Almost nobody understood my earlier webapp idea, so I'll try again. Imagine you were looking at a website such as FriendFeed and you wanted to create a near pixel-perfect copy but in a way that you could move things around, adjust shadows, etc. I want a tool that makes that easy.

And without taking screenshots or copying the html, since the point is that it should have the power to quickly create something that looks just like our current ui. Also, it should be web based, because then fonts, etc will be right, and also I hate installing things. My previous attempt at explaining this: http://friendfeed.com/e... (Balsamiq is not what I want). It does not need to produce html though, so it can cheat anyway it likes.

Paul, I like the idea, it's got merit. There's plenty of tools that do half the job, that is, snip the page. The second part, i'm not overly familiar with the tools out there. The manipulation. I guess you could snip the page, and embed into your tool a js library, like scriptaculous, and attach special event significance to the controls/tags, for moving, dropping, dragging.

It seems to me like you want the Visual Studio Win Forms designer for web apps hosted and served to designers as a web app. Drag and drop elements onto the page and adjust their properties in a property grid. Then send a link to others so you can share your concept.

For this, I use simple vector graphics editing app, like Xara or InkScape - I just make screenshots and use them as raw building blocks - usually I cut out from them small elements like controls/text-blocks/images/etc... In vector graphics enironment managing such kind of blocks is much more easier than in photoshop.

Paul, i think the edit-page command on ubiquity with the ability to: visually edit css and publish the changes is close to what you are describing.

Eric pretty much nailed the description of the dream tool that I think Paul was asking for. In my dream the web app is truly collaborative and has an active GUI. So you can adjust those properties using a mouse or tablet and anyone else on your design team can watch as you do it so they can make suggestions and modifications as you work.

Let's say you want to make a mockup of FriendFeed called "FriendFood". You want it to generally have the same layout, only the top blue bar will actually have a background made of lasagna and a font that is made of French fries, and what shows on the page is everything people write about food on the regular FF, like "pasta OR bean OR potato OR steak". But you'd like someone to be able to do that from the web and without messing into much coding. Is that it?

So something with the usability of say, omnigraffle, but that only used webkit for its rendering. With text controlled and positioned by actual css so that line spacing etc were correct, although again with a simpler UI than CSS has.

One quick tip in Photoshop is to turn off anti-aliasing and use your various web fonts (Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, etc.) and use your preferred font size in pixels/points... This will provide you with screen accurate font appearances and sizes. The biggest problem with a "pixel-perfect" browser rendering is that it will never be consistent from browser to browser. I tend to agree. But I read through and was trying to glean when the exit for the VC would be; after how many years? According to my calculations, asset value growth of over 30% per year still means a 13 year wait on an initial investment of $1 million to walk away with $25 million.

here's a few more stretches now that i'm on a laptop & not my iphone - 1) revenue in 6 months along w/ selling into enterprise is a challenge since enterprise sales cycles are notoriously long for any company let alone an unproven startup 2) integrates easily in an enterprise space is an oxymoron - again, its a good post and not all things stated are stretches (plus it is his fund so his call)...

Andrew/Gregory, I actually clarified this in another comment thread. What I mean is that it takes no more than $1-$2 million to know if you've got a $25-$50 million business. I take lots of risk. I just want to make sure the business doesn't require loads of capital to know whether or not it is likely to get the traction required to be successful. It may well make sense to raise an additional $2-$3 million in a Series A to help the company execute its growth plan, and I'm ok with that.

Jesse, absolutely, I wrote realtime track stuff for identi.ca (and any other microblog instance that wants it), and kshep and I have been running a friendfeed based IM service longer than ff has (and I still think ours is better). (BTW, my realtime APIs for friendfeed and twitter are both open source and I provide xmpp pubsub for laconica instances).

last.fm is still my favorite. but i use blip.fm and hypem.com as well and scrobble to last.fm. in fact i use anything that will scrobble to last.fm.

Zee - I use blip nearly every day. It's awesome. It integrates seeqpod (I think) and you "blip" (like tweet) songs with a little message too. The interface lets you listen to all tracks in a similar way to favtape.

Last.fm is my favorite for keeping track of my friends' listening habits, music discovery and listening to internet radio, but I love blip.fm for giving me a way to tweet and ff out what i'm listening to and to instantly hear what my friends are listening to.

Last.fm tracks my listening habits. blip.fm allows me to pull up any song I'm thinking of and post it somewhere. You can also create a playlist. And it all (for the most part) can be made part of your last.fm stats via the aforementioned scrobbling functions.

before blip.fm i used twittytunes (i still use it), it's a firefox addon. while i'm listening to itunes and scrobbling to last.fm, i can send a tweet of what i'm listening to with twittytunes. i think bc of this blip.fm hasn't wowed me yet, other than being able to listen to friends' playlists.

I like Blip, but haven't been as active on it as I used to be. I would lose followers whenever I blipped more than 3 times in a day. They need to beef up their selection. You used to be able to add your own stuff easily, but there are restrictions now.

Could you elaborate Jeppe? Blip is just a search engine. None of the music resides on their servers, it just streams MP3 it finds on the net. Some (many?) of those servers are not very reliable.

This is a little crass, but... I think that a lot of the crazy anger towards Michael Arrington comes from failing entrepreneurs who feel that he is "cockblocking" their startup. This stems from the misguided belief that getting on TechCrunch is necessary or sufficient for success.

The most vile frustration with Mike no doubt comes from some entrepreneurs that haven't been successful. I'd also believe you have some jealousy/frustration from other bloggers who don't think it is an even landscape for opportunity, and, as with YouTube, as you get deeper into the general populace, quality of comments gets extremely poor. The only interactions I've had with Mike in person, phone and e-mail were good. But he is very competitive and people can react badly to that.

Too many people, when life hands them crap, look around for someone to blame. Too many people give the internet too much credit. Also, this is the downside of celebrity. Celebrity is relative, and Mike is somewhat of a celebrity to the online startup crowd. It often pays to be unnoticed and under the radar. It sucks to be the target of hostility, unless you've earned it like Chaney or Madoff.

Paul - totally agree with you. All the hate, drivel and trash mouth comes from folks who don't cut the mustard with Mike. They're all angry, upset and act like a bunch of fools, which actually further validates Mike's assessment against them. TC is a nice endorsement, when warranted, but is NOT necessary for a tech startup to succeed. TC / Arrington is NOT the only avenue for publicity / promotion of a product / service.

I think Mike A. as usual is ahead of the trend... and 2009 will be the year where all of the openess and "putting yourself out there" gets a major reality check - via public online scandals (and lets hope not but I fear so tragedies) that are outcomes of us putting ourselves "out there" in a broader society that hasn't quite evolved to the level of the sometimes tough but always civil and never threatening industry insider valley/bay crowd.

Paul, we discussed the rising "celebrity" of the new tech leaders like you on our music and tech. talkcast. For most of my life I've dealt with celebs who must try to make sense of the fringe anger that is often directed at public figures. While it's wonderful to put a face on the code, it comes with some baggage. My heart really hurts for Michael and his family, regardless of what some may feel about him, the threats to visible personalities are an unfortunate reality.

I agree. If Arrington won't write about a startup on launch, then he'll write about it when it has gotten some traction. If you can't get traction without Techcrunch, there's something missing in your growth model. Big reporting upfront only helps to get a fast start. I don't think Techcrunch can't make or break anything.

It's difficult for me to believe that all the angry comments on TC (which are usually directed at the startup getting covered) are somehow the fault of other blogs.

If you're spending time worrying about "What TechCrunch thinks", you're in the wrong business. Startups should care about what their customers think, not Arrington. Plus - just write a decent business plan, with some real revenue sources in it. You will get more benefit from that than a million blog posts.

I am always shocked at the rudeness and bad spirit of the comments on blogs such as TC but also on Digg posts. For that reason I have stopped reading comments on those blogs. Comments and discussions on friendfeed however are of much higher quality. People typically do not insult each other here. I like it this way. Hope it stays this way.

I think Arrington has an amazing blog but a crappy personality. OF course, he blocked me on Twitter for saying he shouldn't put photoshopped crap on his blog with a news story. I expected better of him than your average fanboy blog. I'm not an entrepreneur wanting his attention, I just wanted to give some (maybe snarky) constructive criticism. Good catch, paula and I don't put anything valuable on there...but they can have my stupid pictures and soccer club meeting minutes and field schedules if they want...I'd love to see them try to sell that stuff! But if you're dropping your banking files and social security number into the cloud, then you deserve to get punked, IMHO...just be smart about what you store...

The final episode of Season 1, with the Johnny Cash song "The Man Comes Around", had some of the best pieces of story-telling I'd ever seen. Specifically, the segment where the song is playing, and the FBI are heading up to and into the room where the machine is. Then the aftermath. Fantastic stuff.

Well, BSG is pretty damn good, too. It's different from Firefly. Not as funny, but in terms of long-term arc, one of the best shows out there. I'd definitely give it a chance, Nathan, but watch it in order.

If you get the Season One DVDs, you'll be fine. There's a miniseries first, but it's Disc 1 of the Season One DVD set. There's also another miniseries called "Razor" that goes between S3 and S4. It's on its own DVD, so when you get there, you'll have to buy/Netflix it separately. (Actually, the S4 DVDs aren't out yet, so it may be included in that set; I don't know how they'll package it.)

I don't see anything in GButts that the toolbar can't do with a few additional buttons. The advantage of GButts is that you have buttons for all Google services conveniently in one place and don't need to go hunting for more buttons when you want to add additional services to a toolbar.

Lots of reasons to use it. For one, real time collaboration, which is killer. Documents that always stay in sync between PC's. No emailing attachments to yourself, or to other people.

You can do collaboration with lots of tools. I use Subversion. I don't want to edit my docs with a web browser and have Google tell me what kind of documents I can edit.

Peter, because if I use Google Docs then for about 80% of my document needs (and 100% of non-work related document needs) I don't have to have Office installed on my machine. That's nice. I love Subversion and use it myself for most of my projects but I wouldn't expect everyone to have it or know how to use it that I might want to collaborate with.

Wow, I quit using this almost as quickly as I set it up after their TC win last year. Took forever (weeks) to actually get my bank loaded and recognized, and even then it was goofy, and my bank actually started restricting my own bank-site logins because they were getting hammered by Mint's scraper and afraid they or I were being targeted for ID theft/hacks. Not too keen on spreading that kind of data around online anyway...so I'm still stuck (and relatively happy) with Quicken. Doubt I'll try Mint again.
