The real import of this story is that an Arab country (instead of the US, or Russia) seized the ship - good diplomatic work by someone, somewhere.

How is the value of the dollar decreasing though? It has been doing rather well against world currencies of late and for people like Anthony who kept their money on the sidelines instead of buying in to the real estate market, they suddenly find their dollars to be a lot more powerful.

Depends upon the target. VisualStudio is awesome for any .NET development. For script editing in a multitude of languages such as powershell and vbscript I would go with PrimalScript. For front-end web development you can't beat Aptana (Eclipse based).

Sean: so far the signal to noise ratio is much like my lists on FriendFeed. I like FriendFeed better, but there are quite a few people who aren't yet on FriendFeed. The thing is, though, most people aren't on Twitter, either. They don't watch their accounts very closely and/or they don't act on them if they do.

Another interesting experiment would be to allow anyone in who wanted to but to screen people before hand to make sure they weren't spammer, etc. You could create an account of tech-savy people that you could draw news from and do experiments with. Like a twitter that actually knew what they were talking about.

@A.T From what i'm aware of most of the claims were within the rules of expenses(as crazy as they were) but the police are investigating people who deliberatly misled the expenses office, such as the claims for phony loans/mortgages and council tax overpayments.

It is less dangerous and spreads less easily than the normal flu. The symptoms of it are less sever than the normal flu. In the US, 70,000 people are going to die this year of the normal flu, while this has killed maybe 20.

Personally, I've assumed the latter and thus have avoided tweeting a link to every new post of mine on my blog. But I'm noticing that the former seems to be the norm... and if people really appreciate such notifications (maybe they don't use a feed reader?) then I'm happy to accommodate.

For me, it's really easy for me to unfollow people who fill their twitter stream with redundant information. FriendFeed aggregates RSS feeds, if I really wanted that.

I don't mind it at all. I have some friends who have set their blogs to auto-tweet whenever they have a new entry but also use twitter for comments and @replies. It is just one of many different pieces of content and, since it is under 140 characters, easy to ignore in its redundancy with my GReader. I say go for it!

I have smartphone tracker on mine http://smartphonetracker.blogspot.com/ , sits in the background quietly, can send co-ords via sms/email, silent sms location trigger (if your phone gets stolen, send a text message and it'll mail/sms where it is) sends out a google maps link too with the co-ords :) also does things like send out message when sim card is replaced, well worth the install

For unleaded 95 octane in Norway it´s NOK 12.83 *per litre* which is about USD 7.608 per gallon. Shocking ? :) Diesel (which my family uses) is a bit cheaper. Strangely expensive perhaps, but it´s all environmental taxes because we drill it up just outside our shores and refine it ourselves. (Besides it´s obviously impossible to compare the prices just by themselves across borders).

Putting aggregated finances online at all (or even sharing financial information with a 3rd-party when not absolutely necessary) is not something I would ever do.

Mint only shows you what has actually passed through your accounts; it's great for tracking your spending. However, it's awful for money management because it doesn't know anything about checks, etc., that haven't cleared yet or are scheduled in advance. I use both; Quicken for money management, and mint for budgeting/tracking across multiple accounts.

Do you mean just for basic budgeting using Quicken online (a more direct comparison to Mint.com) or for detailed and useful information such as Quicken Home? I use Quicken online to track my banking (went bills are due, what has cleared) but I use Quicken Home & Business for the larger scope of my finances (taxes, business, mortgage). Mint.com doesn't hold a candle to either, from my experience.

Oh they axed it? Wow, I didn't know that. I liked Money a long time ago because the UI was more modern than Quicken's but Quicken has come along way while I've since gotten over liking what is essentially a browser for a UI.

I use Mint because I don't use checks at all. Everything I do is either debit card or cash. However, the one thing about Mint is that debit transactions (and withdrawals) take time to clear (less than checks, but they are not instantaneous)

Rob, I continued with the plan I had (here in Canada) which I started with a plain ol' SIM-based cell phone. I don't have iphone-specific functionality (like visual voicemail) or internet access via cell network, so I just use wifi for email/browsing. It's a 1st gen iphone.

No iphone. Verizon is way better than AT&T for me. I tried AT&T for 6 months (family plan with my brother) and it was way worse in my travel areas. Doesn't work in my parent's house in Ohio. Drops more calls (and delivers voice-mails late) about 10X as often as Verizon. On the other hand, if I lived in Fairfax, CA, I'd have to have AT&T, since Verizon is poor in north Marin.

Nope! I don't have one and don't want one. My WindowsMobile based HTC Touch Pro has a full keyboard, has less restrictions (totally open system), and has more features. Also, I use Sprint which has faster data speeds anyway, and since I'm on the grandfathered SERO program, I only pay $30/mo for unlimited EVERYTHING. most of my iphone buddies pay at least TRIPLE THAT every month. hahaha, suckers!

What's the best place to upload longer videos? YouTube has a 10 minute limit. Google Video no longer accepts new video submissions. Vimeo has a monthly bandwidth limit (but I"m thinking of paying for premium service). Any good quality services without these problems?

David: Thanks. They've made Director's accounts gradually harder and harder to get, I'd guess because of problems with piracy. A couple of years back, all you had to do was apply (wish I had). Things gradually tightened up, and when I looked into it a couple of months back, I couldn't see any way I could get such an account. If you know how, I'd be delighted to hear!

Louis, what do you think about what Jason said? I agree that when I see a good tweet I want to re-treat it for others and myself also(to keep it). I've also met ppl by RTing and others have called my attention by RTing my tweets. Maybe ppl should just think for a few seconds before clicking the send key. I RT good stuff and if there were no RT's I'd have to research more. We're not all writers like you Louis :))

RTing shares tweets that you found interesting but that your followers may not have read, it doesn't add to the number of useless tweets or "noise" as the bloggers seems to think. You can even filter out any tweet with "RT" if you're using TweetDeck (other clients probably have this feature too) if you really don't want to see them.
