I took this photo on July 4, 2005. Location: Brooklyn, overlooking NYC. This year, they're doing the Macy's fireworks demonstration on the west side of Manhattan. - Tamar Weinberg via Bookmarklet

Great shot! I'm looking forward to lots of firework photo's in the coming days. - Michael Fidler
I'm going to miss not having that view. I'm actually going to miss going out to photograph altogether. I'm celebrating the 4th from home tomorrow night. - Tamar Weinberg
We're in NY, but driving to Philadelphia for the day tomorrow, so I'm not sure we'll be back in time for the fireworks :) - Aviv
btw Tamar, do you know which "special spot in brooklyn" the post refers to? We're in Brooklyn Heights so will probably just head to the promenade which is walking distance. - Aviv

Dear FF: I know you can go to /filter/discussions to find articles you liked and commented on. How about separating the two? Sometimes I "like" something in the moment but don't want to refer back to it. I'd like to see the threads I *only* commented upon (and not liked UNLESS there are comments) on some page. Does it exist?
If so, it's not easily findable. If not, it should exist. - Tamar Weinberg
both links are on your profile page - Dobromir Hadzhiev
If you click on your name, you can select just your comments by clicking the your number of comments and the same with likes - Johnny Worthington
ha, then it was a stupid question - BUT the link on my sidebar takes me to /discussions and not /comments. This should be on the sidebar, not the profile page. I don't navigate to my profile page to find my comments or anything else for that matter. It's almost an extra click for us and isn't very user-friendly in that regard. - Tamar Weinberg
Indeed, but it should still remain on the profile page as well. I can use this technique to see all your comments :D - Johnny Worthington
I've known about the /comments link as I've referenced it before, but to be honest, I always thought they were the same as /discussions since only one link shows up on my sidebar. - Tamar Weinberg
Johnny, I'm not saying it should be removed from the profile page. I just think it'd be easier for me to navigate to my own comments by seeing it on my sidebar as well :) - Tamar Weinberg
Indeed. I would like to see My Discussions changed to 'My Activity' and 'My Discussions' migrated to all those items I have made a comment on, including those posts I generate but have not commented on yet. - Johnny Worthington
Better yet, it should possibly be more broken down -- "My Activity" should be something like "My Likes/Comments" instead of just "Discussions" and "My Discussions" should be listed as well (and IMO, it should *not* include "Likes"). But surely I've just confused things a lot more. ;) Perhaps a mouseover "explanation" would do. - Tamar Weinberg
Search will give those results search------like:tamar will bunch together all your likes, comment:tamar will do the same for your comments. But if we add two options side bar, it will be crowded????? - - Wins Fern
Wins, why would it be crowded? If I add a billion customized feeds, they ALSO show up on my sidebar. I don't agree with that logic. Having to search via arbitrary search operators is a pita IMO. - Tamar Weinberg
How you customize your feed is to your liking, but global changes is another thing. - Wins Fern
This isn't feed customization. It's usability. Clearly, the /discussions link is NOT equivalent to the /comments link. Putting only one there and not the other assumes they're the same. Both should be there. It's one single extra line on the sidebar and shouldn't be perceived as making things crowded. - Tamar Weinberg
Not being argumentative, but you can do that seach once and save that search. It will be shown in the side bar below groups, as saved search -in red color. - Wins Fern
Wins, I understand what one can do to access that data, but it'd be nice if it was universal. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has this question. Speaking of which, I want to remove a Friends list and can't figure out how even when reading FF's help document. Ideas? (Edit: the blue "Delete" button on the green background was hard to spot.) My point is that FF is a great service but there are usability issues. - Tamar Weinberg
And another thing which isn't actually a "usability" issue - if I start a thread and don't actually comment on it, it doesn't show up under /comments. Heck, it doesn't show up under /discussion either. But I'd still want to track it. In order to do so, I basically have to write a comment on the thread. Again, it's not intuitive. There are so many different URLs I have to access to find everything I've actually physically contributed to FF, it seems. - Tamar Weinberg

Here are some new Gmail requests:
1. Let me enable/disable signatures at the click of a button. I don't want Gmail always to display my signature. Some people don't always need to know who I am. - Tamar Weinberg
2. Let me undelete an email I may have accidentally deleted from the Spam folder. At least, give me 5 seconds to realize that I screwed up and hit Z to undo. It should work just like the feature that lets me unsend emails for a 5 second duration. - Tamar Weinberg
3. If I have multiple email addresses that all go into my gmail account and I respond from XXX@domain.com, please do not show the "From" line to be "From: mygmailaddress@gmail.com on behalf of XXX@domain.com". It looks stupid. Further, if Gmail wants to actually *control* my email addresses, it doesn't tempt me to want to utilize this super cool feature. - Tamar Weinberg
4. If you're letting us use POP for other email accounts, pull the email from ALL folders on that account, not just the Inbox. I'm literally moving ALL my emails out of the folders I created within Hotmail and throwing them into the Inbox just so Gmail can find and subsequently store the emails. If this is not a limitation of the POP protocol, please address. - Tamar Weinberg
add folders like yahoo - Allen Stern
Allen, that's been a request for eleventy billion years. I think Gmail thinks labels are sufficient. - Tamar Weinberg
I could come up with supporting subscription via IMAP. Currently Gmail duplicates e-mails as they go into the All Mail "folder" as well as in the folders that simulate labels. In the end - I don't want to see "All Mail" on my IMAP client at all. - Oliver Bouchard
5. This is more of a bug than a request but when I have emails selected via the check box and then hit the "S" to star the email, it applies the star to a completely different email (the first in the Inbox). - Tamar Weinberg
The folders issue is complicated. Gmail can make labels behave as much like folders as possible, but you can't have folders and conversation threading. They're mutually incompatible unless you want a conversation jerked out of the folder and into the inbox whenever a reply comes in, or you want replies to miss the inbox and get buried in the folder. - Kevin Fox
6. If I have an email selected that has a label and select 3 more unlabeled emails but want to apply the same label to the 3, let me do that without removing that label first. I know that if you select bold and unbold text in an app like MS Word and then press Ctrl B, the bold will go away until you Ctrl+B it (in which case everything becomes bold), but the process is lengthier on Gmail and it would be smart to assume that you want to actually label all of the selected emails. - Tamar Weinberg
7. Muting doesn't work very well for two reasons: (a) sometimes I mute emails and can't figure out how to unmute them. I move them to the Inbox but it still is labeled as "Muted"; (b) Gmail claims that emails get muted unless you're the *actual* recipient of the emails (as in it's being sent to your gmail account). Sometimes, people just want to shut that off. Let them. - Tamar Weinberg
8. Let me search emails that were sent between a specific date. Really, that should be simple. - Tamar Weinberg
9. Make search operators easy to find, perhaps in the shortcut window (or an extension of that) when you press the ? key. I want to know that label:unread means that I can find unread emails. I also want to know how to find emails with PDF attachments. - Tamar Weinberg
10. I'd like to sort search results and other emails by size if possible so that I can find problematic emails and ensure that my account stays under quota. - Tamar Weinberg
(More to be added to this thread as I experience or remember them. Would love for FF folks to add to this list!) - Tamar Weinberg
html / image-enabled signatures. some very good bookmarklets already do the job, but make it native! - Jean-Charles VERDIE
5 isn't a bug. The 's' shortcut is defined as "add a star to the thread that is currently selected by the cursor." The cursor is the small solid black arrow next to a message in your inbox. To see where the cursor is, press 'j' and 'k' while looking at your inbox and you should see it move around. - Chieze Okoye
Also, I just tested and 6 doesn't seem to happen. If you select emails where some have a specific label and others don't, then click the 'Label' button and choose that label, the first click of the label changes the state from "some have the label" to "all have the label." The second click then goes to "none have the label." - Chieze Okoye
Also, regarding #8, you can do so by using the operators "in:sent before:yyyy/mm/dd after:yyyy/mm/dd" I think. But your subsequent point in #9 is well taken. It should be easier, definitely, to find the search operators, but they have improved discovery of those operators significantly if you turn on the "Search Autocomplete" labs feature, which you may not have known about. That thing is brilliant. - Chieze Okoye
1, 2, 3, 7, and 10 (though I've never even come close to my quota), I definitely agree with you on. I don't use POP, so I don't really care about 4, but it's a good point. - Chieze Okoye
Chieze, thanks for that re#5 - makes sense but is definitely not intuitive. And re#8 - so frustrating that there aren't dropdown menus or search features for that. Why should one have to remember those operators? I'll have to try that labs feature. - Tamar Weinberg
No, 1 - awesome, I agree with you. Gmail is Gmail but don't want to see any similarity with Yahoo's email service - Yahoo Mail service totally sucks, whatever folder or anything. No. 8 - I'm looking this features too. As well, "I'm looking, when suddenly someone watching to the screen, if Gmail's Mail is open, then within a click I can fade all things or by another click I can move to normal view" I don't like, when someone seeing my Open Mail Box. Thanks - Technology News
Tamar, no problem! 8^) I do agree with you on the intuitiveness. - Chieze Okoye
#3 is a bug in Outlook (it doesn't show up that way anywhere else). - Michael Leggett
Michael, are you sure? I'm sure I've seen that in the Gmail interface itself. - Tamar Weinberg
I think you only see #4 in 'quoted text' in Gmail - we sent from an Outlook client. I don't think there's a way for Gmail to fix this. - Joel
Integrate Friendfeed/Google Social Graph API. When I compose a mail, or view a thread, show the combined Friendfeed of all participants. I want context. - Lars Trieloff
@Tamar - agree, need the ability to quickly specify a signature including no signature at all. Outlook and Apple Mail both allow for this and makes a huge difference. - Mayuresh Walke
"I don't think there's a way for Gmail to fix this." Why's that? Is it because of how Gmail handles the headers of the email? I guess that means they should "fix up" the headers. - Tamar Weinberg

2. Fill out your info or fake info. - Tamar Weinberg
3. In the Comments section, please say the following (copy and paste should be fine, but I'd prefer a little more diversity so that Apple doesn't think I'm spamming them) - Tamar Weinberg
"Apple: it seems many of the games i use on my [iPhone/iPod Touch] mute my MP3s that are playing with Apple's native player. There is no option in Apple's control panel to override these app settings that affect my sounds and I want my music to take priority. Please address this concern by letting users specify in the [iPhone/iPod Touch] settings to not let app sounds take precedence." - Tamar Weinberg
4. Hit Send. - Tamar Weinberg
5. PROFIT! - Tamar Weinberg
and done - Glen Campbell
Tamar: I haven't run into too much of this - except for apps that involve sound. The thing that is really annoying is not being able to listen to music while playing games - for example, you can't listening to music or a podcast while playing tetris. If I am going to play a mindless game like tetris it would be great to listen to music but you can't - all you can do is either mute audio or listen to the annoying tetris sound effects :( - Mike Bracco
Mike, that's EXACTLY my issue. See related getsatisfaction complaint: http://getsatisfaction.com/apple... - Tamar Weinberg
Mike, to follow up - the apps should NOT turn off your MP3 player. But many apps do. Some don't. Those are the games I end up playing. Sadly, games like Crash Bandicoot, Topple, Diner Dash, Cake Mania, the Stone of Destiny, etc. do... and those games are addictive, so I hear stupid sound effects that get into my head after the addiction sets in. It's silly in retrospect but it's goddarnit annoying. - Tamar Weinberg
This is exactly why I want people to complain to Apple. They need to change this in a future iteration of their app software. 3.0 should've fixed it. Please submit your concern to Apple -- the more people who do, the better. - Tamar Weinberg
Left a comment at Apple's site per your instructions. You are very passionate about this issue! - Bill Kinney
Tamar: I will check it out. I think that the reality is that the iPhone is capable of so much stuff but Apple puts the locks down on a bunch of it for a lot of reasons whether it's battery life, user experience, reliability etc... Case it point is the recent news that the iPhone's new camera is capable of capturing 720P video but Apple doesn't allow it (probably b/c of battery life or... more... - Mike Bracco
Determination and new mommyhood crankiness work very well together, Bill :) - Tamar Weinberg
Mike, I hope, but it's possible they just didn't realize it. My goal is to get as many people to submit a complaint as possible. The best part? You don't have to actually own an iPod touch/iPhone to use this form. So tell your mother, sister, brothers, sons, daughters, teachers, exterminators, gardeners, and everyone else to submit this request. ;) - Tamar Weinberg
I'm on it! :) Just get Scoble to send it to his army and you should be good..haha - Mike Bracco
As for my biggest iPhone gripe at the moment it's that there is no front facing camera - I hope that comes with next hardware rev! - Mike Bracco
Yeah - hardware is a problem I guess. I don't have an iPhone - just a 1st and 2nd gen iPod Touch (I never went to AT&T). I'm hoping a software upgrade isn't so hard for Apple to consider :( But it's been 18 months or so. - Tamar Weinberg
bumpity bump. - Tamar Weinberg
I tried this out today (finally). It doesn't seem to happen in Trailrunners. I would have tried more stuff out today, but Trainrunners kinda has a hold on my soul. As soon as I recharge, I'll try something else. I'm still going to submit this, though. This sounds fixable to me. - Ha3rvey
I have no apps on my phone. Foursquare, Midomi, Sudoku... need to get this pedometer thing. None of them have sounds, I guess. - anna
I guess I'd probably need to get an iPhone before this issue could bother me. - DGentry
Even if it doesn't bother you, please report it :) Ha3rvey - yeah, most of these are actually games that cost $3+ (which sucks, since I invested in a lot of them). As an update, Apple is offering me a $501 (yes, five hundred and one) "refund" for all the apps I bought. However, all I want is the fix to this problem. I could do about the money if I could be content with this problem being solved. - Tamar Weinberg
Nighttime bump. Friends, please do this and pass it on. It doesn't take much effort on your part. - Tamar Weinberg

HELLO WALL. HOW ARE YOU? - Tamar Weinberg
14 likes and 20+ comments is hardly talking to a wall, Tamar. Unfortunately, I don't have an iPhone and I'm not getting one soon, so for me to complain about an issue that I've never dealt with and don't plan on dealing with would be disingenuous. - Alex Scoble
Isn't it also possible that this isn't a "bug?" App makers have the ability to allow the iPod to play over their app's sounds. Providing a global option to allow it sort of overrides the app maker's preference, no? - Kevin Pedraja
Kevin, I spoke to an app developer who didn't know it was possible. Plus, to be quite honest, who cares about the damn app maker's preferences? *I* am the end user. *I* made the purchase. Screw the app maker. There. I said it. - Tamar Weinberg
hurrah - anna
And Kevin, if people actually bitch about it, I think it WOULD be addressed. The question is - are you willing to file a bug report (or if you will, an enhancement request) as outlined above? I just need variable IP address reports so it doesn't look like I was the only one with this issue. As one of the guys in Apple corporate told me, "We get customer requests and input all of the time but ultimately we prioritize improvements based on input from multiple customers and not one." - Tamar Weinberg
I am a passive Seattle-ite. I don't like to make waves or be involved in any sort of controversy. But I'll file a bug report for you because, well, you seem really agitated about this and I don't like to see anyone so upset. ;) - Kevin Pedraja
haha. Thanks. It's not going to make waves on Apple's side, I can assure you. If bloggers covered it, maybe it would, but a simple feature request/bug request is the easiest course of action at present. Better than being idle and letting me stay agitated :D - Tamar Weinberg
HI GUYS! How's your weekend going? Got free time? ;) - Tamar Weinberg
