I have to say, the only time I can really express the value of FF is when people get annoyed with Twitter, and I say, it'd be nice to have an aggregator, right? And then, they get it. Or a big bubble diagram showing RSS feeds and overlaps

Thanks Robert. Great overview of FF. Where do I send a check? :)

Great, I'm going back and forth from the video as I set up a friendfeed account. Thanks!

I think the people who liked the NYer cartoon are the ones who felt Obama let them down with teh FISA vote and are still going to vote for him. Here's why...
He didn't stand up for us, so we're not going to stand up for him. I'm still going to vote for him cause it's in my self-interest to do so. But on a personal level? Don't support him anymore. Used to. Now he's on his own.
- Dave Winer
Between FISA support, supreme court decisions, his sudden support for faith-based initiatives, and Iraq war, I have to agree. He's not the same candidate he was in the Democratic primaries. Just another politician.
- jcunwired
Is anyone actually surprised at this? Everyone should've seen this coming once the general got underway.
- Akiva Moskovitz
The only rationale I can think of is because he is going for a full 50-state strategy and in that process, is trying to appeal to a broader, centrist base - which most presidential candidates never do (they just try to energize their base). He can't just win this on democratic votes. His vote on the FISA bill especially for me was a big slap in the face. But at the end of the day, he is far superior to McCain, and I can only HOPE (ha) that he'll overturn the FISA bill once he's in office.
- Ashish Tonse
I must be one of the few who aren't that upset by the FISA bill. At least there is a court overseeing the whole process now, where there wasn't before. Like Andrew Sullivan, i feel there are a lot of other things to get properly worked up about, one of them being, ahem, torture, an issue he is unequivocally on the right side of. (It's depressingly off FriendFeed's radar, for some reason.) He's also come out against CA's Proposition 8, something I doubt any other Democrat would have the courage to do.
- Rick Powell
It's not a matter of liking the NYr cover. I just don't like the crazy, overblown reaction
- Lee Stranahan
from Alert Thingy
I don't see retroactive telco immunity as court's evidence of oversight.
- jcunwired
Oh, and as Sean's share points out assertively, Obama is the only one who can get us out of Iraq. The only one. That's not a small thing in my view.
- Rick Powell
I agree with Jody. The only thing companies fear is loss of clients and lawsuits. And you take that fear of litigation away from them, there is simply nothing stopping the telecoms from fully complying with the government. Nothing short of people cancelling their phone service. And we all know how that goes. It doesn't.
- Ashish Tonse
Looks guy, Obama is not what he pretends to be! I would love to see a Black man as USA president! Someone as Clarence Thomas! Obama is not Black, he is not White! He is trying to please everybody and pleasing nobody! Who is Obama? What is his identity? What are his roots, his morals? He does not want anyone to know what he stands for! He is just a blank card that will be used by alternative agenda people! I rather know what my President is going to stand for, if I am the one electing him!

- Lee Stranahan
The honeymoon is over. Obama is now running for President, with all that implies: need for vast sums of money, move to center, compromise with non-liberal voters. And now the backlash begins. "But he's OUR candidate! How dare he."
- Leo Laporte
I take it as read that politics is all about compromise, and money. Take the latest vote on giving Telecoms immunity. Nancy Pelosi says she voted for the bill because there might be another bill that's worse than this one. I just don't see how a politician can be elected without selling themselves out in some way. I like Al Gore far better since he left politics (sort of) than when he was an elected official. For me the longer I'm around the more cynical I get. Lost my virginity with McGovern.
- Henry Burger
I don't agree with Obama on immunity - but I'm a supporter and he was NEVER the most progressive candidate. Obama is being pretty consistent here with what I expected in the primary and the more I think about it, the more I agree with Keith Olbermann's take on this - Obama might be being smart here.
- Lee Stranahan
from Alert Thingy
I got the same email only they asked me for $25 bucks. Maybe it's proportional to what you've donated in the past?
- Kyle
Kyle - it's much more effective to ask for a small amount - those who can do more will, and those who cannot won't be offended.
- Anthony Citrano
@Henry Burger - You like Al Gore more - that's understandable. Firstly, because he does his cool slide show. Secondly, because he doesn't have to make possibly uncomfortable choices any more. Telling the world what's wrong is easier than fixing the world. If he actually had to fix the environment, he would have to make choices that a lot of people wouldn't like.
- sebmos
Kyle, all my donations have been $100.
- Dave Winer
I had a donation of $30 dollars during the primaries. Sounds like they are just asking you to re-donate the same amount you have in the past.
- Kyle
Of course you're an ATM-what do you think he wants to show up at your house and shoot baskets with you while he finds out about what issues really matter? If you want that you better put a lot more zeroes behind the amount you give.
- Mark Forman
@Mark Forman - You obviously don't understand the US election donation law.
- sebmos
@sebmos - you obviously don't understand humour :)
- Jordan Brock
Yesterday I was sitting with one of Obama's Tech Advisers. We were having breakfast. He told me to look around. He said that everyone around us was Clinton's biggest money supporters. Turned out he was right, they spoke to these people later that day. They are very pissed, he said. Why? Because they raise money millions at a time. Obama has gotten them out of the loop because they were no longer able to buy their way to power. So, I'm now far more willing to be seen as an ATM by Obama.
- Robert Scoble
There is always power and luxury to those that cater to those outside of the borders they represent. Obama and Corn will turn America into a modern day plantation for fuel. No energy diversity here. All about the money
- Noah David Simon
So Obama is a bum because we all don't get to have a personal sit-down meeting with him?
- Mike Doeff
I believe it is called a "Cash Crop Economy". America really will be a 3rd world nation, because we won't be able to eat our own food! Energy for the rest of the world. No more corn bread.
- Noah David Simon
@Kyle and Dave: Typical fund raising is to ask for the amount you gave previously or a slight bit higher. It's all dynamic. You gave $30 last time, you might be asked to give $35, doesn't sound like a lot, but that's a 17% increase in giving, do that across a vast donation base and it adds up - quick. Politics and money are intertwined (like it or not), and I'm happy Obama and Democrats have finally figured out and harnessed direct marketing.
- AJ Kohn
I think it's pretty amazing to see the extent to which Obama's supporters will rationalize his pointless conservativism.
- J T. Ramsay
All this talk about money and special interests is why the US should adopt the California policy of two term limits. It keeps anyone from getting to entrenched and beholden to special interests. Or we could go to the Mexican policy of only one term and the holder of an office can not campaign for a new position unless they resign from their existing position. This eliminates the advantage of the incumbent and keeps the person focused on governing not raising campaign funds. The current system if broken.
- Jon Erickson
Leo, then let him get the money from non-liberal voters.
- Dave Winer
Obama is just like every other politician. He flip-flops and begs for money. I love how he said he would use public funding and then as soon as he found out he could get a whole lot more from people, he's doing that.
- Jason Mitchell
from Alert Thingy
Finding it sad that once again Democrats are finding ways to divide themselves and look for ways to lose an election.
- AJ Kohn
I feel honored that I'm being asked for my support... the alternative (the rich and special interest groups) form of funding has put us where we are now. Why isn't McCain asking for your $100? Because he doesn't need it and you definitely don't get to tell him how you feel.
- Nathan Manley
from Alert Thingy
I don't feeling like an ATM either. Ease up - money is important. Agree: focus on community building more.
- Brian Rendel
from twhirl
better you being the ATM than Big Pharma, Oil, etc.
- Aaron Brethorst
If I recall the book, didn't Freakonomics authors find that money really didn't affect the vote by more than 1%? Will Obama spend $300 Billion this fall for 1% of the vote?
- Daltonsbriefs
I'm not sure why that's "news". The clothing someone wears at a political event is irrelevant to my political beliefs.
- Dave
It's what passes for news in this crazy world we live in.
- Dave Winer
Imagery and design matter - ask Apple and Starbucks. More importantly, the colors were the blue from OBAMA'S pallette...it was nice, actually.
- Lee Stranahan
from Alert Thingy
Could be it was planning for a flyer photo. That shade of blue goes with his logo. Little other evidence of the campaign having a production designer though. If you _really_ want to get down in the staging weeds, note that his flags are synthetic and often wrinkled, note that the type in unity sign today was not looked at by a designer -- serifs on the "I" were as wide as the crossbar on the "T". It's a curse to notice these things.
- Amyloo
You don't like his tie THAT much? :)

The mobile component of Twitter is still the winner for me. This is better for conversation, but still not really intended for true status.
- Jared Smith
@technosailor - Now that I've started work on Blackbird, I could clone it for FriendFeed's API - got a suggestion for a good name? :-)
- Dossy Shiobara
@queenofspain - yeah, "BlackFriend" isn't the first name I'd use, LOL. FriendBerry isn't exactly great, either. BlackFeed? Uhh...
- Dossy Shiobara
I'm trying, but I need a Twhirl type program that works for FF.
- Summer
FFtoGo works well, better than FF on the iPhone. Still needs "hide" though.
- Thomas Hawk
You can change the colors pretty easily with the Stylish Firefox extension. The appropriate style is at http://ungroundedoutlet.com/misc... (I can't add it to userstyles.org right now as that site is not working)
- James (@willia4)
"BerryBuddy" ...but it sounds like one of my daughter's Strawberry Shortcake dolls
- Erin @queenofspain
Now that I have SMS gateway via Post2FF, the only thing I'm missing is WAP browser support (aka mobile) and the rest of my friends from Twitter.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
@itsinsider - Cool names, but FriendFeed's "mascot" isn't a bird (like Twitter's), is it?
- Dossy Shiobara
Agreed. Also, if you don't like the Friend Feed web interface, try Twhirl

Hey James, thanks. I knew about Stylish but the code for friendfeed works well.

I do use Twitter via the SMS interface and would want to have that functionality still.

I find it very interesting that this article appears in the Financial Times. Definitely more interest in this new platform is coming from the Business community; until recently FriendFeed was only visible for the more IT oriented people IMO.

Just installed Stylish and suddenly Friendfeed is a much nicer place to be.

Because they did NOTHING innovative...the in-store CDs were priced extra high. We know we're getting raped on the coffee pricing. Give us a break on music.

You can't use Qik in the Oval Office but you can Twitter. How do I know that? Because today Congressman John Culberson met with the President and he said the Secret Service wouldn't let him do live video but he did Twitter from there.
Why do I find it hard to believe that the president who touts using "the Google" and the "Internets" uses Twitter? Lord knows, McCain has yet to master Windows solitaire.
- Chris Reed
Thanks for the Twitter link. It will be really interesting to follow a politician on Twitter.
- Chris Rodgers
Where can you find the Congressmans Qik Feed?
- amarquart

- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
very cool -- like what i see... following Culberson now.
- Andy Sternberg
very interesting to see that Culberson also follows you back- almost immediately unlike some of the other politicos mentioned in yesterday's blog post.
- Nathan Eckenrode
John Culbertson followed me back immediately and then we even tweeted. I am still unsure about the other two mentioned. I can't seem to find the rep from OH and the rep from AZ (I think) his tweets have the feel of a staffer. Bears another look today though. By far the best thread yesterday!
- Mathew A. Koeneker
I had a back and forth with Congressman Culberson last night on gas prices on Twitter; pretty amazing, really.

from Alert Thingy
I got an immediate followback as well-- Lee, great to hear he is genuinely on the service.
- Doug Haslam
from twhirl
Rep. Culberson and I don't agree politically, but it was civil and it was a real conversation - a couple of people DMd me and said 'wow! this is cool!'. Tim Ryan is a Congressman, also on Twitter - but he follows nobody.
- Lee Stranahan
from Alert Thingy
I disagree with just about all of his politics, but I love his twitter gumption. :) Go Culbertson!
- Jarrod Morgenstern
Removed due to insanity, more like. Glad I was on FF and got to see it b4 it was removed. Actually: I'm not sure I should be so glad. Some things are better kept under the rug.
- Alex von Halem
Goes to show: you can't remove something from the internet. If you act like a douche in front of a camera, you're going to have to live with it. Thanks for the laughs, Bill.
- ben bloch
It's made it less relevant for me. By the time I get to a story in Greader, it's already been shared several times over in Friendfeed. I mainly use Greader to bookmark stories for later now.
- Mark Trapp
I'm neutral on this one, Steve. My Google Reader habits haven't changed since I started using FriendFeed.
- Bryan Person
I haven't found enough people yet for it to replace Google Reader. Lots of tech stuff here, but not the spectrum that I subscribe to in Google Reader
- Bwana ☠
It has the same relevance, because it is finely tuned to my likes and dislikes. A social network... even of peers... can never replicate that. So while FF works nicely for breaking news, it won't replace the depth of knowledge I acquire from Reader
- Jamie
less. except your statement presumes that Google Reader was relevant. not.
- dave mcclure
Less for some items discussed by subscirbers and more for topics I am passionate about.
- Gerry Garcia
I might say just a bit, when twitter came along, that's where the news were breaking, the same is with friendfeed maybe even more, but good old reading of feeds is different and still part of the game
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
The same. Google Reader is an essential element of FriendFeed.
- Louis Gray
@Lee I agree re. shared items.@Dave Google Reader is second to Bloglines.
- Steve Rubel
I think it really adds to GReader. I share stuff all the time now with notes and its great to see it get out there and spark some conversation. It's not quite there yet to replace GReader from a usability perspective but if it did get there I would probably switch to it.
- Devlin Dunsmore
from twhirl
FF makes GReader more relevant for me. I see stories here first. I use my reader as a way to catch up on news that I may have missed.
- Alex Williams
I tried to go all FriendFeed, but found I was missing too many stories...so I'm back to using both.
- Chris Rossini
The uses are different. My primary use of Google Reader is to gather together the content I need to read. That doesn't necessarily equate to a need to solicit the reactions of others to that content. FriendFeed is handy if I do feel a need to gather reactions. But I cannot see myself giving up one for the other.
- Jill O'Neill
More relevant and useful. Reader serves as a content delivery system will FF serves as an excellent aggregator and recommendation system.
- Keith - @tsudo
from twhirl
FF will reduce reader usage a but it's not a real feed reader e.g. can't play podcasts
- Adrian
from twhirl
Depends. For me, neither has a significant impact on the other. At least not yet.
- Mike Keliher
I think they are complementary in the sense that some things just don't do well in FriendFeed. I want to be able to read all of my tech news, but the friendfeed river is time-based which makes it more difficult to keep track of.
- Rob Diana
I don't think it makes it less, necessarily. After all, *someone's* got to find a story initially, right?
- Sean Goller
FriendFeed and Twitter have nearly replaced GReader for me. The trusted human filter beats scanning through 100s of posts daily to get to a gem. Hopefully not all will stop using them or the great posts will eventually dry up. Based on other comments here I might cull my subscriptions and then share more. P2P-like over me just taking and taking.
- Jay Gilmore
Less; until Reader becomes as social.
- Stowe Boyd
For my personal workflow, Google Reader feeds my blogs as well as FriendFeed. So I vote for "more." It seems easier to track shared items on Google Reader than liked items on FriendFeed.
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
FriendFeed is very useful, but in a very different way than Google Reader. I need both.
- ron k jeffries
because of FF, I have LESS TIME for my RSS reader :-)
- Thomas Ho
from fftogo
More, for depth (and because FF adds meaning to share). But FF has it for discovery of new stuff.
- Eric Johnson
I almost completly stopped using RSS reader. I use FriendFeed and one custom news page on NetVibes....via feedalizr
- Shahar Nechmad
I don't feel it's made it less relevant, I come across blogs here that I wasn't aware of and add them to my subscriptions there!
- Joe Dawson
I want to be able to mark FF treads and ditch the ones I have viewed. Until then, I have to use my reader.
- morten saxnaes
using both but finding that I'm starting to use Google Reader differently. More like a discovery device by following search-based feeds and then using FriendFeed to follow specific humans.
- Marnie Webb
Google reader is simply another source of data for Friendfeed to aggregate. The environments can exist independent of each other. The wonderful thing about Friendfeed is that you can continue to use all your applications/data sources and have them automatically collected and displayed. Applications such as Flickr, Google Reader, and Youtube have become popular because they are good at doing specific tasks. An aggregator does not make those applications irrelevant.
- Mark Nassal
I still use GR occasionally, but most of my information comes from FF. Digg usage way down too......via feedalizr
- David Sim
I use gReader to follow blogs I can't find in FF. Also as a discovery tool, because sometimes I share stuff from there here. Sometimes directly with gRader and sometimes using the bookmarklet. I'm using it less because of FF, though (I deleted a lot of Tech blogs subscriptions the other day).
- Alejandro
I prefer GReader to FF. It's less cluttered than FF. With FF I check in to see the things I missed in my feeds.
- Snay Trivedi
I primarily use GReader - it's easier to locate information. I just come over to FF to see what "friends" are doing.
- Kim
I agree with Snay and Kim. Comparing the 2 is like apples and oranges unless you simplify the scenario to include only breaking tech news. My scope spans far beyond that and I can't get the health, auto, environment, local, mountain bike and personal blog articles in FF that I subscribe to in GReader. I don't consider it a replacement but another way of getting information.
- Jon West
But what about using imaginary friends to pipe rss feeds in? Doesn't that allow for archiving, searching, and commenting....?
