A couple of weeks ago I switched to digital cable because Comcast decided to remove MSNBC (one of the few stations I do watch) from the analog lineup. Now that I have all of these additional stations -- and am paying more for the privilege -- I feel like I should watch TV to "get my money's worth." But doing so is almost like a chore/errand. And when I do I have both a laptop and my sidekick in front of me. :-)

@Steve, not really surprising since the average age for head of household is 49.5 (census data)

The cost of cable is also a big reason why I bet. As a 27 year old that makes decent money - I am not willing to spend $100+ dollars for 1000 channels when I only want to watch 5. An "a la carte" pricing package would bring back young people. My friends that do have TV watch it (and almost all do it WHILE on the computer)

the 'social lubricant' is wearing off the younger folks!

The idea of dropping big bucks on a home entertainment system must seem strange to recent college grads who have managed to entertain themselves for 4 years with a computer and possibly a dorm sized set + gaming system.

Are "kids" into watching sports on TV? Let's say about 50% are. How many of those are so into sports that they want to focus on the sports broadcast without the distraction of other people? Part of the fun of sports is watching games with friends. But let's assume that these sports fans are introverted and only want to watch games with one other sports fan. We're down to 25% in need of a tv. As has already been observed, equipment and service isn't cheap. And sports bars have good equipment, more social opportunities, and, of course, beer! :-)
