Do we need one? Does anyone watch the Techmeme leaderboard (I haven't seen that since the week it launched)?
- Deepak Singh
I hope not -- I don't want another Twitter popularity contest
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I don't think there is need for one. I'm pretty sure will say the same as all other leaderboards.
- Fabian De Simone
I personally don't see the point of a leaderboard, but I'm sure one will pop up eventually.
- Chris Rossini
Deepak, yes TechCrunch has been pushing the TM leaderboard hard on their site and in crunchbase/bloggerboard
- Clint Ecker
from twhirl
Thats one of the cool things about FF, no crazy competition going on, everyone has his/her own leaderboard - check stats, and the people you find most interesting.
- jcunwired
I have not seen one yet, probably someone's gonna make one with the API.
- Gadiel Rivera
OK so let's not pollute the environment. Was curious if Scoble is #1
- Steve Rubel
With all the new activity, I've barely even SEEN Scoble today... info moving so quickly. Has he been on? -Calm down Peter, it's a fair question. We're all "friends" here, no need to get excited, though I understand what you're saying. If there is one, it wouldn't have to be used - some people just like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
Ever notice how only people who have a chance at being in the top 10 ask how everyone is ranked?
- Ranjit Mathoda
leaderboards are useful for easily identifying which bloggers you should send your PR/ new media proposals to.
- Sean Scott
Sean, sadly it's that exact behavior that ruins most online outlets
- Deepak Singh
Peter, why so upset? Just don't follow them.
- Eric Florenzano
I am not advocating one. Purely asking out of a personal curiosity if one exists.
- Steve Rubel
@Peter Dawson no cursing on my Friendfeed stream. Sorry.
- Steve Rubel
@Vince DeGeorge , I am calm..- my expletives are just af igure of speech :)- We have gone thru the same thign with T'rati, twitterboarding, Ning and every other social media site. The same mind set that creates a problem, wont solve the problem with the same thinking patterns.. BlogFights TwitBleeps, Comments Spamming are are the outcomes of the the question 'whos on top' . Sean pinpoints the right scenerio and Deepk ratifies the thought process.. What does "Just curious" mean ??
- Peter Dawson
@Peter Dawson Curious is literal. I want to know if one exists. There's no business connection here. I study communities and find that as soon as one gets popular people want to apply a Power Law to it. It's the nature of humans. I wanted to see if that has happened already here.
- Steve Rubel
If I'm elected Mayor of FriendFeed I promise cherry pie to everyone who votes for me every second Tuesday of every month as long as I stay Mayor!!!!!
- Thomas Hawk
@steve, I agree .. I'll take a mea culpa on the expletive.. however I am tasked to ask you, what is the 'power law" ? an't it just ranking of popularity ? Secondly as a point of contention "on my Friendfeed stream." - an't the streams ours , the community ? Jus curious :)-
- Peter Dawson
@Thomas Hawk: Make that pecan pie and you've got a deal. :)
- Morton Fox
hmmmm Pecan pie is pretty damn good. I'm trying to stay trim though and I think cherry probably has less calories.
- Thomas Hawk
@Peter Dawson I don't allow cussing on my blog so I don't want it on a URL with my name in it that I own. Re. Power Law - chronicled here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Steve Rubel
In the case of FriendFeed there is a much higher attention cost demanded by frequent posters. With Twitter, I can consume them all so much faster. But, the nature of the content here, the UI, and the continual refresh make it much more time intensive. Thus, I find the high volume producers to be less tolerable.
- Christopher Sacca
@steve, me thinks powerlaw is an inverse of "Hauser's Law" - signal /noise ratio remains constant no matter how popular one gets. wrt to URL to name , who owns the URL , who owns the net and who owns the content ?
- Peter Dawson
Why do people need leaderboards? It is time we get rid of the tribal thinking where we look up to the leaders. Each and every person is a leader for himself. Letz abolish the inferiority complex thatz prevalent in the world. This quest for leadership is absurd, IMO.
- Krishnan Subramanian
Pity that Steve actually deleted my 'potty mouth' comments. Why ? an F$CK is is really not expletive in 2day vocab- however calling out a PR person in the open seems to be associative with being a 'potty mouth" , yes Steve pls delete this comment too :)-
- Peter Dawson
@ Peter Dawson you can call me out anytime even with a $ or a @ or a % or a # in the words. Those stay up.
- Steve Rubel
interesting how this simple question generated a lot of feedback. Definately seems to be a litle backlash against leaderboards.
- Sean Scott
everyone important to me is on my friends list …
