Not sure if I'm cool with "twuser". Lends itself far too easily to "twluser" :P - Brad McCrorey
That's crazy, Twitter has not let me follow new people for a while now but never shows this error (only something strange happened, please refresh the page and try again). Interesting to know what exactly the limit is as mine is definitely a strange number. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
why would you ever want to follow that many people? -just curious - Jason Fleming
@Jason: That's a usual question :) I added tons of people first on Twitter to get a grip of what to do and continued when new people followed me that I found interesting. Now I really want to stop following some to make place for new people and can't as no application that shows mutual followers seems to be unable to cope with API limitations - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
This is definitely a temporary limit that gets triggered when you follow a lot of people in a short amount of time. There are more details this and other new limits on Get Satisfaction:http://getsatisfaction.com/twi... - Mike Doeff
@Mike: This definitely is not my case, I only follow 3 or 4 new people per day now so I don't think it's a lot in a short time. So it is probably about the actual countable (not time-based) limit we are looking at. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
Dave, why not skip Twitter entirely. With FriendFeed you can choose a cool graphic to go with your link. You can't do that with Twitter. Really FF is a superior platform. - Thomas Hawk
I actually prefer to post links on Friendfeed. On Friendfeed, I don't have to use a URL shortener. - Morton Fox
jump to the end: post to FF first. these days it seems you'd be right more often than you are not... - Russell Holliman
Thomas it's the people. There are a lot of people who use Twitter who don't use FF. It's only geeks here near as I can tell. I don't think the people here are all that interested in some of the things I'm interested in. And there are a lot more idiot Republicans here. I like intelligent people and there aren't too many smart folk who are willing to admit to being Republican these days. So you're pretty much left with the slimedogs. Present company excepted of course. :-) - Dave Winer
I'd go FF first. Most conversations of value based on the link will happen here anyway. - Duncan Riley
I'm using FF differently than Twitter. I follow many fewer here and am being followed by many fewer. I like the intimacy, talking mostly with people I actually know in most cases. At Twitter I have many followers and use it to get more viewership of a new blog post. - shelisrael1
You can always post on twitter first, and import it in ff. - Jacob
why would you want to post to twitter directly? - Sean Savage
Duncan and Thomas have it right. You always have the option of using Twitter but participating in Friendfeed returns more. I use both as many do (but hide and just occasionally look at the Twitter posts to avoid overload). It's getting better each week. Simply a matter of how YOU choose to set it up. - Charlie Anzman
I have advanced degrees and an IQ of 135; I've been a highly successful educator at both the secondary and collegiate levels. But because I identify with the Republican party, I'm an idiot according to Dave Winer. - Gregory Pittman via fftogo
Gregory... That extra 4 points I have on you in the IQ stakes must be the part that accounts for sarcasm, humor and the ability to know that generalisations are rarely accurate... - John Worthington
@John - or the part that does reading comprehension, since Gregory obviously failed to parse "a lot more", "not too many", and "pretty much". - Jeremy Raines
watch out, this policy made me fell in-love with FriendFeed... - Orli Yakuel
Cool. That way Twitter can stay up. ;-) - Vic Podcaster
idiot republicans? slimedogs? Even though I'm a democrat I find broad sweeping statements like that to be problematic. I'd like to think that I'm more open minded than that. I also think that politics are not the only thing to talk about in the world and think that gauging someone's intelligence or the value of their conversation by their political party affiliation is, well, pretty idiotic. - Thomas Hawk
Getting back to the subject, why not start posting here first anyway? - David Weiner
Thomas is one of an ever-decreasing number of people from all points of the political spectrum for whom disagreement on issues doesn't degrade to personal attacks. Thomas and I might disagree on what the problems are and what the solutions to those problems are, but we would be able to have a valuable conversation. I appreciate that very much. - Gregory Pittman
it's funny how Americans can feel in their stomach being part of Rep or Dems, when the whole world knows deep in their stomach that there is not a glinch that diferentiate both parties a part from the color of the tie, i'm not saying we are better in Europe or elsewhere, i'm saying we're all screwed, - Ben Borges
@Ben yeah democracy sucks that way... naturally breeds moderate points of view - Rubin
Good policy! I'm starting to followthat too. - Shannon Low via twhirl
is it still democracy ? i'v seen bush with a "christian cruz" on his back while speaking on tv, (terrorist) for me it's middle age democracy. - Ben Borges
I am trying to do this too, but my friends aren't actively using FF yet. - Michelle Lentz
Starting on FriendFeed today. Put me down as an AFTU (Another Frustrated Twitter User). - Michael E. Rubin
that's been my policy of late...i can't even follow ppl on twitter today - Sarah Perez
I actually prefer to use Twitter for less important messages and FriendFeed for stuff when I want to generate conversation. The idea behind my logic is that some people, to reduce the noise, block all tweets, as they consider tweets less important. I agree with these folk, so I use Twitter for stuff that they're probably not interested in. - possible248 via NoiseRiver
An amazing use of sign language with a hi dramatic effect for little money. Got me thinking about those who have to use sign language on a daily basis. How much "clean up" happens? How much word censorship do these people have to put up with? - Steve Allen
I've been seeing a bit of a delay with activity showing up on here... - Jason Peck
It seems very random. Some people see all my tweets, others seeing nothing. Nothing currently turns up in "archive". A really bad week for Twitter. They have some cash & the suport of Bezo's, so i'm sure they can fix this, even if that means shutting down a few days & re-emerging with a new infrastructure. - Steve Allen via Alert Thingy
I look at my 'archive' tab and don't see many tweets --inconsistent. - Jeremiah Owyang
A friend in Portland reports "no issues" today. Looks like Twitter randomly selects users to torture. FriendFeed is working, but my friends still want to chat on Twitter. I've started to use GTalk. What's the world coming too :) - Steve Allen
Good idea. Twitter has lost a lot of momentum lately. It's still good for "microblogging", but it's missing a solid feeling of discussion. That's where FF stands out -- centralizing the conversation. - Jeff Beckham
Way to go Jason. My choice too. I'll read the conclusions you'll draw on that move of yours :-) - Eric Sausse
Not a bad idea, I've found SocialThing and ping.fm have helped expand my horizon's from Twitter - David Sky
@jeff - I totally agree with you. Also, I just think that its easier to actually find a discussion I want to participate in. It's just silly sending an @sign to a person you don't follow/know . Twitter is more about what folks are doing (catching plane to Austin) as opposed to sharing ideas and developing a conversation. With friendfeed, its more casual to just post a comment on a thread walk away and come back later to see how the topic evolves. - Richard
This is a smart idea. hard to focus on FF while on Twitter. (Plus Twitter will probably crash 10 times during the next week). Plus FF has a bunch of new features to toy with. I'm tempted. - phil baumann
way to go Jason, reference Robert Heinlein and NOW you are the VICEROY!! - David Blumenstein via twhirl
I really prefer twitter over friendfeed, but good luck nontheless - Mike Martin
does that include not responding to twitters via FF? - Pokai
Hey I was wondering how long it would take to get you and Steve Gillmor using FF...wow, you both must have drank the same koolaid this week! - Susan Beebe
I think it is an interesting experiment. What would happen if you just posted and shared stuff using FriendFeed? What could a big hitter do for FriendFeed by doing just this? Keep going Jason, you tend to be a bit of a maverick and really spice things up (which I like). - Paul Jacobson
Yes, I will be checking off the "send to twitter" in FriendFeed. However, 99% of activity will be FF not twitter this week. - Jason Calacanis
You didn't check it off for that one. Considering you just sent a Tweet to yourself... - Chacha via twhirl
Where is the "send to twitter" feature? That would be really helpful... - Marc Vermut via twhirl
Its on the website, you are using Twhirl which doesn't use the feature - Chacha via twhirl
Chacha, you can send to twitter from friendfeed when you reply to a comment, but not when doing a new post. Unless I have missed that option. - Daniel Robitaille
You are correct Daniel :) But the feature to send a Tweet when replying to a comment is only found on the website - Chacha via twhirl
I'm curious to see how long until FriendFeed starts to get as glitchy as Twitter myself. - blackmailismylife
I just got a glitch myself. Someone comment on a Tweet, I commented back, and now both comments arn't there - Chacha via twhirl
Looking forward to this. Jason, interested to see the results of your efforts, and feel free to reach out to those of us who have been living here for nine months now. Taurus and Fondue will love you better for it. - Louis Gray
Sad that we're commenting here instead of on Twitter. Sad for Twitter, not for Friendfeed of course. :-) - Dave Delaney
Yep, I like Twitter, but I have to admit that I kinda like FriendFeed. Even if Twitter used to work better, conversations are not it's strength, and I find FriendFeed really more efficient in that regard. - fbrunel
I joined FF because of this article, but it's difficult to convince more friends to move over to friendfeed when I've already got them on Pownce and Twitter. - Michael Narciso via twhirl
I love the photo on that post. Suddenly the 405 doesn't seem so bad. - Mark Krynsky
interesting... I haven't particularly noticed that. Maybe I'm not swimming deep enough in "conversation" - Stephanie Booth via twhirl
oh, and I'm commenting here because this is where I happened to see the post go by ;-) - Stephanie Booth via twhirl
Were there ever really conversations on twitter? I thought it was more of a noisy room where people shouted at each other in hopes of being heard. - Andrew Garrett
I'm still trying to figure out how you converse in a crowded and noisy bus. Once I know that, I'll have well-honed twitter skills, for sure. - Bernie Goldbach
Well, I just got the Friend Feed version of the Fail Whale, so be careful what you wish for. - Shemp DeYoung
I get the feeling that we are reaching a tipping point for Twitter - Jamie
My first day really trying to ignore twitter. FriendFeed just doesn't feel the same but if it enables 2 way communication i'm in - Steve Allen
i still like Twitter. but while i wait for it to get its act together, i'm cheating on it right now by using FriendFeed. call it an open relationship with no strings attached. heh. - Christine Lu
But the fact is, we've already done so much on Twitter, and leaving it would be throwing all of it away and any hopes of it making a comeback. But what I see here is still a Twitter message which proves that most of our elders on FriendFeed are still using it. I'd like to see any of you cease to use it anymore, and maybe it will have a greater affect on others to do the same. - Josh Jenkins
I just have a lot more followers on Twitter :) I don't think everyone is ready to switch to FriendFeed just yet. FriendFeed doesn't have a lot of features like SMS, and it really doesn't cater that well to regular messages - Chacha via twhirl
I prefer reading things on friendfeed but I still tend to only post to twitter. Strange isn't it? - Jason Mitchell via Alert Thingy
I don't think that FriendFeed has that great of a Messaging System. Just really a Sharing System - Chacha via twhirl
Going along with that comment, I can't really find another service besides Twitter that updates as frequently on FriendFeed - Chacha via twhirl
That's just damn fine writing. You had me at "frail architecture." [Also, if Twitter was mentioned on The Daily Show, then it has finally jumped the snark.] - Donna Mugavero
I've taken the week off from Twitter.... the commenting system on FF is amazing. Twitter needs to step it up. - Jason Calacanis
I have to agree with @chacha102, I don't think everyone is ready to fully switch FriendFeed - Justin Yost
Twitter folks have gotta be shitting bricks right now - Jarin Udom
I think twitter will end up being a place for status updates as it was initially intended. - Tsega D
Quick Unsolicited PR/Customer Service Tip - When there are signs of a mass migration away from your service, it's probably not a good time to schedule a mid-day three hour maintenance window. Just grin and bear it until the next after hours scheduled maintenance period. - Ken Sheppardson
Sprague, scroll back a few more pages. It's rearing its ugly head again. - Cyndy
Would I be so bold as to suggest that conversations YOU are involved in are moving to FF. This is not one social network. There are thousands upon thousands of cliques within the network that are quite happy with twitter being a slow sometimes unreliable SMS/IM replacement as there are active communities on Pownce, Jaiku and Jiwai.de. - Dedric
Cool. I've got this great idea. It's.....wait for it...TV on the internet. We slam a site together in PHP & get some VC!!! What do you think? I've ordered my Ferrari already :) - Steve Allen
“What the hell is wrong with me? From 6:30am-7am on a Saturday morning, I'm looking at FriendFeed. Mind you, I am at home alone... No rugrats to wake me up. I'm going back to sleep - and might even sleep late!”
I'm trying to use it - and trying to be liked. - Wm Scott Rees
Feedalizr helped me to not use it to pose (I think). Made the key social features, like comment and like, much more relevant and those in turn have brought me more diverse and interesting content and contacts. - Michael
I'm a poser turning into a convert. Crack shop twitter has cut & mixed their dope to the point where it barely works. I really hope that twitter recovers as otherwise ppl will get used to a more stable experience on FriendFeed. But if everyone jumps to FF, we might see this service becoming the new twitter of instability. - Steve Allen
I'm real on Friendfeed and twitter, but I pose on Pownce, Jaiku and Facebook to some extent. - Andy Roberts
Yeah some of these social networking sites you just don't get and they tend to be more infrequently visited/used - David W
I'm trying to really use it because I like it. There are so many similar things out there so it tends to be overwhelming if you don't focus... - Rebkin
I started out a poser. I started out not liking it at all. I thought there was too much noise. But now that I use tabs when I use it on the Web -- it becomes a start page and I end up focusing my attention there. Also, since recently downloading feedalizr it's become a perfect communications tool. - Lynne d Johnson
I like all of your comments here. You are all using FriendFeed right! :) Even though I wrote the article, I am 'liking' this because of the comments. - J. Phil
