I just noticed that a relatively active FriendFeeder unsubscribed from my feed. My guess is because even though you can hide junk, people still don't know how (or are too lazy to). Since this has been an ongoing concern of mine for awhile, I think it's about time ... [continued]
...that I make two separate FriendFeed accounts: one for "more interesting" conversation (this account) and one for all my other social media fluff (Reddit, Plurk, StumbleUpon -- perhaps, and Digg).
- Tamar Weinberg
I am still irked by the possibility of being too noisy.
- Tamar Weinberg
You mean like Tamar1 and Tamar2? I would subscribe to all and then hide everything. :-)
- Louis Gray
That inherently means there is a flaw in the FriendFeed system if you are forced to do that
- Nick O'Neill
I'm not feeling "forced," Nick. I just think that people like other items of mine. Some may like my social media stories, but others may want less clutter. Even to myself, my own feed is way too cluttered. I reflect on my daily activities and wonder how I did it all. (And Louis, you rock. :P )
- Tamar Weinberg
Using "Friend Feeder Read Later" script for greasemonkey makes it easier to filter the info, and hide what you dont like, and save what you do.
- James Fridley
just create pvt room and pull in the Reddit, Plurk, StumbleUpon -- perhaps, and Digg). stuff.. thats what I do. And I still a single user id :) - no need for multiple accounts !
- Peter Dawson
James, thanks. I have FriendFeed 100+ but it doesn't seem to be working. The problem is more (to me) that it appears that other people are filtering out my junk -- they don't want to be arsed to install a new Greasemonkey script or use NoiseRiver or any of the other applications. I think two separate profiles is the only way to reconcile this ongoing internal conflict in my mind :) (This is not my first post on the subject.)
- Tamar Weinberg
Peter, but do people ever see it? I see that few people have an interest in that content. I'd much rather them look at content like this post, for example. I think that the good stuff gets lost my 300+ daily diggs, Stumbles, Plurks, and Reddits (combined, of course!)
- Tamar Weinberg
Tamar - I have always edited my feed (when there are no comments). I realize that's time consuming but hopefully there will be an easier way in the future.
- Charlie Anzman
Eh, yeah, I'm not trying to overload myself even more, Charlie. In the meantime, I'm dropping Plurk, Reddit, and Digg. I'll consider the others later.
- Tamar Weinberg
@Tamer, no other users dont see the post /entry . ITs FORMYEYES ONLY status in my pvt echo chamber :)- . I have over 80K feeds segmented into various rooms and aggregating the whole social media networl site. When I find something interesting, I just share it into the approx myfeed with a comment. Simple
- Peter Dawson
Understood. I don't want to hide it *entirely* but I want to have two separate FriendFeed "identities" -- one for more professional and ongoing dialogue and one for more leisurely/personal stuff. I kind of clumped both my professional and personal selves into this FriendFeed account, and the outfit feels a bit weird. To that end, I just dropped the aforementioned services (and Mixx too).
- Tamar Weinberg
I hide almost every service from everybody, and only like/participate in a narrow range of topics. Maybe that person just isn't interested in the same things as you? For example, if someone only talks about iphone, twitter, etc for two pages of their feed i unsubscribe. No offense to iphone users.
- sergiooo
Personally I am going to avoid multiple feeds, multiple accounts, and multiple identities (as I have tried this in the past) and frankly the time that it takes to manage all my various accounts really is a huge time burden. This is why I use friendfeed in the first place. I needed a place to do it all in one place. I do think that a filter like that of IdentiSPY's track might help weed out the dinner remarks (for those that want to, but not sure how that would work here...
- James Fridley
Tamar, there are a lot of reasons why people unsubscribe from other folks, especially people popular on the site. In fact, I unsubscribed from Robert Scoble for a while just to see how much of his stuff I still saw through FOAF. Also, are you subscribed to this person's feed?
- Phil G
I'm not sure why s/he did it (yes, I know them) -- and yes, I'm subscribed to that feed. The individual was also subscribed to me at one point since there's an email notification in my inbox. I'm not offended at all; I'm just trying to make better sense of how I use FriendFeed (mostly for myself). I'll put it this way: I probably wouldn't subscribe to my other stuff!
- Tamar Weinberg
I've had subscriptions drop for no reason at all sometimes. I've had to resubscribe to some people 4 or 5 times. It could just be a glitch in the system. I even had to resubscribe to my own wife.
- Thomas Hawk
Tamar: I have people subscribe, un-subscribe, re-subscribe over and over LOL. I turned off my email notifications and run friendven once every few weeksk or so... btw, why don't you ask them, if you know them? :)
- Mona Nomura
Well, wanting to present your best face on FriendFeed, that I can understand. :)
- Phil G
Tamar, you keep saying your feed is noisy, but I just don't see it. Maybe it's noisy to someone who subscribes to like....20 people, but I think they should probably just unsubscribe from FriendFeed if that's the case.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
I had to unsub from one person I really like simply because I couldn't keep up. I don't want to hide entire services to get around things, and sometimes when someone goes on a tear, you lose a bunch of things.
- Cyndy
People's social network behavior is fun to watch (since I've only been on SNs for 1 yr 1 month). 81 people have unsubscribed to me on FriendFeed (of which 30 resubscribed) - 7%. The percentage used to be 2%, but I've got 390 followers that I haven't had time to follow back. Many people seem to refollow after I get around to checking out their feed. I just don't like "blind" refollowing and want to see people's stuff first.
- Mitchell Tsai
At least one person unfollowed due to the Olympics (maybe that accounts for the burst of 30 unfollows since the last time I checked). Sometimes people block also. I think hide/sub-unsub/block-unblock are very useful features, but we maybe should remember than some people feel "hurt" or are socially offended (e.g. expecting follow me - follow you). Mona posted once about the "like 1 - like 1 back" behavior of some.
- Mitchell Tsai
I LIKE a bit of noise! You can always scroll past a story if you're not interested, and I have FF in a Firefox sidebar thing which means the stories are pretty small unless I click on 'em
- Michael Moran
splitting feeds will annoy you as much as having them in one does now. go for it, test it, just make sure to avoid double postings. (btw it much more annoys me to have your stuff in the mashable friendfeed) due the structuring of ff I never see your massive diggs unless I expand them. just make sure to announce it for a while your split user so we notice and can subscribe to the new one as well. ;))
