@Ralph - a little out of our budget. Plus, I think Tad would challenge the kid to a duel for those if it came down to it. ;)
- Lindsay is :)
my son is 2 months from being a year old. The simplest things bring him joy. I always buy things with light and sounds to drive the parents batty. :-)

Maybe baby drumset. Something really freaking loud and annoying... Eh, my friend does Aikido with me. Maybe something nice and quiet. :)

oh kid is 1yr old ?..best thing is to buy a 2 gift coupon(s) , where 1 can be used in a toy shop and the other for cloths ..

A wrapped empty box. We all know that no matter how cool or expensive the toy, a toddler will play with the box for hours!

I'm leaning heavily toward blocks. I know when Avynn was 1 year old he was more entertained with the packages stuff came in than the stuff itself.

You would not stand a child on a real drumset. I gave a drumset pad (mute) with a pair of sticks to a 3 years old son of a friend of mine and she got crazy with that, while parents are still alive and still friends of mine

Automoblox -- beautifully designed wooden toys, or Eric Carle books. Or if you wanna freak the parents out, Barbie.
- Oldengrey (Jay)
A savings bond for college. Never too early :)

The best toys for 1 year olds are either sharp or highly flammable. Wild, carnivorous animals work good too.

Stuff that makes noise when you move it.

Ikea has some great wooden pull toys for this age - just something simple works best for that age.

nathan beat me to the uglydoll suggestion. Honestly though, I ALWAYS buy books or games. No more plastic. We have enough of that in the world.

Just bought our 2 year old nephew the Fisher Price little people garage. It says it's for ages 1-4.
