i agree 100%!!!! thanks for feedback.
- Jason Calacanis
Sure, happy to have a page Allen, what's wrong with having it push to the top of Google? Why would someone not want that?
- Thomas Hawk
Candace Holly: actually, our "stub" pages are NOFOLLOW/NOINDEX on Google/Yahoo until they are really built out (i.e. 200-400 original words). So, yes these *might* be good for whitehat SEO for companies, but not in the short term.. only if they become pages of value... which we decide. We thought about that... good you did too! :-)
- Jason Calacanis
Do these payed people only check facts? Or do they actually help mahalo grow up (by adding new articles and more content on existing articles)?
- Marcos Marado
from fftogo
Thanks for the answer.Thinking on my own train of thought here... that could be a pretty good tool. If a small company/person has something relevant to offer and talk about they could easily have a page on Mahalo. This could also cause them to use Mahalo more often knowing it's a bit more "everyone friendly" in terms of user created content.
- Candace
Question for Jason - After this dialog, what's your impression of FriendFeed?
- Charlie Anzman
Hi :-) Small question: Why are the login and sign up button hidden and require JavaScript to be visible?
- Horst Gutmann
Thomas Hawk: I just added your picture it should show up in a few minutes...
- C. K. Sample III
Horst: looking into it. Candace: we would love to have more people and companies participate and build their pages out in Mahalo. So, yes, it is a great idea for folks to do this (provided they are not hated... then that stuff might get put on your page! :-)
- Jason Calacanis
I've just gotta say, the fact that you can create and edit your own page (or the page of your own business) is fantastic. They have people in place to heck for bias, but other than that, you are free to put yourself and your brand(s) on Mahalo? Nice. I know people who tried to correct misinformation on Wikipedia pages about themselves, only to be banned for doing so.
- Andru Edwards
How is putting your hands over your ears censorship?
- Ken Sheppardson
Because Dave isn't putting his hands over his own ears, he's putting them over the ears of everyone who is participating in the conversation. And beside, it's fucking hypocritical to talk about free speech and then hide from Loren by blocking him. He claims he wants to take a stand. Quit running from the person you have a beef with and take a stand. He's just being a coward the way he's acting.
- Tim Finucane
it might be time to tell the story behind what happened at podtech with loren.. re: loren and scoble. shel is acting all innocent but robert went after loren when he did work at podtech and as a result that caused Loren to lose his sponsorship away .shel is roberts partner and has tangled with loren on other occasions...so it was they who went after loren .. maybe it's time to set the record straight on this..
- John Furrier
John Furrier ? the founder of Podtech ? So you know what exactly transpired , why dont you break the ice and set the record straight ?
- Peter Dawson
Getting blocked by Dave Winer is a right of passage on the web. Dave has had some very famous feuds like with Calacanis at Gnomedex or Curry about PodShow. I'm surprised it took him so long to jump in on this one.
- Rob Safuto
take it as a badge of honor.. I know I would
- David Parmet
and just like that John just kicked this little soap opera up to 2.0... man, revenge by puppetry is a bitch!
- Tyler Crowley
Dave Winer is blocking everyone... I just got blocked. hahahahahaha....
- Jason Calacanis
It's good that John is telling the truth. Scoble and Shel got Loren fired... they went after him, and then Loren went after them.
- Jason Calacanis
Thanks for giving the shout out to John, Jason. John Furrier was always good and honest to me.
- loren feldman
In the final analysis, all social media will have been about personal vendettas writ large.
- J T. Ramsay
Isn't it clear why Loren was fired? Wasn't it because of the outrage from the public over his videos the public deemed racist? Had he been at Coke or Microsoft, he would have been fired as well. It continued even most recently with his continued horrible treatment of Julia Allison.
- Mark Lepzig
Remind me not to get on your bad side, Loren. Also, most of the folks commenting on this entry I have not subscribed to yet.. proof that there are different circles of people here on FF.
- Phil G
Yeah, I blocked Whiner a while ago. I don't mind if you disagree with me as long as you respect my opinion. Obvious that Whiner doesn't condone disagreement. So much for embracing diversity...
- John Wright
Mahalo is not the best chiouice for me. I'm starting to get informatio using Google Reader and friendfeed instead. With Popurls to have a wide look on what's going on.
- Kurai (ff)
from twhirl
Friend Feed. What is mahalo and why should I use it? I am serious and not trying to bait anyone.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Timo... what is Mento? Mento.com is a parked ad page with popups and Google returned mentomusic.com. What am I missing?
- Keith - @tsudo
from twhirl
I've never found Mahalo to add anything important, partly cause I trust myself to make decisions and find material and not a human editor, partly cause 95% of the stuff I am interested in doesn't show up there
- Deepak Singh
Thanks pal... we're working really hard to make Mahalo valuable to users. We had over 4m folks enjoy the site last month... we're getting there. it will take like five years to build out, and we're just starting year two. so please understand we're going as fast as we can! :-)
- Jason Calacanis
Hey Steve (and everyone else), I'm glad to hear that you're liking what we're doing at Mahalo. I'd love to hear what specifically you like about Mahalo and if there's anything you'd like to see improved. We're here to help and we love feedback.
