So far, that's pretty much it. I've used the wall widget to put up a glorified guest book, and I have hopes that Google will pull their heads out of their rear and offer me updates to the sites I've joined either in my GProfile or reader. We'll see...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
To me, FB Connect is really about a social experience connecting to your FB social network and allowing you to comment and bring those conversations within the site and also onto your FB profile. Google Friend Connect just allows others to connect to you and to others on the site, but does not leverage your existing social network. Basically it's like having a chat within your site, so you don't have to implement one. But yes, it does look like MyBlogLog.
- Alvin
I've been wondering that exact same thing...where's the value to the blogger who implements it? Is it just new and shiny?
- Sarah Perez
I wish it were. It has none of MyBlogLog's coolest features -- like any of them. I'm experimenting with it at SmallBusiness.com (thanks Steve, for being the first person to join) and all it is now is: 1. A thing you can join. 2. A guest book commenting thing. MyBlogLog at least has the display of registered members who merely show up. However, what MyBlogLog also has is a Brand that sounds like its something that only bloggers would use. Another thing Friend Connect is supposed to have is OpenSpace gadgets.
- Rex Hammock
For now, both FriendConnect and Facebook Connect are just new and shiny. However, in the near future we will probably start seeing new features in these widgets that take advantage of the network.
- Rob Diana
I thought the same thing too, which is why I haven't installed either
- Sally Church
Do these products negate things like Disqus and Intense Debate?
- Kenley Neufeld
Stay tuned .... with the Twitter connection upcoming, it'll be far from a clone.
- Charlie Anzman
Kenley: I can't see GFC (or MyBlogLog, for that matter) really directly impacting distributed commenting systems all that much. This is because GFC et al share the same fundamental weakness: the inconvenience of having to individually join each site you wish to participate in. With Disqus/Backtype/etc, however, you have one commenter profile which follows you wherever you go within the community. If a site implements Disqus, bingo, you're already on board. [...]
- Derrick Burns
The only thing that's missing, in terms of establishing site-relevant user communities, is to take that existing distributed discussion infrastructure and building a tracking and display front end for it, such that a site admin would be able to display currently-active users, most-active users, etc, and allow the users to interact with one anothers' profile data in the same way that GFC does.
- Derrick Burns
Good comments Derrick; thank you. I wonder if distributed commenting systems might move in the direction of allowing users to interact with each other. At least those who create an account with one of those services.Should be interesting to see how this all develops, but Google is clearly the elephant in the room and has been for a while.
- Kenley Neufeld
Kenley: Google as the elephant in the room: There's some catchy artwork in there, I just know it. But you're absolutely right. Which leads me to speculate on how long it will be before the big G scoops up Intense Debate or one of its competitors and turns it into an integrated community-in-a-box system.
- Derrick Burns
Gregory: *laugh* As long as the music in question is not ABBA.
- Derrick Burns
Thank you ! I couldn´t get my head around why those Google widgets were such a big deal. Actually would make my blog even worse because intensedebate requires another login (for the time being). Btw, what´s that open source alternative to FB and GF Connect I think somebody mentioned here ?
- Thomas Bøhm
It does. I just signed up because it seemed to be going around. I figure I will test it out for a few months and see how it goes.

Not really, MyBlogLog is different in the fact that it has a dedicated website for everything. With Google Connect you build the community with your site.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I joined a number of sites last evening after seeing links posted here. Then I clicked on a few people in the widget on the sites, and found more blogs to link to. So, I would say it can only help blogs to reach more prospective readers, even if one ends up grabbing the RSS feed.
- Ian May
FriendConnect also provides full OpenSocial support and API to developers. FriendConnect is a development tool more than it is a set of widgets.
- Jesse Stay
That's what I said. And yet people are still using it. Google branding seems to be all it has going for it. I can't find any functionality pros though.
- Tamar Weinberg
Eh... MyBlogLog is Yahoo! They might spoil their marketing power on features which aren't implemented yet, but they still have some power. :)

8. Type about:internets into Google Chrome’s address bar. This will only work with Windows XP as Google Chrome launches the pipes screensaver inside the tab.
- Mike Reynolds
If you try the about:internets thing under Vista, you get a "The tubes are clogged!" message, as the pipes OpenGL screensaver cannot be started.

Looks like a couple of millimeters to me! How many people felt cheated? This appears to be a photo of a clear pool of liquid, with light shining off it, and some pebbles. Its not. The liquid is identified on the right hand photograph by the tiny arrow in the lower left hand corner. Its still quite impressive though.

No offense intended to you, Zee (or anyone else here) but I actually find this image more offensive than the "Abu Ghraib Coffee Table." I wonder, did the photographer offer this man recompense for the use of his likeness?

I went to Emory (aka Coca Cola University) and a construction crew brought a Pepsi machine on campus. School threatened to pull the contract.

And the construction crew was never seen again.

My fiancee and I both work from home and have saved thousands in gas expenses over the past few years. Yes, we have higher home expenses, but we still net a gain. Plus, our stress levels are down while our productivity is up.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I would love to see employers suggest that their employees work from home one day a week. If we cut down the commuting traffic by 20% it would be a beautiful thing for everyone (and their great grandchildren).
- Brian Jarvis
As a full-time telecommuter, I'd recommend that you still find time to get in the office on average of at least once a week. There's a LOT to be said for the focus that having other people around that are committed to the same general cause as you are. There's also something about "face time" that demands your focus and can't be replicated with telework without some kind of shared location.
- Ben Madsen
Another comment I had after reading the article is that I think many (especially larger) employers still have that roadblock of "keeping tabs" on their employees. I think many upper- and middle-management people don't know how they would interact or could interact with teleworkers without staff meetings and in-person visits. After all, it's much harder to just read somebody's voice than their body-language as they're speaking.
