The biggest ones? Maybe. But it's a subset of the Marketing/PR function and should be handled there. - Louis Gray
There's external social media, and internal social media. The internal stuff - getting the advantages seen out here - is tougher. How to get employee participation? Perhaps another angle on the mainstream adoption meme. - Hutch Carpenter
gotta admit the term Social Manager made me cringe at first :) - Steven Hodson
I know. I used "social media" instead of enterprise 2.0. Enterprise 2.0 has a "tools" ring to it. I wanted to focus on participation inside the workplace. Social media is a better term for that. - Hutch Carpenter
DreamFish (social network software for private organizations in beta) has a "Facilitators" box which I liked: (1) Community Manager (2+) any other facilitators. Aside from the other DreamFish stuff (basically Ning), this was my favorite DreamFish feature. Eventually: we might have high-level & low-level facilitators/"social media managers" of various types. - Mitchell Tsai
Some videoconferencing groups use live facilitators who watch people, and say "I think John would like to say something". There are also eye-trackers and gesture-trackers which try to automatically shift video to the videoconferenced-people who seem-to-want-to-say-something. - Mitchell Tsai
NCDC (Northern California Dance Collective) had a cool role in their meetings: "Vibe-watcher", someone to help manage overheated situations. We alternated roles at each meeting. It's sometimes useful to rotate the "devils advocate" role, so one person doesn't feel like they always have to be the "bad guy". - Mitchell Tsai

OK, bump :) - Mike Reynolds
A "Like" does as well, right? - Vince DeGeorge
Yes Vince it does - Steven Hodson
hehehe .. you know those old endless threads from the newsgroup days .. I wonder if we could have the endless bounce <snicker> - Steven Hodson
We could pretty much keep this at the top forever if we tried then ;) - Vince DeGeorge
possibly but only time will tell - Steven Hodson
Thank you, Hide feature >:-) - Mark Trapp
That's cheating, Mark. - Vince DeGeorge
You know, honestly... we have all the room at the top for different tabs. I would be nice to have the option to "pin" a conversation we specifically want to follow. - Vince DeGeorge

Joining the beach ball brigade... - Hutch Carpenter
@Vince actually that is a good idea - I've been rooting for a way to bookmark items to be able to follow or read later - Steven Hodson
careful folks we're slipping down to the bottom .. that doesn't make for a good endless bounce now does it :) <snicker> - Steven Hodson
You guys are hilarious. - Scott Beale
i want "bookmarks" too - Alejandro S.
Steven, there is a permalink to each entry under "More," but I like the idea of pinning things in general. I'll often check out a particular friend's feed and would like that permanently pinned, as well as pinning individual conversations. There's probably a greasemonkey script that already does this, but I don't know about it. - Vince DeGeorge
Vince: Apparently "likes" on old items (perhaps 1-2+ weeks old) no longer bump items to the top (which is good when I'm just trying to catch up on old posts...) - Mitchell Tsai
On FlyerTalk.com, we had to develop a protocol for "bumping", due to abuse by some people. Looks likes FriendFeed is actively working on algorithm management, which is good, because if 100X as many people join FriendFeed in the future, the current algorithm could be chaotic. Spock tries to award "better" people with more "Spock Power". - Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: I certainly didn't know that, but I guess it makes sense. I'm sure the idea is supposed to be constant flow of "new" information for followers. So that's just likes, but comments will still bring it back to the top? - Vince DeGeorge
New "comments" will still resurrect old items. Editing/deleting comments and "unliking" won't. - Mitchell Tsai

@louisgray: "there you go again" Go ahead and use "smilespam"...it's on the house! - Elliott Ng
@Todd, like all things, a service is what you make of it, but I've used "likes" as a way to cue the person providing the content that I liked what it was, and that I'm interested in more content like it. A lot of times I'll like something someone provided but not have something constructive to contribute to the discussion. The like provides a quick piece of feedback. Also, it's great for "starring" FF entries. - Mark Trapp
@Mark you've got a good point. The quick feedback is a helpful thing, and a service truly is different for everyone depending on how it's used. Personally, I find a whole lot more value in a conversational aspect of FF. - Todd McKinney

721 comments, 1093 likes. I want to remove some of my early likes, but currently FriendFeed has a bug where everything past #359 (page 11) can only be accessed through searches. I use likes (1) for discussions I like & want to keep permanently (2) items I like which I haven't had enough time to del.icio.us with a summary - or del.icio.us is down :-( (3) discussions which may/may not end up interesting. (2-3) are "likes" which might disappear. - Mitchell Tsai

@Mitchell would it not work to go to your "me" page and then click on the Like link. I tried this and it will list all the items you have liked. - Steven Hodson
Steven: The problem is after you click on "Like link" and go to page 11. Going to page 12-15+ gives you page 11. FriendFeed e-mailed me that it knows about this bug, and it's on their list. - Mitchell Tsai

Well, you could make the argument the we do self-medicine and "citizen" medicine all the time. We are constantly offering each other advice on our aches and pains, comparing our Lipitor dosages, telling people to take their Airborne before a long trick. Heck even a prescription for chicken soup might be considered citizen medicine. (SMILE) - Douglas E. Welch via twhirl

it would be interesting to have "comparative" posts where sites like Ars are held to the fire when tehy obviously "copy" other peoples work without proper attribution. - Steven Hodson
mg, there's an obvious pun on the ars technica name that i'm glad you're restraining yourself from using because it's so obvious - Eric Eldon
I have no such restraint myself -- Arse Technica. Childish and obvious, but I think of it every time I see it. - Vince DeGeorge
@steven - yeah I'm thinking that's how it should go, the problem is that I'll have to actually read the site again, I stopped cause it was just annoying and a rehash - MG Siegler

I just signed up with Disqus. It reminds me of a reverse CoComment. Is that site even around anymore? It was the shiz when it came out... lost track. - Lindsay Donaghe
I think Chris Miller of the Social Networker uses CoComment. Never really heard of it before seeing it on his site. - Corvida

Good post, Steven. I'm still in a wait-and-see mode on Disqus. Yes, at this point it does seem stupid to me, but I can change my mind. That's why my post said "debating". :-) - David Risley
@David - I realize what you were trying to do but I think if you can get over the idea that comments are something that only do you any good if they are on your blog then you might find Disqus a good service. I know that was something that I had to come to grips with and still do sometimes. - Steven Hodson

Steven, while this is not a psychiatrist's couch, how can we help you? - Louis Gray
not much for you to be able to do unless you are my hosting company - they must be all visiting their mother's .. not that the problem is their fault - I think I stumbled into a nasty WP bug but want to talk with hosting company before saying anymore .. plus it looks like we aren't doing a podcast this week either which would have been my high point of the day .. could have been really cranky given the circumstances :) - Steven Hodson
Who is your hosting company? - Shey
a good company who I like being with - like I said I don't believe this is a problem that originated with them but I need them to try and get things back to normal cause until they do my site is down .. email is fine .. ftp is fine .. only http is barfed - Steven Hodson

How do we get people to stay? How do we keep people blogging? That's the problem I want to solve. - Ginger Makela
So far my clique has remained intact. There are only a handful of bloggers I've connected with, mostly because my blog doesn't really fall into any specific niche. It's just what I feel like writing about that day, or mostly what I feel like sharing with whoever passes by. - Michael Beck
