wow, that was GREAT. one question: that picture of sara and the crab - was that thing magnified through the glass or was it seriously that big? crazy!!!
- Felicity Arnold
It was huge. But let's face it, she is kind of smallish herself.
- Jon
impressive. takes "getting crabby" to a whole new level.

"We make decisions with partial information. We are forced to steer by guesswork. We go with our gut. That is, some of us do. Others use data. A timer running on Robin Barooah’s computer tells him that he has been living in the United States for 8 years, 2 months and 10 days. At various times in his life, Barooah — a 38-year-old self-employed software designer from England who now lives in Oakland, Calif. — has also made careful records of his work, his sleep and his diet."

“Recently, we have had some successes in the fight against terrorism,” he said. “We were able to take the heads off the most notorious gangsters. But apparently it was not enough. In any case, in due time we will find and punish them all. Just like their predecessors.”

I wonder how many more perfect games we'd see if the real pitchers were handed a check for a million dollars at the end of a perfect game.

"We use the Mac OS from the iPod Touch, to the new iPad, to the iPhone, to the Macintosh, and I think there is no other company on the Earth that could use the foundation of their OS in such a way. And so that allows us to innovate at a enormously fast speed with many fewer people then what it would take if we were geographically north." - Tim Cook
"At Crown Point high above Burnley town UK the ‘Singing-Ringing Tree’ – a unique musical sculpture in the form of a tree appears to bend against the endless winds that pass over the hills. Designed by award-winning architects Tonkin-Liu. The wind produces a low and mellow hum through pipes which are tuned so that they do not disturb the wildlife."

"Looking through this lens also enables us to think about infrastructure in a new way. The era of massive, expensive, centralized projects like the Big Dig in Boston has passed. “Now, with the ability to model dynamic systems, we can show a much more decentralized collection of resources could provide greater benefit,” de Monchaux says. “If, in the 19th century, it was a biological metaphor that fueled the creation of Central and Golden Gate parks, the idea that a city needs hearts and lungs to grow, there’s now a networked metaphor. The city is a dense network of relationships. The best way to provide infrastructure is to not go in with a meat ax but to practice urban acupuncture, finding thousands of different spots to go into.”"

They have those at our local sushi place in Oakland, Kansai. It's very relaxing not to have to deal with being bugged, but to know that you'll be able to get service when you want it.
- Robin Barooah
We saw the buzzers in action at dinner, which was sushi, as well. Only at that place, when the button was pressed it would light up your table number on a bigger board and everyone, from the sushi chef on down, would yell something out, presumably " patron at table 14 pressed button" which made the system slighlty less peaceful. Also, not sure if it is meant to be a reference, but Kansai is the region we are in currently.
- Jon
from iPhone
I'd guess it's a reference. Our Kansai has giant TV screens showing either football games, or MTV, and is too noisy to tell whether the staff shout something when those buttons are pressed!

"If I were a younger man, I would write a history of human stupidity; and I would climb to the top of Mount McCabe and lie down on my back with my history for a pillow; and I would take from the ground some of the blue-white poison that makes statues of men; and I would make a statue of myself, lying on my back, grinning horribly, and thumbing my nose at You Know Who. –Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle (1963)"

The line for Southwest was so long it stretched into the international terminal. A little bit of rain resulted in a 4 hour delay, so I decided to make this video while I waited. Nothing compared to the 24 hour delay I am currently experiencing.

Yeah the battery on my phone died right before the Queen arrived so I didn't take a photo. She was pretty spectacular. I was more excited to finally get on my plane so I didn't wait to get an autograph.
