What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:)
- Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess.
- Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up?
- Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair
- Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :)
- Brian Chang
Andy, the person on the left is Vaughan Smith from Facebook. Sanjeev (the fourth FriendFeed founder) is not pictured because he was boarding an airplane.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, that's so awesome. FB's an awesome company to do business with.
- Jesse Stay
Hey Paul congratulations - FriendFeed has been leading the way since its inception. Are the photos you've posted copy-protected or could I use them in a story on the deal?
- Mitch
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :)
- Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!
- laosan
congratulations! keep the innovation coming...
- ozlubling
VERY happy for you guys. Possibly even owe you one or two. Are we getting FriendPhone next?? Think Mark should seriously think about 'Friendbook' :)
- Charlie Anzman
Congratulations to you and your team.

just showed the pictures to my students and they were like, "they look like normal people!" Congrats on the deal, onward and upward!

Congratulations, Paul -- to you and everybody at FF.

Congrats Paul, Bret and the rest of the team, this is awesome news! The big question on everyone's lips is: Who gets to have http://facebook.com/paul? :)

Congrats, and thanks for taking us all on such a terrific ride! Big ups. :)

I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge?
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they?
- Jesse Stay
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers.
- Steve Gillmor
My comment is because they can see by the flood of responses people are not happy and this post is just a smidge tacky. People are upset and feel betrayed and they haven't addressed that, not that I expected them too. This is pretty much inline with the way they've handled every other major change but before you only had a handful of disgruntles users whereas this time I'd say the majority are upset.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :)
- Chris Loft
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb.
- Derek Coatney
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow.
- Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell.
- Shane Gibbons
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done.
- Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed.

Congrats to the FF staff, but you'll have to pardon my lack of exuberance. I have mental pictures of being forced to use the FB UI and it makes me sad =(

Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now !
- Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely.
- Ovidiu Predescu
NOOOOO! I _LOVE_ friendFeed and this will change it forever. Yeah - this will improve Facebook. Great deal guys - I can not wait to see how this works out
- Ric Johnson
@Scobleizer: Come on you're a genius and can not realize future of FF? Turkey was one of important countries which is using FF! They asked no one about this! We hate fcking morons and stupid people on facebook, and I'm sure that this post will be real, just read it: http://ff.im/6pRmM
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
OK, that's great. I hope you can be successful at Facebook Dev Team and enjoy spending that money.
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
I think you guys don't have a clue what this means. You#re just handed over to some very suspicious gold digger. It's over for Friendfeed.

Not happy happy congrats bullshit from me-I used FF.
- frankiecarl
Frankie, a lot of us use FriendFeed and are concerned about where things are going from here. As I said in my comment above: I'm happy for the staff but displeased with who they chose to sell to. I'm perfectly capable of feeling both emotions at the same time.

These guys represent the most talked about entreprises (Ok even more so by geeks in the case of Friendfeed) and they're still in their 20s. We're talking millions of dollars and look how relax they look and casually they're dressed.

Video of some of the biggest photos you'll ever see: http://blip.tv/file/1913723 Tour of SmugMug's headquarters and look at first SmugMug user group meeting last night.
This is my first video I did with my Canon 5D MKII. Sorry for the bad audio noises here and there. I need to work on my camera technique. It's very hard to focus while doing a video on that camera.
- Robert Scoble
I shot this right before the user group meeting. You see Don MacAskill, CEO of SmugMug and his dad, Chris, talk about the large photos that Chris made. Multi gigapixel photos.
- Robert Scoble
Canon 5D!! That's one of my dream cameras. How would you rate it?a
- Alekkus
That pic is really impressive both because of the shoot but also because of the printing rendering. Would like one like this.
- Pierre Beugnot
That would be a really cool company to work for.
- Jesse Stay
Alekkus: 12 out of 10. Freaking awesome camera. First time I'm getting images off of the sensor that are close to what I want.
- Robert Scoble
I would love to work at SmugMug, sucha cool service and cool people working there
- Bill Pennington
from twhirl
At the Huntington Hotel [http://www.huntingtonhotel.com/] (SF--across the street from Grace Cathedral) there is an amazing panoramic photo set of the Bay area from the late 1800's. No bridges, horses and carriages, sailing ships in the bay, no development in Marin Cty...amazing
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Yeah, there's no doubt about it. I could see the details of the giant photos that you filmed. Awesome!
- Alekkus
Bill: and even better you can walk to friendfeed's headquarters and have lunch with them, too!
- Robert Scoble
Alekkus: I wish I could figure out how to upload this video to SmugMug. Says there's a 512MB limit there. Hmm, gotta talk to Don about that.
- Robert Scoble
Bill: you have lots of competition. They just hired a rocket scientist who built Yahoo News, among other smart people. Don told me he's seeing talent on the street that he never imagined he'd be able to hire.
- Robert Scoble
Nice to see what my SmugMug fees are being spent on.
- Andy Roth
Robert, you should just upload it to Facebook, mark permissions for everybody, and you have full HD. SmugMug's another good alternative - I like Facebook because I can control permissions (like on Family videos and pictures, for instance). I use SmugMug as my archive, and Facebook as my viral sharing tool.
- Jesse Stay
Andy: what I like is they print lots of their customers photos all over the offices too. They also use these images to test printers. Chris knows more about printing than most humans. He talked about how they chose the printers they decided on for their pro service (they had double-blind tests). He showed us some of the tests and that they studied how he can pick prints from some of the photo labs just by looking at them. If you want to know more about how to make your photos better, this is a good group.
- Robert Scoble
Jesse: I shot this one at 640x480 so it's not HD. SmugMug actually lets you upload 1080p videos, but I don't get how they can do that if they only limit you to 512MB. The file sizes on 1080p get ridiculous.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Yeah I know, great companies attract great people and SmugMug is super smart about growth and keeping it small, which is exactly why I want to work for them! Not that I don't love my current job but combining photography with tech would be a dream job!
- Bill Pennington
from twhirl
Rob: I've seen that image, it's mondo cool. Did you know that Ansel Adams did panoramas for Kodak for advertising in Grand Central Station? He built a special tripod to do those. I bet he'd trip out if he saw what was possible now.
- Robert Scoble
Don kinda reminds me of Conan O'Brien
- Daniel Sims
excellent visualization, and decent explanation... but i'm not sure I agree 100% with the explanation. basically, this explanation puts a significant portion of the blame on two factors: 1.) "sub-prime" borrowers defaulting en-masse, and 2.) "prime" borrowers just outright deciding that they're not going to pay their mortgages anymore. I find both of those relatively tough pills to swallow. I think the elephant in the room was the constant artificial inflation of mortgage amounts.
- Chris Hollander
"One of the world’s longest exposures ever. For 6 months between the winter and summer solstice, Justin Quinnell left open his homemade pinhole camera. The lowest arc shows the first day of exposure on the winter solstice, the top curves were captured in the middle of summer."

Impressive. Wonder how he managed not to get a completely white photo.

Ryo: the paper isn't developed. Over extended periods of time the sunlight etches an image into the emulsion of the paper, discoloring it. The discolorations are scanned in, and you get your negative. There is no developing step.
- Gabe
At least one of my neighbors doesn't like photography very much -- they called the police! The police were nice enough though. I suspect that it was the guy who stopped to ask me what I was taking pictures of (leaves and junk), and then asked if I was doing this for Google.
Apparently he doesn't like "street view" very much. (I wasn't wearing Google clothes or anything -- it was totally random) The police said that people are worried about robbers, and I guess the 5d is what many people imagiine a robber would use to "case the joint" :)
- Paul Buchheit
what a strange person. does he where a tin foil hat??
- Terry O'Fee
wow, didn't realize this sort of thing happened to white folks -- and to think, Obama hasn't even been sworn in yet! </joke> Paul, maybe they Googled you? "What did you say your name was?" [type type type type] "Are you doing this for Google?" :-D
- Karim
OMG how lame... and I thought my neighbors were weird...gees that is BAD. I feel for you guys... "for Google" ROFLMAO!! yeah right! Some people just don't get photography do they? Maybe show them your photos and they *might* get it?? sigh
- Susan Beebe
I can't find a "fear of photography" on http://phobialist.com , but there is Photoaugliaphobia "the fear of of glaring lights". Did you happen to be using a large flash attachment?
- Micah Wittman
Remember, the next time this happens, your name is Thomas Hawk, and you're just following orders from Scoble.
- Karim
Gee, when people don't like my photography they just tell me my color balance is off, or I'm not positioning subjects with the rule of threes when I should. Nobody's called the police yet.
- Bruce Lewis
Gabe, they didn't know that it was my own neighborhood :). Brian, I don't recall the exact wording, just that the neighbors were scared.
- Paul Buchheit
Goofy neighbors, really. I guess I should be glad I was a bit cautious about photographing horse farms from the road while out on rides. I suspected people were paranoid goofballs.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
"Well, excuse me! I was just taking pictures about your shower curtain for my Flickr set, not about you! Btw, better rinse that shampoo off now."
- Jemm
Further evidence that anybody who does a lot of photography will get into a lot of altercations; it doesn't require being conspicuous or agressive.
- Gabe
I worry about my daughter since she does "night photography" sometimes. She has been caught and given some funny looks, but so far nobody has called the cops on her, thankfully. I know if I saw someone laying down on my front lawn scooting herself under my decorated tree in front of my house, I certainly would call the cops.
- April Russo (app103)
Paul, when the guy stopped to ask you what you were taking photos of, you didn't tell him you live in the neighborhood?
- Gabe
Nice writeup and very true! Trying to balance many things while trying to drive one challenge ahead just leads to being completely unsatisfied with nearly everything.
- Arnd Gronenberg
key quote "Getting out of balance, gives you the momentum to set a new balancing point for life" with change, life will always feel unbalanced.
- Brad Coy
I've often wondered about this tension, only I phrase it more as contentment. How does one reconcile being content with what one has when those who really make a difference are the ones who constantly thirst for more? I find the lack of common ground between the two to be very... unsettling to say the least.
- David Wynn
from fftogo
In my opinion, there is the healthy and the unhealthy. Being present or content with where you are at and what you "have" can exist while still being engaged in being productive towards a goal (this would be healthy.) Never being satisfied and trying to fill a void for ego's sake can be very unhealthy. Unfortunately, the later is one that I witness far to often.
- Brad Coy
“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

I've always wondered, how does Yahoo compute temperatures as "High: 51°, Low: 49°, (Current:) 41°"? Shouldn't current always be in the range [high, low]? (And shouldn't current in San Francisco be higher than this?)
Yahoo's weather source also does not distinguish between many cities in the bay area ignoring the micro climates that require you to add or subtract a sweater or rain jacket when you travel between different sides of the bay.
- Bill Strathearn
Google weather will do the same thing. I always assumed it was just data pass-through from a forecast computed independently of a current temperature measurement. (And in the case of SF, the forecast might be predicting some sort of overall average temperature, vs. whatever specific thermometer is providing the current measurement.)
- ⓞnor
I believe High and Low are National Weather Service forecast, while the current is actual. Sometimes the automated feed fails to update, and an old forecast gets reported.
- John Lam
@John: That makes the most sense of any explanation I've heard. This has always kind of driven me crazy -- wouldn't it just make sense to normalize these before display, as in "T is not in the range [low, high], so let's just expand low or high to fit"?
- Joel Webber
It might be worth knowing that the forecast has turned out to be totally wrong, so you can change your expectations accordingly.
- ⓞnor
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" -- not actually Mark Twain, but funny nonetheless.

Bruce: the one on the web page is Flash. Can you download the video and try it from there?
- Robert Scoble
I don't even see a video on the web page. I downloaded the mp4 and Ubuntu said it needed "bad" codecs for it. Then it played, but very slowly and without sound.
- Bruce Lewis
Bruce: bummer. I wonder what kind of codecs it needs. We're doing pretty standard stuff and created these with FinalCutPro.

I told my manager to reach out to Pastor Warren and say "In the spirit of unity I would like to talk to him." They gave him my phone number. On the day of the conference I received a call from Pastor Rick, and before I could say anything, he told me what a fan he was. He had most of my albums from the very first one. What? This didn't sound like a gay hater, much less a preacher. He explained in very thoughtful words that as a Christian he believed in equal rights for everyone. He believed every loving relationship should have equal protection.

He struggled with proposition 8 because he didn't want to see marriage redefined as anything other than between a man and a woman. He said he regretted his choice of words in his video message to his congregation about proposition 8 when he mentioned pedophiles and those who commit incest. He said that in no way, is that how he thought about gays. He invited me to his church, I invited him to my home to meet my wife and kids. He told me of his wife's struggle with breast cancer just a year before mine.
