Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. So it's since Tuesday huh? The ultimate thread. How will the thread die then? We must have a limit for that, let's say 24h without one comment.
- Zu from AOD
As a side note, I do have to applaud the endurance and pettiness of those of us on FriendFeed. No one on Facebook gave this status update a second look!
- Mike Nayyar
We pride ourselves in our pettiness and obsessiveness. Um, wait.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Remember. It's not whole Scoble likes. It's who likes Scoble.
- Akiva
According to FriendFeed, that's everyone. And some Twitter marketers and SEO experts.
- Mike Nayyar
Mike will get in the last word. Eventually. Everyone else is an idiot for playing his little game. Me included. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm not actually playing. Or, if I am, I'm playing to lose.
- Akiva
HAHA! You see that? Robert Scoble acknowledges I will eventually win! HAHA! FINALLY! For once in my life, I win! :) :) :) :) Unless Logical shows up...
- Mike Nayyar
Only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
- Tinfoil 2.0
We're testing the limit on the number of comments.
- DGentry
Nah, the FFundercats live chat pushed that one way over the top. We are, however, testing the limits oh how sick people are getting of setting my face.
- Mike Nayyar
This thread has a lot of comments, that must mean Mike is an expert of some kind...or maybe an A-Lister. Must stalk^H^H^H^H^Hinvestigate him...
- Rah-PM 2012
Olympus too? Good thing Logical doesn't know any Japanese mythological figures.
- Mike Nayyar
All right, if you're going to play that way, Raijin AND Ajisukitakahikone are BOTH mad at you. And Raijin was especially unhappy because you interrupted his NOMmage of children's bellybuttons.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Dude, my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Raijin put down the platter.
- Tinfoil 2.0
We'd be content, of course, if you (Mike) issued a public retraction of the assertion in your post, followed by allowing someone else to post the last comment in the thread ;-)

Nicholas, as long as it's not Mike, it's irrelevant.

I'm sad that Logical saw this Facebook status.

You know at some point, expanding this comment will really put a strain on mortal browsers. It already has a 3 second pause to expand it.
- Mark Philpot
I wonder if at some point we will hit a soft limit and FF won't let it keep going. That or they look at this as a great high-bounds test case for the system.
- Sparky, lurking
Great experiment there, I'm somewhat scared opening the thread here. Funny thing, Even the explosion of words spawned through this, making it a wordle madness. http://www.wordle.net/gallery...

I'm scared to expand the comment thread :)

No you just don't know I posted this.
- John D Reasor
cant the person that started this block the comments now? and thereby win.
- Morgan
If you can get buddy buddy with mike and figure out his schedule, you can prevent him from stopping the comments because you'll always be able to get the last word in. We must prevail for great justice!
- Jonathan Hardesty
That would be cheating, and he knows it :)
- Tinfoil 2.0
That's how the FriendFeed Mob rolls. :-D
- Steven Perez
from IM
you didn't disable the comments yet? you could comment and then do it and then you really would get the last word. but then again, that's cheating. and cheaters never prosper.
- Trish Haley
You're not supposed to make sense of it. It exits only as an opaque, monolithic data structure that is constantly being updated and evolving. ;)

Attempting to parse it in a manner that is not approved by FriendFeed, Inc may result in disruption of the space-time continuum, and a series of Bad Things(R) occurring.

Tumblr users...what's your experience with google rankings for your blogs? The one reason I don't use Tumblr properly is because of generally poor search engine rankings. Am I imagining it or are they definitely worse than standard wordpress blogs?
Mine are fine. Google PageRank says I have a 3 but I only launched it a few weeks ago. If you search for internet detour (the site is http://internetdetour.com) it comes up first and I can find my stuff on some other searches. Not terrible at all.
- Sweyn Venderbush
I don't track search rankings for my tumblr blog.
- jbrotherlove
@Sweyn, what about for individual posts? I tried searching for a few of them and couldn't find one on google when just searching by the post title
- Zee.
There's something wrong with Tumblr rankings for sure. Even my empty "coming soon" page with the same address was GR:2 now I'm on tumblr and it's GR:1! Seems like Google is punishing everyone who opts to use Tumblr. The subject domain is http://mindcast.org for example.
- Berk D. Demir
Zee, even with the juice of a newspaper linking to my tumblr blog, it performs so poorly in search results (and this is with custom page names) that I've stopped caring about page rank entirely. What matters is the content being available for easy importation into other services (Friendfeed) and websites (mine or other like minded ones).
- Brandon Mendelson
Shocking Brandon...I need to dig into this and find out why
- Zee.
Some SEO may be needed. See the following. Replace BLOG TITLE as needed.
- aptjauder
Try using these and see how they work for you. YMMV.
- aptjauder
Hey thanks apt, it's not really for me, because i'm quite happy where I am. But i was considering writing a story about why it was the case and how it could be fixed, so that will still help - thank you
- Zee.
My poorly setup and maintained non-SEO optimised WP blog far exceeds hits than my regularly updated Tumblr.
- Threepwood
It's partially about how certain things are set up which matter a lot to Google. For example, mindcast.org uses a consistent title across the board for all posts which makes it very hard for Google to tell them apart. Optimizing <title>, <h1>, meta title and description tags *should* help.
- aptjauder
I am with Jbrotherlove - I don't check the google stuff on it.
- Brent - Yes I am
A Wordpress blog, even a bog standard one without any SEO plugins, is search engine friendly with a simple custom permalink.
- Gilbert Harding
One thing to note. I think WP does generate a sitemap and afaik, there is no way to generate/submit one for tumblr. If someone else knows how to...
- aptjauder
Another reason is that the rss generated by Tumblr cannot be used to submit as a sitemap. The short urls result in a 301 to the long url which google does not like. Complain to tumblr if you care about this. You can see this if you use GWT and look under sitemap details.
- aptjauder
Tumblr is a lot of noise. Most Tumblr blogs are about lolcats and random Rick Astley crap. I could understand how a search engine could dismiss *.tumblr.com as low quality. For best pagerank always have a full yourdomain.com URL so your content can stand alone in indexes.
- Sparky, lurking
Sparky, many folks, including myself, are using full domains for our Tumblr blogs and still getting poor results.
- Brandon Mendelson
Tumblr itself is PR 7 so pretty good. Keep in mind many tumblr blogs do not contain a lot of text which also accounts for lowered results.
- aptjauder
Just found http://tumblrmap.net/ which will generate an xml sitemap of your tumblr blog - I'm trying it out now and see it makes any difference.

I'm thinking I'll have to limit how many comments are displayed when you display comments in-line. Otherwise it takes a long time to display a post with a lot of comments. Expect a new release in the next day or two.

I'll test and tell you if i find any more bugs.
- Sweyn Venderbush
I posted FF4WinMo Release 1.1 which now limits the number of comments displayed to the last 5 comments, newest first.

I just posted FF4WinMo Release 1.2 which corrects an exception that occurs when downloading user images. Added code to download a user image if it does not exist. You can find the update at http://codingsmackdown.tv
- Jim Lavin
I'll be posting FF4WinMo Release 1.3 later tonight. I've made a modification to resize the text to fit all of the text within the control. Reduces the wasted space and looks so much better.
- Jim Lavin
What do you think of moving the comments to a click only option so you would scroll through the timeline, and it shows how many comments each post has. then you click on a view comments buttom and you get to view the comments maybe 10 comments on each page.
- Sweyn Venderbush
I just posted FF4WinMo Release 1.3 on http://codingsmackdown.tv This release now displays all text in a post, no more cut off text.
- Jim Lavin
Sweyn, I was thinking along the same lines. I would still show the last 5 comments but instead of going to post comment dialog I would display all of the comments in the dialog with a menu option to post a comment.

I've been working on some new changes to the application. Should have release later this week.

I admire how open many of the twitterati are to having people show up wherever they are going, and imagine it leads to lots of great contacts, but the conventional thing to do would be to wring your hands terribly at the thought of a creep showing up. Has this strategy of openness ever gone awry for you?

Though Leo Laporte "liked" this bit of news, he has to be at least somewhat jealous as well. Adam would make a great guest anywhere he was willing to sit down and the TWIT network would be a great forum.

As of Saturday my parent's home was still there when my dad left. He stayed on the roof with a hose fighting it by himself. The firefighters helped him fight it for a while. They used a pump to pump water from the swimming pool to fight it but eventually the firefighters gave up. The neighbors house burned down. My dad was able to save our house, at least as of Sat. afternoon. It may be gone now. He was going to try and hike back in on Saturday night in order to bypass the roadblock by the Sherriff, but wasn't able to get back in there.

I think the house may be ok. Well see. On Sat. night when I talked to my mom she said that he'd been able to save the house fighting the fire from the roof. they are all safe. my mom was in ventura giving a seminar and my dad stayed until the fire burned through the property on the canyon. There were still hot spots though that could have flared up. - Bryan R. Adams
yeah. this is the worst fire since the fire that burned through there maybe in 1977 or so? I remember that one too. It was pretty bad. This one seems worse though. The other thing that's terrible are the floods that follow the fires the next winter.

I talked with my dad on the phone for the first time today. He seemed fine about it all. He said it was exciting actually. He was the only one there fighting the fire for a long time. He said it was really quiet except for sounds of the fire. He'd hear a tree fall and yell "timber." He was in pretty good spirits all things considered. He's pretty sure the house is saved and hopes that they might escort residents back in in the next few days sometimes in this part of Big Tujunga Canyon.
