Excited by new mode for offering library workshops: do 10-minute mini-workshops next to the ref desk. Walk around library to drum up interest, then do 10-minute demo of something timely (today, it's been how to find textbooks and course reserve materials).
Let us know how it goes. Sounds like an interesting experiment.

What a great idea. Mind if I steal it? :)

Sounds like TBWA (training by walking around) -- cool!

Worked really well. We got about 10 students per session and did 4 sessions. 10 minutes seemed like a short enough length that students were willing to make the investment of their time. At start of semester, ref desk is crazy busy with students asking about textbooks. This seemed like a nice way to answer 10 at a time instead of 1 at a time.

Other details: we set up a projector and laptop at the desk, arranged a dozen seats by the desk, and rounded up our attendees. As I presented, a few dropped in. Makes the library look like a happening place when the workshops are underway (a beehive of activity).

hopefully you'll blog this so it can be further passed around the librarian-o-sphere?!

Thanks for blogging this, Stephen. I've been interested in this ever since I saw a iPhone workshop given at our local Apple Store - really thought the informal "gather-round", quick take-away format might work well for some library instruction. Let us know how the experiment continues...
