I do own a car and I drive but my wife and I are avid recreational cyclists (in the summer -- in winter it is just too cold).
- Brian Sullivan
I've never learnt to drive. Mainly because it was always too expensive and when I thought I need it (when I started work) I found I was commuting on the trains all the time, so eventually decided I didn't need it. At some point I'd like to learn but I'm not too interested in having a car. Petrol prices and the maintenance of the car still scares me. I have survived so far so good with public transport and my trusted MTB. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I work 5 miles from home, time to start riding bike myself!
- orionstarr
I am a jogger and cyclist, I take the car out just for family businesses like shopping or taking kids to school
- John Mercer
I drive but am lethal behind a wheel and don't own a car now. Last car I owned was a Saab turbo and my partner prayed every time I got in it. I just love speeeed!!!!
- Nicola Quinn
Don't need a car, have Zipcar, live in SF. Skate sometimes. Want electric scooter tho. :)
- Richard ¿digame? Walker
I use bicycle and public transportation as much as I can. its great. I can read in metro and bus and have some good talks with people.
- John Mercer
The stupid thing is, the Government are wanting us all to get out of our cars and onto public transport, yet a couple of weeks ago the railway companies announced a 10% increase in ticket prices and there's news that trains are still late. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
I can drive, but I haven't yet had to buy a car - thank god, that is an expense I don't want just now.
- Stellina
I didn't have a car for about six years. Finally got one last year... it's a necessity for me. My previous job had a commute time of 2 hours on public transit (it's 35 minutes by car). I don't know how long the commute to my new job would be without a car, but probably about 2 hours as well.
- Nine
No car. No drivers license. No argument with wife about who will drive and who can drink alcohol :)
- Baard @ Pixum
Ninth, if my commute was any quicker by car it might be worth it but the train is much quicker (and still probably cheaper). But it would be nice as you're requested to where you can do (e.g. to places near to train stations).
- Kol Tregaskes
I'll be selling my car later this year and may end up as a cyclist/pedestrian/bus rider at wherever I end up.
- Helen Sventitsky
I live in LA, so yeah...I have a car. But when I relocate to SF, I can't wait to ditch it. I love the public transportation in the Bay Area and will Zipcar it if I need to.
- Derrick
I'm an avid cyclist. Me nor my mother own a car. We live in a bike-friendly city, as they all are in The Netherlands. Most Dutch people own a car though.
- Meryn Stol
This is terrible. I have sooooo much data on Google Notebook. This...stinks.
- Eric Geller
Interesting, just read the Google blog post. It should be noted that existing users' data will not be deleted, nor will the google.com/notebook website be taken offline. See here for more: http://googlenotebookblog.blogspot.com/2009....
- Eric Geller
I agree with shutting down Google Notebook. Between EverNote and OneNote...why?
- Melanie Reed
I agree, the way they pushed Google Notebook, they could just let it sit out there.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
They should had killed Google video since they own YouTube anyways
- Outsanity
Not used Notebook, does it have export? Zoho has some great notebook-like functionality if that helps. Hope you don't lose your data folks, I think we all need to consider where we put important info, myself included! (I use evernote / zoho)
- Matt Harwood
I used Notebook alot. I wish they'd keep it. The rest... adios
- Keith - @tsudo
Here's an updated information regarding Google notebook: "Google Notebook closes, though those with existing accounts can continue to save material. New accounts won’t be allowed, however — nor will the service be further developed, and the Google Notebook Extension for browsers will no longer work. [...] it makes more sense to close this when it offers other services that allow for notetaking, such as Google SearchWiki, Google Docs and Google Bookmarks."
- lelapin
nooo - don't close notebook ... it's great for storing small snippets of data
- Peter Theill
I'm far too lazy to consciously construct a persona online...
- Badger Gravling
I think I'm nicer IRL but I think I'm too nice online....
- Anthony Farrior
I'd like to think I'm the same. Maybe a bit less gregarious in real life. *shrug*
- Derrick
Robert: If you're an asshole, then Big Bird's an axe murderer
- Matthew DeVries
absolutely....nothing worse than rudeness from behind the safety of a keyboard that would get you POPPED IN THE GRILL in real life...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I try to maintain multiple, distinct personalities. Let's see... there's online, offline in public, offline with my friends, driving... I've decided to be a jerk when I drive... let's see... oh yeah... dealing with a customer service rep on the phone... where's that list...
- Ken Sheppardson
Not really. I'm with Glen. I think I look much better online :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Philip Tomlinson: Partly, yes. Some of the comments in that thread made me utterly sick to my stomach and if the same conversation was going on in front of me, I would've said the same thing. Learn some social skills.
- Mona Nomura
from IM
I'm not. I am more social online than I am offline. But then again, FF is pretty much my break from the book I've been writing for the past 3 months. I haven't had time to breathe.
- Tamar Weinberg
Mona, that's why I stayed away from those Steve Jobs threads. It's too easy to come off looking like a hater and wish ill on someone who's not doing all that well anyway, when you are just joking. It's too easy on the internet to be misread.
- Helen Sventitsky
Yes. I really am a 300ft high mobot with laser eyeballs
- Mo Kargas
I'm not really a robot. But i think i'm still nice.
- ·[▪_▪]·
It depends on the people I'm around. I'm not talking about bacon with my relatives.
- Rodfather
From a kindness, ethical, etc point of view I certainly try to be the same. However I'm much more apt to jump into a conversation online than I would be in real life.
- Kenton
I'm more willing to talk to people I don't know that well online than I am off, but I'm still pretty much my same snarky self online and off.
- Christian (Simply X)
I am pretty much, except offline, I am the silent type.
- Kamath (नमः)
This is a general statement. Defensive, much?
- Mona Nomura
Oh, good...I was worried this was prompted by my "FLASH: STEVE JOBS MAY HAVE BEEN EATEN BY A BEAR" tweet, but I'm glad to hear it was your fault, Chris.
- Ken Sheppardson
i'm nice online, but a misanthropic asshole in real life, sorry to say.
- Nathan Rein
I feel I'm a little nicer online just because tone can be easily missed when reading a typed response.
- Nurse Katie
Ya - I'm with you on that. I'm always really playful and intonations don't translate to text, so I try to be nicer - doesn't always work LOL
- Mona Nomura
I'm the same person. How did Penny Arcade put it? Normal person + anonymity + audience = total fuckwad. Happens all the time online.
- Stellina
Now that I think about it, I think I'm an asshole online and off.
- Mona Nomura
I always try to be my best, although I have no idea how it translates.
- Michael Fidler
I'm not. I'm smarter, quicker, and friendlier online. Offline I'm a loner and don't speak much at all. I type/write/think faster than I speak, so I'm better at communication online. So I'm MORE me here than I am offline.
- Nine
Well, offline is usually vocal, while online usually text. And English (as opposed to Norwegian in RL). Adding to that constraints of.. what..140 chars and emoticons? I don't think about it, but there's bound to be room for seemingly difference on and off.
- Thomas Bøhm
I'm the same person offline. Just more cursing :)
- Corvida
Pretty sure I am. I think I even show more of who I really am when I'm online, because I can be free with my geekiness. @Jilly, I'm less shy online, too. Conquering my shyness, one social media site at a time. :)
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
No idea, never thought about it but my real life friends on Twitter would be a better judge
- Sally Church
Sally - You hit on a great point at least to me which is how we define friendship.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
I think I sound smarter offline - I can verbalize my ideas better than I can write them. Also, I'm super hyper and talkative, something that doesn't come across online.
- Lis Miller
Sally - you're more fun in person, I think. ;)
- Mona Nomura
...for the most part...just a bit doofier in person though.
- JA Castillo
yeah I'm a dork... I get the impression that the man or woman that is an absolute jerk on line is (or desperately wants to be) a jerk in real life. I would immagine the opposite is also true.
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
In real life I look more like the Mona Lisa than an Alphonse Mucha painting...but I am still a sarcastic bitch.
- April Russo (app103)
I could be the best friend you ever have or your worst nightmare , ive been a bar room bouncer to a guy that volunteers for PC Users Groups with his Dad . I give a lot and expect little in return . ive cried a lot lately
- johnpiercy
I actually think I'm more nice online than in person. That's normal...right?
- Damien Franco
well... i'm actually a little shorter, and a heck of a lot hotter...
- Joshua Schnell
I'm quieter, but the core of me is just me wherever. There's no purposeful facade, it's just easier for me to communicate via text.
- Alix Whitmire
Stellina, I love that equation: Normal person + anonymity + audience = total fuckwad. I don't like the license to be a fuckwad that comes with anonymity so I don't participate in online communities anonymously anymore. I was still nice anonymously MOST of the time, but sometimes I indulged my dark side. It's an icky aspect of human nature.
- Laura Norvig
I know I am! I am still the stupid silly blonde that loves photography and her boyfriend and hates guys that try to pick up girls on the internet or the people who post stupid shit and try to get attention! Annoying!
- Brandy Lea
Is Time the same on an analog vs a digital clock? Time's the same but its expression can vary and yet still confer the same essence. People act socially in different contexts/modes/roles –so there are unavoidable differences – does that make one a different person? But I get what you’re calling out: Openly a Jerk to people online vs Words spoken under breath IRL because the consequences are different, more feared. That does suck. I respect the dignity of people in every mode I can, though at times I stumble
- Micah Wittman
I am the same person. I guess I'm too new to all of this because I don't understand how you can be any diff. online.
- Adriana
I am a smacked ass on any medium, including in person.
- Peter Ghosh
I'm not, and I actually don't believe anybody is as himself/herself online. To the people that you know in real life, maybe, but for the others, never. People tend to be kinder or meaner or smarter(thanks to wikipedia) than they actually are when online. also, this reminded me of an XKCD comic; http://xkcd.com/438/
- Onur Cengiz
I don't think I am the same person, online I feel like I'm too serious but offline I make up for it! :)
- Joe Dawson
Hellz yeah. What you see is what you get.
- Shevonne
I am, perhaps a more outward going than in real thing but I don't think this is a bad thing. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm certainly no different in overall personality. Just feel a little freer to me myself. :-D
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes. I can not be anyone else than what I am.
- Parth Awasthi
No. I'm usually much quieter offline. I doubt you would even notice me in the real world.
- Steven Perez
I think we are all different in different environments. We might have a basic personality, but am sure that we behave different when we're with our loves ones, with the inlaws, with the company president, with complete strangers etc etc.

yea jeez... they could announce the iphone a month in advance and turn it around, yet it takes 2 1/2 months to get headphones? :)
- Shmoe
$79? how does that compare in price to other in ear ones?
- alphaxion
It's not just how the price compares, it's how well the headphones reproduce sound.
- xero
I just bought these.......i'm such a sucker....
- Live4Emma (L4S)
how are they? do they kick azz or are they all hype or somewhere in between?
- Morgan Haley
$79? They better do my damn laundry for that price.
- Stellina
$79 is worth it just for the inline remote for my iPod Touch.
- Wolfman-K
let me clarify...i ordered them on-line and should get them in a few weeks...so buy "bought", i meant i sent apple my money so steve can buy a tank of gas for his benz...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I'll always try things once but this I don't think I'd like.

It actually kind of reminds me of something we cook at our house called spaghetti pie. It's regular cooked spaghetti mixed with egg and parmesan then covered with mozzarella and baked. Cut out a slice and serve it with spaghetti sauce on top. It's great and I just realized we haven't had it in a long, long time. I know what I'll be cooking one day this week.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sure, why not? I have had baked ziti pizza and taco pizza and all that crazy pizza stuff my husband used to bring home, so why not ramen too?
- April Russo (app103)
Hell nah. But I should admit to willingly putting cheese in my ramen soups (cheddar and mozzarella) so I may be a hypocrite here.
- Admiral Anika
Oh yeah, I would put some Sriracha on there and tear that up! mmmm

My current vacuum has been going strong for like 8 years now and works fantastic. Can't justify ditching it for a Dyson, but when it does finally kick the bucket, you know I'm so getting one.

It's better to remake flops and try and get them right, rather than remaking classics and disappointing folks. Michael Caine said: "I prefer to remake flops. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was a remake of a flop, and The Quiet American is a remake of a flop."
- Michael Markman
Any number of movies from MST3K. I'm thinking "Moon Zero Two" though I do think they should keep the kick-ass Tijuana-brass-esque soundtrack :) Nothing like trumpet music in space! ;) (But I agree with Michael Caine--it never makes sense to me that they remake good movies--remake the bad ones into good ones--duh.)
- thepete
Foxy Brown, The Mack or any of the other blaxploitation films. I'd like to see an update. Hm, maybe I should get on that script rewrite myself.

Ghostbusters would be a good candidate - I think it would benefit from a special effects overhaul. The hardest part would be casting, which would be pretty difficult to top.

16Gb 1st Gen Touch here. Got it when they first came out. I not only don't leave the house without it, I rarely leave a room without it.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Touch. After owning one since it came out it has changed what I use to access the internet. I am probably on the Touch 75% of the time and my laptop the other 25%. Game changing for me. But, I am right on the edge of buying the iPhone, not because I need the phone, but because I want more connectivity than I have been able to get with the Touch. I am not surrounded by free WiFi unless I...
- Michael Pardee
thanks for all the input - spouse is getting the touch for Christmas (I soooo hope he hates it hehe) It is always good to get your significant other a gift you personally want :)
- Janet
I like my second-hand, !activated iPhone 2G :). It's a Touch I can stick a SIM card in. If only I had an adapter that would allow it to work with my FM transmitters. It gets annoying, though, when I don't have access to WiFi, or when I have to re-authenticate to the WiFi at work. T-Mo, call me ;)
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
well my touch is doing great...more of a pda though
- Anthony Feint
touch...by far. wi-fi capabilities alone is a good reason, never mind interface.
- Don Martelli
What they said...all of them. The Touch is fun!
- Mike Lewis
IPod Touch is the choice I made a few months ago... Love it.
- Stellina
Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever blogged on a Touch/iPhone and how was the experience?
- Vincent van Wylick
Hah. I installed several blogging apps, but I'm not sure I actually ever used one. The typing experience is still too doggoned frustrating; I barely have patience for using FriendFeed on it. I realize that I have to stop fixating on typing every word perfectly, thanks to the unusual correction scheme. Once that becomes second nature, we'll see. FWIW, I didn't do much blogging on my HTC Mogul, either, and text entry is vastly better on that for me.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Vincent, I have used the Wordpress app on the Touch for some posts on my blog (blindsquirrel.org) but nothing too heavy. I have learned to trust the typing more and have found that to work out pretty well.

Here's the big one: Boomerangs. There's just no way a "regular" boomerang will return to a person throwing with their left hand, it's impossible.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I can relate to most of these annoyances, especially the smearing ink. I remember coming home from school when I was a kid with blue ink stains on the side of my hand.
- Evan Brown
@Jason, well that clearly depends on how you hold the pen/pencil in your hand more than whether you are left or right handed.
- Wizetux
I was forced to learn Right handed writing. Then I broke my right arm twice, and noticed that I was really liking writing with my left hand (nooo! screamed my teacher) and well now I write with my Right. But I am left eye and hand dominate...Grrrr!
- Susan Beebe
@Shey - there are left-handed Boomerangs (it's just a mirror image), and they fly in the opposite circle :)
- Jennifer Dittrich
@Susan My mom did that with my twin brothers! Since they were babies she was always moving stuff from their left hands to their right
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
This is gonna sound really lame, but I have an attraction to left-handed guys. Something about that unusualness really is sweet and endearing to me.
- Derrick
I'm a lefty and damn proud of it. 2 of my 3 children are right handed but there is still hope that my 3rd child will be a lefty and therefore brilliant, like me :P
- Penny
Interesting post, and while I agree with some points, not others. For example I don't believe there's a left handed way of eating, I mean how hard is it to hold a knife if your right hand? (I'm left handed and not even remotely ambidextrous). Same with a computer + mouse...a left handed keyboard? wtf?
- Duncan Riley
I'm a lefty named Wright. Talk about conflicted. I growl at scissors, can't fly in a window seat, and can openers give me the fits. I'm always shocked when someone sees me write and they ask - You're a lefty??! Why yes I am!
- michael sean wright
Damn ink smears. After essay tests I have to use Lava soap.
- Stellina
I got so used to using regular scissors that whenever my teachers would force me to use the lefty ones I'd curse them! (Well, I wanted to, anyway.) Lefty scissors are so backward to this lefty!!
- Oliver Ortega Chua
After looking at the list... I've pretty much learned to live with most of the list. The one I have the most problem with is the playing cards. People always look at me funny when I hold them. Of course, I can't use lefty ones unless I'm playing solitaire. And, oh, now I know why I've never been able to throw a boomerang!! lol

Nope, mine is always on as well. "53% of Americans have taken business calls in the bathroom." It sucks when your in the bathroom, and you have to hear others conversations. Also, I've noticed way to many women who talk while doing their business then leave without ever washing their hands. *shudders* Doesn't the person they are speaking with hear the flushing?
- Sarah Peterman
No. I can switch it to Silent mode, so why turn it off?
- Stellina
Steve, why? Why not just turn it to silent if you don't want to be disturbed?
- Rochelle
Not sure why I would. I don't turn off my email account, my twitter account, or my phone at home and the phone at the office. Obviously there are times I don't use answer it, don't look at it. Just can't understand why I would turn it off. I like knowing what I missed when I can't respond.
