CPU-Assisted GPGPU on Fused CPU-GPU Architectures: http://news.ncsu.edu/release...
In other words, CPUs and GPUs fetch data from off-chip main memory at approximately the same speed, but GPUs can execute the functions that use that data more quickly. So, if a CPU determines what data a GPU will need in advance, and fetches it from off-chip main memory, that allows the GPU to focus on executing the functions themselves – and the overall process takes less time. In preliminary testing, Zhou’s team found that its new approach improved fused processor performance by an average of 21.4 percent. - Fritz

Understanding the bin sbin usr/bin usr/sbin split: http://lists.busybox.net/piperma...
You know how Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie created Unix on a PDP-7 in 1969? Well around 1971 they upgraded to a PDP-11 with a pair of RK05 disk packs (1.5 megabytes each) for storage. When the operating system grew too big to fit on the first RK05 disk pack (their root filesystem) they let it leak into the second one, which is where all the user home directories lived (which is why the mount was called /usr). - Fritz
LiMux project exceeds annual target: http://www.h-online.com/open...
To date in 2011, the project has migrated 9,000 systems; it had originally planned to migrate 8,500 of the 12,000-15,000 PC workstations used by city officials in Munich. - Fritz
The ICE numbers aren’t complete accounts, but they met the traditional definition of “commercial” copyright infringement that justified the criminal charge (US District Court Case # 10-2822). What they don’t do is describe a very lucrative or, in any other respects, criminal business. - Fritz
ReFS coming to Windows 8: http://blogs.msdn.com/b...
ReFS, (which stands for Resilient File System), is built on the foundations of NTFS, so it maintains crucial compatibility while at the same time it has been architected and engineered for a new generation of storage technologies and scenarios. - Fritz
dropping compression, quotas and hardlinks? seriously? We are in 2012 and btrfs is becoming the default in Fedora and Ubuntu. I was hoping to see MS drop the NTFS compatibility, and although they say that they have not done that, all evidence says otherwise. You can't boot from ReFS in Win8, it does not support quotas, compression or hardlinks, and NTFS can't be upgraded to it. So... what exactly have they kept compatible, considering that those are the only useful higher-level fs features in NTFS? - horza
The CPU design firm Venray Technology announced a new product design this week that it claims can deliver enormous performance benefits by combining CPU and DRAM on to a single piece of silicon. We spent some time earlier this fall discussing the new TOMI (Thread Optimized Multiprocessor) with company CTO Russell Fish, but while the idea is interesting; its presentation is marred by crazy conceptualizing and deeply suspect analytics. - Fritz

We are watching political movements of enormous value, capable of transforming the lives of hundreds of millions of people, resting on a fragile basis — like, for example, the courage of Mr. Zuckerberg, or the willingness of Google to resist the state, where the state is a powerful business partner and a party Google cannot afford frequently to insult. The technologies are too centralized, too vulnerable to state retaliation and control. We need to fix this. We need to fix it quickly. - Fritz

Database is the bottleneck of most of applications. OrientDB scales out very well on a single machine. A single server makes the work of about 125 servers running MySQL. The transactional engine can run in distributed systems supporting up to 9.223.372.036 Billions of records for the maximum capacity of 19.807.040.628.566.084 Terabytes of data distributed on multiple disks in multiple nodes. OrientDB is totally written in Java and can run in any platform without configuration and installation. The full Server distribution is about 1Mb. - Fritz

GoDaddy ispao prvo pizda pa onda ljiga: http://www.osnews.com/story...
Yesterday, it was revealed GoDaddy actively supported SOPA - to the point of arrogance and dedain towards those opposing the US censorship law. As a result, a boycott was instated on reddit, which was picked up all over the web. Today, the company rescinded its support for SOPA - but for some high-profile clients, it's too late. I thought BSD was going to take over the world. It was a mature and stable system. I didn't see any point in competing with it, so I focused MINIX on education. Four of the BSD guys had just formed a company to sell BSD commercially. They even had a nice phone number: 1-800-ITS-UNIX. AT&T sued them over the phone number and the lawsuit took 3 years to settle. That was precisely the... more... - Fritz
Android is only popular on phones and tablets. Nobody is controlling his car, aircraft, or MRI scanner using it. Also noteworthy is that Google and others are putting a huge effort to remove much of the code from the Linux kernel and replace it with BSD code in userland, both to make it simpler and get rid of the GPL. We are 5 years ahead on this. - Fritz

Opera Mini under Windows: http://www.techimo.com/forum...
Opera Mini is essentially an user interface. Much of the actual processing is done via Opera's intermediate servers, with content optimized and compressed on the back-end for delivery over the Internet to the Opera Mini front-end. Opera Mini can also provide a rather nice alternative web browser in bandwidth-limited situations, such as using a dialup connection, since Opera's intermediate servers optimize and compress content. - Fritz
