Jesus. I don't remember the last time my jaw dropped as far as it just did.

I've never read anything by him, but...wow, that's astonishing and sad.

I'll cop to not having finished Infinite Jest, but his essays are among the things that made me want to write. I'm saddened and shocked.

feeling totally stupid that the only time i talked to him i was over-the-edge drunk.

Although I got mightily irritated at Infinite Jest, the Armageddon game scene is one of the funniest things that I've ever read. All I know is that if he left a suicide note, it better have extensive footnotes.

does anyone know meg kribble & have contact info for her? trying hard to find my friend before she hears about it in the news.

floored and not surprised all at once. outside of his persona, he was just a really nice guy.

thanks for posting, steven. it's not been picked up by CNN.

when i was thinking about starting a writing program at Illinois State, right before he left, he was really generous with advice. unfortunately, i didn't get to study with him.

Infinite Jest was one hell of a book, and the essays in A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again are fantastic. Both the state fair and cruise ship essays made me laugh until I cried. He also inspired me to write nonfiction, Laura. Of course now I'm thinking about James Incandenza, and am just glad that Wallace didn't choose to go out like THAT.

A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again was, I believe, the first book I bought after I graduated from college, or just about. It's still sitting right here on my shelf, some nine dwelling places later.

My favorite piece of his was a post-9/11 thing he did for rolling stone. his experience as a midwesterner hanging out w/neighbors, watching the news.

Rochelle & Steven, looks like it is "The View from Mrs. Thompson's" and it is in "Consider the Lobster" and I will be reading it tonight for the first time.

Creative and depressed. Let's keep an eye out for people we know in such a state--and help them. RIP DFW.

I should have mentioned, Rochelle, that I thought of you soon after I heard the news. I'm glad you were able to tell her before she found out in a more impersonal way.
