Just remember- this is not a competition, just an exhibition. @Kyle - ever been to Culver, IN? Grew up there before moving to Chicago.
- michael sean wright
Nice: I have been to Culver! You are in Chicago now? I will have to let you know next time I am up your way.
- Kyle Lacy
Not sure about that, but: "Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future and time future contained in time past. If all time is eternally present all time is unredeemable." - Swatch, Always Now, 1997 (and yes my lunch, at 1:42am local, is consisting of a double martini so that actually makes some sense to me)
- David HC Soul
are you saying that time "now" has no meaning? i (obv.) reject this but toast your willingness to acknowledge the wisdom of a dean martin martini. now, for you sir, on to the work of most importance. focus on the permanent.
- michael sean wright
Well, I will grant that the sentiment of French Marshall Lyautey has some merit (he asked his gardener to plant a tree and when the gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years the Marshall was said to have replied, 'In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this afternoon!').... So I am off to plant some trees....
- David HC Soul
you, i like. and will point you to Hermann Hesse before he won the Nobel Prize for 'The Glass Bead Game' in which he wrote in in the idyllic poem "Hours in the Garden" (1936)- 'I hear music and see men of the past and future. I see wise men and poets and scholars and artists harmoniously building the hundred-gated cathedral of the Mind." - (forword to Glass Bead Game by by Hermann Hesse by Theodore Ziolkowski.)
- michael sean wright
Thanks for the pointer - I'll go search it out.
- David HC Soul
I hope so. The thought is consuming much of my waking hours these days.... But I have to be up in 5 hours... so will have to return to the 'nightcrew' tomorrow night. One thing about time is it does seem to age one....

man, most of the ppl who liked this i haven't seen on FF in ages. maybe i'm doing it wrong.
- Joe The Sausage
for most of us we met here, stayed loyal here but the sun set long ago : ( what a rush of a time that was! now we find ourselves over at g+ telling stories of the good ol' days!
- michael sean wright
Meme-inless no more! always been an interesting world with you!
- michael sean wright
oh and... i do have some google+ invites left - email me nicefishfilms at g ma i l dot co m
- michael sean wright
I'm curious now - did google + make you come back to FF? Because that is v interesting.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
yes, we did the podcast when ff was acquired by the book of face.. watched them absorb the real-time elements and i check in from time to time usually through this post as it brings back very fond memories. google + reminds me of the early days of ff - haven't felt that way about any of the social nets that have come since the facedbooked swallow up. heaven knows we've been on them all and they seem so ancient now -- quora anyone? google got it right with +. think it marks the next era for them.
- michael sean wright
Google + right now does remind me of the FF glory days and I am curious to see what happens next.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.
- Mark Krynsky
Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.
- Andrew Trinh
@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)
- Jandy
Mousing over the usernames shows your Google profile info...cool.
- Mark Krynsky
I marked a bus stop near my house. But not TOO near. :)
- Nine
If you haven't yet...go add FriendFeed to your Google Profile...it will then auto-discover and allow you to add a ton of other profiles you have.
- Mark Krynsky
Thanks for the profile tip - I hadn't updated it since I moved here!
- Jandy
Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.
- Mark Krynsky
Canterbury, Melbourne, Victoria added
- Duncan Riley
Current count: 13 US, 11 Europe, 3 Australia, 1 Middle East. Happy to see many others add themselves overnight. Hoping more will continue this.
- Mark Krynsky
I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.
-
@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.
- Mark Krynsky
Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point.
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Except for Bret, there are no FriendFeeders on the penninsula between San Jose and San Francisco. So much for Silicon Valley early adopters.
- Ryan Kuder
Cluelessness alert! I'm not seeing how to add my pushpin!
- Hutch Carpenter
For some reason whenever i use google maps in creation-mode, it defaults to some other maps I've used, not the one I'm trying to access - ah, figured it out. Had to de-activate some other collaborative maps
- anna sauce
Added. What a great way to see who's on FF in Austin, TX!
- Carter ♥ HTML5
Hao, this is awesome! Remember how people were saying in the FF Feedback room, how they'd like services to be linked, but not important the feeds? THIS is the temp. solution. WOW. Are you going to implement a way to filter individually?
- Mona Nomura
It doesn't actually do that, Mona. If your account is in Friendfeed, it goes into your feed. Hao Chen is merely making it easier to get the URLs from FriendFeed.
- Mark Trapp
Looks great. I guess I'll have to look into Social Graph API a bit deeper. It's so much faster than FF API for network data.
- Benedikt Koehler
Oops, I meant UN-LINK services so it'll stop pulling into their feed BUT still enable their friends to link to their respective accounts. Thank you for catching that, Mark.
- Mona Nomura
It should be possible to use the Social Graph API to find services that are not imported into Friendfeed as well as friends' services not on FF. It's a bit tricky because it requires a lot of separate requests. Right now, it's only using the SG API to find your subscriptions across the services you import on FF.
- Hao Chen
Thanks, just don't look at the source code. LOL
- Hao Chen
Hao, this is awesome, this is going to save me so much time! Thanks!
- Shey
Very cool. However, my tiny brain is not grokking " Remove Connections Already Subscribed To". Please to explain.
- Laura Norvig
Laura, it's not very accurate, but it's supposed to remove links to people's accounts on the other networks you already subscribe to. For example, if I already subscribe to Bob on Twitter, it might remove the link to Bob's Twitter page in the big list.
- Hao Chen
very kool Hao....Im finding my fellow FF on other services!
- (jeff)isageek
Hao, this is very cool; I just used it to great success friending last.fm users.
- Pete D
Hao, since I am the lone step child, any idea why it would not work for me. I typed in my ID, nothing happens, no spinning wheel indicating it is thinking. Just looks at my sad face....LOL.
- R. Ferguson
Hoa - This is great. Can you add Blip.fm?
- Russellreno
this is so awesome Hao - great job!!!!!!!! look out for random add notifications from me :)
- Morgan
How does that work?I type in some user name in it,nothing happen...
- Steve Chou
Steve, what browser are you using? Any JavaScript errors?
- Hao Chen
Glad to hear you guys are finding uses for it. @Russell Right now, the list of services it displays is the list of services being imported by people's FF accounts, and since Blip.fm isn't a supported service yet, I can't add that in easily. I'll think about how to use the Social Graph API more effectively to do those things though.
- Hao Chen
This is just excellent, not wholly accurate like you say but brilliant. Now all I need is to add more contacts on FF ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Never seems to work for my own username.
- Andrew Trinh
Thanks, guys. :) Andrew, ah, looks like Social Graph doesn't see your FF subscriptions for some reason. http://socialgraph-resources.g... I'll re-code this using the Friendfeed API to get your subscriptions later.
- Hao Chen
Very cool Hao! I like seeing which less-common services people actually use. My list (and top 25 services) is http://friendfeed.com/e... Does your system count me twice for YouTube because I have 2 YouTubes? (seems like it might, from the Blog counts).
- Mitchell Tsai
It's not working for me either when I input my username.
- Steve Lowe
Ditto steplow. Looks like it should be awesome but sadly it's drawing a blank for my username. :(
- David Young
It's sad that the first comment you received on the blog post was essentially, "I thought you were a hater, but now that you complemented Google, I like you again." The "you either like the things I like or you're against me" mentality, especially when it comes to company loyalty, is really unnerving and you shouldn't feel the need to be apologetic because of that. It's interesting to hear your perspective on Google, whether it's complimentary *or* critical.
- Mark Trapp
I wasn't saying "now that you complemented Google, I like you again." I was more saying "due to your well-founded explanations in this post and the last, I realize that your criticism of Google is logical, rather than emotional."
- Graeme
Graeme, it seems much more reasonable to assume good faith from the start.
- Mark Trapp
Mark, I think it's useful feedback for anyone who writes to hear feedback both from first impressions and from careful consideration, so Graeme's comments are useful. For me, when I started reading this particular essay, it was awesome (the "if everything you do succeeds" part). Then, after carefully reading to the end, I thought it was all awesome.
- Bruce Lewis
I particularly liked: "Cultures that don't laugh at themselves are cults."
- Benjamin Golub
Which of these four reasons is the one behind FriendFeed no longer authenticating via Google account? :)
- Count Caturday
Lines on 'welcome negative feedback' are good.

A smashing success! Thanks to everyone who has participated. This is very cool. If you haven't yet, go ahead and do so. Original post here http://friendfeed.com/e...

Added. Surely I'm not the only FF'er in Africa?
- Neill Adamson
@Neill, that's great. You just got us to the 6th continent. I highly doubt we can hit 7 as there surely can't be someone from Antarctica that FriendFeeds.
- Mark Krynsky
The Antarctica challenge: OK, here's the plan: we need to contact Eli Duke (http://twitter.com/elisfanclub) he's tweeting from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. We have until February (some background I just found: on his 1st stint in the Antarctic he was a dish washer. In 2006 he wrote a functioning RubyOn Rails site, got burned out and tried to give it away on Craig's List...unsuccessfully--it's back online now http://listyourlist.com/ . McMurdo Photo: http://is.gd/8Ltk)
- Micah
I reshared to the Translation room to help boost your international participation.
- Shannon Jiménez
nah, friendfeed isn't a niche play. it's got dozens of users! ;)
- Jeremy Toeman
Alrighty then, I just sent Eli a tweet (http://friendfeed.com/e... ) with a plea. I hope I'm not taken for a crazy. Hmm, I know that could be my first reaction.
- Micah
@Robert: caught up with an old buddy over a cigar, bottle of wine, and a few glasses of quality bourbon. and i have to be up at 6. so i'm having fun. ;) sorry we didn't get to catch up more at the 12seconds/uservoice party!
- Jeremy Toeman
WTF!!! Nobody from India... ??? Am I the only one..:)
- Devakishor
Well I was late to this party. Great idea Mark. I have all of New Zealand to myself!
- Alistair (alpinefolk)

Why is Erhan Erdogan in the middle of the atlantic ocean on the map? Is he in the Bermuda Triangle or something? lol
- Alan Le
@Micah, great job on recruitment. Eli has added himself and we now have all 7 continents filled.
- Mark Krynsky
Erhan probably got moved accidentally. When I got to the page, and was moving the map, I accidently grabbed someone and moved them to the middle of the Atlantic. Thankfully, it was someone who used a special icon, so it was easy to search and put them back.
- Anika
Hmm, apparently I'm just up the road from Haggis.
- Rob H.
I just added myself. Curious - how do you get different placemarks? I like the Google-looking ones that aren't quite raindrops.
- Tamar Weinberg
Just an addendum to Spidra's explanation: To go back and edit, click the pushpin then click the "Edit" button (look waaay to the left on the page). Then you can click the icon to change, and you'll see Save button next to "Edit"
- Micah
Oh cool. Nice job reviving this guys. Hopefully we get another good round of users to add themselves.
- Mark Krynsky
Kind of frustrating to see how much time I spent on this map and then to find out someone had probably saved their changes over mine - hence mine was gone this entire time. Others should also check for this. In any event, thanks, Spidra, for the tip :) My other pet peeve is Google Maps scrolling incessantly out of nowhere. (Hi Jess.)
- Tamar Weinberg
Added myself yesterday. I notice, thought, that you have to flip to page 2 ... Can't we show all the FFers on one map, regardless of the page ?
- Ahsan Ali
This has come up so many times. But Friendfeed has been resisting it for some reason.
- The Fat Oracle
I wouldn't vote for that change... Maybe an addition. I like to like.
- iTad
tad but how would you differentiate btw the 2? im suggesting share because many times i don't want to say i like something to share it with others - in fact i may very well hate it but to get you to see it i have to say like - it was "cutesy" when friendfeed launched but time for them to change it.
- Allen Stern
Matthew - are you saying you like like you that you like the like to which you have shown that you like?
- Allen Stern
Like the idea of having a share link too... one that you could use to share across all filtered list... like when you subscribe... thats would be a neat idea... you could even have it so you choose the list you want to share it with ;o) keep the like..as is, as its on each list seperate. :o) blimey...who am I to give opinions...lol.. been here a week.. but thought it was worth saying... tell me to shut if not lol. :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
rob you may talk as much as you like - just look at scoble, he invades every thread and they haven't kicked him off yet!
- Allen Stern
In some ways when you press like you are sharing because you bubbling up the post, on the other hand when you have liked you can reshare the entry so indirectly you are also liking it but putting it a place i.e a room where others could share and hopefully enjoy/find of relevant interest in the future.
- Jason
Allen..scoble is like that everywhere tho... :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I think we need: Like, Share, Dislike, Run away from, Laugh, Smile, Cry, Get Angry, etc. And it shows up as "Chacha102 ran away from this." "Chacha102 got angry from this." "Chacha102 smiled from this." etc
- Tyler (Chacha)
"In the English language, the word like has a very flexible range of uses. It can be used as a noun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, particle, conjunction, hedge, interjection, and quotative"... it'll do :)
- Johnny
and add a "dislike" or something. Sometimes people post stuff I think is important, but I don't "like" the content (e.g. Mumbai attack, etc)
- Dave Hodson
Gotta be careful of overkill tho eh... :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
i think adding share and some other options to click would be a nice addition
- (jeff)isageek
I already said it here: http://friendfeed.com/e... but basically, make an additional option of "Flag". All "Likes" would be "Flags", but not all "Flags" would be "Likes".”
- Micah
Any change in the options would change the UI I'm used to, but I guess they could put stuff under More.
- Rah-PM 2012
I've thought a fair bit about the terms of "like" vs "share". There are pros and cons of each. However, when there is some bad news of some sort its very hard to click "like" when you really just want to share it because it's important... as Dave Hodson said.
- Jesse Spaulding
I wish when I "shared" in Google Reader it "liked" the original article in FriendFeed.
- Jesse Stay
I prefer "bump" and "mark", personally... for stuff I wanna pull back to the top for whatever reason, and then totally separate bookmarking, either public or private.
- abacab
I like Like. When I Like something it's not always to share, it's so it shows up in my LIkes/ Comments page so I can read it later. Leave it alone!
- Nicola Quinn
I want more than just like. Just a few more, like 'i sympathize' or 'interesting' or 'user defined.' Like lists, i want to put FF entries into lists instead of users. Yeah you could reshare into private rooms but then you lose conversation and possibly more related links. I'd pay $20 a year for that and an app like Thunderbird with tons of filter abilities.
- sergiooo
I'm happy that its' called 'Like,' I'm "liking" the article not "sharing" the article, the original OP is sharing it. If you want to share it then there is a 'resahre' option for this. I don't agree with having dislike added, let's try and be positive with things instead of adding negatively to a great community here. You would only get people question why you dislike it and cause arguments, I'm not here for this.
- Kol Tregaskes
Besides if you dislike something, then 'hide' it.
- Kol Tregaskes
I miss the site a lot! Not really anything to replace it with 100%. A little here, a little Buzz a little Twitter. I feel like a cyberwhore.
- Jorge Escobar
Louis, it's ok to be nostalgic. It's also ok to let go. And it's also ok to to hold on tight. As for me, I think I've gone to both places, and where I am at the moment depends on the day. FriendFeed is people. I've got one 100+ comment post http://friendfeed.com/search... . — Sincerely, A Friend.
- Micah
FriendFeed IS what Web 2.0 is suppose to be all about. A Social Tool that fosters fluid social interaction with interactive information sharing, interoperability and collaboration. It's a tool that really allows you to establish friendships with new people without being overloaded due to it's design (unlike Buzz). Many may have left and the volume may be lighter but it's still my favorite tool in general and I still see quality threads come in here.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I'm here every day, and barely interested in any other site. As Billy Joel once said, the good old days weren't always good and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems.

I agree with Louis but I'm quick to add that the experience is just different now.
- Akiva
I agree with Akiva who agrees with Louis. This isn't a "XX is dead" post. Just a sigh.
- Louis Gray
Oh me toooo! Can we make it happen again ??
- Charlie Anzman
We can't get them to add features to the core product, but people can write new things with the API and add features to the content creation sites that feed here.
- Bruce Lewis
CW, I'm feeling more positive than befits those lyrics.
- Bruce Lewis
I don't know, my experience is just as rich as it's ever been. Maybe I'm just easy to please.

These are the salad days. Hopefully we never reach the 'toss my salad' days.
- Morgan
As long as there are bacon bits in the salad, I'm good.
- Vicarbott
... that and a nice balsamic vinaigrette.
- Vicarbott
that's the problem of online communities - they cannot move. It doesnt matter how good the community is now, people just wont agree to move to the same place as one... They fragment, people move, new ones form, but large groups just never manage to move as one to a new platform. You get fond memories, and happy surprises when names reappear on another community later.
- Iphigenie
If by glory days you mean a the most kicking ass social activity aggregator a great community...well that hasn't changed...unfortunately the future of said kickass service and it's evolution could be construed as the missing link...don't mind me i'm drank.
- Mark Krynsky
Yeah, we don't have Robert Scoble anymore, but we do have a lot of value.
- Bruce Lewis
It's just that for many people this is no longer the primary aggregator and integration platform, and as a result conversations have slowed down, happen less, and are more often about "fun stuff" - still a good place, but not as stimulating and mind opening as it once was for me
- Iphigenie
sure i do! got very less to read now can't keep up with twitter and there isn't much relevant content in tweets, or we can say it is scattered

I can't imagine what it would be like to lose my brother. I'm sorry that this happened, Paul, and I am taken aback, in retrospect, at the time in your life this happened. Amazed you appeared to do well with all the tumult.
- O.Shane
Here "like" flag stands for "a great hug from all of us".
- Federico Bolsoman
I had a dream not too long ago: Steve came to visit. I gave him the biggest hug. I didn't want to let go. I told him, "You should meet the kids. They're so cute." I still cry everytime I think about what Steve went through and knowing that my children will never get to know their Uncle Steve.

- Stephen Mack
Yeah, I don't know a way to know how much of your own stuff has been liked.
- Rachel Lea Fox
*Bump* No, really. Serious question.
- Mark Davidson
I follow @replies back to twitter, if they pique my interest.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
I follow @replies back to twitter if they are interesting as well. :)
- James Stratford
The weird thing is that I _never_ see anyone's @replies on Friendfeed. Most likely because I subscribe to _way_ too many people :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
As an alternative you can create your own yahoo pipe and use regex to filter out anything that starts with @ and use a custom feed to feed your friendfeed. To get started: http://pipes.yahoo.com :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
I delete all my @replies from Twitter. But the few people I do talk to the most on Twitter, I'm following here on FF, so there's very rarely that many of them in the first place.
- Anika
Maybe you can try Facebook to Friendfeed and turn off Twitter in FF here.
- Steve Chou
See-ming Lee - Pipes is currently disabled. I blame Craig Newmark.
- Mark Davidson
Anika - Unless I'm mistaken, I follow you on FriendFeed, follow you on Twitter, and have you on my private Twitter List. lol. I think it would be too much work for me to manually delete all my @replies, especially if I'm on a roll.
- Mark Davidson
Steve - An interesting idea. What I want to keep are all my posts other than @replies. I RSS'd my Twitter Favorites to FriendFeed back in June and deleted all other Twitter posts but I'd really like to just filter out my @replies. I'm sure there's a way, and perhaps I'm just drawing a blank.
- Mark Davidson
@markdavidson omg wtf. Thanks for letting me know - no wonder my twitter mentions feed was not running !!!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
I miss the old days. Back then, if you saw a girl you liked, you just grabbed her and carried her back to the cave. Good times. Good times
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
See that, even when I go the ignore route I end up with the laughs.
- Joe "Brrzzzzzzt" Pierce
That actually works for some people. It's called "playing hard to get". Generally speaking, humans usually want what they can't have more than what they can easily get. But you need to know when to stop that and let yourself be "caught", or you run the risk of the other person thinking it's futile and moving on to the next "unobtainable" thing.
- April
Not sure I agree. Playing hard to get seems like ways people cover up their insecurities. I also prefer quality - and if choosing quality makes it seem like I am chasing unobtainable, than so be it. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Playing hard to get is an art, and not something that should always be used. When used most effectively, it's more of a backing off and not smothering someone with too much attention, till they show they want it. It also diminishes the appearance of being needy and clingy, 2 things that a lot of people find to be a complete turn-off.
- April
While it is sad, I think this is most definitely true.
- Martha
I think April is 100% correct. Courtship is a bit of a dance and the art comes into play between the fine line between playing it cool and leaving a woman feeling like she's being rejected.
- Mark Davidson
from BuddyFeed
Maybe it's the guys I choose to date, but most have a lot of things going on...so essentially they play it cool unintentionally but mind just enough attention. People who analyze courtship and treat is as a game usually end up EFing up or landing the kind of partner who likes games. Worst kind of person to be in a relationship with - I know, I've been there and done that. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Wait - Is that pie chart a Ms. Pac-Man insinuation? =)
- Micah
+++ Mona. Playing games gets old eventually.
- Lo the Baker
This is totally wrong... you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women...

Crap. I did the wrong thing by liking this post. I should have ignored it.
- Louis Gray
This post needs to die already! #diediedie Bottomline, if you're the type to play games or think that ignoring is part of the "courting dance" then we'd never date. #jussayin

Funny thing is - facebook is probably worth $3.99. Although I notice the French says $3.99 per month which would be a bit steep.
- Matthew Neale
but wait, i thought hotmail was closing the free service unless 2 million people add group Z ?
- Matt Randles
These groups are as old as Facebook itself. All they do is prove: heavy Facebook users = lemmings. :p
- Chris Charabaruk
There will always be a VIP group of sorts... back when Facebook started it looked like early adaptors were joining over there. Then came Twitter, now Friendfeed. If Friendfeed gets too mainstream (if that's possible) I'm wondering what's next.
- David Bisset (sn)
Why would they do that? They are already getting tons of money from sponsors and advertisers. Duh!
- Shevonne
@David: In the Web 2.0 world, there's bound to be something new and already in the works. I wonder what it is too, but I'd be surprised if it's not currently under construction, or even ready to launch.
- Chris Charabaruk
I wouldn't call them idiots. If they believe it, they believe it. So if it happens are the non-believers idiots? Hmmm
- Bwana ☠
:/... I doubt it will happen. They get enough money from advertising surely.
- ralphsaunders
This was the funniest quote I've seen microblogged in a while! Of course how many of these people use to (or still do) pay for Classmates or Reunion, so naturally they believe this garbage.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Reminds me of the false rumors a few years ago about AOL, Yahoo, and MS planning to charge for email to eliminate spam. Move on - nothing to see here.
- Mike Doeff
It's already 39,265 members in that certain group…
- Daniel Schildt
One thing to notice in this compared to older rumors is the amount of speed people notice it.
- Daniel Schildt
I might join and post something saying "Suckas!"
- Shevonne
40,000 now. Wow. I kind of enjoy the silly little worries of people.
- Daniel Zarick
wow. morons. Everybody knows that friendfeed's not gonna start charging until 2010!
- Vicarbott
These are the same idiots who are worried about being charged per email. I don't think they'd know what to do with friendfeed even if they were invited.
- Mr. Gunn
I wonder how many are over the age 0f 17. How many of voting age are in the group of 13,000.
- Franklin Pettit
I swear that first sentence just made my blood pressure shoot up 20 points. The second sentence rapidly lowered it. I have a few people added who unfortunately take everything forwarded to them as fact. They will never get an invite. This is my hideout from the people who shouldn't be allowed online.
- ilene
Chris, the group is not about pro features. They claim there will be NO free access to FB after Dec 31. Quite a different thing...
- Ray Metzen
And the group has 56,000 members now! Amazing... :(
- Ray Metzen
More than ever… 91,481 members at the moment of writing.
- Daniel Schildt
Hmm... I'm not sure which disappoints me more... People being overly anxious over the idea that Facebook will supposedly be charged for use. (This evidentially isn’t true) Or the knowledge that a number of people I don't care to count are here on FriendFeed discussing those that have joined groups concerning Facebook fees as if they are second class citizens. Take a good look at...

funny thing is people not wanting to pay when there getting new games and apps that can keep you entertained if it did cost (which it never will) i sure would pay the Cheap $3.99 month
- Luke Moers
Of course Facebook is going to start Charging people money! Everyone knows it! By the way, did you hear Obama tried to move Christmas to January 8th? (its a fb group too so it must be real!!)
- Rebecca
34 secs flat for my latest tweet. Thanks Paul and team for this!
- Jorge Escobar
wow, that makes actually want to use Twitter. I may just go tweet something.
- Mike Nencetti
It should be even faster than that Jorge, but our systems are getting near their limit. I hope to have it down to 1 sec sometime next month.
- Paul Buchheit
You are still working on Frienfeed (: how nice !
- mcd
^ That's probably the best part of this announcement, TBH. Good point
- LANjackal
from IM
whoa, it took less than a minute. i accdently tested it but it's great :) thnx
- asli subasi | ☮
awesome, keep it up guys, i knew you would not let us down
- Iggy Mwangi
You didn't break the FF Facebook app while you were at it, did you? It hasn't worked since.
- Tim Tyler
Oh, awesome!!! 12 seconds :) I can finally go back to Twitter (...okay no I can't I've turned into a Friendfeed junkie..) but prior it took hours upon hours for me to see a feed. Dumb I am, I never suspected a problem LMAO.
- Hollywood Amanda
Paul ?? Twitter updates facebook status and then facebook creates a new feed here on friendfeed. So we have same entries both from twitter and facebook on friendfeed. Could you guys please work on how we can avoid duplicate entries? Thank you. ( If there's already a way to avoid this, pls let me know)
- mcd
Cool, thanks, Paul! :-) RT Twitter updates have been missed. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
And just as I say that, I see my tweets are not coming into FF in real-time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol. I just tweeted and it was here before I could get out of Tweetie and launch Safari... It's working :)
- Johnny
from iPhone
Johnny, cool. Just me then. It's still slow. Maybe it's FriendFeed then?
- Kol Tregaskes
It truncates retweets, even in the middle of a link...
- Vezquex
seems that there are only 140chars allowed for a tweet (on FF) and the new twitter retweets are being translated on the way through to old RT @name style - thus are too long.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Kevin - that is an awesome logo!!!!!
- Susan Beebe
+102 for Bill Waterson references in picture Kevin or words Sinterclas
- SteVe C
cute but what happened to festivus this year?
- Laura Norvig
Merry Christmas to the FriendFeed team. You guys rock! FriendFeed reacts quickly and you're adding wonderful features all the time (Thanks soooo much for the "edit" feature.)
- Mitchell Tsai
Happy Holidays FF crue -- you've made this an excellent and memorable year for many of us. Facebook couldn't have done it without you! :)
- Christopher Galtenberg
w00t you gave me the best online year in 15 years!!! ;p Thanks a lot, everyone, for what you've done here XD
- Zu from AOD
Sigh. Sometimes it is the little touches, like seasonal logos or easter eggs, that mark a site as a living project, and that you really miss when the developers have all moved on to something else.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Louis is always awake. Allen is always asleep. Hmmm...
- Jesse Stay
Hm. Now Jesse, can you please go code those SocialToo improvements I requested?
- Louis Gray
jesse - dont you have some people to auto-block ?
- Allen Stern
im gonna get "cc.cc" for my shortener
- Allen Stern
Allen, Louis is SocialToo-proof. I can't auto-block him - I keep trying.
- Jesse Stay
for the record, I was not talking about Louis, Jesse you should know that Louis is unblockable and/or unbannable. This is part of the geneva conventions.
- Allen Stern
I know some people that have blocked Louis :-)
- Jesse Stay
surely no-one would block the king of social media pop (KOSMP).
- Thomas Power
Heavy pc and crt, ok, but the subwoofer too? You know how heavy those things are? This would work in space maybe.
- Josh Haley
And I wonder where it's getting powered from. Is there an extension cord behind him, or maybe he's got a generator attached to his feet?
- Costa Walcott
But which way would it point? Or should there be two, one aimed at his face, and one on the visor of his hat, to see what he can see?
- Ladyepiphanybug
It's a 'Trojan Horse'!! The hollowed out tower contains 8 Macbook Airs, 25 iPhones, a G1™[product placement by Google] and a handful of Newtons - just waiting to be deployed!
- Micah
There is a distinct lack of cup holder.
- Rochelle
True... where does the Mountain Dew go? Or coffee or Jolt Cola or whatever caffeinated substance he drinks?
- Ladyepiphanybug
Rochelle: thats what the CD Drive tray is for.
- Roberto Bonini
And even more, his patent on his infamous dancing shoes. :-)
- Jesse Stay
Seems like a can of worms to me. Who is going to decide who they honor and who they don't? This is a step down a political path that a Google would be wise to avoid.
- Dawn
Google should be more political. It's just very fine.
- Charbax
The worst part of this is that the trademark filing was only this past April. I am not sure if they will be able to use it against applications built prior to the filing. If they do attack apps like TweetDeck and Tweetie, then it will become obvious that they do not like their developers.
- Rob Diana
According to Leo Laporte Twitter doesn't even own the registered trademark for Twitter. Sounds like Twitter needs to decide *what* their trademark actually is. But yes, they have to defend it once they decide that.
- Jesse Stay
and your trademark doesn't have to be registered to exist - just has to be defended and identify your brand
- Jesse Stay
Am I just imagining things, or as recently as month or so ago weren't Ev, Biz, et al pretty much refusing to use the word "tweet". I always got the impression they were embarrassed by it.
- Ken Sheppardson
Does Twitter even have a General Counsel?
- Jesse Stay
You know, come to think of it, I don't remember even seeing "Tweet" being used until TweetDeck came about. Maybe the Trademark more rightfully belongs to TweetDeck?
- Jesse Stay
But strange trademarks are registered all the time. It would take lots of time and money to go to court and see what a judge would say.
- Pat Hawks
TweetDeck has some money - they could defend it, and seek damages as well
- Jesse Stay
Where's Iain Dodsworth on all this? Does he have any thoughts?
- Pat Hawks
Doesn't have to be a made up word to be a trademark. Just has to be distinctive in that industry, right?
- Pat Hawks
Owens-Corning has trademarked the color pink
- Pat Hawks
Regardless, I don't think Twitter wants to go down this road.
- Rah-PM 2012
Okay. I'm going to chime in here. For a short while after college, I worked as a private investigator (yes, seriously) at a firm and we investigated trademarks. Pat and Sean are right; it has to be distinctive to that industry. In case you were wondering, my job was to privately seek out registered/filed TMs to see if that was indeed the case.
- Tamar Weinberg
Tamar that's awesome (you being a P.I.) I'm now imagining you in a Detroit Tigers hat. :-) So who has more right to the "Tweet" claim - TweetDeck or Twitter?
- Jesse Stay
Sean that's a different Trademark - that's when used in that manner in a song. Trademark has to be specific to your industry, as Tamar says.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, I'm no lawyer; I simply did research and compiled legal reports. However, TweetDeck existed BEFORE the trademark was filed so chances are Twitter would NOT be able to usurp the name from them.
- Tamar Weinberg
I'm pretty sure TweetDeck was using the term, "Tweet" before anyone else, even Twitter. I think they claim right to it more than anyone.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, yes, I think they probably legally can. If you can show it has existed prior to the trademark filing, the new trademark owner probably will not be able to enforce it. One of the questions I asked when I investigated trademarks was when the product/service was first used. "First use" needs to be shown in the trademark app. The TWEET trademark filing by Twitter does not show a "first use" date, which is interesting.
- Tamar Weinberg
I think Twitter may be able to enforce that nobody uses the word "Tweet" from the time that Twitter filed the trademark app and onward, but it would not be ethical nor would it be legally enforceable, I believe, to force people to get rid of the names they'd been using forever PRIOR to the filing.
- Tamar Weinberg
p.s. if you're curious, the trademark serial number is 77715815. You can also access it here: http://tarr.uspto.gov/tarr.... The link in the TC comments doesn't quite work.
- Tamar Weinberg
Tamar, very interesting - I wonder if TweetDeck could sue Twitter now on basis of prior art
- Jesse Stay
I would argue I started using the term, "Tweet" because of TweetDeck, not Twitter. People have come to use it due to the use of the most popular Twitter client, not Twitter itself. I "Tweet" through TweetDeck. Everywhere else I just "Twitter".
- Jesse Stay
This is all beyond what I ever did -- it's definitely interesting. If Twitter threatens TweetDeck, they (TweetDeck) may have a leg to stand on. To be honest, I'd really need to find out if Twitter could actually *get* a trademark given that the word "Tweet" is so ubiquitous and relates to products that have been on the market prior to the filing. I really have no idea if the US...
- Tamar Weinberg
I don't think TweetDeck just pulled "tweet" out of thin air, did they? TweetDeck came out in July 2008, but the term was already widely used by then.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'd actually encourage any and all companies using the phrase Tweet to file a Notice of Opposition against the trademark.
- Tamar Weinberg
Ken, I wonder who the first to use "Tweet" is. Tamar, agreed - if I had "Tweet" in my name I'd be talking to my lawyer right now. The notice is probably pretty standard and most likely only an hour or two of work you'd pay for.
- Jesse Stay
FWIW, they only filed for the TM. They haven't been granted it yet. Maybe they won't be given the circumstances.
- Tamar Weinberg
It's looking a lot like they won't get it, ironically thanks to trademarks their own developers have applied for:
- Sam Johnston
That is *exactly* why FF will become more mainstream than twitter.. try explaining how to tweet to your parents (who are finally comfortable with email)!

I left Twitter for Jaiku. Then Jaiku left me for Google. I moved in with Pownce but it died. I went back to Twitter, but flirted with Plurk, Identica, and Rejaw, and even tried doing it myself with Laconica but it was Twitter I really loved. Twitter finally broke my heart so I left it for Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed is leaving me for Facebook. No...
It reads better than Soap - my roadmap is very similar but I'll forgive FF and live happily ever after with it (for the time being, anyway)
- Nicholas Paul Gordon

You're the best Leo. Canadians are the funniest people.
- Dan Lessard
I'm betting they'll slowly digest it into the Facebook news feed. They claim that Friendfeed is staying put for now, but that won't last.
- Ken Bauer
And we keep following Leo all over the place!
- Robert Scoble
When will we all get in a long term relationship and stop getting our hearts broken?
- Nate Pilling
so what is more important, the medium or the people, hope that FF will let us export our content, and our social netork :) (in my wild dreams)
- abdellah
Need ice cream? I'm new to FF, and kind of sad I didn't jump on the proverbial wagon sooner!
- Elizabeth K. Barone
I hope you leave your standard breadcrumbs so we can find you in the next chapter of social interaction.
- JCunwired
Feels to me like maybe it's time to go back to building a distributed network, rather than hopping from service to service.
- Ken Sheppardson
But where to next? That's the question. Wave sounds great, but the implementation will be a PAIN. So where? Oh LeoMoses...where is our path in the desert?
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Sounds like a hurtin' country song in the making.
- Bill Rodman
Well you can't say that what is happening in the 'social sphere' is boring by any means!
- Matt Cassem
I think Leo's audience is more likely to click "Like" or "comment" than Scoble's is. When Leo and Rob are both posting on FF, Leo gets more likes and comments
- Mark
Didn't you leave a post earlier saying how funny it was that people complain anytime there's a change (referring to the FF buyout)? This sounds like a complaint to me.
- Fleagle
Not complaining - just thinking about the future. I think a little Friendfeed DNA will vastly improve Facebook. And I think Facebook is already the big winner with the general populace. I also think we geeks need a corner somewhere else to hang out in.
- Leo Laporte
And I have no plans to leave Friendfeed. Yet.
- Leo Laporte
I feel more of a personal connection with the FriendFeed team than I have with other services I've left, and that will be a big part of why I will stay as long as possible.
- Louis Gray
^^^ replace "team" with "community" and there's my reason for sticking it out.

Its also going to take a very long time to go through content and bookmark/store it elsewhere. Evernote is going to be used heavily in the weeks to come.

what Louis gray said. I'm going to hang around until the lights go out.

I agree with Jonathan Hardesty "It's like the internet version of Days of Our Lives" - And sites keep getting killed off only to come back to life a month later!

very true, however on the other hand, we are getting closer to that one service which everyone will be on... and I dont think twitter is going to be that one

Facebook buying FriendFeed is like having to MOVE just when you got your house all dressed up and made into a comfy HOME! I don't feel like doing it again!
- Arleen Boyd
Now that Facebook and Friendfeed have married, I'm waiting for Twitfacefeedplebospacening.
- Anthony Marco
Leo, u by your self made two companies (services) out of 3 famous and made Google interested enough to buy 2 of them (Jaiku & FF). Google also tried to flirt with Twitter as well. So which one u choose now? Cause we will follow u :P

Speaking of Days Of Our Lives: Didn't that show jump the shark when the serial killer was unmasked as Marlena (a character I used to have a mad crush on, and who's now mostly a professional victim)? Then all the "killed" characters came back to life, since they were only what I call "soap opera dead"...

I've decided I'm not going to tell ANYONE which site I'm favoring... not even myself! I swear! As soon as I decided that FF was my new place (a couple months ago) THIS happens! It's like magic, but in a bad bad way...
- Mark J
Why do we all assume this is a bad thing? Maybe the FF Facebook combo will be better??
- Craig Shipp
Maybe they'll keep both open -- FF is the open side, and FB is the closed side.

I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. First, the accounts kept causing the password to reset, then they were suspended, all around the time of the DOS attacks. All I ever used Twitter for was to advertise my businesses, and for fun. Now I don't know where to go.

I think a lot of people LOVE to think negatively and don't want to think positively. They think FB is BAD and will ruin FF, but I think if they do it well, FB won't be the bad guy. I think most people who are irked about this are irked because they think the FFers "sold out" to the "man".
- Mol, FF Music Lover
@Mollyanna - I disagree. I am irked because the future of FF is completely uncertain. It's more likely that FB will let FF flounder and close it down than it is that FB will invest time and resources in maintaining and enhancing FF. FB has other interests and is splitting up the FF dev team. That does not bode well for FF. I don't begrudge the FF devs for taking the money. I would be...

I wish we could make FriendFeed into JUST an aggregator.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I think a simple switch that let you turn off FoaF completely, and/or only show FoaF for comments, not likes, would go a long way to cleaning things up.
- Ken Sheppardson
Even though there is conversation on FF, we can't have proper threaded conversation and that results in noise.
- Veetrag
I mean the options are there to turn off FoaF once you "Hide" an item, but they're buried.
- Ken Sheppardson
Robert: so, you're not interested in having an open conversation on friendfeed anymore? That surprises me.
- Joel
Ken: you can turn off FOAF: click on hide twice.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
@Scoble one response on twitter shows that, people like to see what others are replying too. We can't see that on Twitter.
- Veetrag
Robert, you can easily turn FF into just an aggregator. Feed your services in and don't interact. The only thing missing is an account setting to automatically disabnle comments on all of your posts, which can easily be requested in the Feedback room. Or, make your feed private so no one can see items to commeent upoon them.
- FFing Enigma
from fftogo
Robert - So, how does this insight affect your view of FF now?
- phil baumann
Phil: it makes me want better display options in FriendFeed.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
This real-time group discussion on FriendFeed is totally different from Twitter but I can't help but feel if you spend your time here, you might miss out on the general Twitter feed.
- Ken Seto
Ken: What is the advantage of general twitter feed, if all the twitter feed is anyways directed to FF?
- Veetrag
Robert - what kinds of additional options would you like rolled out?
- phil baumann
Well I'm not seeing anything happening on FriendFeed other than comments in this discussion
- Ken Seto
Phil: it also makes me want real mobile clients.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Robert, do you think to get 'real' feed mobiles have to support flash. because i believe with heavy JS would be unstable on mobile platforms.
- Veetrag
Robert, the way I see it, everyone's definition of "social media" is different. Some people will tolerate a little higher noise in their S/N ratio to glean extra information from open conversations on FF/Twitter. Others may want to eliminate the noise and just focus on a few select feeds. That's the beauty of social media, you can (within limitations of the software you use) determine your own level of interaction.
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Will take a look at PeopleBrowsr, thanks
- Ken Seto
Phil: I want to see a TRUE river of news. No popping up of things that get engagement. I want to see NO comments exposed. I want a REAL best of day (the ones I currently get show me old items. That is a start.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Jack: that is true which is why we need better display options.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Robert - so perhaps an option to for a collapsed view (text only - sort of like a reader) with options to define what comes up in the view. (I guess that would bring us back to some sort of modified social RSS :)
- phil baumann
Phil : We would also need a way in which we can like/unlike comments too. That will help us read only priority content. It can be one way around smaller screens.
- Veetrag
Robert - this somewhat reminds me of Muhammad Saleem's post comparing FriendFeed and SocialThing from March 2008. His goal was an aggregator, not another social network: http://muhammadsaleem.com/2008...
- Hutch Carpenter
But wouldn't using FF as an aggregator just make it more like a social RSS feed service? For my personal social media paradigm I would miss out on the conversation part of FF. Of course your paradigm may be different :O)
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Jack: I would keep that option on FOR ME but tons of others tell me they hate coming here because of the noise. I totally grok that now.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
I'll use Twitter and FriendFeed though, both were just great.
- Vince Ong
Understood. I appreciate that Robert. One of the things that initially drew me to FF was the ability to interact with people such as yourself. I would truly hate if we lost that ability, Of course I am sure your noise is a whole heck of a lot louder than mine :O)
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
Until FriendFeed makes hide even easier, this will continue to happen. People are generally too lazy to use hide to the fullest. I don't know if it's a design issue or a user issue, but people don't like to use it.
- Bwana ☠
I think it is a design issue. There are too many features stuck under the hide link.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Good point Robert. But where else do you put those links??
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
I've been loudly raising precisely the issues which Robert Scoble mentions in this post for over a year -- with zero feedback from Friendfeed developers. This is why Friendfeed's growth has been flat and will continue to remain flat. (But Friendfeed is still a great platform, even in its imperfect and much too noisy state.)
- Sean McBride
It amazes me that as of August 9, 2009, Friendfeed's developers, who seem to be brilliant in most respects, still have no appreciation of the importance of elementary design features like list view and the separation of unread from read items. The mind boggles. I really don't get it. And they don't seem to be interested in the hottest field in news reading and management: smart news recommender systems.
- Sean McBride
A fact that seems relevant to this thread: I discovered this post in the FFHolic Most Discussed feed in the Featured Sources box on Feedly's My Digest page. I stopped trying to read the chaotic torrent on Friendfeed's home page a long time ago -- a poor investment of one's time and energy. Without Feedly's elegant user interface, I wouldn't have seen this post.
- Sean McBride
I think the second thing i did on FriendFeed was to remove friends-of-friends because of you.
- Sam Pullara
