I really liked that he mentioned his wife gave birth naturally, with a midwife, in a hospital. I think so many women don't realize this is an option. They can have the security of the hospital, with the birth they want.
- Georgia Diehl
Georgia, in some states, midwives are legally not allowed in hospitals.
- Rochelle
Yeah, I heard that, very disappointing. I also heard that many hospitals only allow their approved midwives.
- Georgia Diehl
On Fort Hood, you will only see a midwife, unless you are considered high risk. The army seems surprisingly progressive on these things.

By Jeff Yeager "Jeff, can't we at least celebrate the holiday before you eat the decorations?" I've heard that more than once from my long-suffering wife during our 26-year marriage. You see, cheapskates like to celebrate Halloween and other holidays just like everyone else. But we grimace at wasteful rituals like throwing away a perfectly good pumpkin after using it for only a few days as a decoration. Americans buy more than one billion pounds of pumpkins at Halloween, and the vast majority of those end up in the trash. But at the Green Cheapskate's house, we eat our jack-o-lantern, every last bit of it. While some particularly meaty varieties of pumpkins are specifically grown to be eaten (including Sweet Jack-be-Littles, Cheese Pumpkins, Sugar Pumpkins and some delicious heirloom varieties), any commonly available pumpkin is perfectly edible. Best of all, at Halloween (and immediately after Halloween) you can usually buy pumpkins for less than half a buck a pound. At that price,...

it's also known as "public private initiatives" here in the UK - private companies bid for governmental contracts to provide the services, billed to the government. The problem is that the private companies that win the services are there for the profit and so provide a piss poor level of service for the highest price possible. It gets even muddier when you look at the PPI system used...

"In the past 30 years we’ve learnt more about babies and young children than in the preceding 2,500 years and that has given us new ideas about human nature itself — about knowledge and imagination, truth and consciousness. Thirty years ago most psychologists and philosophers thought that babies and young children were basically defective adults — irrational and egocentric, unable to think logically, take another person’s perspective or reason causally. If you just looked cursorily at babies and young children, as generations of philosophers did, you might well conclude that there was not much going on. If you looked carefully, as generations of mothers and the great psychologist Jean Piaget did, you would start to appreciate how philosophically significant, fascinating and profound children are."

Those attempting to obtain a passport (or leading our country) should be required to present this long version. Where's Obama's?

@Eric - You're not helping the situation by deliberately misrepresenting the claims of "Birthers". Their claims are hardly irrational. I for one accept that Obama is a natural born citizen, but I don't understand why he's hiding his original birth certificate.
- Rob Sterling
@Glen - It is neither an original nor a copy. It is a contemporary certificate that restates some of the information listed in the original document. "Birthers" want to see a copy of the original document, which would contain additional information as well as signatures of relevant officials and possibly medical personnel.
- Rob Sterling
Hi Rob, I LOL at your comment. I was referring to a clip I saw on TV today where a congressman said no documentation had been presented. As in NONE. And I'm like huh? This is what many people think. - Eric @ CS Techcast
@Eric - I LOL at your use of straw men. What was the name of this supposed congressman?
- Rob Sterling
Good. In the meantime, you're still misrepresenting the "birther" demands. Those of us who believe that Obama was born in Hawaii should respect that it is perfectly reasonable for people to want to see a copy of the original 1961 birth certificate rather than the contemporary document you show above. It's amazing to me that Obama has allowed this nonsense to go on for so long and at such tremendous expense, when he could end it with a phone call.
- Rob Sterling
I'm sure showing a birth certificate will make all this go away. Oh wait, if it ain't one thing, it's the other. The larger movement really has nothing to do with the birth certificate. IMHO of course.

It has everything to do with the birth certificate. The whole thing would never have even started if he had done what McCain did and offer up his original certificate to start with. @Eric - The reason Obama is being asked for this is that his father was not a citizen and his mother was not able at the time of his birth (due to her youth) to transfer her citizenship to him if he was born outside the US. There have been several rumors, some misinformation and some actual (very thin) evidence that support the idea that Obama might have been born in Kenya.
