As you may remember, I previously urged you NOT to get the G1 Android phone (http://www.bladam.com/main...). I'm proud and really happy to note that there are now Android phones (including the DROID) that I think are just awesome. If I were in the market for a new phone, I'd seriously, happily consider the DROID. Check it out! :)
- Adam Lasnik
And this is probably a good time for a friendly reminder/disclaimer. I work for Google. I am not on the Android team. I am speaking for me here, not my employer, not my parents, not harvey the invisible rabbit, not the illuminati.......
- Adam Lasnik
I can't wait to be in a situation that will enable me to afford a DROID. I so want one.
- Jaemi Kehoe
from IM
I hear ya, Jaemi. Especially without contract, these smart phones (or "app phones" as David Pogue is now calling them) tend to be crazy expensive. But for the patient... those willing to be early-but-not-earliest adoption, I think much cheaper prices can be had.
- Adam Lasnik
Claudia, different. Consensus seems to be that it's slightly less flashy / less polished, but offers more features and functionality and a much nicer screen. Also, it's on a different carrier: Verizon (instead of AT&T).
- Adam Lasnik
ah, we don't have Verizon in Canada. Is it a better carrier?
- Claudia Petrilli
In terms of service, from what I've heard, T-Mobile > Verizon > AT&T, and in terms of coverage and call quality, Verizon > AT&T > T-Mobile. At my house I need to go outside sometimes to get AT&T coverage, but Verizon works everywhere. I suspect any of them are better than Rogers ;( but don't have enough first-hand experience to be sure.
- Amit Patel
To add to that: I'd be using Verizon if it weren't for AT&T. And everyone else in the house would be using the iPhone if it weren't for AT&T. They all laugh when my phone doesn't connect and theirs does. But then I laugh when they can't do anything interesting with their phones ;)
- Amit Patel
Are you guys wishing for a world where phone choices are independent of carrier choices?
- Peng-Toh
Absolutely, Peng-toh! Do you think that's inevitable? In the U.S. it'd be challenging due to implementation issues... specifically that Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T/T-Mobile networks work on different frequencies, so it's actually impossible to use a phone on both Verizon and T-mobile at present :(. The folks in Europe and most of the rest of the world who standardized on GSM are undoubtedly laughing at us right now :(.
- Adam Lasnik
"Don't be put off by hip/edgy marketing" makes me giggle every time I read it.
- EricaJoy
It hadn't occurred to me the droid wasn't GSM. I forgot there were non-GSM carriers. Even though I rarely travel outside the US, I don't think I'd want a phone that only worked here. I wonder how much Verizon is paying Motorola not to let T-Mobile & AT&T sell a GSM version of the droid.
- Seth
Seth, it's possible that you're making incorrect assumptions :) Remember, hardware companies can't just instantly create a phone that'll work on all U.S. networks.
- Adam Lasnik
There is a GSM droid coming. Motorola isn't going to ignore the rest of the world which is more profitable.
- Peng-Toh
Where I am, phones are not allowed to be locked to a carrier and you can get phones that support both CDMA and all forms of GSM. It is just a matter of hardware costs. You should blame FCC for not having the guts to fight for the consumer.
- Peng-Toh
You can always buy a phone that's not locked to the carrier in the US. The problem is, the prices for the service all factor in subsidizing a phone, which means that even if you bought a phone that's unlocked, you don't get a discount on the service (or even an elimination of the activation fee). The result is that everybody buys a phone through a carrier. It's as though all cars were sold assuming that you'd pay for the car partly through buying gas from the company that sold you the car.
- Piaw Na
Here, phones are subsidized if you sign up for a plan but the phone is not locked. There is a healthy resale market for new/used phones as a result.
- Peng-Toh
This could be very good! "Google software luminaries such as Unix co-creator Ken Thompson believe that they can help boost both computing power and programmers' abilities with an experimental programming language project called Go. And on Tuesday, they're taking the veil of secrecy off Go, releasing what they've built so far and inviting others to join the newly open-source project."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
What do you think, Paul? I know it's early, but Python latched on at Google... Think this is a response? And just on a lark, do you think Go may be headed for the browser at some point (to replace javascript)? Many of us have wondered if Chrome will take a stab at reinventing/reworking the web stack. Go feels more like a back-end tool, but wondering what came to your mind when you saw this...
- Christopher Galtenberg
Christopher, Python is nice, but we need a new system language, something high-performance to replace C/C++. This may be it.
- Paul Buchheit
My first reaction was oh yay, another C like language with brackets to make it acceptable. Having Rob Pike and Thompson on the team is impressive but makes me think of a plan9 resurrection. Using CSPs though is pretty cool and it looks like it supports mobile tasks.
- Todd Hoff
"Specifically, Go uses a technology dating back to the 1960s called CSP, or communicating sequential processes, that handles interactions among a set of cooperating programs, Pike said. The technology made an appearance in programming languages such as Occom and Erlang, but it generally hasn't been applied in systems programming."
- Paul Buchheit
If Google uses this for internal projects, that will give it a big advantage over something like plan9 in terms of being practical (not to mention the fact that it's free software, which plan9 was not, and a programming language, not an OS).
- Paul Buchheit
I am very excited about this, it's not genius or rocket science but it maybe the language to put alongisde C/C++ for real. I thought it was going to be D, maybe this is it
- Lawrence Oluyede
D seems too fragmented to be usable. All my hopes are on Go now :)
- Paul Buchheit
And note that the language is designed to be IDE independent.
- Piaw Na
Plan9 was a set of composable tools. In this case Google is providing the OS and the tools.
- Todd Hoff
Please ; at the end of lines... (I hate languages without ; for some psychological reasons)
- Ozgur Demir
I am no fan of language features designed to ease parsing but i suppose that's important for a system language? But it's hardly a user (i.e. programmer)-centric design. I think they should have drawn more from Scala (for concurrency model) and Io (for a beautiful syntax) instead of the messy, old languages they chose. Luckily, it's not designed for my needs so i'll never have to worry about it.
- ·[▪_▪]·
@ozgurdemir I agree. Either require them or don't. Don't make them optional in some cases. It confuses what programmers generally expect of a programming language: consistency.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Just checked and hated it. Sorry guys, it's not about the rest of the language.. it's just the ;'s.
- Ozgur Demir
while checking it, I noticed how much I love C / Java syntax and how lame to trying to change it just for to make a new product different.
- Ozgur Demir
@Paul you should know better than to confuse a language with its implementation! The people working on this all hail from the C/Java lineage and I don't know...may be fast but generally C is a hassle and Java is too dumbed-down. Trying to fix the mistakes they made in the past. Wonderful...
- Rudolf Olah
For god's sake, who cares what the syntax looks like? What matters is whether it solves useful problems or not. It's designed to clean up a lot of the problems stemming from the legacy of C[++], compile fast, execute fast, be appropriate for systems programming, and have good primitives for concurrency. Those are good goals in my book, and they fill a much-needed niche.
- Joel Webber
I thought it was kinda weird the way the video highlighted how fast it compiles. Compilation speed is great, and the vid was impressive, but I've never seen a language launch where that was highlighted so much. "Look, it compiles fast!!!!!! Oh, BTW, we are trying to solve concurrency".
- Nick Lothian
@Ozgur: Sure, but as long as the syntax isn't broken in some way, or ambiguous (VB6 comes to mind), it's surely much less important than what the language is capable of (compile speed, execution speed, what can be expressed, etc). Syntax seems like a distant third- or fourth-most important aspect to me.
- Joel Webber
@Nick: That kind of struck me as well when they first started talking about it. But when you consider that your main alternative is C++, and that compile times can get absolutely brutal (try compileing WebKit sometime -- it takes hours), it makes a bit more sense.
- Joel Webber
@Joel. yea, I can't say you're wrong and I am right.. these are all preferences.. for me, syntax is an important aspect in terms of code readability that's why I care since it becomes a real pain in the ass on a midsize or bigger project.
- Ozgur Demir
This thread is degenerating into rubbish. You know who you are - please stop.
- Christopher Galtenberg
from iPhone
@Joel yeah, I guess. But compiling something like that should take hours! Back when men were men and compiling a kernel on my 386 was a major undertaking success was so much more satisfying! Who are these young'uns Thompson & Pike and what do they know anyway!
- Nick Lothian
Yeah, really! Real programmers had to swap disks multiple times to run a Pascal compiler on Hello World for the C64 :)
- Joel Webber
Yeah, compilation speed doesn't mean too much. Would be nicer if they focused on the *thinking* part with regards to concurrency.
- Rudolf Olah
Compilation speeds mean a lot when you're dealing with the google programming model. This is a company that invented code search for internal use. (See as an example: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7613693...)

"Women with curvy figures are likely to be brighter than waif-like counterparts and may well produce more intelligent offspring, a US study suggests. Researchers studied 16,000 women and girls and found the more voluptuous performed better on cognitive tests - as did their children. The bigger the difference between a woman's waist and hips the better. Researchers writing in Evolution and Human Behaviour speculated this was to do with fatty acids found on the hips."
- RAPatton
from Bookmarklet
"In this area, the fat is likely to be the much touted Omega-3, which could improve the woman's own mental abilities as well as those of her child during pregnancy. Men respond to the double enticement of both an intelligent partner and an intelligent child, the researchers at the Universities of Pittsburgh and California said. The findings appear to be borne out in the educational attainments of at least one of the UK's most famous curvaceous women, Nigella Lawson, who graduated from Oxford."

Barry, I know. I'm not really fretting. I know my intellectual strengths and weaknesses despite my sad lack of hips. It's just sad that every time a story about women's bodies comes out, someone has to be the 'loser.' There is another story going around about how men don't actually like size 0-2 women and I'm just thinking (flippantly) well good thing I was lucky enough to land myself...

The studies always say "this is better" instead of "it doesn't matter". To me, it's a sad statement about humanity that things like this are studied and that we can't get along being different. Yeah I'm thin, but no I'm not a bitch. Yeah I wear a small but no I don't find perfect fitting clothes everywhere I go. Yeah I'm skinny, but no I'm not healthier/more desirable/more whorish/richer/shallower/dumber then you. Whatever are differences are, the least of them is weight. SO fricken divisive.
- Heather
Joey - In my younger days... when I was single and *cough*, young, I used to remark that I liked 'em with a pulse. I like my women, well... female? I dunno. There have been large women that I've been very attracted to and "curvy" women that didn't do it for me at all. There have been women that I've liked on sight that I couldn't get away from fast enough once they opened their mouths....

funny bulls hit 'science' .. probably funded by US government money, or cosmetics industry ..--- it'l be that "attractive women", unfortunately, in capitalism, will get 'better' paying jobs, attract more wealthy partners, and so will get better education, better educated partner genes - because education and healthcare is not for poor - and so will end up having also more intelligent and better educated children ... this changes nothing on a thesis that being republican /robber baron/ is a genetic disorder

Yes, Sparky, they do not know how good they have it there frolicking on the beach while we freeze up here.. Hard to believe it is only 49 degrees, feels like 29.. I bet it's at least 85 degrees on that beach.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate this thread is clearly not developing a FriendFeed iPhone client because this is a great stress test case. (It crashes BuddyFeed, by the way.)

Also it exercises the crap out of your thumb trying to scroll down to the bottom of it.

- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, you may have given some people more reason to keep bumping this thread.
- Victor Ganata
How does it give you thumb exercise? Whatever you're doing, why don't you either use the keyboard or switch to Linux so you can middle-click the scrollbar to jump to where you want? :P
- Tanath
actually this thread does not bother me because I get it in email and gmail groups them and starts new thread after every 100 comments. I have it autoarchived so I do not have to see on phone lol and just see when I look at my ffeed label in gmail.

Bren - I got Plum at the animal shelter. I'm sure she's mixed breed, but she does have a lot of Russian Blue characteristics. Her eyes are more yellow-green, though, and she has some ghost striping here and there - mostly on her tail.

I've never even seen Mario Paint IRL, nor do I have any sort of console. You'd know such things *far* better than me :P

"Relaxing on an idyllic beach on Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean, Anthony Aguirre vividly describes the worst natural disaster he can imagine. It is, in fact, probably the worst natural disaster that anyone could imagine. An asteroid impact would be small potatoes compared with this kind of event: a catastrophic encounter with an entire other universe. As an alien cosmos came crashing into ours, its outer boundary would look like a wall racing forward at nearly the speed of light; behind that wall would lie a set of physical laws totally different from ours that would wreck everything they touched in our universe. “If we could see things in ultraslow motion, we’d see a big mirror in the sky rushing toward us because light would be reflected by the wall,” says Aguirre, a youthful physicist at the University of California at Santa Cruz. “After that we wouldn’t see anything—because we’d all be dead.”"

There seem to be a number of unfounded assumptions in this article. Interesting speculation though.
- Tanath
I was mostly intrigued by the idea of heading to the Grand Cayman to talk about this stuff. ;-)

$4. 15 minutes. To buy a *single* very short article, and just for vanity-sake, too. (it was a review of a theatre production I had been an orchestra conductor for many moons ago). This is ridiculous. I can buy an entire song on Amazon in seconds with 1 click for 99 cents. Why should this smidgen of text be so much more of a pain and expense?! Why can't the LA Times use Google Checkout? Or, heck, even PayPal. Why should I have to supply the LA Times with a mailing address, phone number, blah blah blah? And, perhaps more importantly, how much MORE MONEY would newspapers get if they joined the 21st century and made buying articles less like pulling teeth?

"During a radio address in which President Obama spoke about the recent murders at Fort Hood, he made a point to acknowledge the existence of atheists in the military. This marks the second time Obama has mentioned nonbelievers. This certainly is a pleasant change from most previous occupants of the White House. Referring to the diversity of U.S. military personnel, President Obama said something we all know but are still not used to hearing a president acknowledge. That's right, he mentioned nonbelievers again, saying, They are Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and nonbelievers. So our President recognizes that atheists serve in the military. I feel sort of silly for thinking that this is a big deal, but dammit, it is a big deal!"

Yep, I was a nonbeliever and in the Air Force.
- Alex Scoble
Very big deal. Actually the percentage of nonbelievers (or at least those claiming no religious affiliation, which is of course a different animal, albeit related) showed up on a slide deck I edited just this week. It's the third largest group, behind Protestant Christians and Roman Catholics. Over 20%.

"I fell head over heals for a girl. I thought about her way too often, missed her way more than a normal person ought to, and was pretty much in a constant state of love-induced sugar shock. I didn't want to seem overzealous or desperate, so I tried to play it cool -- and yet, the impulse to post embarrassing, saccharine love quotes to Facebook was overwhelming (I am but only a dork, after all)."

"So I did what any self-respecting geek would do in my position: I computed a SHA-2 hash of her name and put it in that weird little box thingy on the left hand side of my Facebook profile. It provided just the right balance of self expression and social tact. I was happy."
- Maxamad (Amazigh)
"I liked the idea so much that I decided I would wrap it in a small application and dedicate it to the object of my dorkitude. As I knew it would take a few weeks to flesh out and things were (shockingly) starting to work out between this lovely individual and myself, I thought that the final product might make for a cute little way of sharing my feelings. The idea of tiny "cupidcode"...

"Fast forward a few weeks, and cupidco.de is done. It's probably not well suited for the sorts of folks that read YC so I hope you don't mind me sharing my link with you. My hope is that this post will kick-start the spread of a few cupidcodes 'cross the nets so that my crush (who I've been seeing now for about two weeks!) may casually stumble upon one while checking her facebook or reading a blog and discover just how special she is to me."
- Maxamad (Amazigh)
....tl;dr -- fell in love with a chick, wanted to do something special for her, suck at everything else, so I built her a webapp.

"officially turning off the FriendFeed notifier once and for all. what's the point when most content (tweets) come in at least 30 mins late?" - http://twitter.com/parisle...
Hm. I'd go "Like" this in MG's feed... but it isn't here yet. Sigh.

Ken, I know. I had to bookmarklet it o_o

You rang? Of note, I always use the Web site, not the notifier, FriendFeed is much more than Twitter, and feedback I provide will be less visible, as one of the FriendFeed employees who most monitored this room has blocked me for reasons known only to them. (not Ben) :)

Now, I'm going to have to clear some room on the Xbox. I think I saw a TMNT demo for the old game a couple of weeks ago.
- Anika
You can get the full game on XBox live, it is still teh awesome! ...Now if only they would get the X-men and Simpsons 4-player arcade games on there.
- Joe Pierce
Is it free? I only have like 160 credits. :( I want to see N.A.R.C. and 1942. I loved playing those games too.
- Anika
I can't remember how much it was, I made my friend buy it so I could save my precious, precious, credits for something else. 1942 and N.A.R.C. would rock too. Contra is still pretty sweet too.
- Joe Pierce
I think can play this on my dreamcast - I've got an NES emulator for it and have all the games.
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
This is the arcade one, I hated the original NES game, that swimming level was poo.
- Joe Pierce
I think I found it in my MAME collection from way back - just have to see if the ROM is still good with the latest MAME. Amazing that a game like that could fit under 2MB.
- Matt Mastracci
TMNT 4 for SNES is a good emulator ROM target if you want the TMNT arcade experience right away on the computer.
- Daniel J. Pritchett

+1 Nathalie. Not only is there an NES emulator for the Dreamcast (a few, actually), there are emulators for the TMNT arcade ROM, the Simpsons arcade, Xmen and a few others. Dreamcast is better than teh Xbox. :)

"Acquiring, using and defending software patents has become big business — sometimes playing a vital role in a company’s success — but that could all change if the Supreme Court decides software can no longer be patented. If the justices make that decision, following oral arguments that begin Nov. 9, the ruling could drastically alter the competitive landscape of the Washington area’s software industry and other sectors of the local economy as well. The case, Bilski v. Kappos, marks the first time in more than 25 years that the Supreme Court will look at the criteria used to determine whether a business method or process — such as the series of actions that software performs — can be patented. Lawyers say the court case means change is inevitable and probably won’t favor software developers seeking the security of patents."
