""The bureaucracy which had stubbornly refused to open the crown is finally moved in the right direction," Weiner said Friday. "Today's news means that America is one step closer to providing what everyone wants: safe access to the heights of Lady Liberty."" - Shellee via Bookmarklet
Good news. When my daughter was much younger, she climbed every step to the top of the Statue of Liberty. We've been back since, but the crown has been off limits. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo

I like the suggestion that McClellan's books should have been titled "What Didn't Happen." Always important to keep in mind when watching political news, regardless of the source. - Shellee
"Furthermore, my sense, though it’s hard to prove, is that the press is feeling a bit ashamed about the way it piled on General Clark." - j1m
I'm going to pull a Tucker Carlson on that one. The day the press feel ashamed over ANYTHING much less for piling up on General Clark, I'll eat my shoe. - Shellee

"Thompson’s creatively fallow years outnumbered his fertile ones, which can leave you feeling a bit deflated after two hours. But at his best he was braver, funnier and more ruthlessly honest than just about any other magazine writer, and “Gonzo” confirms his place in the great American parade of cranks, renegades and sages — that is, in the best, most disreputable corner of our literary pantheon." - Shellee via Bookmarklet

"What do black holes and entangled particles have in common? Until about a year ago, physicists thought that the two entities existed in completely separate worlds. Then, in 2007, physicist Michael Duff from Imperial College London demonstrated a correlation between the entanglement of three qubits and the entropy of a black hole. In the past year, several studies have demonstrated even more connections." - Kelly Fox via Bookmarklet

Freaking awesome! When was this made? And on a sidenote, did Gibson really have to alter history and add the line to the Declaration, "They can take our lives, but they can't take our freedom!" - Chris Reed
There are some BIG ideas in the intro too. There was another FF thread where someone suggested everyone read the Declaration to celebrate Independence day. This video looked like an even better idea! - Shellee
I still have to convince my Mom that the E-mail she sent me will not mean she will receive money from Microsoft... - Chris Reed
That's okay, I've been trying to convince my mother that there's life beyond the computer, and that she should try to do some job/home hunting.... It would make more sense is she really had half a clue about what she was doing on the computer. hee hee. - Will
Slightly different problem. During a recent job transition, my mother decided to learn all things "computer." Her previous computing had been limited to Quicken and Solitaire. I had to convince her there really was no good reason to watch the Microsoft Access tutorial. - Shellee

disappointed the TX version is not in english. - Ruth Ferguson
yeah, I wasn't terribly excited about the TX design either. KS might be worse with his name spelled out on an ear of corn. Hardly legible in any language! - Shellee

For some reason, perhaps the resonance of a previous life, I *LOVE* the idea of a newsstand. If I thought there was a place for one in the world of Web 2.0, I'd run one. So, I'm always interested to see attempts to make print media adaptable. What do you think...will this be a hit or a miss? - Shellee via Bookmarklet

So many to choose from, but his understated Frankenstein's monster with Tarzan (Jon Lovitz) and Tonto (Kevin Nealon) sketches are what stick out for me. "Fire bad! Arrrr! Fire bad!" - Michael W. May

I wish the NYTimes had thought to give more details on the compromise. I've been known to be pragmatic but there was little here to consider except former supporters are calling it a reversal while the campaign calls it a compromise. What's the difference in what had been proposed and what he now supports? - Shellee
That is a great question, If anyone knows of a comparison chart or something on it, feel free to share. I'd love to read up on it more. - Geoff Schultz
Olbermann, I thought, explained it well the other night. Obama's priority was to ensure that the FISA court had full oversight over the wiretapping, which the bill provides. He's willing to let the immunity go to ensure the executive branch doesn't just have impunity to do as it pleases. While I believe in compromise, I'm not a fan of letting the telecoms off the hook either. There will be an amendment to keep the FISA bill as is, but stripping the telecom immunity. I hope he votes "yes." - Chris Reed
Well I'd like to see the Olbermann talk your referring to. This video from June 19th doesn't seem to say the same thing, is there a more recent one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... - Geoff Schultz
I found reference to Olbermann's change of stance on the FISA bill but none of the sources are speaking well of his change of mind or his rational for the change. Most are saying he just flipped to support Obama. I have admittedly never watched Olbermann but from what I have seen in my searches today he sounds about as credible as Fox News. - Geoff Schultz
So, Obama's argument that immunity doesn't outweigh concerns over national security seems sound enough. Was that *caveat* not part of his original position? Also interesting, strong arguments in the comments on Talking Points re: wrongdoing was that of govt. officials and should be prosecuted there rather than through telecomms. http://snurl.com/2su44 - Shellee

Wow. I'm expecting so much more from our first extra-terrestrial encounter. If this turns out to be true, I'll have to re-think the way I think about aliens. Sad. Just sad. - Shellee
His article is titled "Believe me, It's Torture." Perhaps he'll think more about playing fun games with words now that he has discovered a thing called empathy. - Shellee
I'm having problems following a Twitter user. That's something broken I noticed this morning. - Morton Fox
It really is getting to the point where Twitter is more trouble than it's worth. In the offline world, if you keep going somewhere for service and the door is locked shut with some clock saying they'll be back in two hours, you stop going. The fail whale is that clock. - Chris Reed

Was once looking forward to using Twitter with a group I'll be working with in a couple of weeks. Decided just this morning to stick with a room on FF instead and simply skip the Twitter mess. I'm with Chris. I'm over it. - Shellee

McCain's new ad... Here's where I think it goes wrong... McCain already has a problem with his image in an election where people are looking for change and/or new ideas. Yet the use of droll brown and the whole nostalgia parade makes me expect that by the end of the ad, McCain will exclaim, "Pepperidge Farm remembers." Bad form... - Chris Reed via Bookmarklet

"The industry is already concerned over the fate of federal solar investment tax credits, which are set to expire at the end of the year unless Congress renews them. The moratorium, combined with an end to tax credits, would deal a double blow to an industry that, solar advocates say, has experienced significant growth without major environmental problems." - Shellee via Bookmarklet
