I've always wondered about this: what is the proper syntax for emoticons within parenthetical phrases? Does the emoticon serve as a closing parenthesis, or are you supposed to do something like this: (this is a parenthetical phrase :) )?

If you read the NY Times piece, it makes a compelling case that it was intentional and not a typo. But there's no way to divine whether or not it was meant to be a smiley.

I'd have thought that you could tell if it was intentional by the context within which it was used. Does the sentence fit that item?
