The Gillmor Gang - Mike Arrington, Robert Scoble, Jason Calacanis, Marc Canter, Andrew Keen, Hugh MacLeod, and Gabe Rivera - ring out the old year. Recorded Wednesday, December 31, 2008.
- Steve Gillmor
Please note that this is on friendfeed. Arrington and Calacanis give me a bunch of shit about me spending all my time on friendfeed. Just to get back at them I'm going to link to this on my blog.
- Robert Scoble
Even though I clicked "like", I thought the Scobleizer bashfest was a bit over the top. I'm sure it's all taken with the proverbial grain of salt, but still...I would hate being talked down to like that in public.
- Karoli
Oh, and if you link to it from your blog too maybe we can mess up techmeme. Doubtful. The headline isn't good enough here. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I give Robert HUGE PROPS for showing up... I'm sure he knew what was coming...
- Brian Roy
LOL to you, Robert about the Techmeme munge. Sure, I'll link to it from the blog. I'd planned to anyway. To the Friendfeed link, of course. ;-)
- Karoli
Robert - YES!! give them shit!! hahahaaa! they soo deserve it too!! * Happy New Year you FF addict! :)
- Susan Beebe
@scobleizer good headlines is not the gesture that is needed
- Christian Burns
Brian: Arrington sure knows how to get my goat.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: In the tone of voice being used, it wouldn't have mattered what he said. My goat was ready to bite him in the butt.
- Karoli
Funny I didn't hear so much attacking Robert as defending current position.
- Brian Roy
Thanking Ken and Robert for the coffee through the nose moment. ;-)
- Karoli
Ken: how long did you get into it? For the real lack of value you have to listen to about 23 minutes into this one.
- Robert Scoble
Yet one more good old boys dialogue simply repeating conversations many others are having, but given press because you are considered the top dogs of the 'net? Give me a break! Make it matter! You guys have the ability to create content that makes a difference and you simply re-purpose content like many bloggers. (where are the women in your group?)
- Sheryl
Sheryl, Gillmor Gang is unabashedly and unapologetically male because of how it formed and how it continues. It's produced by a woman and NewsGang Live has women on it...like me. :)
- Karoli
Ken: I never said there was anything interesting. Stop trying to look for it. You won't find it on the Gillmor Gang. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Sheryl: if you want real content, go to http://www.fastcompany.tv -- there you'll find Tim OReilly, Guy Kawasaki, and other smart people sharing their lives with you.
- Robert Scoble
@Ken Camp To be fair, robert specifically promised there would be no content on the show. Could he have done more? I doubt it.
- Karoli
Robert: Right, I forgot the issues part. No content, no issues. Vintage stuff.
- Karoli
Ken: no content, no issues, no good company. Sounds even better! Just having some fun. Personally I agree with you. If you want to learn something go watch the socialtext videos I put up today on http://scobleizer.com
- Robert Scoble
Not entirely content free, Robert. I'd have to say there's some good career advice in there for you. :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Robert, thanks for the commercial. I'm still struggling with the whole idea that my time is getting wasted because the herd points out all you superpowers and we all run to hear the next great idea only to hear the same stuff we get anywhere else on the net. Show me why you're better than that. Make it worth my time. I'm valuable too.
- Sheryl
Sheryl: it's like a diet coke: no calories. No nutritional value. But I still drink them. I actually agree with you. The good stuff I do never gets on Techmeme. That's where I disagree with Mike and Gabe. Only the stuff that gets a herd moving gets noticed. Welcome to my life. Sheppardson: interesting career advice. My videos pay me a lot more than anyone pays to advertise on my blogs. So, if I were a businessman I would just bag all of this and go shoot more videos.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Point me to your single best thing or idea. Show me. Let me see what YOU value and you think is important.
- Sheryl
Sheryl: the best interview I did this year was the one with Tim O'Reilly. But, what are you looking for? Something useful? I think this video with Google's mobile guru: http://www.fastcompany.tv/video... is probably the most useful one, but any of the workfast shows I did had lots of useful stuff in them.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Thank you. That's what I wanted. To know you heard...as opposed to herd :) Going NOW! :)
- Sheryl
Sheryl: I guess it depends what you're looking for. Some people just want to hear someone smart give you their ideas. That's why TIm O'Reilly works. Others want to get something useful that they can use on their keyboards. The Panorama video I'm doing a blog post about right now fits into that.
- Robert Scoble
Arrington really gets the concept of Twitter not being mainstream - there are many Facebook apps with more users than Twitter right now. Twitter is still far from being mainstream.
- Jesse Stay
A also think, based on what Gabe is saying, that he's now tracking Retweets to get content (from blogs) on TechMeme
- Jesse Stay
Jesse - so the "if everyone else jumped off a bridge you would too" method. I know we need mechanisms to determine rank (pun intended) because we want the "important" stuff... but at the end of the day we are simply classifying popular vs. unpopular.
- Brian Roy
Robert: I watched the video you did with Sumit Agarwal. It's really good and I quite enjoyed the SMS content. One clarification, truphone is NOT from Pat Phelan. It's James Tagg - James Body et al. Pat Phelan is maxRoam. They do sim cards. :) Going in search of Tim O'Reilly now . Thanks.
- Sheryl
Robert, I don't think you wasted time with Twitter and Friendfeed because you spent all that time with people learning what they think
- paul mooney
Brian, Techmeme is supposed to be a Democratic republic (somewhat) - most links win, but filtered by actual human beings to make the final decisions
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: that's NOT how Techmeme works. It works half off of links and half off of who has the best reputation for certain kinds of content (according to what Gabe puts in his database). I've seen posts get onto Techmeme without having any inbound links.
- Robert Scoble
"You're like a heroin addict, trying to convince people that heroin is a good thing" Haha. Keep it real Scoble, ignore those bozos. The jealousy here is pretty alarming. They just don't see it yet...it's not their fault.
- Kevin Pruett
really would have liked to hear what steve or marc had to say in defense of scoble
- Christopher Harris
That an audio?? great, can't hear it but never the less..it's proably a waste of time reading the comments.. i posted a few days ago here asking about all this "bitchfest" going on, comment baiting, who gives a shit really? why don't you guys tell us how you REALLY feel? ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I liked Scoble's steadfast self-defense. To recap: "Dude, you need to be paid for your work. Dude, we want you to write long thought pieces, on a blog, but we're not going to pay you." Lots of advice, from interested parties. Take with a small mountain of salt.
