"ATLANTA – A new program to inform building owners and operators, tenants and prospective buyers on the energy use of buildings, similar to a nutrition label on food or miles per gallon ratings on cars, was launched to encourage the building industry to find ways to cut energy use and costs. The Building Energy Quotient program, which will be known as Building EQ, will include both As Designed (asset) and In Operation (as operated) ratings for all building types, except residential. It also will provide a detailed certificate with data on actual energy use, energy demand profiles, indoor air quality and other information that will enable building owners to evaluate and reduce their building’s energy use. The program is administered by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)."

"Aral Sea Rebirth? Thursday October 29, 2009 The Aral Sea, located on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan might not be dying as quickly as it once was and might even be coming back to life. Kazakhstan built a dam to divert the water of the Syr Darya river into the portion of the Aral Sea located in Kazakhstan. Thus, the fishing industry along with ecosystems based on the Aral Sea are seeing some signs of recovery. It's a great story of what was once the world's fourth largest lake (and now isn't even in the top ten). The Associated Press has a fantastic story on the rebirth of the Aral Sea."

"Despite a worldwide effort to cut the number of hungry people around the world, as part of the Millennium Development Goals, the number of hungry people worldwide rose more than 100 million to 1.02 billion people. Thus, more than one in seven people on the planet have serious food security issues. According to researchers, food production needs to be increased by 50% to meet the needs of the growing global population. I am a bit surprised by this fact as I had long been of the understanding that food distribution, and not production, was the issue"

"I had been tracking Google PowerMeter, a Google initiative that lets people monitor their energy usage online, but it was only available to customers of electric providers who were using so-called "Smart Meters". Smart Meters send usage data back to the provider, and PSNH isn't one of them. Then, this week, Google announced on their blog that normal mortals could now order a device called The Energy Detective (or TED, as he's known by his friends...) TED is made by Energy, Inc. out of South Carolina, and consists of a minimum of two components. The first piece is an inductive current measuring device that lives out in your circuit breaker box. The second is a gateway device that plugs into a wall socket and has an Ethernet jack. Optionally, you can also get a stand-alone display, so that you don't need a computer to view your usage."

WOW! this is amazing! "Indoor Autonomous Mapping and Navigation The movie below details the work led by Nick Roy at the Robust Robotics Group at CSAIL, MIT. It is extremely impressive, while a little scary at the same time, note the real-time mapping and 3D model production as the helicopter scans the environment: You can find out more about the research and the robotics group in general at http://groups.csail.mit.edu/rrg..."

"Over the last year I’ve been to many geo-conferences, and been privileged enough to speak at most of them. However, I think that there is something amiss in the current conference landscape. To quote Mark Frost in Fortune Magazine… We’ve all been there: the dull business conference. A half-empty room of half-asleep attendees answer their e-mail on laptops and BlackBerries, while some hapless speaker lumbers through a PowerPoint speech."

"Flickr just announced support for OpenStreetMap, the wiki-like mapping service that allows users to create and edit maps. Starting today, photos that are tagged with an OpenStreetMap node ID will include a link to OpenStreetMap (OSM) right underneath the photo. OSM assigns a random number to objects on its maps and Flickr can now read this number and also extract additional data about places from the OSM database. In addition, Flickr also announced that it will now support venue ID tags for the increasingly popular Foursquare service."

"The MBTA began a two-year effort this morning to upgrade its rapid transit maps -- known as spider maps -- in its stations, along with some neighborhood maps that haven't been upgraded in more than 40 years. The new spider maps show 15 key bus routes, for the first time, along with subway lines, commuter rail lines, and the Silver Line enhanced bus service. The first map went up today in Government Center station. Eventually, the new maps will go up in every subway, commuter rail stop, trolley stop, and bus terminal. Smaller maps with a few less details will go up in subways and trains."
