I miss the old days. Back then, if you saw a girl you liked, you just grabbed her and carried her back to the cave. Good times. Good times

See that, even when I go the ignore route I end up with the laughs.
- Joe Pierce
That actually works for some people. It's called "playing hard to get". Generally speaking, humans usually want what they can't have more than what they can easily get. But you need to know when to stop that and let yourself be "caught", or you run the risk of the other person thinking it's futile and moving on to the next "unobtainable" thing.
- April Russo (app103)
Not sure I agree. Playing hard to get seems like ways people cover up their insecurities. I also prefer quality - and if choosing quality makes it seem like I am chasing unobtainable, than so be it. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Playing hard to get is an art, and not something that should always be used. When used most effectively, it's more of a backing off and not smothering someone with too much attention, till they show they want it. It also diminishes the appearance of being needy and clingy, 2 things that a lot of people find to be a complete turn-off.
- April Russo (app103)
While it is sad, I think this is most definitely true.
- Martha
I think April is 100% correct. Courtship is a bit of a dance and the art comes into play between the fine line between playing it cool and leaving a woman feeling like she's being rejected.
- Mark Davidson
from BuddyFeed
Maybe it's the guys I choose to date, but most have a lot of things going on...so essentially they play it cool unintentionally but mind just enough attention. People who analyze courtship and treat is as a game usually end up EFing up or landing the kind of partner who likes games. Worst kind of person to be in a relationship with - I know, I've been there and done that. ;)
- Mona Nomura
This is totally wrong... you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women...
- Johnny Worthington
...then when you get the power, you get the high social status, then you get the women. High-status men are better able to provision offspring.
- Christopher A Carr
Yuck. You people have your priorities all EFd up.
- Mona Nomura
"first you get the sugar, then you get the power" - Homer Simpson
- Andrew Smith
This might explain why when I tell people I'm not interesting in dating right now, I get followed like a lost puppy's new found best friend.
- Christian (Simply X)
Crap. I did the wrong thing by liking this post. I should have ignored it.
- Louis Gray
This post needs to die already! #diediedie Bottomline, if you're the type to play games or think that ignoring is part of the "courting dance" then we'd never date. #jussayin
- Mona Nomura
It IS wrong. But it IS a popular belief. That is the sad part. OK post, go die now.
- Martha

It's just a hype; I think every service got this stuff. Wait a few weeks, maybe month, and nobody remembers. I've seen this in ICQ over a decade ago.
- Uwe Schwarz
Uwe: yeah, I just think it's funny that some people will believe the lamest crap just because it's on the Internet.
- Robert Scoble
I just remember "Wag The Dog": "the war is over, I've seen it on TV". Same story, many people just believe instead of asking.
- Uwe Schwarz
Robert these 13000 people would not know what to do on Friendfeed and leave in less than 5 minutes of signing up.
- Bhavishya Kanjhan
this isn't the first or the last group like it, it's a good indicator of which of your friends are morons.
- Richard Lawler
Eldon: I hope I don't have that many idiots following me. :-)
- Robert Scoble
How about emails like these: "Bill Gates/Nokia/whatever will donate <something>, if this message is sent to 1000000 people". When I get something like this from some friend, I get disappointed on him/her...
- Jemm
there are 100 of these groups each week... everyone ignores them (well everyone important anyway ;))
- Thomas
Funny thing is - facebook is probably worth $3.99. Although I notice the French says $3.99 per month which would be a bit steep.
- Matthew Neale
but wait, i thought hotmail was closing the free service unless 2 million people add group Z ?
- Matt Randles
These groups are as old as Facebook itself. All they do is prove: heavy Facebook users = lemmings. :p
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
There will always be a VIP group of sorts... back when Facebook started it looked like early adaptors were joining over there. Then came Twitter, now Friendfeed. If Friendfeed gets too mainstream (if that's possible) I'm wondering what's next.
- David Bisset (sn)
Why would they do that? They are already getting tons of money from sponsors and advertisers. Duh!
- Shevonne
@David: In the Web 2.0 world, there's bound to be something new and already in the works. I wonder what it is too, but I'd be surprised if it's not currently under construction, or even ready to launch.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I wouldn't call them idiots. If they believe it, they believe it. So if it happens are the non-believers idiots? Hmmm
- Bwana ☠
:/... I doubt it will happen. They get enough money from advertising surely.
- ralphsaunders
This was the funniest quote I've seen microblogged in a while! Of course how many of these people use to (or still do) pay for Classmates or Reunion, so naturally they believe this garbage.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Reminds me of the false rumors a few years ago about AOL, Yahoo, and MS planning to charge for email to eliminate spam. Move on - nothing to see here.
- Mike Doeff
It's already 39,265 members in that certain group…
- Daniel Schildt
One thing to notice in this compared to older rumors is the amount of speed people notice it.
- Daniel Schildt
I might join and post something saying "Suckas!"
- Shevonne
40,000 now. Wow. I kind of enjoy the silly little worries of people.
- Daniel Zarick
wow. morons. Everybody knows that friendfeed's not gonna start charging until 2010!
- Jim in Real Time
These are the same idiots who are worried about being charged per email. I don't think they'd know what to do with friendfeed even if they were invited.
- Mr. Gunn
I wonder how many are over the age 0f 17. How many of voting age are in the group of 13,000.
- Franklin Pettit
I swear that first sentence just made my blood pressure shoot up 20 points. The second sentence rapidly lowered it. I have a few people added who unfortunately take everything forwarded to them as fact. They will never get an invite. This is my hideout from the people who shouldn't be allowed online.
- ilene
Chris, the group is not about pro features. They claim there will be NO free access to FB after Dec 31. Quite a different thing...
- Ray Metzen
And the group has 56,000 members now! Amazing... :(
- Ray Metzen
More than ever… 91,481 members at the moment of writing.
- Daniel Schildt
Hmm... I'm not sure which disappoints me more... People being overly anxious over the idea that Facebook will supposedly be charged for use. (This evidentially isn’t true) Or the knowledge that a number of people I don't care to count are here on FriendFeed discussing those that have joined groups concerning Facebook fees as if they are second class citizens. Take a good look at...

Yay! That's fantastic! I was getting really bored of manually refreshing it every time I tweeted. Especially from my phone. :)

Great news, love the efforts still put in to FF.I use Google Reader to share into FF (PubSubHubBub) then FF to Twitter (now Real-Time). The URL shortener is great (ff.im), and so FF is central to my social lifestream. I don't care what Scoble says, FF is technically better and feature-rich.
- Keith Rowland
P.S. Conversations are still better here than on GReader, and you just can't have one on Twitter.
- Keith Rowland
You didn't break the FF Facebook app while you were at it, did you? It hasn't worked since.
- Tim Tyler
Oh, awesome!!! 12 seconds :) I can finally go back to Twitter (...okay no I can't I've turned into a Friendfeed junkie..) but prior it took hours upon hours for me to see a feed. Dumb I am, I never suspected a problem LMAO.
- H0llywoodWh0re
Paul ?? Twitter updates facebook status and then facebook creates a new feed here on friendfeed. So we have same entries both from twitter and facebook on friendfeed. Could you guys please work on how we can avoid duplicate entries? Thank you. ( If there's already a way to avoid this, pls let me know)
- Murat Can Demir
Cool, thanks, Paul! :-) RT Twitter updates have been missed. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
And just as I say that, I see my tweets are not coming into FF in real-time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol. I just tweeted and it was here before I could get out of Tweetie and launch Safari... It's working :)

Johnny, cool. Just me then. It's still slow. Maybe it's FriendFeed then?
- Kol Tregaskes
It truncates retweets, even in the middle of a link...
- Raphael, Raphael
seems that there are only 140chars allowed for a tweet (on FF) and the new twitter retweets are being translated on the way through to old RT @name style - thus are too long.

Sigh. Sometimes it is the little touches, like seasonal logos or easter eggs, that mark a site as a living project, and that you really miss when the developers have all moved on to something else.

Allen, Louis is SocialToo-proof. I can't auto-block him - I keep trying.
- Jesse Stay
for the record, I was not talking about Louis, Jesse you should know that Louis is unblockable and/or unbannable. This is part of the geneva conventions.

- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.

Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.

- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!

Isn't copyright law one where you have to show that you're actively defending, lest you lose it? It's a lawyer's dream. You can't be lax about it. Must defend.
- Phil Calvin
The worst part of this is that the trademark filing was only this past April. I am not sure if they will be able to use it against applications built prior to the filing. If they do attack apps like TweetDeck and Tweetie, then it will become obvious that they do not like their developers.
- Rob Diana
According to Leo Laporte Twitter doesn't even own the registered trademark for Twitter. Sounds like Twitter needs to decide *what* their trademark actually is. But yes, they have to defend it once they decide that.
- Jesse Stay
and your trademark doesn't have to be registered to exist - just has to be defended and identify your brand
- Jesse Stay
Am I just imagining things, or as recently as month or so ago weren't Ev, Biz, et al pretty much refusing to use the word "tweet". I always got the impression they were embarrassed by it.
- Ken Sheppardson
Does Twitter even have a General Counsel?
- Jesse Stay
You know, come to think of it, I don't remember even seeing "Tweet" being used until TweetDeck came about. Maybe the Trademark more rightfully belongs to TweetDeck?
- Jesse Stay
But strange trademarks are registered all the time. It would take lots of time and money to go to court and see what a judge would say.
- Pat Hawks
TweetDeck has some money - they could defend it, and seek damages as well
- Jesse Stay
Where's Iain Dodsworth on all this? Does he have any thoughts?
- Pat Hawks
Doesn't have to be a made up word to be a trademark. Just has to be distinctive in that industry, right?
- Pat Hawks
Owens-Corning has trademarked the color pink
- Pat Hawks
Regardless, I don't think Twitter wants to go down this road.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Okay. I'm going to chime in here. For a short while after college, I worked as a private investigator (yes, seriously) at a firm and we investigated trademarks. Pat and Sean are right; it has to be distinctive to that industry. In case you were wondering, my job was to privately seek out registered/filed TMs to see if that was indeed the case.
- Tamar Weinberg
Tamar that's awesome (you being a P.I.) I'm now imagining you in a Detroit Tigers hat. :-) So who has more right to the "Tweet" claim - TweetDeck or Twitter?
- Jesse Stay
Sean that's a different Trademark - that's when used in that manner in a song. Trademark has to be specific to your industry, as Tamar says.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, I'm no lawyer; I simply did research and compiled legal reports. However, TweetDeck existed BEFORE the trademark was filed so chances are Twitter would NOT be able to usurp the name from them.
- Tamar Weinberg
I'm pretty sure TweetDeck was using the term, "Tweet" before anyone else, even Twitter. I think they claim right to it more than anyone.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, yes, I think they probably legally can. If you can show it has existed prior to the trademark filing, the new trademark owner probably will not be able to enforce it. One of the questions I asked when I investigated trademarks was when the product/service was first used. "First use" needs to be shown in the trademark app. The TWEET trademark filing by Twitter does not show a "first use" date, which is interesting.
- Tamar Weinberg
I think Twitter may be able to enforce that nobody uses the word "Tweet" from the time that Twitter filed the trademark app and onward, but it would not be ethical nor would it be legally enforceable, I believe, to force people to get rid of the names they'd been using forever PRIOR to the filing.
- Tamar Weinberg
p.s. if you're curious, the trademark serial number is 77715815. You can also access it here: http://tarr.uspto.gov/tarr.... The link in the TC comments doesn't quite work.
- Tamar Weinberg
Tamar, very interesting - I wonder if TweetDeck could sue Twitter now on basis of prior art
- Jesse Stay
I would argue I started using the term, "Tweet" because of TweetDeck, not Twitter. People have come to use it due to the use of the most popular Twitter client, not Twitter itself. I "Tweet" through TweetDeck. Everywhere else I just "Twitter".
- Jesse Stay
This is all beyond what I ever did -- it's definitely interesting. If Twitter threatens TweetDeck, they (TweetDeck) may have a leg to stand on. To be honest, I'd really need to find out if Twitter could actually *get* a trademark given that the word "Tweet" is so ubiquitous and relates to products that have been on the market prior to the filing. I really have no idea if the US...
- Tamar Weinberg
I don't think TweetDeck just pulled "tweet" out of thin air, did they? TweetDeck came out in July 2008, but the term was already widely used by then.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'd actually encourage any and all companies using the phrase Tweet to file a Notice of Opposition against the trademark.
- Tamar Weinberg
Ken, I wonder who the first to use "Tweet" is. Tamar, agreed - if I had "Tweet" in my name I'd be talking to my lawyer right now. The notice is probably pretty standard and most likely only an hour or two of work you'd pay for.
- Jesse Stay
FWIW, they only filed for the TM. They haven't been granted it yet. Maybe they won't be given the circumstances.
- Tamar Weinberg
It's looking a lot like they won't get it, ironically thanks to trademarks their own developers have applied for:
- Sam Johnston
That is *exactly* why FF will become more mainstream than twitter.. try explaining how to tweet to your parents (who are finally comfortable with email)!

I went back to Twitter, but flirted with Plurk, Identica, and Rejaw, and even tried doing it myself with Laconica but it was Twitter I really loved. Twitter finally broke my heart so I left it for Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed is leaving me for Facebook. No...

- Mark
Didn't you leave a post earlier saying how funny it was that people complain anytime there's a change (referring to the FF buyout)? This sounds like a complaint to me.
- Fleagle
Not complaining - just thinking about the future. I think a little Friendfeed DNA will vastly improve Facebook. And I think Facebook is already the big winner with the general populace. I also think we geeks need a corner somewhere else to hang out in.
- Leo Laporte
And I have no plans to leave Friendfeed. Yet.

@Mollyanna - I disagree. I am irked because the future of FF is completely uncertain. It's more likely that FB will let FF flounder and close it down than it is that FB will invest time and resources in maintaining and enhancing FF. FB has other interests and is splitting up the FF dev team. That does not bode well for FF. I don't begrudge the FF devs for taking the money. I would be...

I wish we could make FriendFeed into JUST an aggregator.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I think a simple switch that let you turn off FoaF completely, and/or only show FoaF for comments, not likes, would go a long way to cleaning things up.
- Ken Sheppardson
Even though there is conversation on FF, we can't have proper threaded conversation and that results in noise.
- Veetrag
I mean the options are there to turn off FoaF once you "Hide" an item, but they're buried.
- Ken Sheppardson
Robert: so, you're not interested in having an open conversation on friendfeed anymore? That surprises me.
- Joel
Ken: you can turn off FOAF: click on hide twice.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I noticed you're not following me but I didn't take it personal. I'm still following you, I learn a lot from you so keep smiling buddy. I still think you're the shit. :)
- Jeunelle Foster
Couldn't agree more~~ Just too much information to handle by a human beings
- Yunkwan Chen
from feedalizr
@Scoble one response on twitter shows that, people like to see what others are replying too. We can't see that on Twitter.
- Veetrag
Robert, you can easily turn FF into just an aggregator. Feed your services in and don't interact. The only thing missing is an account setting to automatically disabnle comments on all of your posts, which can easily be requested in the Feedback room. Or, make your feed private so no one can see items to commeent upoon them.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
from fftogo
Robert - So, how does this insight affect your view of FF now?
- phil baumann
Phil: it makes me want better display options in FriendFeed.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
This real-time group discussion on FriendFeed is totally different from Twitter but I can't help but feel if you spend your time here, you might miss out on the general Twitter feed.
- Ken Seto
Ken: What is the advantage of general twitter feed, if all the twitter feed is anyways directed to FF?
- Veetrag
Robert - what kinds of additional options would you like rolled out?
- phil baumann
Well I'm not seeing anything happening on FriendFeed other than comments in this discussion
- Ken Seto
Phil: it also makes me want real mobile clients.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Robert, do you think to get 'real' feed mobiles have to support flash. because i believe with heavy JS would be unstable on mobile platforms.
- Veetrag
Robert, the way I see it, everyone's definition of "social media" is different. Some people will tolerate a little higher noise in their S/N ratio to glean extra information from open conversations on FF/Twitter. Others may want to eliminate the noise and just focus on a few select feeds. That's the beauty of social media, you can (within limitations of the software you use) determine your own level of interaction.
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Will take a look at PeopleBrowsr, thanks
- Ken Seto
Phil: I want to see a TRUE river of news. No popping up of things that get engagement. I want to see NO comments exposed. I want a REAL best of day (the ones I currently get show me old items. That is a start.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Jack: that is true which is why we need better display options.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Robert - so perhaps an option to for a collapsed view (text only - sort of like a reader) with options to define what comes up in the view. (I guess that would bring us back to some sort of modified social RSS :)
- phil baumann
Phil : We would also need a way in which we can like/unlike comments too. That will help us read only priority content. It can be one way around smaller screens.
- Veetrag
Robert - this somewhat reminds me of Muhammad Saleem's post comparing FriendFeed and SocialThing from March 2008. His goal was an aggregator, not another social network: http://muhammadsaleem.com/2008...
- Hutch Carpenter
But wouldn't using FF as an aggregator just make it more like a social RSS feed service? For my personal social media paradigm I would miss out on the conversation part of FF. Of course your paradigm may be different :O)
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Jack: I would keep that option on FOR ME but tons of others tell me they hate coming here because of the noise. I totally grok that now.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I'll use Twitter and FriendFeed though, both were just great.
- Vince Ong
Understood. I appreciate that Robert. One of the things that initially drew me to FF was the ability to interact with people such as yourself. I would truly hate if we lost that ability, Of course I am sure your noise is a whole heck of a lot louder than mine :O)
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Until FriendFeed makes hide even easier, this will continue to happen. People are generally too lazy to use hide to the fullest. I don't know if it's a design issue or a user issue, but people don't like to use it.
- Bwana ☠
I think it is a design issue. There are too many features stuck under the hide link.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Good point Robert. But where else do you put those links??
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
I've been loudly raising precisely the issues which Robert Scoble mentions in this post for over a year -- with zero feedback from Friendfeed developers. This is why Friendfeed's growth has been flat and will continue to remain flat. (But Friendfeed is still a great platform, even in its imperfect and much too noisy state.)
- Sean McBride
It amazes me that as of August 9, 2009, Friendfeed's developers, who seem to be brilliant in most respects, still have no appreciation of the importance of elementary design features like list view and the separation of unread from read items. The mind boggles. I really don't get it. And they don't seem to be interested in the hottest field in news reading and management: smart news recommender systems.
- Sean McBride
A fact that seems relevant to this thread: I discovered this post in the FFHolic Most Discussed feed in the Featured Sources box on Feedly's My Digest page. I stopped trying to read the chaotic torrent on Friendfeed's home page a long time ago -- a poor investment of one's time and energy. Without Feedly's elegant user interface, I wouldn't have seen this post.
- Sean McBride
I think the second thing i did on FriendFeed was to remove friends-of-friends because of you.
- Sam Pullara
Facebook limits applications to 10 updates to your Facebook wall per day. If you're still having issues try visiting http://friendfeed.com/connect and/or remove and reinstall the Facebook application.
- Benjamin Golub
Ahh, I think I am running into the "10 updates to wall per day FB restriction". I just joined FF and was testing this functionality out this morning. So removing/re-installing the FB app (which I tried) won't do anything if I have already passed the "the 10 updates per day" restriction? Thanks for the feedback!!
- Kevin Whalen
Benjamin, I might have gone over 10 updates, but is it possible that the last one of the day arrived to FB and a previous one did not? Would it be possible to add a feature to choose which services send to the FB wall and which not to?
- Flavio
So do only FF messages post to the FB wall? Or will messages from other services (ex. Twitter) that post to FF also post to the FB wall?
- Kevin Whalen
All services go to FB (excepted those from FB itself). That is why I would like to choose: FB already imports Flickr, YouTube, Digg and more, so they are duplicated, while entries from FF or services not supported by FB might stay out as over quota.
- Flavio
I didn't see my twitter post on FF show up on my FB wall, but I think that's because I was already over the quota.
- Kevin Whalen
I'm now testing regular Facebook updates (no 10-item limit) coming from Twitter through another application, coming finally from FriendFeed updates sent to Twitter.
- Rodrigo
from IM
Right now, TwitterSync, but there are other ones — just make a search for applications using the keyword "Twitter". :)
- Rodrigo
from IM
@Rodrigo: thanks, but I want my tweets to appear on the wall, not to update the FB status. The original twitter app used to do it but stopped long time ago.
- Flavio
Ben - I tried uninstalling the app, but now I can't find the option to reinstall it. Something about not having the right "Pages" whatever that means.
- Patrick Lightbody
Patrick: sometimes Facebook gets into a funny state after you uninstall an app where it thinks you still have it installed. Try visiting http://friendfeed.com/connect.
- Benjamin Golub
Just can't seem to get FF to post to the FB wall.
- Kevin Whalen
The FF tab in FB works great! The wall updates with FF posts are just sporadic.
- Kevin Whalen
I'm only getting 1 update a day to my wall. This kinda defeats the point of friendfeed. I put all my settings to allow posting big items automatically, and I've removed and readded friendfeed, but no luck. This sucks.
- Sean Straus
My tweets go through friend feed to post onto my facebook wall, and it has been working great, until today when it just stopped. The tweents are on my friend feed but not my fb wall. So i thought it might be the 10 post thing. except i tested it and posted the friend feed, and that DID post to my wall. when i twittered. it appeared on my friend feed but not my fb wall...
- Steven Keevil
This is still a problem. Fairly new to Facebook, added the FF app, got a updates from FF to FB, then they stopped. I have given all permissions, etc. I don't believe I'm close to a 10 item limit, I don't see 10 FF updates total for the past week on FB.
- Ken Gidley
I just tried the remove FF app/re-add it - I got at least one update that way, I'll see how long I keep getting updates.
- Ken Gidley
Facebook shut me down...oh my only 10 updates to my wall? My wall has crumbled....:(
- bcultral
And I'm again not seeing any of my FF posts on my Facebook wall. Very frustrating.
- Ken Gidley
Is anyone at FF working on this problem? I've tried removing/re-adding the FF app to facebook several times, it doesn't seem to work anymore at all - I never get anything on my wall from FF now.
- Ken Gidley
Not working again. It seems to work for a few days and then stops updating the wall altogether. Sigh.
- Ken Gidley
Mine gave up the ghost yet again a few weeks ago and stopped posting anything after only posting about 2-3 of more than 10 updates a day. I'm trying the offline access now but have little hope after it never really working over the course of almost a year.

1. Twitter Grader http://twitter.grader.com – Using a detailed 5 piece algorithm http://grader.com/blog... Twitter Grader assigns every users you run through its system a grade from 1-100. Using this tool you can investigate how engaged the people you’re following are and that can help you decide if you want to keep following them.
- Mitchell Tsai
2. Twinfluence http://twinfluence.com – Twinfluence is a scientific approach to measuring the influence of Twitter users. It’s another set of metrics you can use to help you figure out who you want to follow
- Mitchell Tsai
3. Tweetcloud http://tweetcloud.com (The link in the Mashable article is bad) – One of the most important factors when deciding whether you want to follow a Twitter user is what sort of content they tweet about. If someone tweets mostly about topics you don’t care about, they might not be the best person for you to follow. Tweetcloud creates a tag cloud of a person’s tweets to give you a bird’s eye view of the type of things they tweet about.
- Mitchell Tsai
4. Twitter Karma http://dossy.org/twitter/karma – Twitter Karma is a great app that lets you sort through all of your follows and see who’s not following you in return, who you have a mutual follow/follow-back relationship with, and who is following you that you’re not following back.
- Mitchell Tsai
5. Friend or Follow http://friendorfollow.com – Friend or Follow does essentially the same thing as Twitter Karma, helping you figure out who your friends, follows, and fans are on Twitter. The difference is in the presentation, and it might be a little easier to use for those with a large number of follows or followers.
- Mitchell Tsai
6. Qwitter http://useqwitter.com – Once you’ve done your initial cleaning, Qwitter is a nice app that will update you via email whenever someone stops following you. It will even let you know what you tweeted that caused them to stop following you, which could be useful (if you lose five followers every time you tweet about your cat, for example, that might be a hint to stop talking so much about your cat if you want to retain followers).
- Mitchell Tsai
UPDATE: We’ve had some reports that Qwitter hasn’t been as reliable lately as it had been in the past. An alternative service that also notifies you when you lose a follower is Twitterless http://twitterless.com If you really want to keep on top of when your followers jump ship, it might be a good idea to sign up for both services to make sure you have all your bases covered.
- Mitchell Tsai
According to a recent study, 80% of Twitter users have less than 10 total tweets. That might not be a bad thing — some people might join Twitter specifically to follow others and track their updates. But inactive users might also not be the best people for you to follow.
- Mitchell Tsai
7. Nest.Unclutterer http://nest.unclutterer.com – Nest.Unclutterer will automatically block Twitter users who are following more than a certain number of people or who have been inactive for a certain number of days. You can specify those thresholds and white list certain tweeps so that they are exempt from the cleaning.
- Mitchell Tsai
8. Twitoria http://twitoria.com – Twitoria scans through your Twitter account and finds anyone who has been inactive for the past week, two weeks, month, two months, six months, or year.
- Mitchell Tsai
9. TweetSum http://tweetsum.com – TweetSum digests all your new followers, rates them using what they call the DBI (”Douche Bag Index”), a number that supposedly weeds out Twitter users likely to be annoying, and then lets you easily follow them back or categorize them as tweeps you don’t want to follow. You can see a list of recent tweets for each new follower as well, which is helpful.
- Mitchell Tsai
10. Tweepler http://tweepler.com – Tweepler is a new follower management application that lets you make quick, one click decisions about whether to follow people back or drop them into an ignore pile (out of sight, out of mind). In addition to being able to view recent tweets, Tweepler gives helpful stats about new followers, such as average tweets per day.

Today, Google engineers announced a technology called PubSubHubbub that makes RSS/Atom more real-time, and they deployed the technology on FeedBurner. FriendFeed also added support for the technology, so if you have a FeedBurner feed, your updates should show up in FriendFeed within seconds rather than minutes after the feed updates.
To enable it for your FeedBurner feed: go to Feedburner, click on the "Publicize" tab, and then click on "PingShot" and enable the PingShot service. That will enable PubSubHubbub and send your feed to a number of ping services.
- Bret Taylor
Once step closer to being able to build an open distributed twitter like system!
- Edwin Khodabakchian
this has been done already by superfeedr.com - google's behind the game on this one, but def takes it mainstream.
- Scott Magdalein
I don't understand. Updates won't appear on Feedburner in realtime, so what's the point?
- Peter
Peter: most blogging platforms ping Feedburner when you post a new entry, Feedburner pulls down the feed, Feedburner then pings the hub, then the hub notifies FriendFeed :)
- Benjamin Golub
Thanks Benjamin. Alas, my feeds are not that sophisticated.
- Peter
We're still working out kinks so if you have any issues please send me a message!
- Brett Slatkin
You lost me at "Today" I shall now just smile and nod politely
- Steve C
If I understand correctly this essentially turns any site with a feedburner feed into a real time publisher? But to read it in real time you need what?
- BryanSchuetz
Since this is a Google thingie, does it work on Google Reader already?
- Tarmo Aidantausta
FriendFeed can receive the pings *RIGHT NOW*
- Brett Slatkin
guys, how long are we really talking before it should appear here? Seconds or minutes?
- Zee.
The Reader integration is a prototype; more to come soon!
- Brett Slatkin
no way, so Google Reader could technically go real time??
- Zee.
is that SUP's role take up by those rss accelerator? or SUP is losing a chance to propagate in this field?
- huixing
Huixing: we plan to support all widely adopted real-time standards to make FriendFeed better. We are not tied to SUP only.
- Bret Taylor
from iPhone
Brett, why didn't you use the weblogs.com ping protocol? Your comment there about RSS, right up front, really captures the whole philosophy -- right? Let's just reinvent stuff that already works, so... Why? To break everything that already works? It won't happen that way. It'll only make your adoption curve steeper.
- Dave Winer
Is this working for anyone else? Anyone getting near real time publishing to Friendfeed with feedburner?
- Zee.
from iPhone
Would you ping me (dave dot winer at gmail dot com) when I can use RSS with this system. I'll be happy to evaluate it and provide feedback if necessary, and endorse it if it works. Thanks in advance.
- Dave Winer
Alright we've fixed in the spec Dave. Sorry for the mistake. Followed up.
- Brett Slatkin
I had enabled from way before, let's see if the post I'm about to publish works. I'll DM you Zee if it does!
- Jorge Escobar
can someone please let me know if they've managed to get this working?
- Zee.
There's also a WP plugin I wrote that does the same thing. This might be a good option for anyone who's not using feedburner. http://wordpress.org/extend...
- Josh Fraser
Zee, I set this up for my Empoprise-BI blog, wrote a blog post (using Blogger), and six minutes after posting I haven't seen anything in Google Reader or FriendFeed yet. So if you're not getting advertised response, you're not the only one. I'll test again at a later time.
- John E. Bredehoft
cool...just want to be sure it isn't me alone
- Zee.
Update - seven minutes after posting, the post showed up on FriendFeed (both in my feed, and in a group that receives the blog feed). Nothing in Google Reader yet.
- John E. Bredehoft
John: The Reader integration we demo'ed was a prototype; more to come in the future!
- Brett Slatkin
yeah, it seems 7 minutes is about how long its taking me for too (to arrive in friendfeed)
- Zee.
Could you DM me the feed URL? I'll look into the details and figure out the issue. Like I said before, we're still working out a few kinks (the FeedBurner integration is initial support right now). So thanks in advance for your help in making it super fast!
- Brett Slatkin
If you're looking for another implementation of PubSubHubbub, I'd suggest you give a look to our http://superfeedr.com ;) Thanks for your time and feedback!

Heh, what's the idea behind the crazy name? ;)
- Tyson Key
does self hosted wordpress natively ping feedburner?
- Tyler Gillies
Nice to see XMPP more and more used on the web! It's a nice environment, also for cloud computing!
- Egon Willighagen
Nice tech, strange name though. Wonder if Google has a projectname generator, feeds it some foundation words, and then watches it spew out 1,835391 suggestions in 20-sized chunks? Too bad they didn't pick up PubSubBuzz instead, rhymes better. Also, what was EVER WRONG with PubSubHubris? (fresh and full of promise).
- ianf ⌘
This tech has been around for ages. It's getting much needed promotion right now, but it's not new. The name comes from XMPP's pubsub mechanism, with hubbub on the end. The option for PingShot has also been in Feedburner for months.
- Marlin Forbes
I think that unless you have installed the pubsubhubbub plugin for wordpress, that feedburner still polls your content. It pushes your content out to other interested parties using the new mechanism, but it will still poll your feed. Correct?
- Marlin Forbes
When you edit your comments on FriendFeed, those edits are now reflected in real-time in everyone's feeds. No need to refresh the page to see the edited comments.
This should improve the experience for some of the more "colorful" discussions on FriendFeed :) Thanks to Gary and Casey for implementing this change.
- Bret Taylor
actaully I had two browser windows opened ..but the other one did not get refreshed
- Peter Dawson
This is bad...it's kind of addicting to just watch people changing their comments in this thread :)
- Tamara
Oh thank you so much, FF devs. I am horrible at reading what I type sometimes and end up with typos. I correct them anyway, but most never saw unless they refreshed. This is awesome!
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Ok here's a question - what will BackType pick up as my final comment here? if i can continue to edit it? probably just whatever it is when it happens to hit the comment
- Nathan Chase
That's the kind of attention to detail that makes FriendFeed so good - thanks!!!!!!
- Jim Connolly
Thx Micah, but unfortunately I use Chrome. So, no extensions yet. At least not with the stable version.

@Nathan: Unfortunately, we capture every edit of your comment (can look at that as a + or -, but we'll likely address it in the future)
- Christopher Golda
which makes it pretty much like google wave.
- Rohit
Tis true, David. I'm as eager as anyone for Chrome to catch up.
- Micah Wittman
THis is a really neat thing to watch. I saw it happen yesterday in one of my posts.
- Rick Cogley
Indeed, who needs Google Wave now? ;) Great addition. I do hope that comment field changes become versioned (at least optionally) with history of changes. I do like the ability to clarify my wording, but I also like the permanence of immutable comments (like with regular blog commenting, for example).
- Meryn Stol
Please Please Please, can you do the groups listing updates also so you don't have to refresh the screen to see the last time one of the groups was updated?
- Travis Koger
VERY NICE UPDATE! We also need this for deleted comments.
- Alp
Re: BackType - I've noticed that they'll recrawl your comment if you modify it, within a few hours, after some testing. Not sure if it always happens though, but I've seen at least 4 reappear after I've modified them.
- Tyson Key
On Twitter you can drop off of searches and you're royally screwed. On FF you don't have to worry about all the Twitter glitches. The Twitter search glitch has really been the source of MUCH heartbreak, for me and for many others. I loved those Twitter hashtag chats so much. Without them, my life will never be whole again. Too bad Twitter's a free service.

Yahoo may have email solutions better than Gmail (e.g. I like Zimbra), but the advantage of Gmail is that it's an hub to access to all the other Google integrated services
- Roberto
While I agree the features make it definitely the most ideal and functional way, there are issues with security. When employees come and go, Gmail is too universally accessible. A removed employee can easily go and perhaps cause problems with access to such an instant "hub." At Crocs, we have one internal email that has shared control and, for the most part, different passwords with...
