I love this: "Tamagotchi effect: If you take care of your users, the right investors will rally around you and talented hackers will line up to work for you." Graham +1 ;-) - Erhan Erdogan
I like that :). And I appreciated this paragraph in particular: "The curious thing is, this elixir is freely available to any other company. Anyone can adopt 'Don't be evil.' The catch is that people will hold you to it." Friendfeed, clearly, has opened up with clear expectations to "be good." People will hold it (and them, the employees) to that standard, and I think that's awesome :) - Adam Lasnik
I wish more nonprofits operated using the Tamagotchi effect as a basic operating principle. - Allan Benamer

@Paul: Invent a new slogan for FF. You 'll be needing that in future. - Varun Mahajan
"Be Good" produces "make really Good" software applications! woo hoo! Neat article. Very inspiring to see someone take a stand on "Do No Evil" and then go one step further and commit to "Be Good"! - love it! excellent example and role model for aspiring Web App Devs!! Keep up the "good" work!! :-) - Susan Beebe
I don't know why, but when they described PB as "cherubic" I just had to laugh. It was so cute! - April Buchheit

I find it fascinating that there are no comments on the actual Times Blog post but plenty o' comments here and acknowledgement by well over 100 people. Friendfeed power right there. - Jason Toney
Jason, good point, one of the things I value most about FF is this interactivity. - susan mernit
I finally read this. Nice article, Paul. Good luck. - Robert Konigsberg
That Paul Graham's article is one of his best - so true and succinct. I guess, the more social the online world becomes, the better (as in "less evil") will companies need to be. - Nenad Nikolic
She's 91 and she might be Barack's biggest fan in China (as some may readily point out, she is not a hardworking white American, she does not live in a state with a lot of electoral votes, and she was, in fact, accepted into all the elite universities) - Ana
“The Hillary "RFK assassination" story made it to the Sunday newspapers in China. My 91-year-old grandmother (China's biggest Obama supporter) shakes her head and says, "What sort of person with integrity would say such a thing?"”
"But I was deeply dismayed and disturbed that my comment would be construed in a way that flies in the face of everything I stand for - and everything I am fighting for in this election." [snip] "I am running because I still believe I can win on the merits. Because, with our economy in crisis, our nation at war, the stakes have never been higher - and the need for real leadership has never been greater - and I believe I can provide that leadership." - Ana
HRC is a whole bunch of crock. She lies thru her teeth like its second nature in their family. I dont trust her integrity - Peter Dawson
Any other women sick of this talking point: Hillary is running for us? Somehow she is the champion of our cause and her winning the nomination is the only evidence of progress in the feminist fight. - Shellee
Shellee, that talking point would indeed seem to be offensive to women. - Adam Lasnik
she has a very good chance of being president if she is persistent. for one thing she has something she never had before. Respect. She showed a will to fight and to do it on male terms. I'm not a feminist, but I saw strong character that I hadn't seen before when she was Green with Suha Arafat. I am glad she lost though because there is another fighter I like alot. John McCain. Perhaps if she continues to support America, it's allies and the troops then there is a chance for a real vision for health care that most agree with her about. She does seem to improve with age and I'm willing to bet that sympathy will grow for what she is struggling to do. She will improve her character as she grays. She got what she was looking for all year. Not the presidency, but empathy for her ideas... and she has become wise on foreign policy. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
No doubt she has a real vision and I would like to see her leading, but right now I think it is important for America to stay the course and not look like we are backpedaling on Iraq. Especially with all the success in Sadr city this week that was ignored by the media. Hilary is a kinder and wiser sense of what government can do... but now is not the time to be spending domestic social programs. A Democrat in office would be a disaster. We have a war to win and McCain understands the point of alternative fuels.
"Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war."
-Winston Churchill - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
A war to win?? You mean that country we invaded? If anything, the Winston Churchill quotes should be coming from their side. - Ňicķ
I would rather have a good peace than spend trillions trying to win this stupid war. - ⓞnor
Agreeing with @nor, I would rather have supplies for our schools, homes for our homeless, food for our hungry. What's fascinating and extremely depressing is that with the billions we've spent on this fruitless endeavor in Iraq, we *could* have had this. Instead of killing people, we could have been healing, housing, educating people. What a concept. - Adam Lasnik
we invaded europe during WWII. I'm no pacifist. A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject. - Sir Winston Churchill - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
There are a terrible lot of lies going around the world, and the worst of it is half of them are true. -Sir Winston Churchill - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
I am not offended by the talking point that Hillary is running on behalf of women. The primary reason I would vote for Hillary is because I think having a female president would go a long way toward advancing feminism in our country. I'm really glad Hillary ran. - niniane
Yeah, there would have been a blog post if I hadn't made him leave at 5:30... - Ana
oh that's terrible making an employee leave at 5:30 on the first day! then taking them to an NBA game- they are going to have a warped sense of expectations! - Nathan Eckenrode
"After arriving home to Fremont in the wee hours Wednesday from her campaign stint in Indiana, she was back to work the next morning at FriendFeed, where, even for a start-up, the days are more predictable than campaign work." :) - Ana
Congratulations on the interview, Ana. I made sure to highlight your stumping for Obama in Scoble's Qik video from the other day, and Kristine enjoyed meeting you as well. - Louis Gray
Here is a version w/ photos: http://www.mercurynews.com/loc... You have to click on "2" under the photo of the Hillary supporters though. That said, it's not really worth it, since I look sort of strange. Must have caught me in a moment of naive, wide-eyed support :) - Ana
The speech itself talks about the founding fathers, slaves and abolitionists, immigrants, union workers, and other subjugated classes changing their world for the better. While none of those groups are young urbanites, I do feel pretty disenfranchised by our government over the past few decades, so from that standpoint I guess it is about young urbanites, and that's fine with me. - Kevin Fox
kang: Giudiani was going to produce a similar song called No You Can't, but then he decided that he couldn't either, and he withdrew. - j1m
kevin - i support obama over clinton, the orig. speech was great, etc. etc. i just think it's funny that will.i.am didn't cast any old people in his video. - ƃuɐʞ
Ahh, fair enough. :-) I feel old for not recognizing most of the people in the video. - Kevin Fox
kareem abdul jaffar is not in his 20s or 30s - Shakeel Mahate
i imagine a music video message is also targetted primarily at those in their 20s and 30s though, right? - Dan Hsiao
There is another version targeted at jazz fans in their 50s, but it's an instrumental - j1m
