Even after it was in the paper about her ranting with him over Twitter. Guess she gave in after that and just blocked him instead of fighting back.
- Simon Wicks
I don't get Arrington's point. Many journalists/bloggers get free review units all the time, and Leo said he had to return his. *shrugs* Arrington is rapidly becoming the Mark Cuban of the tech world.
- LANjackal
can't stop watching Leo say "fuck you guys..."
- Zee.
I laughed my as of. I mean holy shit man.
- Matt Ruiz
Cristo: Arrington is quite frankly an asshole. I don't get why anyone reads TechCrunch or anything related to the site, I've blacklisted it from my news sources
- LANjackal
@Cristo: I don't doubt that's the case. That's why I deliberately refrain from reading articles by bloggers who behave in that manner or are venomously biased.
- LANjackal
Leo Laporte has always been classy, even way back in the 90's when he was doing his tech radio show. That's why people listen to and respect him. The gillmor gang started out interesting like 5 years ago and quickly devolved into a sour morass of bitter tech journalists talking over each other, fighting, blathering and pontificating. They try to act as wise, old sages dispensing salient...

That's weird, I mean sure Arrington is being an ass - every single pre-launch review you see was a "free Pre" there's no reason anyone would think otherwise, but why suddently turn things off after that? That said, I've never seen that show before.
- Richard Lawler
Oops - accidentally deleted my comment. The jist was GG needs Leo (a professional broadcaster) more than it needs Arrington (a professional writer). That said, it looked a bit staged to me.
- Martin Bryant
Sorry Leo, but you just fed the trolls. Entertainment at its finest.
- Shannon
Are we going to find out a week from now this is like the MTV movie awards ala Eminem and Bruno, that it was all staged?
- Laura Zickus
I think they've already kissed and make up
- Jerome Gotangco
Laura, it definitely wasn't staged. I can tell you that Steve & Tina Gillmor were shocked, and then Steve furious that his show was cut off without his say-so. What bothers me about the whole thing is that the one who didn't do anything (steve) ends up looking like an asshole in the aftermath, inviting the Twit community to a free-for-all at his expense. He's a big boy, can defend himself, but it's undeserved and does a disservice to his work.
- Karoli
His perception was that his integrity of an honest review was questioned since he had a special hi tech unit for 7 day review. When a person is honest and their integrity is questioned it's extremely insulting. Whether the person intended it or not. From what I've seen Leo Laporte is genuine and authentic as well as transparent. Hopefully this gets resolved in the best possible way for both of them.
- James Stratford
I was watching Leo's twitlive.tv stream for hours leading up to this. Unless they palnned it the day before, which seems unlikely, it wasn't staged. Even if I hadn't been watching I would have a hard time thinking it was staged. Leo hasn't ever done a stunt like that before so why would he start now?
- jccalhoun
Leo rules. It was time that someone said it live and public in his shit face. Arrington is an asshole. Leo +1000;
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
Part of it is jealousy on Arrington's part that he was promised a pre-release review product and didn't get it. Whereas Leo did. Jealousy is what this is.
- Diego Barros
If you've "been in the valley since '89" and haven't heard of Leo Laporte until FriendFeed, then you've been under a rock in the valley. He's been very well known in tech circles for at least the last 10 years.
- Chris Luckhardt
We each live under our own little rocks. I'm sure everybody involved in pretty much any field can name three or four or six people in that field who *everybody* MUST have heard of. Who you have or haven't heard of is a pretty lame way to keep score.
- Ken Sheppardson
Astonishing. I have watched Leo for years and have always been impressed with his amiable, good natured demeanor. I'm sad to see him lose composure like this, even if he was "provoked". In the space between stimulus and response we always have choice.
- Sean Oliver
LOL I see someone has come through and sanitized all his comments and deleted himself......again......LOL
- Matthew DeVries
Wow, totally shocking. Leo is nomally so calm, this is really baffling; out of character moment. Leo really lost it there ... Oops! That was majorly ackward

@ryo but it makes no-where near the amount of revenue as the likes of Microsoft and Vodafone. Both of which have solid lines of revenue instead of relying solely on adverts. re: #unfollowfriday Whoa, Leo, do we unfollow you too since U used the "O" name in yr last post? I am a tech who loves and follows your show and websites for years. My boyfriend was on your show. I hope you retract this one quickly as it is not like you. Some of these you will unfollow are your readers and viewers too. I will have a few tech questions to come later. But I had to say that, Hope you don't mind. Still love ya.
- Cher A
Even if you were following me, it would be worth loosing 1 follower to post "CNN declares Ashton Kutcher: The World's Biggest Twit". Finally, we have it from a respected source.
- Jeff Fischbach
I seriously don't understand the indignation of all the tech geeks over this publicity. Who cares? Does it impact your social network, your reach, your audience? How is it a bad thing? Twitter, like FriendFeed, is a tool that can be customized to your own maximum benefit. The whole Kutcher/Oprah mania is only on your radar if you want it to be. It personally doesn't hit my radar except for all the geeks being indignant about it.
- Jeremy Hall

How about adding Fail Whale to the list?

- Morgan Haley
There are already tons of people working on behalf of their companies here. I think the tipping point for me will be when I see Jon Stewart mocking the talking heads about being in a "kerfuffle" over FriendFeed.
- Mitch
Personally, I like it more when experts of a given subject gather around that subject. Be it the LOLCAT talk way :)
- directeur
The tipping point for FF is when CNN and other media outlets use the FF service to expand their own reach; through self-interest they will use FF.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
We (pitchengine) have been enabling brands to engage on Twitter in a more conversational manner. We're considering ways to integrate FF, but quite honestly, it takes a different level of sm understanding and I don't think marketers are there yet.
- Jason Kintzler
What??? You mean Robert Scoble doesn't count as a celebrity????
- Her Lindsay-ness
When I overhear the local weather person directing me to his/her FF page like I've heard with Twitter and Facebook recently.
- Tony, Paradox of FF
Balderdash! Did Google get there via celebrities? Or AOL? Or Facebook? Or WordPress? Or any number of other sites. Just because Twitter brought celebrities to the forefront doesn't mean that every new site must have celebrities to reach critical mass.
- AJ Kohn
The other thing FriendFeed needs is better mobile support - SMS at the very least. Celebrities understand that. I'm not saying I want it, but for them to hit that point, that's what they need.
- Jesse Stay
Lindsay: I am only a celebrity with 18 geeks.
- Robert Scoble
Alex, I hope the new UI is as good as the expectations.

FF definitely isn't as user friendly when compared to twitter. It doesn't have the same "mainstream" appeal, more of a niche appeal.
- David Spinks
What do you mean David that FF isn't user friendly. Is it easier to just shout into the wild (twitter) or have a conversation requiring listening (reading) what others have to say? Or did you mean something else?
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Adding facebook status updates and replys may push them over the edge.

- Rodfather
So what is the purpose of saying this here, Jeremiah?
- Louis Gray
Celebrities? Not sure. At some point even celebrities are going to say ugh I have to have another profile. Utility, discussion and a little fun will push friend feed toward greater adoption. Rapidly liking friend feed more than fb and twitter but that is because it is because it compliments both vs replacing them.
- Patrick Boegel

Wil Wheaton (aka weasley crusher) is on here :)
- Roberto Bonini
Wil Wheaton's Twitter and Flickr are imported here, but he has no comments or Likes. I don't think you can really call that "on here."
- Ken Sheppardson
Maybe I don't want FriendFeed to have a tipping point then. I don't know what celebrities would add to the conversation. I'd rather have all "experts on the sidelines" here, and even better, experts NOT on the sidelines but actually up high in business and government. John McCain, hold your next "town hall meetings" here!
- Meryn Stol
Not that Mccain would. He doesn't understand the internet. But I sure would like to see representation from political parties here.
- Meryn Stol
How significant will text messaging be? Twitter has the 140-character limit because of that, FriendFeed doesn't. Though I hear too many complaints from Twitter users, saying that the FriendFeed interface just isn't as friendly - maybe this will change tomorrow.
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
My theory on this: Most celeb's have been texting for years. They've mastered the160 char format and Twitter is a natural fit for them. FF feels more like a discussion forum and most celeb's aren't used to that format.
- Mike Doeff
"celebrities" are not a monolithic group. It will click for some based in part on their personality and part on the fluidity with which they find it a useful curatorial and communications venue. My judgment will be based on creativity, level of interesting info contributed, and authenticity of conversations with whomever comes. I won't hold their celebrity-ness against them, and it's no free pass either.
- Micah Wittman
Well one measure of "success" for friendfeed is that spamming has started.

First, FF needs to change their recommend list. New members only see tech people.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
LPH: I have an account with only Iranians on it. Friendfeed does not recommend tech people there. The recommended list is based on who you follow and who they follow.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, has this changed recently? I recall signing up and only tech people being available on the recommend list. As time went, and I subscribed to different people, then the tech people recommendations decreased.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Robert, you *what*? You've just been added to a few anti-terror watchlists I think. ;) I bet you gonna tell me next that you can actually read and write Iranian. That would make you really suspect! ;)

when the best of the day post ends up being this one, you know where FriendFeed stands in terms of "mainstream." Best of the day usually is a post about FriendFeed, Twitter, or something other social network anyway...
- Vincent van Wylick
I felt the same thing about Twitter a year ago.
- Jamie
yea I thought the same thing....the trick is making it so twitter can still be popular. Friendfeed will just be the method that I use to access Twitter. Friendfeed needs to be able to post/get info from all of my networks seemlessly, that way I don't have to ever go on Twitter.com
- Jason Stephens
Why do we want Twitter and FF to be popular? I'd rather they stay a bit underground. Celebrity on the Internet doesn't mean the same thing to me. I get a lot more useful info out of non-celebrities.
- Dave Sanders
coming soon; demi uses FF to rescue timmy from well. too bad lassie can't tweet

As a student who does as much of reading on my computer as possible, I can totally appreciate this initiative. However, I have a bunch of friends who absolutely refuse to read anything on their computers, choosing instead to print out hundreds of pages of articles per week. While I haven't used a kindle, I think this might be a case of "too soon! too soon!" for many students. I also wonder what age these students are - the point about students losing their kindles should not be ignored!
- Zach Landes
why a kindle and not some of the other reading devices out there? There are far more open devices that would make more sense. BUT whichever device it is, it needs a better ability to take notes, highlight and share
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle, which "far more open devices" are you talking about?
- Zach Landes
"Far more open devices" need to be replaced as "other e-book readers that wont cause Amazon domination"
- TrafficBug
I think more blogs are going to do that so trafic gets to their actual site. They need that for the ad revenue.
- ChiliMac
from twhirl
I was slightly annoyed that the whitehouse.gov blog does this. They should be publishing full feeds, IMO. Also (note to self), no need to block out the /includes/ directory in robots.txt and they probably want to use the NOODP meta tag. They should plan to add some additional protections on their "Contact Us" page eventually too. Overall, quite a solid launch though.
- Matt Cutts
Matt, I noticed that as well about whitehouse.gov, but they did just launch so maybe they will change it in time. Also it's great how much attention their robot.txt file has been getting. I bet a lot of people are finding out what that is for the first time because of all of this, which is great.
- Scott Beale
I set my blog/feed up years ago and never realized it still was still partial until someone commented. I know reading partials was a pain so I quickly made it full
- Chris Miller
I unsubscribe and forget about the blog if it is a partial
- Ryan
On the tech side--I'm surprised how many Apple oriented blogs publish partial feeds. It seems to be a standard. They're not the only group that seems to do this, but I think in some cases a handful of popular blogs that publish feeds encourages others follow suit, just because.
- Loren Heiny
super annoying and so short sighted. i blogged about this a while back http://ablog.gawley.org/2007... and to be honest 14 months ago I thought we'd have seen the end of partial feeds by now...
- Alex Gawley
ChiliMac - I think you nailed it, unfortunately most bloggers that do it just for the money, have low to crap quality blogs on the whole.
- Robert D. Fraser
But you can introduce ads into RSS now like the nytimes, which I think is icky. I also think it's important for bloggers to subscribe to their own feeds in the various formats (atom, rss 2.0) and using different readers (google reader, Mac Mail, Thunderbird, etc.).
- barce
I made a new list called "Twitter Clone" and will slowly migrate folks to more frequently viewed lists. Check out the new feature here: https://friendfeed.com/setting...
- Louis Gray
Mona, that only is true if I'm active on a ton of other friends' activity. Theoretically, unless my total activity per day increases, you won't see a change, just new people!
- Louis Gray
I actually don't want to sync them. I follow people on FF for different reasons than Twitter.
- mikepk
The only downside is that it also sent 184 subscription requests to private feeds. So that means when those private subscriptions approve the request, it hits the home feed. Then I have to move the new adds to the lists manually. And they can accept at any time.
- Louis Gray
Lost count but maybe I saved myself some future work. I added new ones on a separate list just in case I want to see later what I've got in there :)
- Carlos Lorenzo

- Jesse Stay
as mentioned above, by several people, add these people into their own list, before moving them across to your 'main' lists. Also, running this script / feature needs to be done on a regular basis to keep up with your new followers
- martin english
I added 240 and put them in their own list like Louis until I decide what to do with them
- Sally Church
Just checked that out. Funny thing, is none of those people, save one guy who I thought I was subbed to here, are actually active on FF. Which is why they are either in my Dumpers list or I unsubbed from them.
- Anika
I wouldn't do that. I am not so sure I like the feature.
- rampantheart

Jason there's about 50 different posts around here and Twitter about blocking Scoble, not blocking Scoble, etc... I thought this picture put it all in perspective.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Love the image. It may seem tiresome, but I think many people are soul searching for what all this social media / new media *means*. I think most realize that for it to be sustainable, markets must form that provide real value exchange. Otherwise we're all just f@#ing around, and if that's the case, this show _will_ come to an end in the not too distant future. I don't think anyone wants that.
- mikepk
mikepk Gets it! I called 'social media' a "morass of bacon-wrapped LOLcats" a while ago. Without a reason (aka revenue) what is the point of all of it?
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Revenue isn't the only reason for things in life, Mark. It's but one. Finding friends and learning new things are also reasons behind actions in real life, why not online life?
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think it was a huge learning experience for all involved. First thing I've seen something happening in real-time. On top of that, I was also participating.
- Meryn Stol
So, if I spend eight hours a day in Tina's kitchen, use her utillities and eat stuff in her fridge, it would be okay as long as I am meeting a steady stream of new people trapsing through her front door? At some point she will want some beer money.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark, that would make you one of my cats =) My cats pay me nothing, and I shell out a bit to keep them up. Why? Because they bring me warmth when I'm cold, a listening ear when I rant, laughs when I need them, and undivided attention when I have something that interests them like a toy or treat. They are my original FriendFeed =)
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Josh my comment about revenue is not limited to FriendFeed, but all 'social media.' I assume that the rest of them are supposed to generate revenue as well, thus agreeing with your point of diversification.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Tina 1, 2, even 5 critters is one thing. FriendFeed has hundreds of thousands of house pets. Too many cats and you become the neighborhood 'Crazy Cat Lady.'
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
This is a lot like that photo of the two kids next to a pond, one with a string of fish and the other with a scowl on hos face. It just keeps on giving.
- Mattb4rd
That's just an indicator that the analogy isn't accurate. FF isn't my house, FF is a neighborhood park, a library, a pool hall. Lots of people file through and take advantage of the service. There is a revenue stream that maintains it, though that revenue may or may not come directly from the people using the service.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think the cat statement highlights the value exchange idea. Your pets do provide value to you, so you invest your own resources (money and time) into supporting them for the value they provide. You can only do that if you accept that it's worth it for you to work at a job to make $$ to exchange that for pet time.
- mikepk
Value exchange isn't always direct monetary revenue, *but* these "public" spaces must be paid for in time and money somewhere. If it's not, these public spaces will get shut down and sold to the next strip mall. :)
- mikepk
Point taken, Tina. The park and the library obtain revenue from all citizens via taxes, regardless of usage. Throw them out. I like the pool hall analogy! The hall itself makes revenue from the patrons in various ways. To continue the analogy, my only reason to shoot pool in a pool hall (or anywhere) is to win bets placed on the games. That is a personal revenue stream inside the structure. That is the same as social media: working within the structure to produce a personal revenue stream.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Ah, then your usage of a pool hall is different then say my husband's. He's on a pool team in a league and pays yearly dues to be a member of the organization. He also pays a weekly greens fee to the org to play in a match. The pool hall where they play doesn't get any of this money, but they sponsor the teams and host the matches (including free table time) in *hopes* that the team members will buy food and drinks. And FWIW the library and park analogies still work within the light of a freemium model ;-)
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Also, this is why I think there's the obsession. People say "advertising" or "freemium" but no one has figured out exactly how to make that work reliably. In addition, unless you understand the market incentives for both the service providers and the participants, you set yourself up for danger.
- mikepk
mikepk: Exactly. The obssesion is everyone continuing to try different methods to produce revenue because no one has a reliable model.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
If it was on Twitter than it must be true. Anything on FriendFeed, however is up for debate ;-)

But they try to nail down their theories with facts, and let the facts lead their theories.

People who get this stuff are not easily bamboozled by official misinformation and disinformation. They keep their criticial and skeptical intelligence intact, which is a very far cry from blindly embracing any conspiracy theory that comes down the pike. Most conspiracy theories are disinformation. Many of the best mainstream historians conduct conspiracy research on a regular basis. Historical research is largely the enterprise of cutting through official lies.

I wish people would care as much about things that really matter and affect the world. But hey, let's pretend there isn't a bailout we should be bitching about, a economic situation we should be more deeply investigating and a chance for change in our country that we should be rallying for. Caring about the wrong, irrelevant and sometimes silly things is exactly why we lived in a country that is presently a little fucked.

And what forces produced the bailout and the current economic crisis? Is there a conspiratorial dimension to the bailout in particular? Certainly its operations have been shrouded in secrecy. Why? Inquiring minds want to know. Where is this money being allocated? Who benefits? Who are the key players controlling the bailout? What are their affiliations and interests? What does their social network look like?

I now think you are part of the conspiracy to hind the conspiracy!!!!

Certain elements of the military-industrial complex used the Iraq War as an opportunity for war profiteering. Conspiracy theory. :) And: certain elements of the military-industrial complex played a key role in engineering the Iraq War. And Dwight Eisenhower, who first raised alarms about the military-industrial complex, was a "conspiracy theorist."

Wait, what are you hiding? Does that mean everything is not true? <head explodes>

Everything I've stated in this thread is disinformation. :) (Actually, it could be.)
