aargh. you are one of several. Getting the same thing RTd 1,000 times is killing my Twitter feed. I was looking to tweak my follows, etc. and it made me mad since I like how I have Twitter set up otherwise. Shouldn't tweet when mad, I know.
- Shellee
That's terrific! It's funny how Hillary still loses states she 'wins' (Texas and Nevada, I'm lookin' at you)
- Kevin Fox
Sure, but I tend to think of that as extreme recklessness on the part of the press. Certainly, in the case of her loss in Texas, there was no reason to report that she 'won'. Not quite sure how that happened.
- j1m
And I think this paradox Kevin mentions hi-lights the strength of Obama's campaign. HRC has been conducting a pretty traditional primary campaign. Obama is running away with it thanks to some new-fangled ideas.
- Shellee
Yes. He's good at winning elections, in a way we haven't seen since at least Reagan.

Music just totally doesnt do it for me on the cardio, I have to have somethign more engaging to distract me, like jingling keys or Bloomberg.
- Geoff Schultz
I need the music to change the dialogue in my head. Much better to want to kick and punch some punks than some profs.

Eric, the point is that NBC could have taken something that turned to horseshit under Russert and gone back to it's roots. Gregory is so used to being rebuffed as a WH Correspondent that the thought of not only asking an *intelligent* followup question AND expecting a valid response just doesn't happen with him.

This is about the upcoming YouTube Symphony Orchestra. I have invited my dad to audition (he's an accomplished French Horn player!) and I am tempted to audition as a pianist (I was once actually pretty decent myself ;-).

Just sent the link to a friend who hasn't been able to give up his tuba habit. A group of people just like him get together for "A Very Tuba Christmas" and play carols on the steps of the Tx capitol every year. It's frightening, really.
- Shellee
Hope your friend's audition tape is less frightening :D
- Adam Lasnik
Looks like you made a certain tuba player's day. I think it's important tuba players have something productive to do and this looks like an interesting project.
- Shellee
Ah, that's awesome! And if your friend gets picked to go to Carnegie Hall, I expect a postcard ;-) (oh, and I'm stealing your delightful quote -- "I think it's important..." for my status message of the moment :P)
- Adam Lasnik
omg. I thought Teeth was hysterical. Great nod to classic horror flicks. The audience cringed but had to look too. Awful in so many ways and brilliant, if that's possible.

What's your score? Better than the average? Amazingly, the elected officials who took this quiz fared worse than the average respondent.

81.8% Not entirely proud of that score, but at least I now know I am over-qualified to hold political office in this country.
- Ryan Kaisoglus
32/33 - missed the last one. Hard to see how anyone could miss half the questions.
- John Craft
84.85% for me. Are you going to reveal your score Kevin? Perhaps we should all apply for positions with the new administration.
- Shellee
"Perhaps we should all apply for positions with the new administration." - That whole "list every blog comment that might be embarrasing" sorta knocks me out ;)
- John Craft
87.88% here. I didn't know enough about the Anti-Federalists or Thomas Jefferson's letters.
- Kevin Fox
84.85% for me, just glad I was above average for once!
- Carl Haynes
I got an 87.88%, too, and I should totally have gotten the last one, but didn't read it carefully enough.
- Ladybug Heather
93.94. Upon rereading, I can't believe I got the last one wrong.
- Robert Christ
93.94%. I had the same reaction, Robert.
- Jon Wiley
32/33, missed #7. That 79% of those who have been elected to public office don't know the answer to #6 is unexpected and frankly, scary.
- Ruchira S. Datta
97% - I missed #7. Interesting mix of civics, history, and a couple outliers in that quiz... And for the record, I semi-guessed on a couple of them.
- Brian Johns
84.85% (missed 5 questions) I'll definitely chalk a few up to being a good test taker, rather than actually KNOWING the answers.
- Alessandra Novak
100% ... though the snippet on #7 is short enough I almost got it wrong, and a few were process of elimination ("wall of separation" isn't literally in the constitution, and obviously isn't in the other wrong answers).

Well, allow me to be the fly in the ointment. Are we all going to trust Obama just because we like him? Doesn't power have the habit of corrupting? Obama didn't exactly speak out against domestic spying did he? He was also down with the bailout, something that most of America seemed to be up in arms about. No, the price of freedom is eternal vigilance and I'm not resting this time around. Anyone who feels like joining me, please do.
- thepete
In fact, democracy requires vigilance. I was reading the conclusion of Tocqueville's Democracy in America today. It was frightening! Complacency puts freedom and the whole endeavor at risk...whomever is at the helm.

For discussion: Two competing values in the U.S., a robust sense of individualism and belief in a shared fate or destiny. Which one is the strongest? Which is most likely to influence your decision-making, sense of accomplishment, or motivation to achieve?
I think there can be a blending of the two values. When you look at the million of volunteers and donors to the past election does that not symbolize a belief that by doing my part, I am helping the greater good?
- R. Ferguson
I think that's a fair proposition. I'm reviewing research on race and politics that's lamenting the lack of evidence of a belief in a shared fate amongst black respondents. This is presented as a challenge for politicians, etc. I think overlooking individualism is a serious flaw of the research model. There does seem to be both present in our current climate. It's exciting!
- Shellee
I think fate and destiny are individual rides but we are all essentially in everything together in a sense. So both, and both :)

"Huffington agreed: "Were it not for the Internet, Obama would not be president. He would not be the democratic nominee." More than that, she continued, "The Internet has killed Karl Rove politics." Swiftboating was not possible in 2008, she said. "The truth kept intruding into peoples' living rooms. The truth is solidly mainstream." By that calculation, she maintains, Obama embodies the new center."

"Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council told CNN that conservatives need to take back control of the GOP if the party is to return to its winning ways. "Moderates never beat conservatives. We've seen that in past elections," he said. Rejecting suggestions that the conservative movement was viewed as being out of touch with the electorate, Perkins says the Republican Party needs to go back to basics. "It's a return to fundamental conservative principles that Ronald Reagan showed work and that people can be attracted to," Perkins said."

this will be the key decision for the GOP. was the election lost because the GOP was too conservative or not conservative enough? i expect lots of hand wringing on this one for the near future. and we'll see the results in the 2010 mid-term strategy the GOP employs.
- MikeAmundsen
Yep, far right is out of touch and the GOP has a real power struggle on its hands. I would also argue that a moderate beat a conservative on Tuesday.
- Shellee
The GOP's platform would not have been any more appealing had the moderates stayed out of it. Obama was the true conservative choice in this election.
- Derek van Vliet
If the current Republican party is run by "moderates" I'd hate to see what farther right Repubs would do with it! They call two wars and an economy six feet under something "moderates" did? Sheesh. It's my belief/hope that the American people rejected fear and they rejected hate (well, except for those Prop 8 supporters who were hopefully just confused). What they need to realize is that conservatives haven't been *conservative* in decades.
- thepete
I think Obama will move towards the center left and pick up moderate repubs.
- Russellreno
I like Mel McB's comment. I wish I could recall the article that I read about how the Republican party has become anti-intellectual and thinks that a winning strategy is to appeal to the "folks" Mel McB mentioned... They alienated many of their own supporters, and that's why they lost.
- Cheryl Jones
I mean, that's a big reason why they lost. Not the only reason, obviously.
