"If a statement is false, that's the worst thing you can say about it. You don't need to say that it's heretical. And if it isn't false, it shouldn't be suppressed. So when you see statements being attacked as x-ist or y-ic (substitute your current values of x and y), whether in 1630 or 2030, that's a sure sign that something is wrong. When you hear such labels being used, ask why."

Top of Paul Graham's ToDo list: Don't ignore your dreams; don't work too much; say what you think; cultivate friendships; be happy. - http://www.paulgraham.com/todo...
"A carpenter, let us say, makes a door for a cabinet. If the door does not hang straight, the carpenter does not say, "I will not change that door; it is an expression of my individuality; who cares if it will not close?" Instead, the carpenter removes the door and works on it until it fits. That attitude, applied to writing, could be our salvation. If we thought more like carpenters, academic writers could find a route out of the trap of ego and vanity. Escaped from that trap, we could simply work on successive drafts until what we have to say is clear."

Thanks, Andy. No need for sorries, though! Everything I say in the letter is true, I have been very lucky and am feeling very optimistic about the future.

That sucks, but it seems you sort of expected it. Extraordinarily positive letter - I wouldn't have been able to write that, had I been in your shoes.
- Björn Brembs
Realy sorry to hear that - and impressed with your letter. Takes a lot of integrity to not take those kinds of decisions personally.
- Kubke
I am in awe of the maturity, integrity, and clarity of thinking you've shown here. I couldn't have done it. Really sorry this didn't work out better.

Nice letter. Still depressing to see that papers ("... deprioritize EVERYTHING except for writing peer-reviewed publications and grants...") is still the only way. But clearly, it will be UNM's loss.
- Rajarshi Guha
There's a good deal of irony in the fact that just before I read this, I was over at Anthony's open notebook discussing his research with him. UNM has missed an opportunity to be ahead of the curve.

Not sure what to say, Steve, so I'll just mention a typo: Arst. Just this week, I gave a talk on career perspectives for physicists http://slidesha.re/DPG2012... , and I had checked whether you already had reported back about your tenure decision, in the hope of being able to point to that one example of someone who consciously chose to go for what makes sense rather than what...

Scientific publishing is headed towards inevitable reform. Anthony is working from the bottom up. PLoS is working from the top down. Lots of others in between. Most of us have the power to work from the bottom up, so why not join Anthony, Mark, others?
