"That's fair and you will not find me disagreeing. PS: that's getting out of the realm of this discussion, but I'll simply add it to illustrate my previous point on our dedication to openness: Automattic is amongst the only software provider for iOS to have fully open sourced their iOS app (http://ios.wordpress.org/devel..., as we've done with every single mobile apps we build for WordPress. We did not have to, nor did we have to make those apps work with self-hosted WordPress instead of just WordPress.com, but we chose to and would have likely never done it any other way. :)"

"Automattic: I can't reply to that as an individual coder, but I can say that I wouldn't be an Automattician if there was any other philosophy but one of true openness, and that my colleagues are of the same cloth. :) oEmbed: I agree. The protocol does feel like, pardon the expression, a tech-quickie at times, but the core of it is interesting and why we chose to support it. One step at a time, we (as an industry) will get it right eventually."

"PS: here's another example of Automattic being truly dedicated to openness: "For-Profit Automattic Gives WordPress Trademark To Non-Profit Foundation" http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/..."

"Different concept. Justin was talking about a counterpart feature: embedding tweets in WordPress.com content, which is done via their oEmbed endpoint: https://dev.twitter.com/docs/e... Their embedding of external content is not under our control. We can only lead by example, which other networks will hopefully pick up on (especially when combined with efforts such as yours, for which I just wanted to thank you for since I'm a huge fan and have been for many-a-years). :)"

"Wholeheartedly yes indeed. And we're not. :) Twitter is only one of the network we push to: http://en.support.wordpress.co... Bear in mind, said networks are often walled gardens (to our great dispair), but the spirit in which we do this is for our users to own their data, in the public space as it should be, and only disseminate links back to their online presence to such networks instead of solely publishing there. As far as pulling data in, we can only use what others make available and are working hard at interacting with as many such providers as we can, once again as a mean to empower and incentivize our users to truly be in contro of their information. In the same vein, we also try to open-source as many of the special features we implement on WordPress.com, outside of WordPress.org core, as plugins so that people do not have to come to our hosted solution to benefit from them. We want users on WordPress.com to be with us because it is the best choice for their context, not..."

"Here's an example: https://twitter.com/#!/stephda... On the other hand, it seems Twitter has chosen to only provide previews for posts containing images (we'd have wished for excerpts-only as well). Unfortunately, we have no control on their implementation choices. But they could if they wanted to. :) If it's from us, you can safely assume it's opened. It's an important part of Automattic's creed: http://ma.tt/2011/09/automatti... "I am more motivated by impact than money, and I know that Open Source is one of the most powerful ideas of our generation." This is who we are, and we're not budging. ;)"

"Heh, you scared me for a minute. I thought oEmbed avertising was disabled while I was on vacation last week. :p But no, it's all there indeed, but given the nature of oEmbed (single doc only), it's only being advertised on single entries: blog posts, site pages and attachments. You can find them on this post, for example: http://frontiernews.org/2011/0... <link href="http://public-api.wordpress.com/oembed..." rel="alternate" type="application/json+oembed"> <link href="http://public-api.wordpress.com/oembed..." rel="alternate" type="application/xml+oembed"> (pasted the tags above not sure how much Discus will strip when I submit :) )"

"Hi Dave, On our (Automattic/WordPress.com) end, this feature is fully "opened" and is being powered by oEmbed indeed, which we've made available to the general public a few months ago, before said Twitter embed feature: http://develop.wordpress.com/o... You can find the related meta tags on any WordPress.com hosted blog, advertising both the JSON and XML outputs. While we were at it, we've also made our oEmbed provider API work with some self-hosted WordPress sites, via our wp.me shortener. If a self-hosted blog runs our older stats plugin or neweer http://jetpack.me plugin (which optionally enables the wp.me feature, should the site owner enable it), then we provide oEmbed for them as well, and Twitter will show a preview of the content in the same way they would for WordPress.com hosted sites."

"Although beautiful, that video is an art project, so Nery didn't actually do this on a single breath of air. William Trubridge, on the other hand, just achieved the first hectometer dive at the same location. See http://vimeo.com/18213129 :)"

"The feature is for WordPress.com only at this time, and is 100% opt-in at both the profile and each post/page level. So you can tag everything, or just a little, and only when you wish to. Users can also define the precision level. I, for example, only enter my city, not my exact coordinates or even neighborhood at the moment. So the posts are geotagged at the city level, which is great for my content to be discovered locally, but not precise enough to be a privacy issue. You could also only enter your country, postal code, anything Google will take as an input on Google Maps."

This is putting a lot of trust in the top result of each column's search, but the potential is mind boggling and time will tell how accurate it can get.
