If I waited for someone like JC to like things before jumping on, or followed their every whim, I'd have dropped nearly all my twitter followers and wouldn't even be posting on FriendFeed by now. Meh.

This is why I stopped reading "tech" sites and listening to "tech" podcasts. It's all navel gazing and caring about a small group of peoples' opinions that don't matter at all in the larger community.
- Rob Haas
Sigh. It's not a question of "for" or "against". Apple is just a company, it's not a religion, not a crusade, not some intellectual movement. I buy its products because I like them. Jason doesn't like them, because he doesn't like the lock in. That's cool, I'm fine with it. I'll carry on buying them till it becomes an issue for me.
- Ian Betteridge
I don't buy their products because I'm against them. So there.
- jcunwired
Ian, a couple of points. No one suggested it was religion, crusade, or intellectual movement. It's a debate with two opposing viewpoints. The Internet is a great venue for just that sort of communication. Jason DOES like Apple because, according to the article, he dropped about 20K on Apple-related stuff. Jason obviously feels passionate enough about their devices to WANT to spend the time to craft a rant. Hopefully, all parties (including Apple) walk away a little wiser as a result. We can hope, anyway.
- Craig Michael Patrick
Craig, the headline is "If Jason Calacanis is against Apple...". That makes it sound like "you're either for them or against them". As you rightly point out, Jason likes Apple. The idea that simply because you are critical of someone's business practices you're somehow "against" them is too common when talking about Apple, and it's not productive or helpful. Using words like "against" virtually guarantees that people won't walk away from it wiser - just more entrenched in their positions.
- Ian Betteridge
I agree that retweeting and "favoriting" per se are redundant, and think your workaround is kinda cool, but I think a lot of people (like me) use the favorite function more as a flag for later kind of thing. Maybe favoriting should just be repurposed? Twitter could finally embrace the retweet on their web site and rename "Favorite" to a simple "Starred" (whatever one then wants that to mean).
- Grey Drane
I use the twitter "Favorites" function as a quasi bookmarking tool (very handy). I see re-tweeting more as a "re-publishing" function. Maybe it's just a naming issue?
- Martin
I use favouriting when I'm on my iPod touch or school computer and I want to save a link to visit later. Retweeting is for sharing a tweet with others
- Bryce Roney
from iPod
I guess for me, I can't see why you would want to save a link but not retweet it...but hey, each to their own
- Zee.
I used to do it for sites that were hard to read on the iPhone, but now SimplyTweet and its landscape-aware browser (and Instapaper support) eliminate that need. Now I just do it for multimedia content that doesn't work on the iPhone (like Flash content) or for the odd really interesting tweet that I'll need time to ponder.
- Grey Drane
from IM
U can always retweet 2 different sets of audiences on Twitter or favorite 4 your own use 4 future reference.
- polou/indigo_bow
Nah, favorites are for me, I can retweet them later or share them using Google Reader. Retweet is more immediate, especially when you are retweeting emergencies or time sensitive information.
- Gabriel
The only time I *ever* favorite anything on Twitter is when I see a link to something interesting, while accessing Twitter on my iPhone, that I want to read later when I'm on my netbook/laptop/desktop. I don't use it to indicate a feeling about the tweet one way or another.
- Joey Gibson
I also use Retweets and Favorites as completely different tools. RTs are for tweets I find worthy of reposting to my followers, while I use Favorites as a poor man's bookmark-for-later system, specially while using Twitter on my iPhone. When I have time, and am back on my desktop, I go through my Favorites -deselecting them after I check them out. If I find one of them is worth retweeting, I'll do so too.
- Carlos Granier-Phelps
I with the favorite mark as a save for later crowd, like when there is a link that looks interesting but I don't have the time to look at it now. I use retweet to send out a message I see to everyone
- Kim Landwehr
I use "Favorites" as a way to bookmark items I want to come back to later.
- Steve Sill
I'm with Steve, Favorites are my way of bookmarking and just keeping track of tweets that I never want to forget or see gone from Twitter search at some point in the near future.
- Corvida
I agree with commenters that say RTs are for everyone but favorites are just for me. I don't use it just for URL bookmarking, though. I use the Save to Instapaper feature of my mobile twitter client (Gravity) to read URLs later.
- dthree
some reasons might include consideration for others, noise pollution or the simple fact that it merely amuses you or likely applies to only your own interests. They're completely different animals. "OBAMA is such a class act. Love that he invites Professor Gates & Police Officer to White House. Use it to show that both over-reacted." ~ meryl steinberg [I think he's modeling virtue and compassion to the nation and world.]
Hm, I am sorry Myrna but I am not an expert (I did not observe him carefully enough - just few speeches and shows...) But from what I could observe he has a great talent. Perhaps he's slightly too perfect and slightly too cold - on the other side though it is good to be sober in the crisis situations, don't you think so...?
- Hanna Wiszniewska
Yes, I think what you call 'sober' I call boundaries, knowing when to speak, how to speak and to whom as well. He is not perfect as a human but he's perfect now in his role of president. He knows how to gather the best minds to work together for the common good. He knows how to reach out and build bridges. Isn't that what we're all wanting to do in our lives?
- Myrna
Frankly after the swagger of Bush anyone in the shoes of a president would seem restrained;)

Deepti, Obama is much more than 'anyone after Bush'

Deepti, when you mention swagger, last night an English director/humorist was asked if its more difficult to poke fun at Obama and he said he has a cute walk getting off air force one, sauntering from side to side down the steps.

You're just taking other people's posts from across the Internet and reposting the content here. That's plagiarism and it's also pointless. Who would come to your site to read these articles when they can just go to the original site?
- Eric Geller
It doesn't look to bad, but a different theme would do. And Eric, what do you think the point of TechCrunch is? Or Google, or any search engine? Or Yahoo news, or a local news cast that replays CBC? How about a news feed such as an RSS imported to a website. Or Twitter? RT's? That would be called plagiarism apparently, to you that is. Try a little harder when thinking of a comment, or make your own website full of useless information and comments, ok?
- Zachary TG
Zachary: TechCrunch adds content to the excerpts it provides. And this guy isn't TRYING to be Google or "any search engine," he's trying to be a blog. News organizations that replay footage do so because they can't provide their own content. Twitter and RTs are not plagiarism because there's fair use involved in that. But the stuff he's copying and pasting is copyrighted work. I tried very hard when thinking of a comment, and judging by your use of self-defeating points, I'd say you didn't.
- Eric Geller
Richard: You do not understand the point of blogging. If you can't produce your own content or add value to something pre-existing, then don't blog at all. You shouldn't start by stealing other people's stuff and saying, "Maybe I'll write something unique if others help me."

Eric, good job on pointing out the challenges with taking other people's ideas. You'll find, though, that this is common. The key to avoiding plagiarism charges would be to provide attributions and include personal opinions. Common blog entries link to several sources and combine them into a perspective for others to consider. Scrappers - on the other hand - deserve to be sued.

I've been wanting to ask this for a while, and considering Mike Arrington is a web celeb now - i'll just ask publicly. Why do SOME of you dislike/hate Michael Arrington? It's not a rhetorical question btw - i'm genuinely asking because i've thought hard...and can't think of anything that that he's specifically done.
have some of you had personal bad experiences with him? Is it just that you think he's arrogant. I've personally got no issue with the guy aside from the fact that he's technically competition for TheNextWeb and I think he & his site make techmeme way too often! :)
- Zee.
My personal interactions with Mike have all been good. (E-mail, phone, F2F) His positions no doubt occasionally disagree with mine.
- Louis Gray
Well, I for one do not hate or dislike him. In fact, I think he's brilliant, but he also tends to think out loud (or think while posting, I guess) and therefore comes across as abrasive. He is frequently wrong too, but has real trouble thinking that there may exist other viewpoints besides his own, especially in the midst of a discussion. At times like that he just goes on and on, and eventually just makes a bore of himself.
- Jim Is Not Smart
@Louis and that's what i seem to hear from most industry professionals who have encountered him...So i'm stil left confused. Is it mainly because at times Techcrunch has broken embargoes and so the majority of haters are PR folk and entrepreneurs? Or is it mainly other competing bloggers? I mean where the heck does some of the hatred come from...

He didn't really pop up on my radar till that thing with Leo Laporte (which apparently was the result of a big misunderstanding?) I was subbed to the TechCrunch account here on ff and thought that a lot of the stuff that popped up was pretty interesting. If anything I "hate" that he's gone...

@Paul - yeah i thought the same..but its one person losing it. What i mean is, as much as i like/resppect him, Laporte isn't God - disagreements happen all the time at work and that doesn't make one person bad and the other good. Look, i'm not necessarily standing up for Mike here but I just want to try & put things in perspective. That argument on air is no where near enough for the targeted attacks I've personally seen online directed at him.

Mathew: Arrington has helped MANY people and startups. You are wrong when you say he only hurts people. Absolutely wrong.
- Robert Scoble
@Zee Laporte is by no means god.. LOL He's made his share of cock ups too in the past, but for all that Arrington has done good, he has a habit of rubbing people the wrong way if you know what I mean. He is deliberately abrasive because it brings him attention. When you're that abrasive you become someone that people love to hate.
- Paul OFlaherty
I like Mike. I like Pete at Mashable. I have huge disagreements with how both of them report the news, but that's just my perspective on process journalism. That said, I think it's unfair to judge the guy (Mike) based on what we read online from his media outlet as many of us seem to. Unless you've met the guy in person, it's no use in making an assertion one way or another I feel.
- Brandon Mendelson
Why do I get the feeling that the original question will not get answered in this thread? :) Based on a brief Google search, you can write a whole thesis on why people love/hate Arrington, and how justified it all is.
- Vincent van Wylick
@Brandon - exactly. Deliberately controversial posts are part of what makes Techcrunch a success. It's entertainment, pure and simple. People take it far too seriously.
- Martin Bryant
The problem is that it's not just entertainment. Techcrunch has a lot of voice and what it publishes can make huge waves on and off the internet. Whether such power should be wielded by a single person/editor, I don't know.
- Vincent van Wylick
TechCrunch has more than a dozen employees at this point.
- Robert Scoble
That's true, it's an organisation, which is great. But take today, he compared Friendfeed to a virus like Syphilis. I personally don't mind the comparison, but I'm sure other people will. It's provocative blogging and he's using a powerful platform, Techcrunch, to state a personal opinion. It's the nature of the internet that this is happening and I don't know where it's all going, but many little (potential) needles can make for a sharp object.
- Vincent van Wylick
@Paul - guess what, the Leo thing was a mistake, a misunderstanding. It was cleared up inside an hour by the two people involved on the dispute and it was over. @Robin, I don't believe it does. It was certainly out of character for Leo to explode like that. Again, it was an example of how Arrington rubs people up the wrong way. How being deliberately abrasive make you the person people love to hate, which I believe I said earlier in this thread.
- Paul OFlaherty
i'm not a fan of Arrington. mostly because i find his mean-spirited behavior little more than link-baiting to promote his own self interest. i've watched from a distance (not a subsriber, etc.) and over the years i've seen him grow more and more strident in his posts - a typical pattern for someone on a personal downward spiral. in the last year this mean attitude has folded back on him...

No you didn't Zee, there were never any posts there. They were annulled from the proceedings and thus never happened. And now Paul and I will make up and no one gets to take either side, cause we're both hunky and dorry

I started poking around the internet 12 years ago, and I spent a lot of time in political blogs, where feelings can run quite raw and grudges can be held forever. I've seen all manner of people and places, and I think I dislike Arrington for two reasons: (a) he runs his mouth without thinking far too frequently for someone who purportedly runs a "news" website and (b) I truly believe...

ding ding ding. We have a winner here folks. Thanks Steven. People can hope all they want about a person's "good intentions" but ignoring your own powers of discernment and judgment in subservience to that hope is actually hopeless. For me, he falls into the same category as a lot of pundits: he has some very good, specific knowledge that he conflates into declarative statements of dubious provenance. While I can appreciate some of what he says, his often confrontational stance (before being questioned) is a turn off.

Luckily, I will only be 4 stores away (about 8 miles). But it is still hard as most of my customers, live within 1 mile of my store. Very tough.

nope @perezhilton is never entertaining and a big IF on "when you're not being mean" I don't mind saying in limitation, the world would be better without him or others like him. He feeds the surface nasty garbage need of people who could spend more energy actually benefiting someone and something - you know the energy you're trying to foster with so many other great causes. After getting into some good literary criticism courses in college, even as an undergrad, I noticed that my jr. high and high school English teachers were just not as strong as my profs were. I had a good grounding in writing, but not so much in reading and criticism.
- Ladybug Heather
...amen to that, from someone who has an bachelor in English Literature.
- .LAG liked that
Probably because they were? English teachers in high school in particular tend to be not very forward thinking, and just try to get their lessons out there and go. Obviously all of them aren't like that. College was better, and grad school was way better (M.A. in English Lit over here).
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Don't got down that road, Dan. English is used for a lot of reasons, from creativity to technical to the free flow of information. English teachers set a solid framework so you know what you're doing when you "break the rules.' As to your other message, people don't "regularly" use but to begin sentences. People should use it sparingly because it still acts, often, as a conjunction,...

I see where you're coming from, Temple. But more than anything, I'd say at least a third of what I was taught back in school is quite literally wrong now or it's changed so much that it may as well be wrong. Take a proper possessive noun. I was taught that if the noun ended in S but was becoming possessive, you added the apostrophe at the end like "Bess' coat." See that? I also did...

Dan, I don't think we were taught things that were "wrong," but I do think writing styles have changed. Journalistic styles vary from 8th grade English styles, too. I've noticed the change in how apostrophes are used, but I still do it the way I was taught. (And I was blessed with a terrific English teacher from 10th-12th grade who taught us on a college level.)
- Laura Lou Who
Heather - I'm the opposite. I'm not confident in my writing but I can critique the hell out of a book (at least orally). Also, I think the books we're required to read in high school build a good foundation. I would've never read some of them on my own and they introduced me to authors I love. My college literature classes were amazing and some of my favorite books were read there: i.e. Marriete in Ecsatsy and The Book of Daniel.
- Lis Miller
It's less that high school English teachers teach is wrong than that they teach it as the only right way. They don't tell you that the Oxford comma is standard in academic English, but completely eschewed in journalism. They don't tell you that the five-paragraph essay is a useful place to start, but that your college professors are going to show you many more, and more interesting,...

The more I live and learn, the more I realize that most of my teachers (in every topic) were full of it.

What do you mean. You mean "making the news" or posing people to catch a moment. And i'm assuming paper = newspaper but it might not ???

RT @lakersnation: Birdman is re-enacting the scene from Angels in the Outfield with his flying motions . . . looked stupid in the movie, looks stupid on tv!
- David
I would take him on any team, unless it was for a slam dunk competition.
- Jed
Michael Jordan's Chicago Bull's would have beat their asses so hard, they would have been swept with their tails between their legs. Kobe can't defend.
- Cristo
It's sad that a team as flawed as the Lakers are still the NBA's best
- JKidd5
Dunno why people compare Kobe to MJ. There is no comparison. Kobe can't hold MJ's jock
- JKidd5
David, only endless because Laker fans are not living in reality. And I say that as a Laker fan. MJ and the Bulls were the best of all time, and you can suck the Bulls nuts if you don't agree.
- Cristo
Check out all those Laker teams that beat the Bulls in the 90s. Remember, they ended both Magic and Karreem careers. I bet all the Laker fans thought the Lakers would roll over the Bulls.
- Cristo
On paper, Lakers should be blowing out games. They are so deep.
- Rodfather
This is how the Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain fans felt when we called Jordan the best
- Bwana ☠
I think Jordan's legacy is timeless. The fact that the Jordan brand exists is proof of that. It's like Gretzky with hockey.
- Jed
David, I disagree with you on the Lakers. They couldn't even always beat the Celtics. The Bulls played defense, and Jordan was one of the best defensive players ever. The best Bulls team would have beat the best Lakers team. No defense equals no win.
- Cristo
The Celtics of the 80's could beat any team today also. it's a lame argument
- David
Comparing current players is hard enough, there's no point in comparing eras/generations.
- Jed
You can't compare different era's. The Dream Team was the best team ever though
- Rodfather
The Bulls were the best team of all time. They could have beat any team. Michael Jordan was the best player of all time. There as been no better.
- Cristo
Yup, in my opinion. Nobody won like the Bulls. Last minute shots. They defeated everyone. I would love to see them play the best teams, like your Lakers and your Celtics.
- Cristo
It was ugly...uglier than last night's game
- Bwana ☠
it was like a boxing match (is like one) ... team feeling each other out ... a few uppercuts and haymakers but they are both still standing.

I just dont get how Kobe who was building houses, has thrown up 26 shots while Gasol and Bynum are shooting a combined 77% throw up 18 combined. It's really baffling
- JKidd5
I think this isn't good for the Lakers. They won 2 games by the skin of their teeth over two dumb inbound Denver plays & they got dominated here despite the ticky tack fouls from the refs
- Cee Bee
Playoff teams that went home are like - Why you didn't play like that against us?!?!
