So... Person A hypes Flipboard like mad. They have trouble scaling. It's a free app. They make no money. Person B highlights Friendly, a $5 iPad Facebook app. It's in the top 15 grossing iPad apps, selling thousands a day. What was the better launch?
Continued: Flipboard raised $10M to launch a free ad-supported product. Friendly raised $0 to launch a product that is making thousands a day. What was the better investment? - Louis Gray
More on Friendly's success here: http://blog.louisgray.com/2010... - Louis Gray
Dude, are you competing with my brother? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Who? (BTW - the results show there is no competition, only dominance) - Louis Gray
Yeah, but why compete at all? Why not just do your thing and enjoy your successes? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Hi Alex. Let it go dude. - Louis Gray
Let what go? I don't have an axe to grind, hehe...It doesn't affect my livelihood at all if you mop the floor with the blood of my brother. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Good. It'll go nicely next to my BMW. - Louis Gray
Oh snap! - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Who is Person A..... - Liza + = ?
Robert Scoble, I presume. :) - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Oh great. Now the vanity filters are in effect. Delete delete delete. - Louis Gray
Sorry I asked - I was kidding around, not stirring up trouble. - Liza + = ?
Let's diffuse, Who is John Galt? Who is Robert Scoble? - Liza + = ?
Whooo that is great ---- A = hype and good looks and good prospect for future --- B = niche, a sound business if they are making 1000's day already --- a small start up with no visibility and not known people on it -- not much funding either --- I would go for B - definitely --- and then with that business to show I could then get to A level and get that nice 10M$ funding -- - TechFuga
Or make sure it scales before hyping it????? - Liza + = ?
Friendly is great. Flipboard is poor. - Thomas Power
Liza: 20x more people showed up than Flipboard expected. I guess they should have charged $5 for their app, then that problem would have been solved. - Robert Scoble
Thomas: I just bought Friendly and I want my money back. It's no where near as revolutionary as Flipboard. Nice that they are making money, though. Demonstrates the hunger for a better Facebook app. - Robert Scoble
So Louis.Following on from Robert's point above, you're missing one thing: how much people actually like it. Numbers don't tell the whole story. - Roberto Bonini
I heard about Flipboard one at least 15 different blogs, 3 podcasts, Andy Ihnatko is writing a review for the Chicago Sun Times, celebs like Alyssa Milano are tweeting about it and the YouTube video was genius. I only heard about Friendly on your blog... - Johnny
... And none of them was Robert Scoble... - Johnny
Thousands of people paying 5 bucks for a facebook app? Who are those people and where can i find them? And if iPad blows at mere browsing, what's the point of using it? - xixixix
You don't know how good an investment is until you cash out. Flipboard is not cashing out yet. - Bruce Lewis
@Liza - Robert Scoble is a tech blogger who used to be very active here once. He left after the FB buyout citing FFs imminent collapse and lack of activity. You can find him over at GoogleBuzz, he stands out quite a bit because he's the guy with the place all to himself. - JSLeFanu
I should check in here more often. Sometimes there are still threads full of win. - DGentry
@JSLeFanu that was awesome! - xixixix
Careful now @xixixix keep giving me compliments like that and I'll end up with an ego the size of Robert Scoble's and that wouldn't do; I'd be needing a social network all to myself as well then. ;-) - JSLeFanu
Going off on a complete tangent, any other opinions besides JSLeFanu on what is the actual state of Buzz these days? When I wander over there I mostly don't like the stuff in my stream, so I quickly lose interest. Not sure if its Buzz, in general. or just my stream needs more effort. FF best of the day rules compared to my current Buzz stream. Also weighing if I should spend the time to figure out the Buzz API to add it to my feed reader. FF API also appears vastly better and easier. - Ed Millard
Buzz is not dead. Let Louis keep an eye on it and update us as it progresses. My complaints from February are still not addressed. - Bruce Lewis
has Robert commented on the 'legal issues' wrt licensing/copyright/scraping/etc in flipboard? i made a comment on his recent buzz and he's responded to just about every other comment/question except mine asking his thoughts on those issues - Chris Heath
Robert: why am I getting called out for trying to diffuse the situation w/ humor? You know that I know who you are, so I thought the John Galt thing was funny, but maybe you are reading into the politics of it. - Liza + = ?
and re: his response to you liza - if they did charge for flipboard then there most certainly would be 'legal issues' - Chris Heath
My apologies to Louis for mentioning my brother by name. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Why the response to me? I wasn't commenting on the darn thing. - Liza + = ?
Again, I blame Alex. - Liza + = ?
Everything is Alex's fault. Period. - Liza + = ?
Or maybe Alex is John Galt. - Liza + = ?
Geek comedy by Gray and Scoble, with a cameo appearance by the other Scoble, playing himself! Thank you, Liza, for pulling the players together. ;-) - Auntie Buttinsky Botts
OMG! Scobleizer logged into FriendFeed and commented in this posted. And I thought FriendFeed was dead. I also blame it on Alex :) - imabonehead
Say what you want, but I wish R. Scoble would hang around here more. He was fun. I appreciate that LG is still coming here. He is a strong voice. - Eric
Thanks, Eric. I can't quit you. - Louis Gray
SOMEONE HERE SPEAKS THE TRUTH - I like big Botts
:) - Eric
Mary - thanks, but I did not bring the Scobles into the convo, Louis did. Nevertheless, Robert responds to me? Maybe he meant to type "Louis" not "Liza"? - Liza + = ?
GLEN - Who? - Liza + = ?
Damned if I know. - I like big Botts
Ha, best answer possible. - Liza + = ?

I just love how some people have joined, completely ignoring the description of the group and showing the type of people they really are. I don't *love* the changes, but I will get used to them and someday soon I will not even remember the old way it was done. Change is good... long live change! - travispuk

"PhotoSketch is an internet-based program that can take the rough, labeled sketch on the left and automagically turn it into the naff montage on the right." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
Wow, that is awesome. The authors list cracked me up: "Tao Chen, Ming-Ming Cheng, Ping Tan, Ariel Shamir, and Shi-Min Hu". One of these things is not like the others. - Jim Norris

WordPress Just Made Millions of Blogs Real-Time With RSSCloud http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...
This definitely puts the nail in the coffin of the "RSS is dead" contentious debate. Now we can focus on innovations in-and-around RSS. (In response to the Google Reader question, I think that Google will use their HubPubSubHubb in conjunction with Feedburner,- however I suspect they will need to be compatible with rssCloud) Translation for end-users: wait and see. - William Mougayar from FriendFeed MT Plugin
@William Hopefully - its a pointless debate - always was. - Chris Saad
pointless for those who don't care about realtime - Steve Gillmor
lol saying that to me is kinda silly too Steve :) - Chris Saad
Instead of debating, why not just let the API mashup devs do their thing and the rssCloud (RSSCloud?) devs do their thing. We (the social media megaphoners) need to just shut our speculating pieholes, wait, and anticipate being blown away (or not). Turning non issues into issues is SO Web 1.0. #justsayin #rsscloud #api - Mona Nomura
it's not a non-issue, and these technologoies were invented to give people a voice - Steve Gillmor
Mona, you're so wise! :-) - Dave Winer
The fact that we are all here in FF (SUP) vs. discussing via instantized blog/comment volley/query rebuttal is telling. This notion of approaching more realtime options is how blogs might get back to being useful for certain groups of folks. Maybe? - Jay Cuthrell
Real-time is a very important feature Jay - super important. So are a number of other key features of the social web and a number of new emerging features of the next web. - Chris Saad
(didn't mean to inject or hijack anything there btw... this is all good stuff) - Jay Cuthrell
Thanks, Dave. Congrats on the big news, btw! - Mona Nomura
To add - if "real time discussions" are pertinent to your forward thinking, innovations, and products: You're Doing it Wrong. Form opinions, then discuss. If you're wrong, apologize, learn, and move on. #CriticalThinking101 - Mona Nomura
Thanks Mona. :-) - Dave Winer
In hindsight, Steve's obsession with the subject of real-time might have heightened our attention on the debate, but also perhaps hastened the development of rssCloud. I'm sure that in the back of Dave Winer's mind, he wanted to show that Twitter (and Friendfeed to some extent) wasn't the only real-time game in town (in addition to the fact that this hook was already available in RSS... more... - William Mougayar from FriendFeed MT Plugin
William, you'd be 100 percent wrong about that. I was doing this stuff before Twitter or FriendFeed existed. - Dave Winer
I'm not so sure Twitter was ever real time. Only centralized. This made it appear realtime. (Except for the lucky few - i.e. friendfeed) - Jeremy Felt
reagrdless of the prior art discussion, certainly dave's embrace of realtime is good news - Steve Gillmor
amen, Steve - Jesse Stay
@stevegillmor: prior art? What on earth are you trying to say in this context? Since when did prior art have anything to do with real time? Or have I missed something fundamental? - Dennis Howlett
Let's see what happens with all the million Wordpress.com blogs. But I have a felling this will be big but we won't see the impact for a few months - Wayne Sutton from iPhone
Dave, I'm glad I was wrong (as I hinted to the fact that you had that hook there from 2001). I recall well how Radio Userland and Manila used to interchange feeds in real-time. You sure have kept us in suspense, til now, though! - William Mougayar from FriendFeed MT Plugin

Nine ways Twitter could make money:
1. Look for affiliate revenues - Robert Scoble
2. Exploit the spaces between content - Robert Scoble
3. Adopt a freemium model - Robert Scoble
4. Add Virtual Goods - Robert Scoble
5. Get recurring revenue, er, find a way to charge for subscriptions. - Robert Scoble
6. If you’re going to do advertising, get into creating ads that are viral and interactive. - Robert Scoble
7. Create “frequent tweeting” programs - Robert Scoble
8. Look for support, or tips, from your users. - Robert Scoble
9. Get outside your website. Try to sell schwag. Do events. Etc. - Robert Scoble
Pro features at some point would be nice. An enterprise version could work as well. - Mike Fruchter
Inserting geo-targetted ads on Tweets. - Mike Fruchter
Got any others? - Robert Scoble
what about truncated, collapsable/expandable threading? - David Lloyd
And maybe "Nine ways Friendfeed could make money" hehe - David Lloyd
Twitter should license their technology to companies for intranets. - Michael Gaines
TweetSense. Ad Tweets served BY Twitter, who has the best idea of your Tweet volume and subject matter. http://www.blindfiveyearold.com/tweetse... Lowest hanging fruit, contextual ads on the Twitter Search page. - AJ Kohn
What about platform support via dev tools? Encourage the ecosystem and make money at the same time? (Apologies, Robert, I replied on Twitter first.) - Tim Beyers
10. add premium support for app developers. - Darren Stuart
Considering they have had 100% uptime for a few months, you have to think stability is fine now and they have their engineers beavering away on new features. Of course digg has 80 engineers and hardly ever seems to launch anything :p - David Lloyd
Thanks for this article Robert - bcultral
11. sell inhouse or managed solutions to companies for their own uses internally and sell federation CAL's so they can connect the internal solution to the wider twitter network so that specific users can tweet to the public. - alphaxion
Sell the entire background page to brands by the hour/day with some of the area being made available for discounts/offers. (You need something to benefit users too, not just Twitter.) ;-p - mtlb
I'm a little scared of the day all these FREE Social Networking sites CLOSE THE DOOR ON FREE, with all my data inside. - PaulFrankRizzo
good point..what is the answer Robert? - bcultral
Paul: I don't think free is going away. But I sure would pay for decent DM features, for instance. Lots of companies would pay for custom skinning features. - Robert Scoble
By following a brand's advertising account you consent to receiving ads from them. Add some profiling info to this and it could be a powerful tool to receive adverts on a users terms. - John Galpin
7.1> Post ad-tweets every half an hour from twitter account, which every twitter user will follow by default (have to follow by default). Make changes to API, so that people can't work around it and dodge this tweet. - | Balu |
Create daily reports for similar types of tweets and licence that data to various companies, this will be user generated marketing report. - Shanthala Balagopal
Chris: in that case I hope they do all nine! Just kidding, but, seriously, these sites need to find a way to make some revenues or they'll go away. If you don't want them to find a revenue model you are NOT a good user of these systems. - Robert Scoble
ugh, can we please look at ways for twitter to make money without resorting to adverts? I'm pretty sure there's loads of ways, I've mentioned the one I have been bleeting on about for months now. How about you? Can you come up with ways to make money without going cap in hand to advertisers? - alphaxion
Phase 1: Twitter Phase 2: ??? Phase 3: Profit! - Alastair Montgomery
alphaxion: most of these are not about advertising. - Robert Scoble
Every local government needs to be on twitter, on their own twitter - and so does every state and federal government, police and emergency service - operated privately and 'independently' from the main twitter stream. - Chris Loft
care to comment about Obama and his 8 million strong email database taken into the Govt side? I am a community organizer and feel that email list belongs to the people - bcultral
Create a premium 'breaking news' service from data mining existing content and sell it to the old media. - Andrew Leyden
apart from 6 ;) Tho I'm addressing the others who are commenting rather than your suggestions. Trying to tease a bit of creative thinking out of people. I think it is a very healthy activity to get people working on ideas for how to make money and excluding the advertisers at the same time. - alphaxion
Chris: friendfeed has the same business model choices ahead of them to make too. - Robert Scoble
Selling my email address is NOT a way to make money. People will lose faith and/or start using phony emails for signups. - Michael Gaines
Alphaxion: #6 is actually about Context Optional, a company that creates very creative, viral ads. If you're going to do ads, that's the way to do it. - Robert Scoble
squeeze the advertisers...users should not have to pay for service ..other then paying to put up with advertisers and regulating and demanding subtlety - bcultral
Chris: hah! Actually most of the dating services are going to free models so they'll need to use some of these 9 too. - Robert Scoble
Robin: problem is that advertisers are going away. TechCrunch is hearing that this year could see some sites have 50% fewer ad revenues than before. So, you'll see more sites use these nine business models on you. - Robert Scoble
point taken - bcultral
How many users on FF at this point? - bravestface
Have Twitter subscribers pick a few products to "endorse", and have ads with their Twitter names attached to them. Then, give those users a discount based on # of clicks. - Michael Gaines
Robert: not forgetting that comps can simply sing up with an account and tweet updates from there, which is where inhouse and federation can be handy. New version release? An auto tweet to the public can be done - alphaxion
Chris: adsense is shit. Pays low CPMs. HotorNot makes $10 by selling virtual flowers. I'd love to be able to put a flower on your comments. Or something else. :-) - Robert Scoble
Turn "following" into a Multi-Level Marketing pyramid! - Rick Tuttle
very interesting discussion, robert. thank you! after 2 months of running Magpie (http://be-a-magpie.com), I can resume that #2 from your list works really well for both tweeps (they earn) and advertisers. - Jan Schulz-Hofen

They should Plax-ify Twitter and create a premium service to share and update full contact details between followers. - matt howard
Rick: I thought following already was a multi-level marketing pyramid! You should have seen my son on Sunday when we were on Leo Laporte's show. He told his 2,000 live listeners that they had to follow my son. He got 100 new followers in a couple of minutes. - Robert Scoble
I think you forgot data mining (which links directly into advertising model, and buzz campaign monitoring). In a nutshell they should have a look at us ;-) (heck, we already do #2 and what I mentionned above!) - twitscoop
bravestface: there are about 250,000 registered users of friendfeed (it's a guess based on available data). - Robert Scoble
If you're a company trying sell/advertise via Twitter...I would expect them to pay. That way it doesn't piss off your standard user. The key is charging less than other competing PR firms. - CannonGod
How about a search engine. Soon there will be so many people and companies on Twitter (and similar sites) that people will want to search for those like they do for web sites. It's already frustrating trying to find people now as the current search is very limited. Add to that a similar model to AdWords that could generate money. Would be interested to see what other people think of this idea! - Joanna Butler
Joanna: http://search.twitter.com has tons of places to monetize. I'd pay $5 a month to be listed on top or have a "pro" icon next to my name, for instance. - Robert Scoble
Chris: there are quite a few that I don't even track. Hi-5, for instance. - Robert Scoble
Emphasis on 'could' - AJ Kohn
Robert: I'm with you on that! Once companies are using Twitter, they'd easily see the benefits of a pro listing. I have several clients who'd at least be willing to experiment that. - Joanna Butler
The key is for Twitter to charge advertisers and not users. For example, they could make a mint by placing sidebar ads (a la FB) and justifying $ rates relative to the most popular people followed - such as you, @LeoLaporte, @guykawasaki, oh, and 'That One.' - Jim Mitchem
@jim they would make orders of magnitudes more by selling their software, support of the software and access to their software instead of limiting themselves so badly with conventional advertising. - alphaxion
If you tell Toyota or Coke that their constituency is online with Twitter and they're following specific people, or trending topics - you know they'd pay through the nose for those precious few seconds. It's push vs. pull. - Jim Mitchem
@chris - that's cool, just don't snort coke and drive Trish in a Toyota concurrently. - Jim Mitchem
@chris their software is a product they can sell, the userbase is a compelling feature of that product.. "pay for our commerical API to add twitter support to your product and add the ability of your customers to share their going-ons with the network and stoke demand and interest"... - alphaxion
Chris: exactly. Done right, who wouldn't pay? - Joanna Butler
What's the source of the current online culture of entitlement? Users don't want paid subscriptions nor to suffer ads. The same view that powers online piracy. Shouldn't creative professionals and those who fund them be compensated? If not, there will eventually be a big drop in production. Ps- few companies even use internal IM or digital BBS to share institutional knowledge, I don't see enterprise Twitted as being very lucrative. - Colin Hessel
I pay for reliability and accountability - a free service owes me nothing, they can lose my data overnight, be unavailable whenever, disappear. A service I pay for comes with an SLA, some guarantees, etc. Plus, if you don't pay for it, or donate to it, one day it will be gone and you might feel sorry. - Iphigenie
I would pay for additional features = pro account (stability, groups, counter, threads etc in one interface)... but I am just an ordinary user... - Hanna Wiszniewska
ok, so maybe Toyota was a bad example http://tinyurl.com/99gkj7 - Jim Mitchem
enterprise version already exists look at http://www.yammer.com - Andrew Mueller
Great ideas Robert. Twitter execs will appreciate it but I still think no business model will exist until they are acquired. - Jeremy Campbell from twhirl
yes, i think acquisition was their business model - but the economic crisis did dash hopes of a gold-plated one so they are thinking about value added services now (through the buy-in of sandy it seems "concierge" style message parsing is one option they are looking at. If you can buy, book, plan, coordinate things semi automatically via twitter there is value in there) - Iphigenie
content partnerships, - imran
Following on from the discussion re FF UI - this discussion shows a BIG issue - I had to expand 95 comments to see Robert's original 9 (and was that the best way to publish the list?) and now I can't compress them! - Mark Warren
Mark: if you refresh the page they will be compressed again. - Robert Scoble
At the very least, show Google Ads on search - Varun Mahajan
I like the idea of selling aspects of the API as a SaaS. Also think they could very easily start charging consumers for Track and SMS. - Clay Newton
They would do well to add the ability to do very robust data mining. You can imagine providing a set of business intelligence dashboards to track and analyze customer sentiment as well as real time trend analysis. - Clay Newton
Virtual goods are a really solid idea as well. Look at what they are doing at Mahalo Answers. Mixes virtual $$ and real $. Twitter could easily implement a number of different levels here. They could also open up the API to provide even greater levels of functionality for app developers, essentially building a tiny-app framework. - Clay Newton
tony: you then get into the murkey problem of is it their data? By the same standard your ISP could sell their data on your usage. Is it ethical and would your customer base accept it? - alphaxion
I just posted the Social Networking Monetization Golden Goose idea yesterday at http://www.growmap.com/monetiz... - Internet Strategist
@alphaxion - Advertisers will always be in the mix and are inevitable, they should do just in a way that doesn’t interfere with individual tweets/updates. Unless Twitter has an endless supply of financing, they’ll have to go to outside sources, (like subscribers/advertisers). I don’t see Twitter though offering so much value as to make it worth paying for. Not enough features. (ESPN.com has its insider pay service and still runs a ton of ads on the site, so having one rev. stream doesn’t eliminate another.) - mtlb
Someone also mentioned a pay service for exclusive/breaking news on Twitter. First, I have Drudge for breaking news, but more importantly, part of the appeal of Twitter is that people like to feel they broke the news themselves. Why should Twitter or a select few decide what's breaking and what’s not and exclude the rest of the users from contributing to that? - mtlb
I would pay good money for the ability to punch people over the internet. - stretta
Make people pay to block other users! They'll get rich. - Rae21
I was reading this long list of comments and then the system did its hiccup/update thing and it all went away and I had to spend time looking for the damn thread again. Freaking annoying! - Rae21
@twitscoop Twitter data mining (strangely over looked) seems less like a business model then and more like a feature of the social network: transforming the data flow of one's social graph into usable information is why we stick around in the first place. Oh, I guess that does count as a business model. - Brad Kligerman
I've noticed a couple companies contacting me directly via Twitter when I have made noise about their products. Obviously, people say a lot of things on Twitter about products they use... I agree with Patrick Pushor; "develop tools for professional/advanced use of twitter and charge for that level of service". Twitter should send a rep. to companies to show them how to use Twitter to improve their own products and service, by using Twitter Search to find out what consumers are saying about their products. - Colleen
I wrote an article about twitter's fundamental problem yesterday. Essentially, all communication networks move toward being free. www.zachlandes.com - Zach Landes

Robert Scoble
Remember, most Americans believe in God. Most Americans have kids in sports programs. Most Americans don't have a Passport. Palin wins.
Robert, no offense, but you're really souring my stomach. Why not leverage your position and sphere of influence to fight for what you believe in. Or are you one of those creationist types too? Do you really think its game over with this election? Do I need to go find a place overseas and become an expat? - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Ahhhhh... that's why you think McCain will win. I think 8 years, war & recession may sway the masses. - anna sauce
Brian, lol. I have lived overseas for 4 years. Most Americans don't know how good they've got it. - Justin Long
mores the pity - ben rogers from twhirl
If you think that the majority of the populace will vote for the candidate who most approximates them, demographically, then Obama has no chance at all. But we know this is not the case. Furthermore, Barack Obama believes in God (not just "god") and I presume his daughters play organized sports. Finally: most Americans believe that the Iraq War was a mistake and *not* part of God's master plan. You might want to factor those facts into your predictive formula. - Chester
I love the idea that it isn't because people might actually agree with McCain on the issue - it must be because they are dumb fools who will vote for the folks with the hockey players. Let's ignore that this isn't how things have gone historically. At what point will folks on the left decide that just maybe folks who don't agree with them are well meaning humans with a different POV and not ignorant sheep? - Soulhuntre
@BDE if you do, let me know. I've heard living the digital nomad life in South America is the perfect expat way to go. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Most American women are not former beauty queens...Most families do not have 5 children...And most Americans do not have such a fundamental view of Christianity - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Actually Soulhuntre it is how things have historically worked...Take JFK vs Nixon for instance...there were a lot of people who voted for JFK just because he was more charismatic...it has been so ever since - Scoble, Alex Scoble
@Alex: Most people like prom and beauty queens. Most people have kids, it really doesn't matter the number. Most people are Christians and don't draw the distinctions between fundamentalist and non-fundamentalist because they don't need to. Also, I see no problem with having kids in sports programs...? - Ben Parr
Alex - Good point. Gore and Kerry had zero charisma. - Russellreno
I'm just pointing out how she is NOT like the average American. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
@Chris Well then they lost, because it seems Dems are incapable of focusing on anything else except Palin, which is Ironic considering attacks against Hillary was the harshest form of sexism ever. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
@Alex - charisma I will agree with. Charisma is a synthesis of a number of human judgments that tend to convey trust, leadership, dominance and so on. But charisma is NOT "the same as me". Heck, Obama is easily the most charismatic guy in this field, despite is sameness handicap as Robert sees it. - Soulhuntre
Soulhuntre, since the Republican strategy for this election is to treat you like ignorant sheep, how do you expect us well meaning humans to believe any differently? Just sayin' - JCunwired
Did Soulhuntre just agree with me? I think he did. Cool. *this is a 100% snark free comment...seriously* - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I think most "most"s are mostly made up. - Craig Eddy
Two out of three here, but I'm still voting for Obama. Also, Chris Baskind is right: don't focus on Palin. Latest Obama ad indicates that focus is shifting back to McCain. - Steve Lowe
I agree with Glen. Let's not be distracted by the red herring Palin. Let's focus on Obama, and where is Biden? It's time he spoke up, like he does at other times. - Cathryn Hrudicka
Per your own words, most people have as much experience and relativity as Palin. This is why they won't vote for her:) W00t! - Roney Smith
That's an excellent point Glen. - Keith Shepard from twhirl
Robert, it really saddens me to hear you so pessimistic, but since the Palin pick embodies nothing so much as cynicism (as Frum says: It's a denial that information matters. http://tinyurl.com/4fsjxv ) yours is at least an honest, if hopefully transient response. I hope you feel better tomorrow. - Rick Powell
@Alex - I've agreed with you before on stuff I think. And I think the reading upside down thing rocks :) - Soulhuntre
@Jody C - obviously we have differing opinions on that :) Keep thinking we are idiots if you like - it is the core conceit that keeps democrats from making any headway. The core conceit that more often than not loses elections. - Soulhuntre
Scoble is coming off as pompous with that tweet. - David Risley
Soulhuntre, you misunderstand. I am not calling you idiots, merely pointing out that the misleading, untruthful ads put out by the McCain campaign lead me to think that Republicans think we are all idiots. Lets face it, they've treated us all that way since Bush's first campaign in 2000 (and subsequent promises broken), stepped it up on Sept. 11 leading up to Iraq war, and perfected it during the 2004 elections. - JCunwired
I personally believe that in a few weeks this whole Palin crap will wear off/she'll really screw up. Obama is going to be our next President and that is great! - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
No wonder you are losing followers. Sorry you really have wrong perception of democrats. Not everyone is a republican snob like yourself. A social media snob if i may add. Bye. - orionstarr
Robert: Thanks for keeping it real -- you are only stating the obvious and sometimes people just won't accept it. Sadly, Progressive and tolerant are two different things, I guess. - Oldengrey (Jay)
re: passports specifically...it is also the reason why most americans shouldn't be Vice President - George Lee from twhirl
Robert is dead center. The side with the best propaganda and images win. Palin is walking, breathing propaganda and the democratic leaders are not good propagandists. Republicans win. If you want Obama to win, you have to hope for better propaganda that resonates with Mr. & Mrs. Middle. - Dean Terry
@Dean Terry So your saying most of the middle relates to white trash? - orionstarr
Orion: Good retort! - Oldengrey (Jay)
I think it's sad to read someone not getting elected would be "soul crushing." Yes, elections are important, but they should not determine your happiness or lack of happiness. I was not happy to see Bill Clinton elected either time, but I never lost any sleep, never got depressed, never moved to Canada. I understand the desire to see Obama as today's John, Robert, and Martin, but he's none of the above. - ComicList
Cathryn, the less Biden says, the better off Obama is. Biden has a record of racist and sexist comments, and Obama doesn't need to waste time apologizing for his VP. He needs to spend time explaining why he should be President instead of McCain. - ComicList
One of the reasons I left the Democratic party was the constant harping on how it was so wrong that they would lose, and that the Republicans must have either pulled some dirty trick or fooled the voters into voting for them. No, it's actually possible a Democratic candidate, even Obama, can be rejected by voters because they believe the other candidate is a better choice. - ComicList

9 years of Catholic school were forced down my throat, and now I don't believe in any sort of "God." So I have to agree. Just because your parents believe in it doesn't mean that you have to. - ::Kristen::
Religion is a product. - Eric Rice
+1 Eric. - ::Kristen::
Through history religion and heritage have mixed. The best example is Judaism. There is the Jewish religion and Jewish heritage. One of my best friends converted from Judaism to Christianity. He many no longer be a part of the Jewish religion but that does not mean he dumped his Jewish heritage. - ChiliMac from twhirl
Jews throw off surveys in that regard. They make no distinction between "I'm Jewish" (it's my ethnicity), and "I'm Jewish" (it's my religion). A good number of them would identify as atheist/agnostic were it not for the ethnic dimension. - Eric P
agree, but as other commenters note, the issue in Judaism is that there is little separation in terms of how Judaism is promoted or considered, by those within it, and outside of it. - Duncan Riley
Judaism is not promoted outside of the Jewish community. When was the last time you had a pair of young Chassids show up at your doorstep with pamphlets? - Akiva
To quote Michael Ian Black: "Hey, wanna be a Jew? Free hats!" - Lon Harris from twhirl
Akiva, sorry, promoted NOT in that sense. In terms of the State of Israel, the story of the diaspora and the foundation of the Jewish state...Judasim is considered in terms of the "Jewish people" as opposed to a religion by itself - Duncan Riley
Duncan, right, sorry, I misunderstood. It is true though that we consider ourselves both a religion and an ethnicity, both of which are accurate considering our origins. Jews don't have to be religious to be Jews. Antisemites will hate you whether you daven or not. - Akiva
Seems like here in the US, especially when the discussion surrounds politics, religion is referred to very genericly. The assumption is always a Judao-Christian persuasion. The other assumption made in the political arena is that to be American, you must be religious. Not being religious in America (according to the above definition) is un-American. Both parties are guilty of propagating this thought process. One more so than the other. I feel this is insulting to those with alternate or no beliefs. - Jeff P. Henderson
Honestly, I get the other end of it: I'm insulted constantly for being religious. What's also irritating is people say 'I hate religion!' when really they only hate Christianity and even then they usually only hate the proselytism. Many people don't know enough about non-Christian religions to hate them with any sense of rationality or educated opinion. 'Oh? You hate Jainism, too? Why?' '...' - Akiva
The world is so full of religious intolerance. This is true between religions, as well as governments. One of the things that is a turn off to me about many religions is the fact that they feel 'their' way/god is the only way/god and that everyone else is wrong. I know that this behavior is not part of the teachings of most religions, but those who practice then seem to feel the need to behave this way. - Jeff P. Henderson
Religion is not genetic. But adherence to a group/society is (I think)... Hence people take the safe way out and stick to the beliefs that most of the people they know follow. And thus religions persist. - Nikhil Dandekar
They won't. As long as people are scared to death for no reason, religion will persist and efforts to rewrite science will continue. - Krishnan Subramanian
Many people think religion is genetic, or at least they treat it that way. As if when you're 6 you have the cognitive ability to *choose* whether you believe your parents' version of The Story? Yet most parents have no problem brainwashing their children accordingly. - Anthony Citrano
Religion ?= Inter racial conflict? =( - Ron
Liked because it puts an interesting issue back out there. Both for me, my mother is Jewish and and my father is Roman-Catholic, neither of which are very into formalized religion at this point in their lives. I am not sure what or who I really am except for a creature learning although both religions lay claim to to me. If I had to side, my ethnicity if that is is the genetic component being referred to is that of being Jewish. The practicing a religion part is still a work in progress. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Uh oh, hyper dangerous religion post ! BTW, I'm genetically semitic in origin, but I'm not Jewish. How does that square with Jews on here? Additionally, if there's some special gene for Jews, what about people who turn / convert to Judaism? Are they still considered 'true' Jews? - Mo Kargas
Mo: That comment was just troll bait from someone or a j/k in poor taste if folks actually want to have thoughtful discourse. From my perspective, It is pretty tough to covert to Judaism. Those folks are often-times "true-er jews" imho. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew, it's seriously not troll bait, and I'm seriously disappointed you've labeled it so. They're honest questions that I've thought about for years. It's confusing as Jewishness is sometimes defined as a religion, sometimes as a racial/genetic trait and sometimes both. If my family 3 generations back is Jewish, am I still Jewish, even though I may practice another religion? - Mo Kargas
Mo: I was referring to Loren's comments not your own. My apologies for not being more specific. Mea culpa. - Mathew A. Koeneker
As to your question: Unfortunately to some it would not matter what you believed in or even practiced. You would still be considered Jewish. Bigots are the same all over the world and no matter the ethnicity. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Before the modern era, religion was part of the constitution of the political structure. (That's why U.S. separation of church and state is a novelty). Kings were annointed by priests. In other words kings served at the pleasure of gods. In some cases kings were gods. Belief systems were always entwined with political structures. Conversion wasn't a private matter... it was a matter of abandoning one community and joining another. - Michael Markman
The traditional Jewish position is that Jewish identity is inherited from (and only from) the mother. Jewish identity can also be acquired by conversion. In the view of Jewish law, it's strictly binary. You can't be half-Jewish. If a non--Jewish woman converts, her children will be Jewish no matter what the father. If a man converts, only he is Jewish—unless the mother of his children is also Jewish. That's not a genetic system. - Michael Markman
There is one edge case scenario in which Jewish law recognizes "opting out" of Jewish identity. A man marries a non-Jewish woman who has a young child. The woman converts, and a conversion ceremony is performed for the child. When that child reaches the age of thirteen (legal adulthood), he has the opportunity to opt-out. - Michael Markman
This conversation is always amusing to me as it's usually the people who understand the least about Jewishness are the people more stridently vocal against the ethnicity of Jews. There is medical and historical proof of Jewish ethnicity, not the least of which is that we have certain diseases peculiar to us. Although the religion and the people are very intertwined, the people predate the religion. We were 'Jews' before Moses and we'll be Jews after the Moshiach. - Akiva
To answer Mo's question, Jews who convert clearly don't suddenly become descendants but, as Mathew points out, conversion to Judaism is difficult, long, and often simply not allowed (a Rabbi can, and will, sometimes say, 'Nope, sorry, this just isn't working.') and many ethnic Jews hold converts in high regard not only for the conversion process but for actually WANTING to be discriminated against. As far as Jews are concerned, if you're Jewish, you're Jewish regardless of how you pray. Do what you like. - Akiva
Isn't messianic ethnocentrism a source of enormous wasteful conflict in the world? And aren't most modern religious and political ideologies (like Enlightenment Americanism) universalist and trans-ethnic in nature? Nazism would be a good example of a messianic ethnocentric ideology which cuts against the grain of modern universalism. - Sean McBride
Was Loren Feldman joking or serious when he made this remark? "If you are talking about Jews, it is genetic. We are the chosen people of g-d and as such have an extra gene only found in Jews." - Sean McBride
Thanks for the detail, Mathew, Michael and Akiva. It's very interesting. I think I'll try find a Rabbi to explain more Jewish law to me. - Mo Kargas
Mo: You are quite welcome! Try for an orthodox rabbi that has a similar background to yourself. I am very much the noob when it comes to the law. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Does anyone want to take a crack at Loren Feldman's statement? "If you are talking about Jews, it is genetic. We are the chosen people of g-d and as such have an extra gene only found in Jews." Which branch of Judaism, if any, believes this? Chabad-Lubavitch perhaps? - Sean McBride
Sean: He was playing the part of Troll. I do not know of any of these so-called extra genes. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew -- but according to some reputable scholars, Chabad-Lubavitch does indeed hold racist views quite similar to those which Loren Feldman expressed. Has Loren made other racist statements? - Sean McBride
Sean: I am not Loren's keeper nor subscribe to whatever views that you are referring to. Are you trying to engage in dialogue or just stir the pot? - Mathew A. Koeneker
I'm trying to engage in dialogue, Mathew: are there racist strains in some factions of Judaism, like Chabad-Lubavitch, that are not unlike Loren Feldman's comment? Do they have much influence in contemporary Israel and religious Zionism? - Sean McBride
Sean: There are racist strains and racists in every religion, party, ethnic group, or other subsection of humanity. I defend none of them. Why am I getting the perception that you are just a wee bit polarized on this debate. I did track back some of your previous posts and you seem to have a bit of a problem with Jews. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew -- I've been much more critical of Christian fundamentalists than Jewish fundamentalists, but apparently you've got a thin skin about criticism of the latter group. Many Americans are greatly concerned about the central role that Christian and Jewish pro-Israel militants, relying heavily on the most racist themes in the Old Testament, have played in promoting the disastrous Iraq War, an Iran War, World War IV and endless Mideast wars in general. It's a hot topic in American politics. - Sean McBride
Mathew -- you didn't respond to my question about the role of Chabad-Lubavitch in contemporary Israel and religious Zionism. That's fine -- perhaps you don't know anything about the subject. But I have the impression that they have been highly influential in pushing some of the most extreme memes in Orthodox Judaism to the forefront of Israeli and American politics. - Sean McBride
Btw, a month or two ago I quickly ran into four or five pro-Israel militants on Friendfeed who became quite upset when I pointed out, accurately and truthfully, that the American military and intelligence establishments were strongly opposed to an American OR Israeli attack on Iran on the grounds that such an attack would be destructive for the American interest. I haven't encountered anyone outside the Israel lobby who is strongly agitating to expand the war against Iraq to Iran. - Sean McBride
Sean: Just a tip but put your diatribes into a word doc and then cut and paste. Or are you trying to inflate your "image" and keep things on the front page? When did these extra wars happen by the way? I must have been working and missed them. I don't know much of the Lubavitch movement just as I know little about David Duke other than he got me to switch my voter registration to LA while at Tulane to vote for the crook not the neo-nazi. What is the point of your argument? - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew -- this subject is not eliciting any interesting responses from you, from my standpoint. Where you are trying to go is very weak, and doesn't address some of the controversial topics on the table. - Sean McBride
Game on Sean: Why do you not deserve my 2nd unsub? What is your background? What is your ethnicity? What is your religious background? What is the end game of this so-called discussion? Why are you so polarized? Are you trying to get folks thinking or are you just reinforcing your own views of the world? - Mathew A. Koeneker
Religious Zionism, a messianic ethnic nationalist movement that is being promoted by an alliance of Christian and Jewish fundamentalists, is the most conspicuous and dangerous example of mixing together religious and genetic mythologies in American politics today. Christian Zionists like George W. Bush and Chabad-Lubavitch supporters like Joseph Lieberman are two of many powerful... more... - Sean McBride
But you are avoiding my questions good sir. What is your angle? Why is this your soapbox? Why do you keep repeating the same thing over and over? This is not what one learns in debate class. - Mathew A. Koeneker
How many times can you use the word Zion in one comment? :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew - I've put a few topics into play, but you can't handle them. I suggest we drop this unless you can say something interesting. Here's an interesting book which you might want to read to get up to speed: Victoria Clark; Allies for Armageddon: The Rise of Christian Zionism; Yale University Press; 2007 http://tinyurl.com/6hgv7f - Sean McBride
Regarding Clark: "Clark engages with Christian Zionism directly, interviewing leaders, attending events, and traveling with Christian Zionists in the Holy Land. She also investigates the Christian Zionist presence in Israel. She finds that the view through the Christian Zionist lens is dangerously simple: President Bush’s War on Terror is a mythic battle between good and evil, and Syria and Iran represent the powers of darkness." (continued) - Sean McBride
"Such views are far from rare—an estimated fifteen to twenty million Americans share them. Almost one in three Americans believes Israel was given to the Jews by God as a prelude to the Battle of Armageddon and Jesus’ Second Coming. Clark concludes with an assessment of Christian Zionists’ impact on American foreign policy in the Middle East and on America’s relationships with European allies since the attacks of 9/11." - Sean McBride
Sean: How is my desire to understand where you are coming from equate into not being able to handle your diatribes? Why are you afraid to come clean and say what your background is? I have more faith in the veracity of others ideas when they tell me where "they" are coming from. Reading a book or three doesn't make one an expert. So, please speak up. I can't be more open than that. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew - Roman Catholic by upbringing, currently agnostic with a broad interest in all religions, Anglo-Irish ethnicity, fourth-generation American, progressive libertarian political orientation, and concerned about the role of religious fundamentalism in American and global politics. Your profile? - Sean McBride
Review of Clark: "So do you think the religious right in the U.S. and elsewhere are just a bunch of harmless nuts who spend their time yelling about the right to life and how clusters of a few cells in the womb have a soul? Well, if you haven't been reading the newspapers or watching TV for the last few years at least read this book. It describes in detail how the Christian fundamentalist movement has hijacked U.S. foreign policy in order to further their literal interpretation of the bible." (continued) - Sean McBride
"These people believe that the second coming of Christ is dependant on Jewish possession of the Holy Land and that the Jews will eventually rebuild the Temple of Solomon, paving the way for the ultimate battle between good and evil, Armageddon. Hence, the state of Israel must be supported regardless of the cost to the U.S. God has said he will bless those who support the Jews and curse those who do not, and if the Jewish people cooperate the advent of the "end times" will be hastened." - Sean McBride
Scroll up and see. Jewish mother, Roman-Catholic father, catholic grade school, seminary for 1 year, boarding school for 3 years, university for 6 years, 2nd Generation American, I have lived in MO, LA, CA, NYC, and Vienna. Politically w/o party at this point. Anglo/Irish on Dad's side and Slavic/Jew on Mom's side. Grandchild of Holocaust survivors. Strange desire to understand why folks believe what they do. See..that wasn't hard was it? :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Please don't take this too harshly but what do you think about all of the quotes you are posting? I would like to understand you. - Mathew A. Koeneker
The personal profiles are interesting, but usually I can evaluate the knowledge level of someone on any given subject without knowing their religion, ethnicity, etc. Facts are facts, and the logical exposition of facts is either solid or not. Reading lists and bibliographies are usually more informative than demographics and psychographics. - Sean McBride
Sean: You just side-stepped again. What are YOUR thoughts? You do your own thinking right? - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew - I've expressed my own views in my own words in several comments here already. You still haven't responded to the substance of the comments. - Sean McBride
Mathew - regarding your profile - your current religious affiliation, if any? Politics - did you support or oppose the Iraq War? I strongly opposed it. - Sean McBride
OK. Sean you appear to use quotes a lot. Anything can be warped and twisted so your argument that facts are facts is invalid. Take the the swastika for instance. It is a beautiful symbol that was warped and now has such a negative vibe. The symbol hasn't changed. The way in which man used it did. It appears that you are unwilling to say what you think. I think that you are just stirring the pot for some unfathomed reason. I fear that I know the answer and reason but I hope that I am mistaken. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew - do you know that the Bush 43 administration is in strong conflict with the Israeli government as we speak -- over the settlements movement (promoted by religious Zionists) and the prospects of an Iran War? Which side do you support? - Sean McBride
Jewish but still exploring. Libertarian if I had to pick. I think that we need a major overhaul. The politico's are too entrenched. We need new, fresh voices not the option of one choice being less worse than the other. Which war in Iraq? The first wholeheartedly. The second, with reservation, but once involved I fully support. I don't support Zealots that is my side. I don't side with anyone that preaches the destruction of others. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew - which branch of Judaism? Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Ultra-Orthodox? I'm very sympathetic to Reform Judaism and the secular Jewish tradition in general. I strongly opposed the Iraq War long before it began because the invasion and occupation of foreign nations usually leads to disasters for the invaders and occupiers. Iran and Muslim fundamentalists have been the chief beneficiaries of a war which is costing Americans several trillions of dollars. - Sean McBride
I am glad to see that we are at last communicating with and not at each other. I do need to hit the hay soon. I attend an Orthodox shul. I agree with your assessment of the monetary cost but think that is microscopic compared to the cost in human lives, lost limbs, lost ideals, and yet another generation brought up with the ideal of killing as a solution. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew -- get some sleep. :) We can pick this up later. - Sean McBride
The several trillions of dollars that are being used to destroy Iraqi society and infrastructure on behalf of neoconservative geopolitical objectives could have instead been used to improve the quality of life for Americans in innumerable ways. The Iraq War was the greatest foreign policy disaster in American history. I opposed it. Quite a few other people not only supported it, but served as cheerleaders for it at the tops of their lungs. - Sean McBride
Mathew, again - do you know that the Bush 43 administration is in strong conflict with the Israeli government as we speak -- over the settlements movement (promoted by religious Zionists) and the prospects of an Iran War? Which side do you support? I oppose new settlements and an Iran War (for the same reasons I opposed the Iraq War). For once, I find myself in agreement with this administration. - Sean McBride

Leaked: Last.fm v2.0 iPhone App (leaked/unreleased video, not sure how long it will stay up) http://cdn.last.fm/toby...
Hopefully it copes with iffy networks better now. Always have trouble with Last.FM where Pandora and Simplify were just awesome. - Ernie Oporto
I noticed once that my Pandora connection finished a song (2 minutes) eventhough I had 'No Service' on the screen for quite awhile. It didn't play the next track, so I was sort of guess it downloads and cache's the whole track if possible. - Andrew Leyden
Looks fun to me. As long as the volume slider is no longer a damn pop up it's all good (gotta think about the touch users without the volume rocker). - Josh

It's probably not Apple doing this - I can't see any reason why they'd not want this type of application to be available. This will be coming from limitations imposed by the networks - they hate this type of app because it lets customers actually use what they're paying for!! - Stuart Dallas from Alert Thingy
